This was my first time in a Hy-Vee store. I was primarily there because I'd been told it was the most likely chain grocery to have a great cheese selection, and wow, was that true! Fantastic diversity of artisan cheese, local, national, and import. I'd signed up for a Hy-Vee member card ahead of time and scouted out ecoupons. Therefore, I shopped for a few things around the store. I knew where nothing was, but I managed to find what I wanted. Those discounts came through without a problem. I'd definitely visit a Hy-Vee again for the cheese selection. I only wish they had a location in Red Wing! read more

This review has a different spin to it. I'm reviewing the fair food that was available at Hy-Vee's parking lot a few Saturdays ago. My original thought was to get dinner here on Friday night. However, thanks to a lot of driving from Eagan to Elma, IA, and a shopping excursion in southern Rochester, I returned to Rochester the following day to check out the good fair eats. I am a Hy-Vee shopper. I didn't go to this store when I used to live in Rochester, as I lived in the north end. This store is close to where the first Panera Bread in the city was established before it moved to a new location closer to Trader Joe's. I found out about the food fair through a Facebook food truck post. I flagged it. It had me at corn dogs. I also had never had fried cheese curds, so I wanted to give them a try, too. There's plenty of parking in this lot. I was coming from highway 52, so it was straightforward passing by Apache Mall to get here. I parked fairly close to the brightly displayed signs and stalls, and walked over. It was a windy day. I looked at all three sections of food before I ended up at the one closest to the street. It had corn dogs. Signage was interesting. Although corn dogs and cheese curds seem to be repeated everywhere, corn dogs were at the stand closest to the street and the cheese curds were closer to Hy-Vee. The middle section had donuts and lemonade. I passed on them because I didn't have room to fit them into my tummy. Next time. I had a woman with a raspy voice take my corn dog order. I actually said hot dog by accident and was immediately corrected. Beware. You could accidentally offend folks here without trying. I apologized. Then again, when I think of a foot-long corn dog, it's a hot dog with cornmeal batter around it that's deep-fried to death. So, I wasn't completely wrong, but folks here take their corn dogs seriously. I paid with a credit card. All was great. I then stood there for ten minutes as orders were being placed and made. I got my corn dog and it looked yummy. I thanked the woman and went over to the condiments. With the wind, be careful trying to put garlic powder on your corn dog. My process was to put ketchup on it first, followed by the garlic powder, so that it could adhere to the ketchup. In theory, it made sense. With the wind, it had other plans. Some of the powder stuck. The rest of it blew away from me and created a mini garlic powder dust storm. I was so glad that I was facing the right direction. Otherwise, I would have looked like a ghost holding a corn dog. I then headed to the cheese curd section. I didn't want to get a bucket of fried cheese curds. What if I hated them? Instead, I got a single order. Garlic cheese curds (see a garlic pattern here?) was all I wanted. I paid with a credit card again and wait patiently for them. They smelled so good being deep-fried. I was so happy to get them handed to me in a small paper container. I got a napkin and pizza sauce. I thanked him and carefully headed to my car with my goodies. The corn dog hit the spot. It was technically lunch for me. The batter was crispy on the outside and the right amount of moisture inside. The hot dog was yummy. It wasn't salted to death. It was perfect. I liked the garlic powder with the ketchup. I will need to put garlic powder on all my corn dogs going forward. Brilliant! The garlic cheese curds were amazing. The benefit of being in Minnesota is that the cheese curd state of Wisconsin is next door. Cheese curd access is strong. The garlic flavour made these fried cheese curds so scrumptious. The thin, cripsy batter was delightful to eat. I dipped each one in the pizza sauce. Heavenly! How come I never had fried cheese curds before? It was my first time having them and it definitely won't be my last. If you do see fair food at Hy-Vee, take advantage of it. I'm glad that I did. It was worth hitting my old stomping ground of Rochester again to get my fix. (174) read more

