We ended up here after my daughters visit to the ER to follow up with them after her discharge…read more The office made it easy to make an appointment for the same day we called. Upon arrival, they check you in immediately and provide all the necessary paperwork that needs to be filled out. Wait time to see the doctor was average however the level of communication between the front office staff and the nurses could be a lot better. One did not know what the other was doing. Not to mention the one test that needed to be performed the tech went to lunch while were were there so we were presented with the option to wait the 30 minute for her to come back or come back another day? Wait, say what?? We are already here why would we leave and come back, plus if it was even a possibility that the times conflicted why not schedule the appointment to account for lunches, etc? I digress, even still after having the breathing tests done they sent her back to the waiting room to wait for the results. After sitting there for another 20 minutes and being asked if we needed anything else, then the tech explains that they would not have the results for 3 to 5 days. Wait, say what so we sat for a wasted 20 minutes when we could have left had that information been conveyed properly the first time around. I will leave the decision up to my daughter if she wants to continue coming here after her follow up visit for her results.

I went to Dr Oraee ONCE... back in the early 2000's when his office was on Opitz Blvd. When I…read morecalled to make the appointment I was told they were participating with my insurance. My co-pay was $20, I think. It's been 20+ years. I paid the co-pay. I waited quite a long time and when I finally got into the room I waited another 15 minutes. He comes in, doesn't greet me, looks at me and says something like, "if you're here for drugs, forget it." Ya see, I was in my late 40's at the time, hair way past my shoulders, and a few arm tattoos. He judged me by my looks, not my medical problem. I told him where my constant pain was and he gave me a script for Motrin 400. I was laughing inside.. He said come back and see me in 4 weeks. I went to the receptionist and made another appointment. About 2 weeks later I got a bill from them for the entire visit less the $20 I paid. I drove there to find out what the problem was. Then the same lady told me they didn't take the Blue Cross plan I had. I told her she told me he did. That's not my fault, it's yours. She said I still owed the money. I told her I'd pay on my next visit. I went home and called my insurance company. I was told that Oraee USED TO be but they canceled his contract. She said she can't tell me why, but he's NOT a participating physician. The next day I drove there again. I spoke with the same lady again. This time she was rude and started raising her voice. I told her to cancel my next appointment. Then she asked me for the money I owed. I told her to tell Oraee to take me to court and sue me. It's been about 20 years and I never heard anything. A few years after my experience, my now deceased sister-in-law, came to stay with us for awhile. She lived in a different state. She was already under doctor's care for pain management. She chose Oraee even after I told her my experience. I took her to her appointment. She had several empty bottles of the meds she was on. I waited for her and when she came out she had several scripts, all were controlled substances. So, I'm a man and he wouldn't give me anything but Motrin 400... but a 40ish yr old single female goes in and he gives her way more meds than anyone person needs. STAY AWAY!

I tried to call to schedule an appointment and could not reach the office. They asked me a bunch of questions and was on the phone for 20 minutes only for them to transferred me to the nurse station. There is no way to even call the office without now going through Sentara. When I finally got through with the nurse they send me to the ER. My doctor would have never send me to the ER for just and UTI. They do not care about the "Personal" interaction any more. I hate this office now. I miss my doctor a lot and the small office not some robotic agency. Dr. John was a great doctor and was very personal in the past. I'm guessing the change to be Sentara was a business decision that relieves Dr. John and his previous staff of day to day issues but it's a horrible change!!! Now we can't even talk to the office. If this is now the new normal with the change to Sentara it's definitely not patient oriented or in anyone's best interest. Actively looking for another doctor.

Nancy may be an asset for those of you besieged by chronic pain caused primarily by…read moresitting/lying/standing in bad positions. That's about the only "positive" I can say. I know Nancy wants to help, but she had me in tears by our 3rd appointment. By way of background, I have been diagnosed (yes, officially, by real doctors) with multiple herniated discs, myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia. Nancy did not "believe" that herniated discs can cause pain (ever) or that I had fibromyalgia (which often accompanies myofascial pain syndrome and painful conditions of many kinds - either fibromylagia or central nervous system sensitization problems.) Her approach was too simplistic and harsh for me. She wanted me to sit a certain way and lay in bed a certain way AT ALL TIMES and of course, this dramatic overnight change caused a big pain flare (like, huge) because yes, you're retraining your muscles to support you in ways they're not used to (and that's a positive) but doing it so suddenly and without cease is very hard on those muscles. She has no sympathy for this. When I told her I had to take more prescribed pain medication because I couldn't get through my day (school/work) at a desk sitting up completely straight in this one position, she told me that anyone who takes prescription pain meds is an "addict." I told her i was not that, because I was using the meds to ENGAGE in life, not to check out and "get high." I told her that responsibly using prescribed pain medication to function is NOT SAMHSA's definition of an addict, and I did not appreciate being called this. She was also rather angry and harsh with me verbally (and even physically on the table at one point - doing trigger point work - she put her hand over my mouth to shush me). She would become incredibly frustrated if I would so much as talk about having fibromyalgia too, or herniated discs (which my MRIs show) etc. and of these being factors in my pain as well. She called me a "victim of medical imaging technology." She told me that if I didn't trust her and her process completely and implicitly "this won't work" (about getting pain free), and this was after a week of having met her. This was brought on by my attempting to discuss the type of pain flares I was having and how there may be a hormonal connection - in order to further silence me. She told me pain was in my mind. She also brought her religion into it and gave me a Christian book she reccomended (i think she gives them out to all patients?) She told me to "just dance away my pain" (to get up and dance whenever I was in severe pain. She became upset when I applied chapstick in her office (?!) When I asked what kind of ergonomic chair i should buy for my home, she snapped at me to "use my head." I found myself arguing with her and asking her to please speak to me in a kinder manner so much during our 3rd session that it just wasn't worth my time. I think it's easy for those of us with chronic pain to want to believe that sometimes "tough love" will help us overcome very difficult and complex conditions. We have "tried everything" and so are willing to buy into some level of "no pain no gain" strategy. But Nancy's approach can be harmful, psychologically and otherwise. I DID take some helpful information from her - about how to sit, stretches to do, and to eat less sugar and more veggies. But the general harshness wasn't worth it. Crying in so much pain that I could barely breath and then being called an addict for taking the pain medication I need to function, and being spoken down to and blamed for the pain (and told the pain didn't really exist and that i didn't really have the diagnoses I have) - yeah, no thanks!! Oh also, I was told by the Certification Board for Myofascial Trigger Point Therapists (CBMTPT), after contacting them to see what the deal is, that she is NOT certified with them, despite what she has listed online.

They also reacted positively to my attempts at humor and were pleasant throughout my visit. They appeared to have no issues understanding how to process paperwork with the VA (unlike some urgent care clinics that try to charge me when they should not). Although the x-ray didn't want to work for me for some reason, I was quickly seen, evaluated, and given some helpful treatment. They used the electrical pulse therapy with an ice-pack and did a couple of adjustments that were painless and surprisingly helpful. I didn't realize how the adjustments could help while he performed them but they did. Finally, I got to perform "an adjustment" on the chiropractor (I popped his back). I apparently did a good job and he even mentioned that I provided "an adjustment" for him. Maybe I should look into learning more about chiropractic science. Other than the odd situation with the x-ray, all went well and I do feel better. I had a good experience here and I expect that you will have a good experience with Virginia Family Chiropractic for your future chiropractic needs. I look forward to my follow up appointment in a couple of days!!
