My first time at this nail place was last week, and my initial thoughts and interactions were good. Everyone was nice and the environment was welcoming. It wasn't until my nails were completed that i had an issue. I asked for a black french tip, and this was one of the worst ones i've ever gotten. I do not recommend this business because for the price that I paid for my service I received a below average service and the quality of the service was not up to par. The employees are very very kind, however for a $60 gel pedicure all you're getting is the gel color and your feet in the water. There is no lotion, no minimal massage, and no cutting of the cuticle whatsoever. All you will relieve is trimming of the nail which was a hassle trying to even get trimmed. I don't personally mind the look of the salon, because it's the service that matters. read more

Unfortunately not the best experience. Staff was talkative and casual. The location is less than clean. If cleanliness is a concern for you I would recommend elsewhere. One part that felt unprofessional was I have a lot of scaring from self harm on my left arm. My nail tech mentioned it very loudly and unkindly. I would have preferred no comments on something like that and especially not announcing it very loudly. My manicure was not really what I wanted, but each tech is better or worse at certain things and that is okay. I was settled to get not quite the shape I wanted, but the next day the gel just started peeling off. I was occupied with a conference so could not come in for a repair. I also would not want them to be repaired since the initial job was not the best. Called a week and a half after when I was back. They don't do refunds and said it was too far out for them to fix anything. I understand the policy. If it were closer to time I could have come in, however I was out of town and would not have returned for the above reasons. I really can't speak highly enough of my experience at Art of Nails! I loved getting acrylics done in the Pre-Pandemic Times, but since we've been at home for a year I've been abstaining. This week, I had made some (100% socially-distant!!) travel plans and wanted to look a little special. Being new to Des Moines, I didn't have any idea on where to go, and chose Art of Nails mostly on a whim. Last minute scheduling was a breeze, and I was able to get in right away. Alec gave me a perfect, crisp white pedicure, and his father/salon owner Billy gave me the most immaculate French tip manicure I've ever seen. It was a lengthy process, which I appreciated - to me, it showed how much he cared about the work (especially since it was around closing time and it would have been easy for him to simply rush me out.) I was nervous about the base color, as most of the images I had seen online seemed too pink to be a true nude on my brown skin, but Billy helped me find an almost exact nude color that I'll definitely be using again in the future. Together, we worked out the shape and style of manicure that would look best from the inspired pictures I had found on Pinterest and I couldn't be happier with the finished result. I went in, they were nice everything was great. When I got home I noticed 3 of my nails had cracks in them, several were very unevenly shaped and most her crooked. I always get tips with dip, stiletto shaped and ombre, I haven't found a place I'll be a regular with so it's somewhere new every set, I've never had issues like this. I did contact them about getting them fixed. I work mornings at one job and nights at another during the week so weekdays would never work for me and I requested a weekend day. I was told they couldn't, I get that, but then they told me there was nothing wrong with my nails really but in a photo they noticed that I cracked ONE and they could fix it on a weekday for me. I ended up just telling them I'd get them fixed somewhere else since they failed to see that they messed up my nails and they look bad. My hands are as flat as possible in these photos and my camera is right above them, not at an angle. 10/10 would NEVER recommend this salon. read more

It was a last minute decisIon to take my mom for a nail service and we found this lovely spot in East Village just up the way from where we stayed. The owner made me comfortable in a massage chair while I waited, and I decided just to go ahead with pedicure and foot massage. Not from the area and I wanted to support a different nail salon in the Des Moines area. The nail tech who put on my acrylic set was new from a beauty school, she was sweet and helpful. Then I got switched a to a different nail tech and he was very forceful and then came off irritable. Nail tech messed up twice on the flower then just finally gave up and finished. I kept smiling and said it was okay... I had a few nails off center and crooked but it was a easy fix when I got home. I'm not the type of person to complain or make anyone's job more difficult so I left it alone and paid 70.99 (included tip). I feel like I shouldn't have paid for the extra $5 for the flower design because it wasn't even completed or fixed. I will maybe try again in the future... but not anytime sooner. Easy to find but the entrance is around the corner on E 5th. They do have a sign. They have a decent number of polishes and seem to do a variety of services. This time I got a full set with polish. I hate to write a bad review because I'm normally not one to complain and I went here wanting to support a small business in my neighborhood, but I wasn't impressed with the service here and wanted to make others aware. Almost every single finger was bleeding and red by the end of them being filed, my middle nail is completely crooked and thumb is slightly chipped (which I would've asked him to fix if I had noticed before leaving) and my nails still hurt from being filed hours later. Also if you're worried about cleanliness I wouldn't go here, I'm worried about getting an infection from being cut so many times. It's on the second floor of the building, so you have to wind up a weird little staircase to get there, but once you're in the space it's very cute, colorful, and relaxing! It's cheaper than the high end salons in the area, but you still get some amazing quality nails! The manager is quick to welcome you, and the nail technicians are very kind. I recommend calling for an appointment, because they are sometimes busy. However, I've walked in without an appointment plenty of times and just had to wait 10-15 minutes for a nail tech to be free. My SIL and I had to travel to Des Moines for a social function and I called last minute , the night before, to see if we could schedule pedicures. The gal who answered my call was very nice and scheduled both of us for the afternoon. We were warmly greeted by Jennifer and we got seated right away. Prices for pedicures are more than reasonable, and there are a variety of options. Jennifer worked on my SIL, and Alec did my pedicure. Wish I could leave no stars. Husband of girl who does hair is the rudest most stuck of POS ever. I went in asking for a full set and he refused to give me one. Even tho I said I had already got a fill on the set I currently had and wanted a full set. HE decided I needed another fill. HE chose the color. Then HE complained the whole time about the set, I mentioned multiple times that I wanted a full set. Made racist comments towards me saying all latinas like bright colors even though I was saying how I like soft ones and wanted a soft baby pink. Said how I was a tough cookie to please and felt bad for my future husband all because I was asking him to not drill my damn fingers. Claims to have 12 years of experience but I've had better done from beginners learning. He burned me multiple times and kept drilling on to my cuticles. Then said it was all so my nails wouldn't lift. Been getting my nails done for ten years every two weeks and have never had a worst experience. Nails are all crooked and lifted and it's only been a couple of days. Worst experience and he charged me for a full set even though he refused to give me one. My friend also was with me and asked for matte black dip, her nails ended up shiny black and cut WAY too short. Nubs. When she asked for a small file. The man who did my nails noticed her bad job and claimed to redo her matte coat. Still shiny. TIP: don't waste your money here. read more

