This review will be for one of their donuts and one of their subs. I wanted food so decided to try a sub from the deli department. I went with their whole sub deal where you get a whole sub for $8.49 which came to $9.16 after tax. On my sub I got turkey, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, Mayo and salt and pepper on whole wheat bread. This thing was MASSIVE. The picture I posted is only half of the sub. I had been wanting turkey all day and the taste did not disappoint. Ate half then had the other half the next day. For a sweet treat I went for one of their donuts. I got the chocolate cake donut with a thick chocolate glaze. Or maybe it was a chocolate sauce? Not sure. So the donut itself was a bit dry. Needed some milk which I didn't have but oh well. The chocolate topping was delicious. I ate the dry bottom part first so that I could taste more of the topping which worked out beautifully. Because the donut was kinda dense, I decided to only eat half cause I didn't wanna feel so heavy. Half was enough tho and I ate the other half the next day. I would 100% order more subs from there. They're delicious, HUGE and you get what you pay for. The donut.....I'd probably try a different flavor. read more

This place has gone downhill. It's a tragic example of what happens when companies put profit over people. Hugely understaffed, and using the most dehumanizing and insulting system for self checkout. Better not hope their shoddy scales get confused, or you get to watch a video of you bagging your stuff with an attendant staring over your shoulder for 15 seconds, after waiting 5 minutes for him to notice you can't check out. And no option to have an attendant help check you out instead. If you ask, they'll treat you like a child for asking, rather than just say yes or no. They admittedly have a good selection, but save your wallet and your dignity, and shop at Kroger or Food Lion instead. read more

Why were all the cashiers so unpleasant and unhelpful today? First there was an enormous line for the few checkouts - which I've experienced before. Then, when I returned, the first worker at checkout #1 was too busy with his phone to even look up to help. When I asked if we could checkout, he said he was the bagger not the cashier. Ok, and, then . . . ? So, he directed us to unpleasant Courtney at no. 3 who directed us to even more unpleasant Nyoman at no. 4. Can't anyone say "hello" or even respond to a "thank you". Harris Teeter is a pretty good grocery and I'm glad they have a starbucks here. Sometimes they have really nice deals on my favorite items. I feel like there's never enough registers open and checkout takes a long time. I always opt for self checkout but it's a pain. read more

Went shopping at the Emmet Street store on a a Thursday evening around 8:30. Had a lot of groceries to get because I had family coming to visit for a week. My cart was very full and had several heavy items in it, such as cases of soft drinks. When I finally got to the checkout, there were NO CASHIERS ANYWHERE. All of the registers were closed. The only option was self-checkout, which would be impossible to use with all that food and heavy items. Harris Teeter should be ashamed of themselves for trying to save a buck by having no cashiers on duty in the evening like that. They don't close until 11:00 pm, so it was nowhere near closing time. I got so disgusted that I simply abandoned my cart and went home. Had to get my groceries at another store. Also of note: the restroom was disgraceful; very dirty and items needed repair. Only one of the two bathrooms was available; one of them had a sign on the door saying "out of order." There were several people waiting in line to use the one bathroom. An employee said it had been out of order since early afternoon. I won't be returning to this store. read more

I always say there are two types of people: those who like grocery shopping and those who don't. You'll find me nestled comfortably into the first camp. Harris Teeter is a grocery store that I've found causes serious debate. Some love it, others hate it. Really I think those that disapprove have unfairly judged it. Some think the prices are higher than other stores like Kroger, etc, and that it is a snootier grocery store. But after having lived in multiple locations where HT was my closest shop, I have been made to wander the aisles hundreds of times, and, being a bargain shopper, I've found that great deals and lower daily prices are the norm around the Teets. Harris Teeter has a larger and lower-priced selection of store-brand organics, and they seem to be continually adding new organic products to their shelves all the time. Compared to the store-brand organics at the other main grocery stores in Charlottesville: Wegmans or Kroger, I've found Harris Teeter to be cheaper and more diverse. The produce section is large and often better-priced than Kroger's, while maybe not as diverse as Wegman's, better organized in my opinion. Harris Teeter is a large store, (not as massive as Wegman's), so they can carry a large selection of everything really, and if I need to do a full grocery shop in one location (usually I get certain things at different places, if I'm not in a rush) I find that Harris Teeter is the best place for me to do it and come away with everything I want, at a decent price. This Harris Teeter is massive - it has essentially everything you could possibly think of in a grocery store in a floorspace appropriate to that stock. It is part of Barracks Road Shopping Center and is open 24 hours a day, a real distinction for a store so large and something one is grateful for when one has a late night or early morning need for, well, anything. It is placed in quick driving and easy walking distance of UVA North Grounds with ample sidewalks and road connections, making it a very good spot for those who live in the area and a good bit closer than the Kroger on the opposite side of Barracks Road Shopping Center. I always felt its parking lot space is particularly well-positioned too as while there are stores around it nonetheless the floorspace this Harris Teeter takes makes it so it has extremely ample spaces/lots available as compared to some of the more densely packed Barracks Road Shopping Center shops. Otherwise, it has Harris Teeter-level pricing and ain't a discount grocery store. The sushi at this one also felt a bit lacking but their prepared foods are alright. They have a pretty good Starbucks location, with tables, in the grocery store as well. read more