Here's some high praise and something I rarely say about grocery stores when I travel, but you could take this place and put it anywhere and it would instantly be in the running for the best grocery store in the area, if not the frontrunner outright. Selection here is phenomenal, the store is gorgeous, layout is solid, mostly, prices were quite reasonable, and overall it was highly enjoyable, an absolute pleasure on my part, which I say approximate never about time spent in grocery stores, to peruse the aisles where I came across more than a few things, which is often not the case. Most of the time I lament not having the selection of the places near me in Salt Lake, but here, there was no such thoughts. I was far too busy being impressed. Anyone in the area that has access to this store is quite fortunate to have it. read more

All this for $4.33 on 99 cent day, made to order and served with a smile by head cook Amber! So glad I accidentally got locked out this morning. The place is empty, so im calling this a best kept secret. Landed here after McDonald's and coffee shops had only drive throughs open. Also, healthy pasts on sale for $1! What a deal! HyVee is not cheap, but it can work for people who like deals. read more

I cannot say enough nice things about Hy-Vee's staff. I recently threw a bridal shower for my daughter. The Hy-Vee bakery did the cupcakes, and the floral department did a beautiful red roses arrangement and also blew up balloons that I purchased elsewhere. The cupcakes- wow- were of course delicious- and GORGEOUS- just what I ordered- I got a variety with pink and white frosting- and I also dropped off specific cupcake toppers that the bakery staff said they would put on the cupcakes for me. The cupcakes were almost too pretty to eat. They loaded them in an easy-to-carry box, that fit the cupcakes perfectly. Brande from the floral department and her team are AMAZING. I am sure she's happy the shower is over because I made multiple trips to Hy-Vee to talk to her about the party- and what I needed or would like (I even showed her pictures). She assured me that she would take care of everything- and make my daughter's special day just how we want it. BUT she did sooo much more. She added something special to the roses arrangement (without charging me extra) and she blew up so many balloons (even some confetti balloons- that are difficult to actually blow up and make them look like the "picture" but she did!)- she even gave me suggestions on how I could arrange them at the party (the word BRIDE hanging with a string- she showed me how to string the letters together), 2 balloon bouquets on the floor by the cupcake and gift tables. She gave me sticky tabs to help with some decorative curtains that were in this party kit I purchased- which worked AMAZING- Thank you BRANDE. She even had the balloons bagged so it was easy to transport them. She asked her colleague to help me out to the car. She was the sweetest young girl. We were asked by another Hy-Vee employee if we needed help on the way out (We kindly declined the offer, we had it covered). She even buckled in the roses to secure them. I was so thrilled, relieved, and beyond happy with how everything turned out and so surprised with how unbelievably friendly everyone was- it meant the world to me, as planning this party was very stressful. I gave the young girl a hug goodbye- and thanked her so much for all her help. I love you Hy-Vee and all your friendly staff/smile in every aisle. read more

I am not usually the type to complain but last Thursday I received the worst customer service experience at the bakery at crossroads. I had come in to buy some cupcakes for a friends birthday party. I had a coworker who bought some amazing cupcakes for me for my birthday so I decided to get them for my friend's party. I had asked her where she got them and she told me she got them from crossroads hyvee. So I went up to the bakery counter and started looking at the cupcakes. I didn't see the cupcakes she had bought and asked if they possibly had some in the back. I specifically asked for strawberry and carrot as I saw it mentioned the carrot on display. the young girl working there told me they did not have any, and i said okay and continued looking at what they had. She then asked in a condescending tone, "have you bought them here before?" I responded that I had a coworker who said that she did. She then said "well that's weird because we've never sold them here." I wasn't sure how to reply so I just said okay thanks anyway, which was met with a "yep." After I turned around, I noticed that there were some cupcakes on display. I took a quick look and noticed right away that there were cupcakes on the display that had the strawberry and carrot cupcakes I had been searching for. I found it disappointing that instead of pointing me to the display to begin with, she had instead decided to be rude and condescending. There really was no need for it. read more

Customer service is terrible. Put limits on what can be purchased at the register. No signage as to limits in the aisle, but say there is signage up. Wont go look though. Say things are advertised, in which they are not. False advertising on website, and sale items. Food is either extremely overpriced, or gone because of a sale that wasn't advertised. This place is a complete joke. Management is rude, and seem ignorant as to how to run a business. 20year customer weekly, and will never go back. Their food will rot before I will buy any of it again. read more
