My daughter Penny has absolutely loved her time here, but what has meant the most to me is watching how much her confidence has grown. She became more comfortable trying new things, more independent, and more confident in herself. As her Papai, getting to watch that kind of growth in her has been pretty incredible. The instructors are amazing. You can tell they genuinely care about the kids, and they have a way of making every child feel comfortable, included, and proud of themselves. It never felt like Penny was just another kid in a class. They knew her, encouraged her, and made her excited to come back. The camps were just as awesome. Penny looked forward to going, came home happy, and was always excited to tell me about what they did that day. Knowing she was somewhere she felt safe, had fun, and was surrounded by people who truly cared about her meant a lot to me. Unfortunately, Penny is back in school in Charlotte, so we won't be able to continue during the school year, but we will absolutely be back for summer camps. To everyone at The Little Gym of Asheville, thank you for everything you've done for Penny. The confidence you helped build in her is something she gets to take with her long after she leaves the gym, and as her Papai, I'm incredibly grateful for that.

Well, my friend and I had a girl weekend in Asheville and tried a few fun workouts while we were in…read moretown. My girlfriend has been an aerialist for 4-5 years now and I've only taken one class before but we knew we'd love it. I figured if I couldn't manage any of the moves well, at least I could provide comic relief, right? The other young lady in our group was an Asheville local who just started lessons a month and a half ago, so between us there were many skill levels represented. Being a compact space, there are only four silk stations available so we had the privilege of watching the instructor on a set of silks as well. Carly lead us through a stretching warm up before we practiced with the silks. When Carly saw what we were able to manage she would add to it, varying the tasks for each of us as we all had wildly different strengths and weaknesses. The music was fun, Carly was patient and had wonderful verbal cues as well as demonstrating for me when the verbal clues left me scratching my head. I wish I lived closer and could build my upper body strength and enjoy this unique workout more often. It was hard and fun and two days later my shoulders and back are still sore but I'd go back tomorrow if I could! Now, where is my Cirque du Soleil contract???

The lyra really digs into you, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and doubling up on fabric would probably also be pretty helpful. I'd been itching to take either a pole class or an aerial silks/lyra class for ages, and since I plan my travels around food and awesome fitness classes (priorities, right?), I definitely had to make a stop here before leaving Asheville! I called beforehand to make sure that it was okay for me to take the aerial lyra class, and the lady I spoke to was really helpful and friendly. (I'd only taken one class before, and that was quite unfortunately back in early 2012, so uh...it's been a while!) ...But my goodness, this was a super fun class! Evan was our instructor, and there was only one other student, so we started the class off with a light warmup, and then jumped right in. Evan was really good about explaining everything, and also in evaluating where we were at so that he could tailor the class to our level. We took turns going through a sequence and learning how to clean it up and make it look pretty + fluid. He was also really great about giving us pointers and cues, which was definitely helpful when we were puzzling out a couple of the moves. All in all, super super fun, and I really hope to come back to Asheville at some point again to visit, and so I can take more classes here! The handbalancing class that Evan teaches looks like a lot of fun, and I'd love to take more aerial lyra (+ silks!) classes!

"(It finally feels like the time to share this information, mainly because it has been so hard for Belay to answer the question "How is gymnastics going" to so many adults day after day. His friends all know this already.) As many of you know Belay's dear gym coach since he was about 3 recently had to leave the area for family reasons. The two of them had an indescribable bond and he was like a 3rd parent to Belay. The only other gym with a boys team in the Asheville area was Hahns Gymnastics. After weeks of soul searching and thinking on it Belay made the commitment to move onto Hahns in order to stay in the sport he has grown to love and excel at. In early September Belay came home as asked to cut off his dreadlocks. I was taken by surprise because Belay has always loved his hair and felt a huge amount of pride in it. Now the events that unfolded in the week that followed that Monday evening in early September are too much to write on this one post. Long story short, they lied to Belay and told him he had to cut his hair in order to compete. They said he will lose points. That the judges will be "annoyed" by his hair. None of this is true or legal. Slowly things unfolded in a safe place with Belay and his therapist. Slowly Belay began to tell us the way he was treated during the 2 months he spent at Hahns Gymnastics. My stomach churns to rewrite this as it brings up the painful experience my 10-year-old Black child lived. He was bullied and abused by 2 adult men in front of other children. He was racially targeted, lied to, grooming behavior became suspected as they tried to convince Belay his parents were "lying" and "forcing" him to do things that were wrong. He was ridiculed and mocked for his hair, his medical conditions, his skin color etc. He walked into the gym feeling like a rockstar and walked out feeling like a nothing ( his words) I have pages and pages of details that were reported to me and Andy. We have been to the commissioner of NC gymnastics, we have been to his state team and regional team coaches ( as he is on these teams as well). We have spoken with WLOS and spent countless hours with Belay in therapy. He walked out of that gym on September 4th and was promised he will never step foot back in there. We have chosen at this time to respect Belay and keep him out of the media by his request. This does not mean we are being cowards or not teaching him to stick up against adult bullies and racists. He is 10 and is living this very real pain. Our priority right now is healing as a family unit. Belay is experiencing one of the hardest times of his young life right now. He is refusing all sports and says he will never play another sport again. He tried to throw away all his medals to never think about Gymnastics again. This is coming from a boy who has lived and breathed sports his whole life. All because of the way 2 grown men decided to treat him. This is not the end of the road for Belay. He will grow and heal and continue to be the great man he is destined to be, and he knows he has parents who will never be okay with him being treated the way he was. I signed up my child for the Little Ninjas class, which is for toddlers. Evidently they think that…read moretoddlers don't need proper coaches because we got coaches who clearly don't know what they're doing. The main coach was MODERATELY better than the second coach and seemed to find his footing as he bumbled along, so I won't name him here. He was young and obviously inexperienced, but there was some improvement by the end. That being said, he would present the course as he wanted them to move through it, then stand in one place and help them only through that one portion. This is unreasonable. A coach should move around and help the kids on all the parts as much as possible. There were kids who were clearly uncomfortable and/or unable to do other portions of the obstacle course, but this was ignored. The second kid, "Coach" Jonathan, couldn't have been more than 17 years old. He didn't do A.N.Y.T.H.I.N.G. He went to a portion of the obstacle course, told the kids to go on it, stood there and "helped" them through that small portion while ignoring them otherwise. He did not try to correct their behavior in any way and even laughed when they were acting inappropriately. I don't feel that my child gained any skills here or received any amount of guidance, and I would not recommend the Little Ninjas class to anyone on that basis.

