I am used to the Asian grocery stores in California: literally the OG shops that may not be in the best part of town, where you can smell fish no matter what aisle you were in, lacks organization, not everything has a price labeled on it, etc. So all of these things that others may have docked off stars for is not issue for me (and honestly makes me feel more at home LOL). It also makes sense since Asian food/grocery stores are only just up and coming in Winston, so it may be hard for them to establish in better locations. We also have H-Mart/G-Mart/99 Ranch in CA which are more standardized in terms of pricing and organization. Unfortunately for Winston-Salem, the closest big Asian store chains is G-mart in Greensboro and (to my knowledge) the closest H-Marts are in Cary/Raleigh and Charlotte. As a student here for school (and who constantly misses Asian food from CA and my mom's home cooking), this store is absolutely genuine in terms of Asian grocery stores. Despite the small size and limited inventory, it is the best thing Winston has. They have a freezer section with a bunch of frozen goodies (meat, meat balls/fish balls, wonton or egg roll wraps, and more) and some fresh items such as bean sprouts, bok choy, and various mushrooms. This place has a variety of spice packs for soups such as pho or adobo, sauces and seasonings, canned foods, dry noodles, dry mushrooms/beans, ramen packs, candy, instant coffee, and more. You 100% can get your bare necessities here for Asian cuisines and snacks. I've made pho, com tam, and mango sago from products purchased at this store. There is one employee who is also the owner. He reminds me so much of my dad and grandpa. He is genuinely very nice and eager to help. read more

If you're an Asian person like me, then you probably get your groceries at either G Mart in Greensboro or H Mart in Cary. It wasn't until recently that I figured out there was in Asian grocery store in Winston-Salem this was life-changing for me because I no longer had to drive over 30 minutes to get groceries to make Asian cuisine. Although the grocery store is fairly small and does not carry a lot of fresh foods, I am still very thankful that they cater towards the small percentage of Asians living in this city. They have things including curry blocks, quail eggs, Ramen, spicy chili oil, mochi powder, rice, and other stuff, only to name a few. The owner is an older middle-aged Asian man who may look mean but is very friendly and well-meaning. He will be able to answer any questions that you have to the best of his ability and will help you locate any item in the store. Personally, I always show him my grocery list because I can never find anything and he helps me every single time. Before you head to Gmart in Greensboro, be sure to check out the grocery store because it might save you a trip. read more

I had to really think about how I wanted to pitch this review, because I like the Asia Grocery but there are also several things that I wish were better about them. And the fact that their location is very convenient for me might cause me to rate them more highly than I should. If they were across town, would I think it was worth my time to shop here? Would I go to the trouble? Probably not. So you should take my comments with that grain of salt. There is quite a variety of Asian and eastern foods and condiments and such here, and I'm able to find what I'm looking for about 2/3 of the time. But when you go, plan on spending time looking and looking, because the scheme of organization is not especially clear, and they've not given English labels to all their shelves. It's sort of haphazard. Asking the cashier for assistance can be hit-or-miss. Depending upon who's managing the register, we do not always understand one another. Heads-up on credit cards: they've upped the minimum charge to $20.00 for charging your purchases, so I almost always have to have cash. read more

Seeing how it is the only Asian Grocery Store in Winston-Salem it is the go to for certain items unless you want to take the drive to Greensboro. The store is pretty cluttered but they pack a heck of a lot of stuff in the small shop. The same guy is always working who I think must be the owner and they seem to have decent hours since every time we head over there on a whim they are open. The fiance enjoys stocking up in the frozen food section and if you need any type of Asian sauce they will be sure to have it. The produce never looks too appetizing but they do have a ridiculous amount of instant noodle options if that is your thing! read more

Times must me hard for this store. I went in there to buy Sriacha and he had them priced for $6.99. I was going to buy 3 bottles but asked him for a bulk deal considering he increased the price by $2 a bottle??!! He became extremely mad and told me to buy them elsewhere. He refused to sell to me and said next week the price will be $7,99. So I told him to have a great day and I'll just buy them from Publix. He was extremely rude and angry and must not understand how customer service works. I do not recommend this store because if he is price gauging for hot sauce I'm sure other items are selectively inflated and probably out of date. read more