All the reasons I like My Harris Teeter, First off Mehgan the Omelette and Hot Bar Chef. Her omelets are cooked to perfection​ using a technique I'm going to be trying at home. Also since she cooks stuff for the hot bar, and I hope she reads this review​, the tofu and veggie options are also on point. Cathy on Thursday Nights makes​ the most amazing Prime Rib dinner that you could dream of, for 10 bucks you get 10 oz of prime rib and two sides, this week it was veggies and mashed potatoes, I was very impressed. Don, the manager of the store is also a sweetheart, Since Harris Teeter has the option to order food items in advanced, I have no problem ordering a cheese plate ahead of time for a party, they typically sport a cheddar, a smoked gouda, and a baby swiss with a pile of grapes on top, perfect for your next foodie event. The Harris Teeter store's manager in Barracks Road Shopping Center in Charlottesville, VA, is ignorant of--and has posted no sign indicating--his own company's COVID-19 policy of special hours for seniors (60+) and "vulnerable populations," Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 am. Here is the policy as stated on HT's website (https://www.harristeeter.com/harris-teeter-response-to-covid-19): "A Message from Harris Teeter About the Coronavirus - We're Here for Our Shoppers & Communities Senior Shopping: Effective Monday, March 30, Harris Teeter is now designating TWO hours every Monday and Thursday morning from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. as senior shopping hours for shoppers aged 60 and over. We will also have more fresh offerings available." In small print, the policy says that members of vulnerable populations can shop during these hours, too. The manager just told me that he thought the policy was from 6 to 7 am on Mondays and Thursdays. And when I asked why there was no sign on the door indicating these hours, he said, "They must have taken it down." I saw many seniors much older than I making their way slowly around the store. I am sure they really count on those few hours for undisturbed shopping. This morning before 8 am there were young people in the store, too. Now that U. Va. students have returned, they (and other community members) must be reminded of the policy through clear, large signage on the entrance. read more

Love Harris Teeter in the Barracks Road Shopping Center. They carry a fair share of organic products that I do not find at other stores. They rarely move things around so it makes shopping easier from week to week. But if you can't find something and ask, someone will lead you straight to the item. They provide a senior discount on Thursdays. Overall, the store is clean and well organized. The fish selection is the nicest I find in the county and reasonably priced. They carry pasture-raised beef, chicken and dairy products. They have great sales on organic coffee. But best of all and the reason I shop there instead of a place like Wegman's, that I live closer to, is the consistently sweet staff at HT. Cathy, Debra, Ty, Ashleigh. Always helpful and kind, they feel like family. And the produce is the best in the area. I've shopped elsewhere, but there is magic in the produce department. I don't know why, but the fruits and vegetables are fresher and last longer than any other store produce in my experience. And I'm picky! In addition, David, the produce manager, will bend over backwards to help you find what you need. He's amazing, always ready to assist. I've shopped at HT for 33 years, 24 of those this location. I am generally a fan of Harris Teeter grocery stores. The produce is reliably fresh, and they have a wide variety of products to choose from. My complaint is that the prices, particularly for the Charlottesville area, are a little high. I think the meat in particular is overpriced. You can mitigate some of this price difference by getting a VIC card, the Harris Teeter customer rewards program. The discounts are decent- last year, I saved about $200 by using one regularly. This branch is well managed. The aisles are clean and well organized. The staff is friendly, efficient, and helpful. Sometimes, especially on Mondays, the shelves can get a little bare, but the people who work here are more than willing to pull something out of the back for you. I also like this location because it has a (recently renovated) Starbucks! Overall, this Harris Teeter is a good place to do your weekly shopping, even if it can be a little expensive. read more

