I've been going to this YMCA almost daily for 4 years now. You can't beat the membership cost, which gives you access to all 7 YMCAs in WNC and guest access to most locations nationwide. With one fee you have access to tons of group classes, workout equipment, pools, saunas and hot tubs (just not this location), sports courts, childcare, and more! They often offer addition programming or sports leagues as well based on interest. Plus, you're supporting an organization that helps the community vs putting money into some CEO's pocket. The food bank run out of this location is an excellent volunteer opportunity as well. Everyone is so friendly - staff and fellow gym-goers, and it's not pretentious. Anyone of all ages and fitness abilities can go here and feel comfortable working out. The instructors and trainers are excellent and willing to help with anything you could need. The staff know you by name and listen to any concerns you may have. They're always looking for ways to improve. Do I wish the building was newer and included things other gyms have? Yes, of course, but for me the YMCA can't be topped. read more

This is a pretty great location with a charismatic, helpful, and respectful staff. All the equipment and amenities you need to make small or big changes to your wellness routine are at arms reach and a nice sense of belonging echos through the facility because the staff is pretty warm and welcoming. The gym and equipment are well kept and the reps on site are knowledgeable, attentive, and eager to help you get the most out of your experience. They also have a variety of relevant and engaging classes and programs. Happy I joined! read more

The facility needs more handicapped parking spaces. Anytime you go in the morning, the current spaces are all full. This makes it difficult or impossible for people with physical disabilities to have access to the facility. read more

I only belong to this gym for using the pool facilities, which really helps with my arthritis. And repeatedly in this past year, I double check their schedule to make sure the north pool is open - and I show up and they have it closed "due to shortage of life guards." At the very least, could they change their schedule to let people know before driving all of that way? And how about having some back up life guards? We pay good money for this membership - and then, to not provide the services promised???? read more

One of the most disappointing experiences I have had in a gym. I have been to many gyms like LA Fitness, Columbia Athletic Association, Denver Athletic Club, and lifetime Fitness but this was the least impressive among all of them. Firstly, their facilities are pretty out dated. Although they have a decent workout area, their locker room was very old fashioned. Rusty lockers, steam wasn't being regulated automatically in the steam room and sauna had bad stench to it. Showers are pretty small too. Secondly, the most disappointing was the age discrimination on the basketball court. I was here on a Saturday morning around 10 am and there were few people playing. I took some shots on the open hoop on the sides. I asked a couple of guys on when I would get my turn. They said that as soon as the current game is done they would pick me in one of the teams. The main guy was watching my shooting session. I can ball pretty well so when it came to selecting teams he shouts out a rule that under 35 players are not allowed to play during this time until 12 noon. I was so pissed because no one other than that guy knew about this rule. I could see some younger players playing there. I asked the other older guys and younger guys there and they were not aware of such things. Well, I am glad I don't live in Asheville otherwise I would definitely be so pissed if were a member of this gym. And This gym is closed on Sunday's morning until 1pm. My main workout days are on the weekdays, I can't imagine being a member of this gym. read more

This YMCA recently did a huge renovation to it's facilities and that has really made this space an awesome gym. Although I've been coming here for like a billion years, honestly the reason I was going for so long was simply convenience of location. Since they've made the upgrades to their space though, I honestly go here because it feels welcoming, comfortable and motivational. The Y is always well-staffed with friendly employees who are happy to help with anything such as finding a class on the schedule or how to use a new exercise machine. There are always personal trainers doing training sessions with guests (pro tip: watch what the trainers are having the trainees do and steal their moves, haha), lifeguards on duty at the pool, and staff in the lobby. Their exercise machines are in excellent condition, I haven't come across one that is out of service in years. They have a bunch of treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, stair climbers and other cardio machines all facing the window with excellent natural light and a bunch of TVs. I always try to get near the one playing HGTV so I can watch Joanna and Chip Gaines to daydream and help time go by faster. They also have a bunch of group exercise classes such as Zumba, Tabata, Yoga, TRX, Cycle, Water aerobics, and Athletic Conditioning. I'll admit that the instructors have been kind of hit or miss but regardless I'm grateful to have so many options. I just keep crossing my fingers that they'll get a cafe with smoothies, granola, etc again one day in the future. read more

Pool is always extremely busy. Not enough life guards over weekends. Locker rooms are dated, but people are friendly and nice.

