My 7 year old daughter has been attending art lessons at Artworks for over a year now, and we've been happy with her progress. She has been learning a variety of techniques and working with various mediums like watercolor and oil pastels. Our daughter sometimes complains about the classes being too prescriptive, but we try to explain that mastering different techniques will be valuable down the road. I'd like to share all the due praise that ArtWorks (formerly KidsArt when I went there many years ago) deserves. I attended as an elementary/middle school student, from around ages 8-12 or so; now, I'm a professional working illustrator, painter, and graphic designer, and every day I appreciate the skills and techniques I learned at this studio. They showed us how to focus on and pay attention to every detail, and taught the fundamentals of each media in very consistent and thorough timeframes, allowing students to hone their skills and really get comfortable with each one before elevating you to the next level. I'd like to give them 5 stars for the art instruction and 1 star for their administrative approach and rude office managers. My son loves ArtWorks and the instruction has been excellent -the class is really a highlight of his week. That said, the scheduling process is terrible. The staff handling enrollment requests and schedule changes are rude and the overall process is neither transparent nor family friendly. They expect everything to be done by phone and offer 'same day' make up classes that are impossible for a busy family to utilize. Communications are typically lectures about their policies rather than any real attempt to find solutions. We'll keep attending because at the end of the day it's about the art, but I'm also going to continue to hope that they work on their terrible customer service. read more

We start going there from the beginning of this year, every time she goes there I can see improvement in her drawing. She really enjoys going there and learning new way to explore new stuff. My 6.75 year old daughter is attending ArtWorks Summer Camp this summer for the first time. While it's only her second day, she absolutely loves it! She's experiencing different mediums - drawing, painting, and clay art. The facility is clean, well lit, and spacious. I love the easels they have there as I've never seen that kind of set up before. We have her signed up for another week and right now, she wants to do just this camp next summer so I plan to sign her up for more weeks next summer as I think you get more bang for your buck than the other summer session she attended for a different kind of program. read more

Don't patronize these elitist douche bags with a we are better than you attitude!!! We received the phone call saying that they had 2 spots for my son and daughter on the day and time we wanted. I thought "what the heck my kids love art." The day comes when they are supposed to start. My son attends but my daughter doesn't because she had a sports camp. The art teacher takes my son to the art room. When he gets back I ask him what the proceedure is to sign him up and what the monthly tuition is. He didn't know and sent me to the office. The main rude office lady wasn't there...yay is what I thought but as it results there is more than one rude office lady. This lady, which didn't even bother to introduce herself or welcome us to the program, didn't seem like she wanted to be bothered by my tuition questions. She was more concerned about why my daughter couldn't make it. She felt like lecturing me on how she had saved my daughter a spot and next time I need to let them know when my daughter isn't coming. After her lecture, she finally breaks down the tuition and says it will be over $200.00 a month for both my children to attend. I showed my husband the monthly tuition and he said he didn't want to spend that much on art classes when the city of San Francisco park and rec offers classes for a fraction of the cost. The next day I call the office lady and tell her we will not be able to afford the art classes and have to pass up on "our spots". She huffs on the phone and says sorry that we can't afford the classes and then proceeds to lecture me again. She says that next time we know we won't be attending to please let them know because they were saving the spot for us. I think to myself, what an elitist biatch. Her attitude was nowhere near being sympahtetic for me or my children. Typically when you tell someone you are going through some rough times you don't get lectured and made to feel like shit about your situation. So I lectured her and said that next time they call someone to offer them a spot they should let them know what the monthly tuition is right off the bat so that the customer has a chance to make a knowledgeable decision. (Yes, I should not have assumed that it would not be as expensive as it was, got it.) The office lady assumed I knew everything about the inner workings of this art studio...I did not. Shame on you Artworks office staff! While you tend to well to do people and children, that doesn't give you the right to treat people like shit! Need I remind you that you are a secretary that is supposed to fully inform your bosses potential clients. If it was the owner I was dealing with...YOU SUCK and you need to go to the school of humble to learn how to treat people. While my children are easily replaceable, you shouldn't make us feel like you don't give a crap about us and our plight. So people, if you are down with elitist people and you want your children to be exposed to this kind of treatment by all means support this company!!! read more

My 11 year old daughter has gone to Artworks and its predecessor art studio Kids Art for about five years now. She has progressed through their children's art program with good speed and strong encouragement. She loves her teacher Jerry particularly, and has really developed into a fine confident artist. She is often asked by her teachers at school to design their bulletin board art. My son asked me to find him a painting class when he'd just turned 7. He's now 14 and still loves taking his Thursday afternoon class at Artworks, West Portal. He says it is the one time in the week when he can just be alone and concentrate. He has enjoyed the teachers and the range of media: pastels, watercolor, acrylic and oil. The teachers are professionals and artists. What a way for this kid to develop strong concentration skills and build his creativity. read more

Very good art school. I have been going five years and I can already easily sketch a dog with its muscular structure. They teach you all kinds of different medias. (Types of material, Ex. Watercolor) -pastel -colored pencil - marker -oil pastel -watercolor -sketching -ink -acrylic -oil paint The staff and teachers there are very nice and helpful. If you send your child there they will learn many things quickly. I also believe that they have adult classes if you wish to go yourself. The best thing about Artworks is that they teach how to make beautiful art painlessly, easily, and, most importantly, they teach you in a fun way. Great place. I recommend it. Five Stars. read more

She's always liked to draw, but she really likes the class, and has gotten much more seriously interested in art since she started attending: She asked me to buy her a book for grownups on how to paint, and has been going through it carefully. Part of this is her, of course, but I give a lot of credit to ArtWorks for stimulating her interest and developing her skills.