Three months ago, I sent some pics to art of nails on Facebook asking if they could do a design for my wedding. They said sure- and made an appt the wedding day at 10 am. They never once said they would not be able to do it- and I excitedly came in to get my nails done. They did my toenails, it looked really sloppy, so they redid it. The picture in comments was my "redo" pedicure after the first two hours for my wedding nails. The first time it looked just as bad, and they redid it promising it would look better the second time. (After the first time, that I do not have a picture of, I said I had to go somewhere else- but they assured me it would look better if I redid it.) After the second time- When I started crying and said it looked sloppy- I was told i had too high of expectations because I was nervous for the wedding. They had to call someone in on their day off to fix my nails. Although there were three people working, none of them were able to do a pedicure that did not look like what was pictures. The gentleman that cam in did an incredible job, and fixed my nails and toes. He had to buff off about an inch of thickness on the acrylic nails I asked for and made it very clear that the first two people working on my hands and feet really messed up. When doing what he could to fix my toenails- we were on a time crunch, he said "did you even get a pedicure", because my cuticles were cut up all weird. The person attempting to fix my toenails left a slightly less sloppy mess- but still not even close to a quality salon pedicure. On the way out, my mom was confused that they were charging for the pedicure since I didn't get what I wanted- and I said it was fine, and I would just talk to the manager on Monday. The man checking me out yelled and said he was the manager- and that I was not welcome back. I showed him the pics of my toenails, and he became irate and started screaming. A few minutes in, I pulled out my phone to start recording. I was yelled at and insulted on my wedding day- because I cried about these toenails below. The worst part is that after the three hours- I left happy with my fingernails- at least, thankful that people don't look too closely at feet- and was happy that at least one employee of that establishment knew how to make nails not look sloppy, but the man checking me out and yelling at me and my mom on my wedding day was absolutely uncalled for, and heartbreaking. Got off the plane from San Francisco and had a few hours to kill before my hotel (motel) check-in. I'm a spa manager in downtown SF so I figured I'd go relax like I know how to. Don't let the handwritten A-Frame fool you (or even the low prices as they do not reflect the awesome service) or the narrow stairway entry that could lead anywhere. This place was a gem. I was exhausted from my flight. It was cute and casual. They were rocking the 80's - did I mention I felt better as soon as I got inside? The walls are vibrant colors- an open inviting 2nd level spot with windows to people watch. Tons of colors to choose from. Daven did my nails. He was really cool - not your usual nail artist that sits in since and it was much appreciated. He filled me in on the city and suggested places to hang out. Ok- enough story. Daven gave me a nail job that now a week later sitting in my room in San Francisco is still almost perfect ...not sure what brand this polish is but I worked on my family farm on trackers for 3 days and it hardly chipped. The first thing I liked about this place is that I was able to get an appointment for 2 calling for same day on a Saturday. Once I got there, I was happily surprised by the space. It's on the second floor above the Locust Tap, so you've got to be looking to find it but the space is lovely; very bright both in color and from the windows looking out over the block. Upon entering, the owner was very friendly, greeted me at the door and offered me a glass of wine. I thought this was going to be an excellent experience! That's where it stopped. The woman who did my nails obviously did NOT like her job and was not at all friendly. She pretty much argued with me every step of the way from trying to file off my toe polish instead of using remover, (regular nail polish- NOT gel) not filing my nails down far enough, (or even straight) trying to fix a cracked (long natural) nail by cutting it off completely (I didn't let her) to failing to use a base or top coats on either my toes or finger nails. She was super sloppy and filed (with drill) the crap out of my nails. I don't know about the rest of the staff but she made my experience as unpleasant as it gets. I know I'm picky, but when I pay for a service I don't want to have to babysit my nail tech every step of the way. Also...even though the salon was clean, every towel they were using was completely ratty. Looked like they had never been washed. Guess the other clients are too drunk to notice. I just received wonderful service not 10 minutes ago. I've never had my nails done before and I thought it was time to treat myself for once. I was having one of my routine after work days and just thought I should pop in and see if they could get me in. I walked up the stairs and was greeted immediately. I told them I work in a restaurant and bartend so I wanted something that would hold up. What I believe may be the owner took me in to pick out a color. I chose a seaweed based color changing color with no formaldehyde or other harsh chemicals. I was also offered a glass of wine. I really appreciate that! I was kind of nervous because filing my nails makes me cringe. It made me more comfortable. All in all, I love the results and I will be back for a gel filling when my nails grow out as well as a pedicure in the future. I'm now a loyal customer. Thanks so much! read more