Every time I come here there are always people benching in the squat rack which is fine because they only have one bench! However, whenever I try to do the same thing because the bench is taken the trainers will always tell me I have to move. Without fail, there is always someone else doing the same thing that doesn't have anything said to them. Weird double standards. read more

Believe it or not, I go to the gym. Not as often as I'd like, nor as often as I should. But I do go. I've been to three gyms in the Asheville area, the Rush, the YWCA, and now the YMCA. I like to think of the YMCA as my Goldilocks gym. Not too crazy, not too low key, just right. I've rarely had to wait for a machine, and no one is shouting at their partner to "get there, get it, c'mon one more". The machines, from treadmills to ellipticals to rowers and weight machines are all well taken care of and clean. Everyone is diligent about wiping down their equipment and putting their weights back where they belong. Here's the best part... Free Wi-Fi! Now I don't have to worry about the data associated streaming full albums while I work out, or catching up on whatever series I'm binge watching on netflix while using the stair climber. The Y makes life easy. Also, I've never found brocoli or noodles in the shower. Which is great. read more

I grew up in Asheville. I have to write YMCAs are great gyms, unfortunately this one is not.....and it isn't for the fact of the folks that work there...nope, they are very helpful! Its the condition of the building. This place has really not been updated since I was in Middle School (hint...that was decades ago). Considering how much money these folks bring in it is shocking they've not done any major expansions or renovations on this location....so much so, I decided to not go here, but instead go to the new YMCA in Woodfin. You'd think with such growth in this town they'd work to upgrade this location, but instead it like a time machine back to the 1970s. read more

She helped me from the time I walked thru the door til the time I left. Great programs and the pool is warm! Everyone is friendly and helpful. This was not just a beefcake gym. Actually there was a great diversity of people sizes and colors enough for anyone to feel comfortable. My only complaint is the desk staff gives me conflicting info about programming, passes me on to directors voicemail when they have the info available to themselves. They also charged me twice when I asked for a different class. It all worked out but maybe some better training for desk staff. read more

I love this Y. Great facilities, friendly trainers, Kaitlin at the front is super amazing and so helpful! LGBTQ welcoming and supportive, new work out machines. Love it! Cons: No 24 hour access, Chris is kinda stern, random people park in their lot and go into town and the Y does nothing to prevent it, so members have to park in the further away lot. Those things aside, I really like it here and am very pleased with my membership. read more

The renaissance hotel's amenities are under Reno and we were sent here for the pool. Not the best swimming/relaxing experience. If you prefer standing while your kids swim while trying not to be splashed, come here. Towels are $1 each- blah. It's a shame because I've been to much better YMCA. read more

