We've passed by this shop over a few dozen times over the years & decided to give it a go. The items are handmade from the Koa tree that is found in Hawaii. There are pens, jewelry, bags/purses, wallets, key chains, cutlery, ornaments, vases, kitchen items & other curious artwork displayed for sale. Candace was manning the shop & she was so friendly & welcoming. She even suggested a lady who might be able to create what we're looking for. This lady works from home & has a website (Tropical Isle Music). I love to support local businesses & Candace was so charming, I bought a couple of Aloha Hula girl ornaments & a pineapple (see photo) ornament. There's a few spaces for parking that it shares with Mankoa & a granola shack. It was lovely speaking with Candace, who I learned is actually half Filipino & half Japanese, born & raised in Kaua'i. Her grandfather was one of the first Filipinos who arrived from the Philippines to work in the plantations in Hawaii. It's always interesting to learn about people & their heritage. On May 27, 2026, I purchased from the Seller, Hunter Gather, at its shop located at 4270 Kilauea…read moreRd, Ste I-1, Kauai, HI 96754, four items including small crystal sculpture of a turtle approximately 6" x 4" in size. The price of the crystal turtle sculpture was $218. I wasn't watching over the shoulder of the store clerk, a very young looking woman or late teenager, when she rang me up and put my items in a small brown paper bag with handles. I should have been watching. I assumed that she would wrap the turtle sculpture appropriately. When we left Kauai on May 30, 2026 to fly back home, my wife packed the bag containing the items I purchased in your store in my suitcase. When we got home and unpacked the suitcase, I took out the brown paper bag. I did not realize that somehow the brown paper bag had developed a tear in one of the side creases in the bag. I lifted up the bag from the suitcase laying open on the bed and moved it literally a foot away when the turtle sculpture slipped from the tear in the bag and landed on our tile floor. To our surprise and shock, we saw that the crystal sculpture had been wrapped only in a few sheets of extremely thin, colored wrapping paper and that, when I unwrapped the paper, the head and the rear flippers had broken off! Remembering the transaction, I recalled that the clerk had barely said anything. She did not ask if we wanted her to wrap the crystal turtle securely. Usually, when we have bought fragile items from an arts and crafts shop, the clerk either asks if we want the item packaged securely or voluntarily does it without us asking. As I said, the clerk looked young and acted as if she were new on the job. If not, she was not trained properly to either ask the customer if he or she wanted the fragile object packed securely or hadn't been trained well enough to know that it should be packed securely. Then she placed my items in a flimsy, defective paper bag that tore easlly at its seam, allowing the object to slip out. The principal causes of the breakage of the turtle were: 1) the negligence of the young, inexperienced or poorly trained clerk to package the object securely or to even ask me if wanted it packed securely, and 2) placing the object together with two heavier, bulkier items in the flimsy, defective, easily tearable paper bag that was provided I requested the owner of the shop to refund the purchase price of the turtle but he has refused, adopting a "Once it's out the door, it ain't my problem anymore" stand.

They have Hawaiian and Oceanic art that are both old and new. You can spend hours looking at each piece in detail. Many of the pieces have amazing stories behind them and the newer ones are from local Hawaiian artist and craftsman. The staff member I spoke to was kind and let me roam freely while explaining which items were made locally. Overall I think that if you want to take home a souvenir that's authentic, beautiful and with great meaning, this is a place to check out and buy from.

With that in mind, you gotta respect the artist that engages a neophyte like me. We were simply strolling around window shopping and saw the artist/gallery owner Max painting outside. He warmly greeted us and we soon engaged in some funny repartee. He did not hover over us as we walked through the gallery, which I really appreciated. We ended up buying two prints - one a landscape and one a more abstract painting. Max took the time to explain how he makes the art and also agreed to ship it to us for free. One week later, the prints arrived on our Virginia doorstep. I wish all gallery experiences were as good as this one.

In fact, I filled half a suitcase with fabric for two quilts on our honeymoon and then called and they shipped more! Well, it had been two years since my last visit and I wonder if they are under new ownership or have fallen on hard times because it is not what it used to be. First, it was really hard to find the hours because each source was a little different. There isn't a recording on their number and the website was down. We eventually chose to drive by on the weekend to learn they would be open until 2 on Monday. We worked it into our plans to go there specifically and I regret doing it, sadly. The shelves are barren. There were just a few options for Hawaiian fabrics. I didn't check the prices because there wasn't anything I wanted to buy. The employees did not speak to us, and my husband remarked that you almost feel like they're annoyed you're in their store. I'm not someone who wants princess treatment, and I've never met a stranger, but something was just off. I also needlepoint and had seen a post somewhere that they carry canvases. There were two pinned to a board, sort of traditional Hawaiian designs but very simple. So I would buy my canvases off island if you're wanting to stitch on theme from paradise. I just really hope that they're doing okay and would also be delighted if the shop returns to its former glory one day as it was always a little slice of heaven to me.

Loads of quilt patterns, kits, and a good amount of already stitched souvenirs for purchase, too. I didn't have time for a class but there is a classroom in the back, too. All the supplies you'll need for any sewing project are there too. I enjoyed looking at all the Sashiko (Japanese embroidery) options, many cute buttons including some made out of coconut shells that I purchased to embellish my needlepoint finishes. The woman who helped was super sweet and patient with me as I would walk around and add items to my purchase. The prices seemed fair - a good balance because while it's a store that appeals to vacation stitchers like me, it's also clearly a spot that is well appointed for local stitchers, too, and that makes it a really lovely and well stocked place! A bonus is all of the signage is ADORABLE in the store. Quilted, embroidered, etc, just so cute! Will definitely be back next time. Mahalo! PS - if you're looking for needlepoint canvases you won't find them here. However, you're gonna need fabric to finish them! And you can find some of your supplies like thread conditioner, clips for finishing, travel snips, floss, beautiful zipper bags for your project, and the aforementioned buttons to embellish your projects so don't skip the store.