This is just your typical Harris Teeter location, but I love the work they do to reach out for the community. The UVA student discount is a great way to save on groceries, and the annual 20% "College Night" is a really great program to get people to come in and shop. The hot bar has an impressive selection and is always stocked, and the pizzas are much more affordable than nearby delivery or takeout. While yes, Harris Teeter is a grocery store... This review primarily deals with their sandwiches and their pub area. We had a great conversation with our sandwich maker about everything music. We started with Cardi B and went to Garth Brooks. We laughed the entire time. I had a cheesesteak ($3.99 for a foot long... Sign me up!). The bread was toasted well, steak was flavorful and the veggies were fresh. The great thing about this Harris Teeter is the bar. We took our sandwiches to the bar for a cold beer. Cathy served us and couldn't have been nicer. We even pulled out the TV Guide she had sent to the store and gave us the remote for the TV. I would have thought I was at home if I would have been in on the couch. They have a modest selection of beer, but plenty of locals. 3 Notch'd, Devils, Williamsburg Aleworks, and Bold Rock Cider to name a few. Pints were only $4. After talking with Cathy, we found out we lived less than 5 minutes from each other in NoVa, years ago. Small world! Anyway, great customer service can put a place over the top... Today was training day for checkout clerks. Lines were very long and barely moved. Finally, I diverted to self checkout which is often longer than regular. I was going well until a meat item didn't have a price code. The staff said I should go back to the meat counter to get a price and I thought, why don't they run back so I don't have to pick up the things I had already checked out. After a couple of times shopping here, it has really grown on me. I enjoy the atmosphere, the place is very clean, and the food is fresh. But the biggest downfall is the customer service. Every time I have went to eat at the daily meal station or sub station, there would be no one around to serve me. I just awkwardly stand there hoping someone will come and help me order. The last time I was there, two employees were talking - one with her back towards the omelet station and the other with cleaning supplies. While I don't mind if employees talk, especially if no one is around, the girl who was facing my direction said nothing and continued talking to her friend. I ended up walking away and not getting anything at the omelet station. Another time, I waited for about 10-13 minutes at the sub station where employees by the deli saw me, but failed to acknowledge my presence. Standing there for about 5 minutes, the nice man at the sushi station asked me if I was waiting. I said yes - as he told the deli girl to come over and help me. She said that she'd be with me in a moment, and about 5 minutes later she came over. While I understand that employees need to finish their task, 1-2 minutes can seem very long to a customer, especially if the station is not busy. Maybe this is a consequence of being short staffed, but I think that Harris Teeter should instill more customer service practice and awareness in their employees. Making a customer wait more than 5 minutes to start their order is kind of unacceptable (specifically when you are the only customer insight). In general, I really do enjoy shopping here, but given there are so many grocery store options around Charlottesville - Harris Teeter needs to step up their customer service game Also, there are sometimes markdown items around the store but these sales have not been put into the system. There was a buy one get one free of Airheads bubblegum I tried to purchase, but the price never came off. This has happened a couple times. So if you want to ensure that you will get a sale, pick up the item with a yellow VIC sign. Don't rely on other signs because the computer has never given me that discount. The most important thing to know about this place is that every day they have a 6" sub with all the toppings for just $2.50. $2.50!!! I haven't been there in a few months so it might have gone up a bit. But the point is, cheap sub specials. The deli is excellent. You absolutely must try the special hoagie dressing on every single sandwich. Otherwise, this place is too expensive. Go to Giant and save 20 bucks a week easy for the same quality. The only other thing Teeter has got over the Seminole Giant is the seafood section. But the Pantops Giant wins in that area too. read more

The choice for most UVA students is between Harris Teeter and Kroger, both located in the Barracks Rd Shopping Center. Although Harris Teeter is a little more expensive, I find that this is the where I buy my groceries. Food: The fruits, vegetables, meat and seafood counters are fresher and better quality. The lunch and ready-made food items are pretty good. Sushi isn't bad for grocery store pick up, I like that they have brown rice. Sandwiches and salad bar are great and cheap. I stay away from the soup, which has ridiculously high sodium and the hot entrees. Ambience: The store feels warm and welcoming, contrast to Kroger which feels... like a blighted neighborhood. Service: The staff are friendly and receptive in contrast to Kroger where the staff look dejected and uninterested. I find myself dreading going to Kroger because of the need to interact with the people there. On the downside, as noted, things can be a bit more expensive. Additionally, they do not stock unsalted peanuts. That is the one item I have to go to Kroger to get. Harris Teeter management, please correct this. read more