my partner and i have been members here for a few years...before the renovation. We were happy here even though we took a long break after a bad car accident prevented us from working out. We're back now for the past couple months and this review is solely for the disconnected and embarrassing response to their well-known parking lot issues, specially the disabled spots. There are NOT enough spots and ZERO spots designated for vans with wheelchair lifts. A dear friend, who uses a wheelchair, uses the Y everyday, EVERY day. She has difficulty parking in an accessible spot 95% of the time. Often she has to park across the street and as you can imagine this is not ideal, especially in inclement weather. As an advocate for my friend and all people having difficulty parking in the assigned spots I have made phone calls and had a mini-meeting with the ED. During a brief meeting just the other day I also met with a woman who I had a lovely discussion with earlier, 2 weeks ago. On that call she was appropriately concerned and basically said a bunch of stuff that lead me to believe that she understood the dire issues with the lack of enough parking for their disabled clients. I offered a (temporary) solution...to change the "van accessible" spot to a "van only" spot. You see, those lines next to most disabled parking spots are on purpose, so vehicles with wheelchair lifts can get in and out of their vehicle. She agreed enthusiastically and said "great idea, I would have never thought of that." Then, just a few days ago, in a face to face meeting, she said she hadn't followed up on our discussion from 2 weeks ago, no reason no apology, just that she hadn't. What is the deal with you all, the powers that be, at the Y?? A staff member at the desk told me that they discussed the issue and had decided that inconveniencing my friend in the wheelchair wasn't reason enough to designate one parking spot "Van Only"...because the spot would remain empty for the other 12 hrs the Y is open. ARE YOU SERIOUS? Yes, I'm afraid he speaks for everyone in power there and they are serious. Their mission statement invites people from everywhere with ALL FORMS OF ABILITY. It's the first one in their posted statement!! They bill themselves as all inclusive, inviting/recruiting the senior population who of course could have more mobility issues yet when they arrive there's inadequate parking spaces. I've seen the disabled spots full... yet open regular spaces even closer to the gym, empty. Something has to be done and the leadership at the Y needs to be doing it!! No more consultants, no more meetings...just designate more spots, make at least one spot "Van ONLY" and do it with generosity of spirit. I am so tired of identifying this problem, bringing it to their attention, offering some solutions only to be met with pushback or empty promises and lip service. And I'm able-bodied...can you for just a moment imagine those who need the Y for pain relief, community or just trying their best to stay active...the energy it might take to even get to the gym in the first place...only to find no available parking spots?! I will add that during the renovations there were daily issues with access to the Y because the construction company would forget to place the ramp which allows a wheelchair to go up a curb or step. Their excuse then was that "oh, they forgot." how about when hiring a company you absolutely grill them on the on the importance of having access during all hours off operation? The Y cannot punt that away and feel good...where is the oversight?? I've also been told there is no staff to manage the parking situation... this is a lame copout. One can only extrapolate, from my experience, that no one in charge at the Y uses a wheelchair or loves anyone in a wheelchair. This is discrimination, folks...this is exactly what it looks like. Action item for anyone who loves the Y and uses it: Please write letters, call, tweet...help them realize they need to do so much better. Thank you. read more

Horrible place. Locker rooms is disgusting. Mold in the showers. I paid for a locker and somebody cut my lock and took my ear buds and shoes. YMCA told me it wasn't there problem and there is nothing they could do about it. I have moved on to golds and am much happier. read more

This review covers PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS only!! This is not a comment on any other services. We have had AWFUL experience with the communication and reliability of the private swim lesson program. Last year we signed up for 4 lessons for $100. Lesson #1 was fine, Lesson #2 the pool closed for lightening and NO ATTEMPT made to contact and let us know, we showed up, got all the way to the pool and lifeguards standing around and the pool had been closed for at least an hour. Lesson #3 - the South Pool had been closed for renovations for days and we got NO CONTACT about that. We promptly asked for all of our money back, yet only received reimbursement for the 3 lessons that didn't happen. This year we decided to try again - why not?? Pool is fixed. Lesson #1 - fine. Lesson #2 - instructor nowhere to be found, finally ask Mr. Nathan what is going on, he offers to give us a lesson himself, that's fine, and then brings over another instructor and asks my 5 year old to choose. What?? Anyways, we rolled with it and had our lesson start 30 minutes late. Confirmed with Nathan and the mortified instructor who didn't show up on time, but made it to her group lesson that we would be seeing HER next week and the following week for Wednesday 3:30pm lesson. Lesson #3 - Guess what - NO INSTRUCTOR, NO DIRECTOR TO BE FOUND AT 3:30PM today. Sent pretty harsh email demanding this get fixed and completely reluctant to try again. IN SHORT - I COULD NOT RECOMMEND EVERY TO TRUST THE YMCA WITH PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS - FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE. OH YEAH, AND THE SOUTH POOL IS SUPER CROWDED DURING THE PRIVATE LESSONS, BARELY ROOM TO SWIM. Yes, this YMCA is old and the parking situation is not the best, but the staff is why I keep coming back. Every time I go into this Y I am greeted nicely and they answer any questions I have. The group fitness room is very large, which is nice because it can hold more people. This YMCA is where my niece learned to swim. I took her here from the time she was 3 to 5 years old. The staff made it so she was comfortable with the water and offered to have her in the parent child class until she was confident enough to go to the child class. This place is the reason why she loves to swim. I hated swimming growing up and I am glad she conquered her fears! read more

