About two months ago, this bright, inviting and clean shop made my whole day and I cannot stop returning for the food! Who knew there was homemade, wholesome and nutrient dense lunch optipn right across from the BMFI and next to Sophia nails?! While it appears mostly as a retailer that specializes in high quality supplements, Arrowroot Farmacy has a fantastic cafe! FANTASTIC! For those with dietary restrictions, this is the place. Everything is sourced responsibly, is vegan, gluten free and organic. The remedy teas, smoothies, granola, pastries, soup, sandwiches and salads are designed by Debbi and Rabia, the providers who offer clinical and integrative nutrition and herbalist consultations (wow). Staff is extremely helpful with both supplements and the cafe menu. Arrowroot is my go to for a meet up with a friend, a quick and filling/healthy/delicious meal, or a caffeinated pick me up. Strongly recommend the daily soup (they're ALL good but I love astragalus vegetable), the Lion's Mane Lentil Loaf, and hot Matcha Blend. You can't go wrong. Dale always gives great recommendations. The menu changes weekly and the grab and go muffins and cookies pair well with the beverages. You can also order food to go. It's a rarity to find a store that sells supplements with a staff that is so informed to keep you safe. Add this to your rotation. Your body will thank you. read more

My family and I were looking for a place to sit down and have a nice drink and we were coming up at a loss in this area until we stumbled upon this place. It is such an adorable little boutique/pharmacy/Café. Think of David's general store on Schitt's Creek and that's what you're getting here. The drinks are boutique herbal drinks but they're delicious, and the staff are all incredibly kind. Everything is also vegan. I can't recommend this place enough. read more