I really like this Harris Teeter - despite the construction and general torn-up-ness in there right now, I can find everything I am looking for and for a reasonable price with the VIC card. True, if you aren't willing to spend an extra minute or use coupons it is more expensive than some other local grocers, but if you're thrifty like me... =) Really though. The only store in the area that I've seen thus far that carries the Silk Organic Soy Milk - my hubs' favorite - and they have EVERY flavor of Chobani Greek Yogurt - which is my favorite. I liked this store so much I bought the stock (NYSE: RDK) This place makes Whole Foods look like Winn Dixie (They open Winn Dixie's dirty) The meats and cheeses dept is over the top and they give free samples all the time. They have many hard to find specialty items and quality is paramount. People are friendly and this is "My Favorite Grocery Store Period!" The Harris Teeter at Barracks Road was the first thing I saw when I first visited UVA going into my first year there. It's a quite a landmark, signaling your grand entrance onto UVA's "Grounds." This was in 2000, before Harris Teeter had arrived in Northern Virginia, where I'm from. I was reluctant to accept this new "trendy" grocery store, so green next to my familiar red Safeway. At the beginning, I hated going to Harris Teeter. As I often told people, I felt like a hedgehog burrowing around on the forest floor. I'm not sure what made me feel like that, but maybe it was the green and brown interior. The air seemed cool but heavy at the same time. Over time, however, I came to love my Barracks Road Harris Teeter. HT popped up in a couple locations in Arlington, and I got used to it. The produce is always fresh, they give out lots of free samples of cheeses and breads, and they have a fair selection of gourmet-ish foods. The staff is friendly (almost too friendly sometimes). They are open 24 hours a day, and what college student doesn't appreciate that? I loved the salad bar and sushi bar for a quick last-minute lunch or dinner. I bought a couple of their big canvas tote bags so as not to waste plastic bags. I clung to my handy Vic card and even earned enough points for some free luggage once, which is surprisingly high quality. I won some patio furniture too once, but I decided not to cash in on that one. I became a total Harris Teeter convert, and sometimes I see photos of the store interior (some friends on Facebook, for whatever reason, have taken photos of themselves while grocery shopping), and I actually miss it. I actually miss a grocery store! Harris Teeter was such a central part of my life during my 7 years in Charlottesville. Now I wish California would trade up its Safeways for Harris Teeters. Harris Teeter has been my store in Charlottesville for many years now and they generally do a good job thus my patronage. But three times in a row now I have ordered a product for delivery during this Covid-19 period the day of a new ad and my primary meat item each time is unavailable. It's not like it's Clorox wipes for example that they don't even put it on their ad. When this happens THREE times in a row I'm starting to become suspicious. Obviously shortages do exist but this is becoming standard practice. This doesn't seem to be the case for meat items at other stores. Please be aware of this IF you decide to order meat items. I just went to Harris Teeter today for the first time in a while. Now I remember why I don't go much. First of all the overpowering stench of seafood when I first walked in was not a good indication of what's going on back in their seafood department? Secondly, I happened to be on this part of town and it was not buying very many items, but I still felt ripped off when I left! How can they charge so much for so many of the same items I can get it other grocery stores for less? Is it because they cater to the students and feel they can afford more? Students usually can't afford more but I guess there are some that are from more well-to-do family's and can. Don't forget there are those of us that live here year around! I would like to be able to shop at Harris Teeter's because I do like some of their items. It's just not realistic if you're going to have to pay at least 25 to 50% more on so many items! Finally, the most irritating thing that I would not have thought Harris Teeter would do, is to sell ice cream that has melted and refrozen! If I'm going to splurge on Häagen-Dazs or Ben & Jerry's,I certainly don't want to get it home and open it up to find it has ice crystals through it from melting and refreezing!!! Grrrrrrrr! And before you say it.... NO, this is not the first time with the ice cream situation at Harris Teeter! However, I was on a meal plan and a budget, so I usually went to the cheaper alternatives a few doors down the street. But.....the quality overall of food here is better...such as produce and such.