Even with the remodel of the weight room, there is still a serious overcrowding problem. They have one bench press. One. Regardless of time of day, you will probably be frustrated if your objective is to lift weights. If you like people impatiently staring at you while you use a machine, or love standing in line for dumbbells and benches, this place is for you. And no, going at off hours doesn't seem to help. #1 It's old. #2 the pools are woefully outdated #3 The accessibility score for the facility is a 2 out of 10. No push-button doors anywhere. No wheelchair accessible shower or even men's restroom facilities. Anywhere. There is a non handicapped-friendly gate leading from the locker rooms to the pool. I understand this is to keep kids out, and is required, but there are better solutions. Also, the ramp up to the pool deck from the locker rooms is so not ADA standard. Time passed this building by and it needs a lot of work to become accessible by any stretch. read more

I am loving this gym more than any gym I have ever belonged to. The classes are professional, instructors really know what they are doing. They all have the equipment I need. So awesome that you can have access to all YMCAs in NC and the whole country I believe! I like the Candler YMCA as well. Quiet and quaint with a nice cross fit room, and ping pong table! Since I enjoyed on 1/2/18 I have been at least 16 days to the Y. VERY affordable family rates. VERY family friendly. Can't wait for turbo kick tonight ((: read more

They have given full free weight room control to the trainers. (Jesse) They have let the trainer build the room to fit their needs to make money training people. They must have forgot who pays the staff there at the Y. Its people who you took away from to advance your training programs. I'm all about making money but not when It takes away from the people who pay their hard earned money and your pay checks. One bench...really. Come on man, you know better. Its funny but I never see any trainers using the beach to train people on....lol Its the spot where the other bench use to be that made the room for them. Also, It took me four lockers today before I found one that would lock when i used my on lock. But every time I come In the y there on Woodfin street I see three to four people behind the desk being payed to make sure people coming in have membership.. I will never come back In the Y on Woodfin even though It Is very close to my downtown home. I will be going to Biltmore Sq. Seems the higher ups don't let the trainers and staff run that Y to promote their on money making programs and take away from the people who pay hard earned money to have equipment they enjoy using. read more

The pool is good for laps at times, some classes are worthwhile, and the expanded fitness space is adequate. However, the focus here is not on those seeking a clean, well appointed fitness gym. The locker rooms (men's anyway) is disgusting. Smelly carpet, ancient lockers, black mold (?) in air vents, unsavory characters spending hours just 'hanging out' in locker rooms while storing all of their worldly possessions in the lockers. Don't count on the steamroom; it's often out of commission. read more

I really want to love this ymca because it's right near my house but I just don't. The staff is pretty friendly the few times I've interacted with them here. They have nice amenities like the pool and courts and stuff. Their hours are pretty reasonable. The parking lot is way too small for how many people are here all the time. But what I really can't stand about this Y is the work out room. The ceilings are so short, there's way too many machines and people in that small, tiny room. They plan to remodel in March and I hope that helps. The room is too tight and the air isn't circulated well so it always reminds me of a cramped elevator full of smelly people. read more

This Y is amazing! The staff is so friendly and always helpful. I don't do the gym a lot but I play basketball. The courts usually don't have a wait and their goals are adequate. The only down side is that in the boys locker room the toilets are dirty but everyone just pees on to the floor, so that solves that. read more