Arrowroot Farmacy is a locally owned apothecary and cafe in the heart of the Main Line. Their food was some of the best food I have ever tasted. Everything was so fresh, and you could taste the high quality ingredients in each bite. The store not only makes delicious foods (vegan and gluten free) but also sells homeopathic vitamins, supplements, skin care and so much more. I had a chance to speak with the owner Debbie who is so kind and lovely. You can tell she really puts so much love, care, and hard work into her store for her customers to have an amazing experience. Love this place! Customer service is amazing, and always so personal. Debbie (the owner who's very knowledgeable about alternative medicine) is always willing to help out anyone with any kind of ailment even if she's not in the store that day they will offer to call her for you! The food is always made fresh and comes from local ingredients. The prices are definitely a little expensive but its totally understandable for a family owned shop that's smack on Lancaster ave! Another phenom surprise for this area imho. When I saw top shelf Living Libations products, it was jaw dropping. You can barely find this in LA! They have a full complement of Sun Potion, Pure Encapsulations, Kombucha (home made!), clean baked goods and even knitted wool sweaters. It's a small shop on the Main Line where life is beautiful, well at least the storefronts, with an intimate cozy feel. The owners were extremely helpful, knowledgeable and attuned to price point. I try to support local businesses in Bryn Mawr whenever possible. However, when I went into Arrowroot yesterday I was perplexed. The prices were at least 50% more than the already expensive Main Line grocery stores (i.e. $6.99 for a box of Kashi Go-Lean). I bought a loaf of Le Bus bread with a gift certificate. It cost over $6.00 and when I got home, realized it was stale. With that kind of price, I would have been livid had I actually had to shell out cash for it. The prices here are absolutely unreal and the quality is questionable. Many of the cans/bottles looked like they had been there for a long time. I would recommend going directly to the Bryn Mawr farmers' market for produce, breads, meats, milk, eggs, cheese, etc. Better prices, better quality, dealing with the farmers directly. This store suffers from the problem that most natural food stores in the U.S. suffer from: it's too expensive. The prices on the produce aren't as bad as some places, but I thought that the prices here were across-the-board too high. I shop at a wide variety of stores, including both small and large, and I know that it's possible to run a small business and have lower prices, because there are numerous small ethnic groceries throughout the region, which have much lower prices, and there are farm stands and farmer's markets with cheaper local produce, so I know that's possible too. Even some of the packaged products here I've seen elsewhere for cheaper. The one thing here that I think is a great deal, and in my opinion makes the whole store worth visiting, is the bulk herb and tea section. The bulk herbs and tea are from Frontier Coop. I've reviewed a number of them on RateTea: http://ratetea.com/brand/frontier/214/ and I think they tend to be pretty high in quality. The prices are very reasonable, and what I like most of all is that there is no surcharge for small quantities, making it easy to buy a bunch of small samples before committing to a bigger quantity. I really wish this store, like most other similar stores, would set lower prices as a higher priority. I think there's a certain disconnection from reality associated with high prices in natural food stores. I really don't buy into the idea that you need to spend more money to buy products that are good for your health and for the environment and society. I shop around and I regularly buy very cheap products that are both healthy and environmentally sound. I think that high prices are often a sign of inefficiency--which in our society is associated with wasted resources, and often, indirectly, increased fossil fuel consumption and other things. In order for a store's prices are lower, they HAVE to be efficient. And efficiency doesn't always come at the cost of cutting corners of environmental or human rights issues. Efficiency can also take the form of reducing waste (i.e. making sure that the turnover of products is high enough that products are never thrown out, buying products on the market when they are over-abundant so that you prevent them being thrown out on a larger scale, etc.) and it can also take the form of locating products that have been produced in a more efficient manner. Disappointing, overpriced and the customer service is lacking. I have shopped at Arrowroot probably 5 or 6 times over the last month and a half. Over the course of those visits, the following things seem to be consistent: 1) The produce is often in poor condition. Today I saw zucchini that was soft and had small nicks in it (all of them looked the same). It's not zucchini I would ever pay money for and I honestly wonder how the quality of the produce is overlooked. In the past I have also seen bruised apples and tomatoes, and over ripe bananas. I only buy my produce here if i am in a serious bind. 2) The prices are outrageous. I would never buy supplements here as they can be found at a better price at Wholefoods. The prepared foods are also way overpriced ($7.99 for sandwiches) as are a lot of the frozen foods, like gluten free bread. 3) The employees seem disorganized. The last 2 times I have shopped, the person ringing me up has had to make a phone call to" the back" to clear up a question. The first time, it was to find out if the banana bread was vegan. I feel they could save a lot of time (for both employees and customers) if they simply list the ingredients for all of their foods. Some of the bakery items are missing an ingredient list as are their prepared sandwiches. Today, the cashier made a call to the person who made the sandwiches in the back to see if the date written on the sandwich was an expiration date or the date when the sandwich was prepared. Which leads me to problem #4: 4) Expired products. The sandwich I picked today had expired 3 days ago. I can understand missing it by one day, but not 3. That means that 3 days have gone by since anyone has gone through the cooler to check for dates. After the cashier told me she didn't want to sell me the expired sandwich, we went back to the cooler so I could pick something else.This was my idea, not hers and I wonder why she didn't think to ask me if I'd like to find a different sandwich. She pulled out a bunch of other expired one and I ended up going with the "Organic Veggie Sandwich" which brings me to problem #5: 5) The sandwich was awful. I asked her what was in it and she told me it was full of veggies, which sounded good. Upon taking a bite I realized that it was made of the following: Cabbage, shredded carrots, avocado, tomatoes, red onion and.....JAM. Yes, both pieces of bread had some type of fruit spread on them. I have been eating vegan sandwiches for years and have never come across this combination, nor do I want to ever again, In essence, I am happy that there is a health food store in the area but I feel that Arrowroot has immense room for improvement, in many areas. I will probably return for that last minute item that I tend to forget from the big chain health food stores but I certainly won't be buying a sandwich from them again. read more

They have a very wide selection of supplements and natural foods, along with homeopathic oils, but the prices are very high ($29 for a tiny bag of freeze-dried Wheatgrass powder). They do carry a small selection of organic produce, but I would rather head to Trader Joe's or Ardmore's Farmer's Market down the street. The baked goods here are not very good at all; my muffin tasted stale and incredibly dry (I couldn't even finish it). I did manage to get a bottle of mangosteen juice with no additives for about $29, which is on par with prices elsewhere. The girls here are very helpful and friendly, so that kinda makes up for the astronomically high prices and inedible baked goods. I am heading to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's next time for my organic fare, and will only come here for my juice extracts if I can't find them elsewhere. read more

