There's not much Asian markets around Charlottesville, I stumbled upon this one. There's another Asian market down the road but I wanted to see what's here. It's decent size, has your basic Asian condiment, sauce, frozen food etc. It's mainly frozen & packaged items here with some fresh produce. Customer service is good. Parking is limited. I have recently went to Asian Market and I have noticed some differences compared to prior visits: It was much more brighter inside. THERE WERE AN ABUNDANCE OF PRODUCE!! Also, there is new ownership and they were very nice to greet me when I entered the store and asked if there was any certain thing I was looking for in order to help me. I noticed that when there wasn't the old nice Chinese man playing his erhu at the cash register. Some of my favorite things about this shop are the variety of condiments. They have most things that bigger Asian grocery stores from big cities have. I have been able to go into this store to find certain ingredients that I could not previously find at the competing store. I have been able to cook Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai (especially Thai), Indonesian, and now, Burmese food!! Bottom line: I really like how bright this place has gotten, but love that the produce is abundance and they said they will be doing that with fruits as well! This has been one of my go-to grocery stores ever since moving to Charlottesville two years ago. I will always recommend this place! read more

Unfortunately, there aren't many options for Asian supermarkets and this may be your best option around the area. The store is small and it's located in a plaza with limited parking. They have many options from rice to veggies to frozen goodies. The store looked a bit empty to me but there were many more options than the supermarket not far away from here and the prices were more competitive. They do not have any fresh fish but do have a variety of veggies. Overall, it may have enough to satisfy whatever you need to buy. read more

Amazing store, extremely helpful and kind staff as well. I was making chicken rendang and one of the workers noticed the ingredients I had found so far and took me to the back section with the freezers that had literally all the other ingredients I was looking for! First---compliments to the owner and manager(s) for shutting down, labelling products shelves, and most importantly, reopening in a reconfigured fashion so that we can resume shopping safely. For now, we enter through the back, where a makeshift checkout station has been created. Masks mandatory-- one provided you for a dollar if you came without one, and disposable gloves provided free-- and required of every shopper. Safety for them and us. It's a model for all grocery shopping in town. I fear it's too late to hope that larger shops will mimic this, as they would so already. At least here, progressive thinking in practice and conforming to logical epidemiological practice-- thank you So what about the food? Asian cooks, it's here and/or C'ville Oriental. I prefer this shop for the variety of tinned and jarred sauces, fresh bean sprouts, varieties of tofu, less typical green produce, from bitter melon to about 7 different versions of cabbage and bok choy. You get the idea. If you are looking for a dragonfruit in Cville, it'll be here. If you want more, it's going be a long drive to the mammoth Lotte or H-Marts in Fairfax (where you can find 6 different types of mango alone...) I'm a regular here. read more

I stumbled across this place in my search for Mirin, an essential ingredient for my beef teriyaki recipe. First of all, I like the location of this Asian grocery store. Although parking spaces are limited, I gave it an extra star for the convenient location- close to my house and close to Barracks Shopping Center. Asian Market has a lot of products (I did find Mirin and I also found a seaweed/dried fish rice seasoning that I love), but the store itself needs some more work in the organization. It's hard to find what I'm looking for and the shelves themselves are a little messy. Some of the prepackaged food looked a little stale and dusty and I swore I saw a bug in one of them. I haven't come back since that one time I went to get Mirin. Would have rated it lower, but I did manage to get what I needed without too much of a hassle. read more

I can't tell if this store has a decent selection, because (1) it's so dark and (2) it's so unorganized. What a mess! I would NEVER buy anything fresh here, because it just looks too dirty! It's the only Asian grocery I know of in Charlottesville, so it's the one that gets my business for pre-packaged foods. Few parking spaces. I hate to give them a 2-star rating, but I'd really like to see them clean the place up a bit and make things arranged more attractively. read more

This is my go to place for my Asian groceries. I've been going here since I moved to Charlottesville back in 2006. Fresh produce and product come in from DC every Thursday evening so if you want the freshest be there then! No, it's not HT or Kroger on being well lit and organized but the owner and his family are really nice and have gotten special items for me when I have requested it. Located directly off of 29 and across from the Bodo's Bagels before the exit for 250, this place can be easily overlooked. However, in a stitch for specific ingredients I decided to make it a destination. Upon entering, I noticed that the store was a bit dingy feeling due to the low lighting and dark aisles. It's a smaller store in relation to the second asian grocery down the street but it had a decent selection of foundational items such as soy sauce, sriracha, sauce packets, dried noodles, and a decent array of frozen foods like dumplings, etc. While the prices were reasonable, I was extremely hesitant to purchase any produce. The produce was kept in the back of the store and was surrounded by miscellaneous clutter and items. I couldn't tell how long things had been stored back there nor did I want to gamble on the freshness of the food. However, the selection of dried items, spices, sauces, and noodles, seemed reasonably kept toward the center/front of the store. If you need staple items and don't mind the aforementioned details and are adventurous, I'd say this place is an interesting stop. Just be aware that parking is limited and that the business beside this one will tow your vehicle if you park there. read more

Stopped by the area on a work trip and randomly found this place while driving around. I was initially turned off by the basic exterior looks but I was pleasantly surprised by how decent it was inside. It has a lot of the inventory that I was expecting and the inside was surprisingly big and well stocked. read more

pros: For a small space, this store is stocked full. The noodles! The frozen dumplings! Although...I must add, the price of dumplings has grown to 3.99$/bag now. Sorry, cassie. cons: It's questionable how fresh the produce in the back is. It's prob better to stick to the frozen, canned, and prepackaged foods. A word of warning though: Some of the food items are unmarked price-wise. I'm not sure how the cashiers ring up these items, but if you're uneasy about arbitrarily assigned prices, ask them about it beforehand. overall: If you haven't yet, give this place a chance. It's the number two asian grocery store in the area. The C-ville Oriental Market down 29 is MUCH BETTER. This place had moldy tofu puffs and the organization is kinda odd. I give it 3 stars just because it serves a need and the need for Salon-pas, green tea pumpkin seeds, and large quantities of tofu is great. They need to have a food network makeover. They had what we needed, but man the guy working at the cash register (I assume the owner) was quite grumpy.

The staff are very friendly and they have a great selection of vegetables and fruits. I can find many things that I need for Chinese recipes plus the also have Pocky, one of my most favorite Asian snacks. read more

I visit Asian Market every weekend. The store is older, so it is a bit grungy, but the produce comes in every Friday and Saturday, and I think items move enough that I have never caught out-of-date items. You can find exotic fruit like Dragonfruit ($3.99 at Whole Foods last week and around $3.00 here) and persimmons. Sometimes the produce looks a bit worn out, but that means they have not restocked yet. Moreover, I have made special requests, and they have had no trouble accommodating me. It is a family-run business. The man who usually controls the cash register has little knowledge of English (but is getting better); however, I always love it when he is playing music as I enter the store. read more

I don't know why the folks below are complaining about the produce, because the Asian Market is my go-to place for fresh Chinese broccoli, yuca, mango, et al. I fill up a whole bag with fresh veggies for $15. OK, so it's a little crowded and needs new carpet, but for me (admittedly, an Asian food dilettante), it's great for staples like rice, coconut milk, curry pastes, soy, oyster and fish sauces, frozen dumplings, noodles, etc. And I don't have to fight traffic because it's not as far up 29 North as the other store.