This grocery store has quite a selection of non-perishable goods like sticky rice, rice paper, a slew of rice wine vinegar, and other interesting Asian morsels. There are not many/any meat choices and their vegetable choices aren't too hot but they have several varieties of rice and coconut milk. I also like the KBBQ marinade but it's pretty expensive at $3.50 for a ~20oz bottle. It's nowhere as amazing as a "99 Ranch" that I'm used to back in California, but if you need Asian food in Winston Salem, this is probably your only choice. If you don't speak Chinese, be prepared for some... language barriers, but if you do, the shop owners can/will help you quickly. Also, they do not accept Amex but they do accept Visa. read more

You know what's cheap here, their instant noodles!! But seriously though, minus the fact that they are not very good for you, comparatively speaking, their instant ramen is competitively priced. Other than that, I can't think of anything else that isn't overpriced for oriental grocery. Since my last review, I've changed my mind. I ventured out to Super H Mart and Li Ming's to test the water out once again. Both of these international food establishments are in Greensboro. I have to say, I'd MUCH rather make the trip out to Li Ming's than here. The Variety is extensive!! Also, the prices are much better, for the extra 15 minute that I drive, I might as well make it up with more variety, fresher produce, much more organized isles, cleaner environment. Either way, it takes me at least 15 minutes to get out to Peters Creek, which is where Asian grocery is. And as we all know, Peters Creek is not really close to anything, unless if you are trying to hit up a car dealership. Overall, Asian Grocery just can't compete with bigger Asian grocery/international grocery establishments. Overall, come here if you just need the basics, don't be offended if prices are a tad high and the area is a sketchy and some products are expired. Be open minded, don't judge, don't take things personally and just be dedicated to experiencing Asian cuisine. Hard to get around in the store, the aisles are cluttered and the store isn't overly clean. There is the smell of rotting food that hits you in the face the minute you walk in the door that is obnoxious. The owner/employee, I don't know nor do I care which could not be bothered from looking up from his laptop movie he was watching to say hello and when I asked for a price on one item you would have thought I asked him for his wallet. He was very annoyed by me, a mere mortal speaking with him to purchase something. My irritation aside they did have a lot of sauces and I was cooking that night so I bought what I needed as to not run all over town looking for stuff. This tiny little store packs a punch! It's the ONLY store in Winston that sells asian groceries, so in a pinch, it will have to do. The place is packed with a great selection of sauces, noodles, rice, and other bottled/canned ingredients you cannot find any place else in Winston. The selection on the frozen and fresh produce isn't great, and for those items - if I have time and need them - I would drive out to Greensboro, but for everything else, this is local and easy to get to. The owner isn't super friendly, but hey... that just adds to the authenticity! Don't let the sketchy strip clubs towards this end of Peters Creek scare you off. ;) I'm giving this a four star rating only cos there's no competition out here for this kinda grocery store. read more

I used to love going to this store but then they started gouging me on prices. I went inside and got items many times... like seaweed which was $5. But I sent my autistic son inside once and they charged $13 for the same thing I had Just bought 3 days before. And they wouldn't let me return it even though he had just walked out of the store. And my son said they ignored him and then told him to "MOVE!" I've never been back. The place is always nasty and boxes are blocking paths. read more

These guys had all of the Korean staples I needed (that Whole Foods didn't have) to make Bo Ssam, and it looked like they stock some Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Chinese items, too. A store filled with food, condiments and candy - that you can normally only see in anime can't be all bad! This place is a hidden treasure of Asian goodness. The owner/ operator is generally helpful and where else can you find Ramune soft drinks and squid brand fish sauce in the greater Winston area? My suggestion is to buy some strange looking items.... Your kids will get a kick out of it and, you might just find something you like. On the down side, the location does looks like an Iraqi demilitarized zone and is just about as safe. Items are jumbled on shelves with poor labeling so you'll have to look around. But the positives far outweigh the negatives people. So, stop by this joint and at your next dinner party - your friends will be impressed with your authentic stir fry and exotic spices. read more