All the kids were jumping, tumbling, going through the courses rolling, climbing. A lot of them seemed to enjoy the pits of blocks. There are two. Even the adults had some fun, climbing the ropes, jumping in the pits. You do have to take your shoes off so bring socks. There is a waiting area for adults and/or kids to sit. There was an extremely small area where the food was with a table for adults and a table for kids to eat. I would say around 12 adults and maybe 6-8 kids could fit comfortably in the eating area. However the space to play is huge. 20 or more kids with their parents and guardians could easily run around the area without getting in each other's way. Parking is small. On the weekend it looks like you can park in front of Pottery Market and Microtech Knives even though those spaces have reserved signs. I don't know how much the parents paid for the party. But they had two hours of play I believe but it looks like they had the facility for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. No one is directing or anything, it's like a free for all... meaning the hosts control when the kid's play, eat food, cake, etc. Someone from the gym was walking around. He was friendly, especially when showing kids how to use equipment and making sure they are using it right. It's worth checking out for parties. I know my kids are going to be exhausted tonight. Definitely will consider this in my area for my daughters 5th birthday party.

My daughter became intrigued with aerial arts when she saw a performance at a local talent show…read more We did some digging, and found Empyrean through a youth group in Asheville. We signed her up for a trial lesson, and she was hooked! She has now taken classes in three different disciplines, with four different instructors, and every session, she comes home raving about her instructors and her experience. She is twelve, but she does all of the adult courses, and is treated like a capable athlete. Unlike some dance, and/or gymnastics we've tried, this is a more personal level of instruction, with small classes (3-8 participants) and encouraging teachers. After one particular session, she reported how much she loves the studios, because they leave her feeling so "zen". Again, she is twelve. Because of the tremendously positive experiences, her best friend, and her adult sister now take classes as well. If you have ever been even mildly curious about aerial acrobatic arts - silks, lyra, even pole fitness, definitely give Empyrean studios a try!

My daughter asked for a horse experience for her 9th birthday, and I reached out to several local…read morestables to ask about bringing a small group of her friends for instruction and experience grooming and riding (all beginners). I was not asking for a "party experience" - just a group lesson. Pegasus Hill Farm was the only stable that responded immediately and positively. They worked with my schedule and were prompt, honest, and professional in all communication with me. They even offered the use of their picnic tables and/or field for us to bring a picnic/cake if we desired. As the day approached, the weather was looking iffy, and the stable doesn't have their covered arena built yet. They offered to change the date or change up the experience to grooming and painting a horse if I could bring non-toxic paint. Horse painting! A new one for me. The day of the lesson, the staff at Pegasus Hill welcomed us even though we arrived 30 minutes early. They were very kind and hands-on with our group, and got the kids started with the grooming and painting. Several of the kids were able to get a short ride led by a staff member before the rain started. The staff were so kind and professional, even when some of the paint didn't totally wash off of the horse (stay away from hot pink/red!). And Megan even took the remaining two kids for a short ride after the rain stopped, though our scheduled time was nearly up when I asked. I am very excited that my girl is going to one of their camps this summer. All the horses seemed content and healthy, the stables are new - bright and airy, and the the staff are so generous and kind. The stable is located in a very picturesque area with great views of the surrounding mountains, yet it was a short easy drive from I-26. I feel very confident in their attention to safety and comfort for the kids. What a great experience!
