I come here more often for non-food items (bowls, lunar new year decorations, paper/joss money, and incense) that the other stores don't usually carry. Sometimes they have the frozen/packaged items you can't find or are out of stock at the other Asian grocery stores around town. I don't usually get produce here. Nice small store. read more

Be super cautious when you pay with a visa reward card! The register takes your card to pay and they steal your card information. We got a bunch of fraudulent transactions after we paid by a visa reward card and that was the first time we went there. read more

While we were visiting, my fiance (who is from China) wanted to whip up a big authentic Chinese dinner for my family. The first place to come up was Asian Food Store for the supplies. They carry a variety of things - a number of sauce bases from Southeast, East, and South Asia, rice, a lot of asian snacks, produce, meat, seafood, etc. It reminded me of a small market that would be in the Vietnamese section of Chicago (Argyle in Uptown) or a smaller Asian market you might find in NYC. It's not huge, but they have a number of things you might need and their Asian snack section is not bad at all. They carry some things I haven't seen much of anywhere like durian coffee mix, durian snacks, etc. The produce I feel is probably hit or miss - I'm guessing you'd probably want to get there earlier in a day for the most fresh produce. The meat/seafood is probably similar too in that regard. We picked up a bunch of ground pork and it was okay - not the best but not the worst ground pork. Also really glad they carry packets of enoki mushrooms, which are delicious with melted butter, garlic (and you could wrap bacon around it if you want). Prices were fair and not expensive, at least what we're used to and some things are cheaper than what you'd find at bigger grocery stores nearby like Hy-Vee. Overall, for a small city like Rochester, it's good a place like this exists. Hopefully they expand as the Asian community expands too. Solid 4 stars. read more

Hello bahn mi. Head to the back of the store near the meat section and find these delicious cold sandwiches waiting for you. Grab one to go. 3.99. Instant picnic. (I am sooooo sad I discovered this just now as I am moving away soon). They also have fresh exotic produce (kaffir lime leaves are CHEAP here. I got a ton to freeze for curries and Tom ka soup.). Split Hocks for ramen broth and large cheapish live lobster (12.99 a pound) round out this place. It's not the largest Asian Food Store I've been to but Rochester is a small town. If you need a huge bag of good sushi rice, or live crabs or lobster at a cheap price, this is the place! It's not the best Asian food store I've been to, but there's a pretty good variety of the necessary staples. Heck, they even have QP Mayonnaise! Not joking, this stuff is an absolute necessity in Japan, it seems. Nothing like American mayonnaise. Mayonnaise aside, the Asian Food Store has huge 20 - 50 pound bags of Japanese rice (my fave for stir fry and curry at home) at prices you won't find in the normal grocery store. The folks there are really nice, too. The only thing a little disarming is the overwhelming smell of fish in the store. It's also not uber-clean and new looking, but most stuff is pre-packaged, so I wouldn't worry. There are huge fish tanks in the back and the ventilation might not be that great. Bad service. If I could, I hoped I could give zero star. The food is never fresh. Always say it's good, that's good but when it wasn't good, couldn't return. Feel like spend stupid money and waste time. The employees are unfriendly, feel likes I went there to get free, didn't need to spend money. Today is my first time stopped in Asian Food Store and my shopping there was great. Since I bought a lot, so I didn't have problem using my credit card there. As an asian grocery store in a kinda small town, AFS does offer a large variety of asian products to its customers.The only problem I have is the sanitation of their coolers. Compared to Asian Pacific Market, I can only rate AFS 4 stars. But I still strongly recommend you guys go there to buy some Chinese snacks. Of course, Asian Pacific Market does have lower prices and the owner is always nice. read more

This store seems to have a good variety of Asian ingredients! Pretty clean and well organized. Interesting hot foods (not sure if it is a Friday only thing but definitely worth checking out). Live seafood and other selection of frozen seafood. Definitely has necessities for Asians living in the area (or those who enjoy using Asian ingredients)! read more

I wish I could be positive about this place but when the biggest & likely most profitable Asian grocery store sends me to my car to scrounge up change because she doesn't want me to use my credit card and then I'm a dollar short she makes me remove my chicken wing situation happened I promised I wouldn't return. The store down the street took my cc with a dollar amount less than what I had at the afs. I understand surcharges and such but when this incident occured was after months of being a frequent shopper.i rarely use cc at small business just for that reason, the day I'm forced to use it I end up with humiliation and inconvenience. After seeing my face weekly for months this is my thanks? Ridic. The produce is fresh on Fridays, look closely at the other stuff in the fridges-- often molding, rotting and disgusting. They have pretty good prepared SE asian foods. I wouldn't buy anything that's in the fridge case as you can't be sure how long it's been there (they don't throw anything away, just make some mental notes and visit a few months later and you'll see what I mean-- I'd love to culture it and see what grows...). There are three other businesses with better customer service, cheaper, cleaner, and fresher. I used to go for the produce & prepped food, but things change fast & I'm pleased to say I can get all these things elsewhere, in a cleaner environment and cheaper! This is one of the best Asian markets we've been to since my husband moved to the States two years ago. Excellent variety of ingredients from S.E. Asia, Japan, and China; and everything is very fresh. The store is very clean and the owners are a wonderful family that work very hard to make sure they are selling the best products for their customers. It has been fun getting to know them and they are always willing to help us find what we need. Great market, great people, great prices. read more

Recently relocated to the area and have been in this store a few times (not by choice but forced given the lack of diversity down here). The guy that runs the register is actually friendly and helpful. The lady, however, not sure if it's his wife but she is a bit rude, arrogant/condescending. Flashes her huge diamond ring and tells me she how they don't take American Express because they're a "small family business"- (you sure seem to be doing well) but not before she eyeballs you up and down. I was craving noodles and I bought a bag of the pre-made wonton noodles, not even a couple days later when I opened it- this sour, rancid stank just permeated the kitchen. As I unraveled it, there was green mold all over 3 out of the 4 portions. It wasn't worth the $1.99 to deal with the the lady. I agree with the other reviewer, these people don't like throwing away things and this is alarming, especially when many products they sell don't have expiration dates listed. The vegetables that they probably wrap in-house don't look fresh either, about 80% of the inventory is wet/wilted/over ripened. The variety of things they carry aren't that great, and I've already lowered my expectations down here. But please LOOK for the expiration labels if possible. read more