I am honestly very surprised by the low reviews for this place. I came here looking for vitamin supplements (such as 5-HTP) that are difficult to find in traditional grocery stores or pharmacies. The girl that greeted me was very friendly. She was able to locate everything I was looking for. It's true that the prices are a bit steep but, unlike other places, this store actually carries my items. As a first-time customer, you get 10% off of your purchase. That was great news! Then, because of an electronic system error that forced me to wait, the girl gave me an additional 50% off to make up for it. I walked out with everything I came in looking for, with a feeling that I had practically robbed the place. Great service. read more

The prices at Arrowroot are outrageous! For example, the kind bars were $2.49. At Whole Foods, TJ's, and all other stores, they are $1.49. The price of the coconut water was also much higher than Whole Foods and Mom's Organic. The customer service is also lacking. The girl with the curly blonde hair is always nice to me, but the other two women are not friendly. They never say hello or ask you if you need any help. I asked one of the workers if they had organic, pasture raised meats. She told me that she had no idea about the meats because she doesn't eat meat. She had a very condescending tone because I was inquiring about meat, and she was clearly a vegetarian. Regardless of if you eat a certain product or not, you should still have knowledge of the products! Between the high prices, poor customer service and lack of fresh produce, I will not be returning to this store. It's really not worth the frustration! read more

Arrowroot has been a community asset since I moved to the main line 30 years ago. But after Beth sold to a new owner, the quality of service has declined significantly. The staff doesn't seem to know what the store was and are hopelessly incapable of recreating the atmosphere and service that Arrowroot was known for. Their is an openly judgemental attitude, so I feel unwelcome. Sadly I cannot recommend Arrowroot to new customers. read more

If you are into alternative health and are up on all the cutting edge of things that are being found to assist us ( especially as we age) and most people haven't heard of it, and most stores aren't even close to carrying it, Arrowroot not only has it, but has several brands of it. They have food, they have items other than that as well. This isn't CVS, or Rite aid, or the Medicine Shoppe. I go to those for other things and for simple vitamins . I go to Arrowroot for things like CBD oil which is a lifesaver and hardly anyone carries . I know of one place that has one brand, and it is a low strength. I went to Arrowroot, and they have ten brands, many strengths, many sizes, different forms of it, and their prices are the same as the manufacturers. Arrowroot just carries things I have to order online for and buy from several different vendors. The prices are not that different at all. I think the days of Arrowroot being more expensive are just not accurate. read more

as far as price is concerned... whole foods organic avocados $2, at arrow root they run about $1-1.50. other produce prices i would say are probably comparable. i enjoy the wide varieties and varied selection of, what would in other stores be considered "specialty items". i often spend excessive time browsing; it somehow feels informative in a way. also as far as price is concerned, if you avoid a lot of the stupid stuff, and by that i mean big name brand processed foods, sweets, that sort of stuff, than you can avoid those products i'd say are generously marked up. another nice thing i find is the prepared foods they offer ready made in the back. they're usually pretty fresh and i find them a nice healthy meal on the go if i'm in the area. price is an issue here, but the taste is usually pretty good and health wise the ingredients are usually quite agreeable. also i'd like to add, another reviewer here mentioned the farmers market down the street. the farmers market does not have organic produce, and if they do it's not much. i often feel these places carry normal grocery store produce, unfortunately... and comparing the quality of food from arrowroot to trader joe's or the farmers market doesn't seem to make much sense to me. arrowroot is much more health conscious in the realm of ingredients and food processing, thus your more likely to find healthier food at arrowroot. read more

Not a bad place, just the prices are steep for the lack of quality, I'll explain. For starters when I got to the register the woman who rang me up gave me a different price than on the shelve weird right! Only after a few minutes of searching through the computer and then through a catalog did she realize it was not in their system very annoying, but she did give me the online price which was very nice. Anyway I had bought some baked goods for me and my hubby and they were just outright awful, honestly the place just seems much to disorganized for my needs. I won't be coming back. read more
