Was looking for a place to buy my favorite chocolate bark made my cville candy company and stumbled across Blue Ridge Country Store which happens to be 0.2 miles from my office! Saw other great reviews about the salad bar and decided to stop in. Was greeted by the cashier and took a lap around the store. Decided to go with a salad for lunch. LOTS of options from greens and fixins to pasta and other little salads. A lot of dressing options but I was not a fan of their ranch personally. I love this place! I probably get a salad here 3X a week. First and most foremost they have a KILLER salad bar. Endless amounts of toppings, everything is fresh, protein options, grain options, things you wouldn't even think about normally putting on a salad, everything! They also have daily food specials, I know Wednesday's are tuna, Thursday's are burritos, they have soups, fresh baked goods, pre-made sandwiches, coffee. Basically if you want/need it they have it. The store itself is very charming and a time warp when you walk in, with its hardwood, country decorations, and massive selection of old candy. easily my lunch time go to. the best salads downtown, yummy wraps, and always a daily surprise with hot food! haven't had anything bad here. i stop in almost every afternoon for a cookie- the heath bar is my favorite. they also sell nightingale ice cream sandwiches. Incredible gem. Humbly, this store offers the best salad bar in Charlottesville, local baked goods, healthy wraps and fresh cookies. Whether you work downtown or are just passing through this is a gem. If you need seating you can walk 30 seconds to the Pavilion for a shaded table. Heard they had good soups. Went in on a cold day after a haircut, thinking soup would be great. The soup is prepackaged (but in a to go cup) under heat lamps. They clearly make it themselves. I choose corn chowder. 5+ for a large serving container. The broth was thin, I expect chowder to have a thicker base. Tasty enough, with chunks of tasty fresh potatoes. But the corn was out of a can. And so much of it, it was just like eating canned corn. So disappointing. If you are going to make fresh homemade corn chowder, at LEAST cheat and make it with creamed corn. For the price they charged, it should be made with fresh corn. Not in season? Don't make it at all. Stick to seasonal soups. read more

I want to like this store, I really do. But I have some serious concerns about food safety here. On several different occasions I have bought perishable items (e.g. milk, yogurt, etc.) only to realize after I open it that it's expired. Like, growing mold expired (and weeks older than the expiration date listed on the container). I've also bought fruit cups only to discover mold on the fruit. The salad bar is good and I love the cookies from the case. But I don't eat here as often as I would like because I have some strong reservations about the safety of the perishable items--including all of the items in the salad bar. My advice is to check the expiration date on all refrigerated items before purchasing and be very careful when selecting deli items that require refrigeration. read more

Such a cute store. I walked inside when I saw jam being displayed in the window:) They have a salad bar and other food options to choose from. Different kinds of chocolates I haven't seen before and a fruit section from a local farm. The feeling I had was a small farmers market was taking place in this country store. They even had baguettes and cheese! That won my heart. I decided upon an orange and went to pay 68 cents for it. Next time I will spend more time in here as I had only a few minutes to spare! read more

I walked by this place for four years before ever going in, I'm glad I finally did. I just think the staff is really friendly and cool and they have reasonable prices for their pastries and salad bar. I can't really afford to eat out but if I'm going to buy lunch I've been going there. read more

BRCS has the tastiest to-go wraps you will find in this town. The customer service is fantastic. They work hard to please their customers. There is an awesome selection of beverages. There is no better place to stop on the mall than this shop. They support other local businesses. Best of all, it is affordable. I really feel that the owners keep the prices reasonable even when they don't have to. All of this gets me stopping by regularly. read more

This is a convenient little store on Main Street that offers a nice looking salad bar, drinks and snacks. They also have baked goods which, really, why else was I in there? Not many people seem to know about this store, but it has one of the best (probably the best) salad bars on the mall. You just walk to the back, make your own and pay for it at the front counter. And if you don't want to make your own, they have a great variety of already packaged grain-based or lentil-based salads for just $1.99. The store is cute and full of interesting, local food items. The soups and wraps are also worth trying. read more

Great ingredients for the salad bar (with some fresh made lentils, quinoa, etc). Baked cookies are always out in front, and there are great grabs for a quick lunch like empanadas and soups. The coffee is usually pretty tasty. Just a solid place if you're in a hurry or want to sit in a rocking chair and shoot the breeze. read more

Great family-run store with an incredible salad bar, the best in all of Charlottesville if not all of Central Virginia. They also have healthy sandwiches and other home-made delights. This place is such a hidden gem on the downtown mall, I had no idea it was here until just recently. Wish I had discovered it sooner as the salad bar is amazing and they offer a lot of inexpensive snacks, coffee, baked goods, and basic groceries. But really, the salad bar is exceptional. Everything is clearly labeled and the ingredients are listed so it's helpful if you have dietary restrictions and want to know exactly what is in each offering. There are standard salad ingredients and then a mix of cold grain, bean, and pasta salads, lots of fruit, nuts, cheeses, and croutons to round things out. There are at least 10 types of dressing as well and really the only bad thing is that you may end up spending $11 on your salad because you want to try a bit of everything! read more

I come in for the salad bar a lot because it is convenient to my office, but (sadly) I may have to turn my sights elsewhere in the future. Twice now, I have purchased items from the refrigerator case only to get back to the office and realize that they are well past (2+ weeks) the expire date. The first time it was bottled iced tea that was over a month past the date; this time it is yogurt. Scary! Sure, I can be more careful about checking dates on packaged stuff, but now I'm questioning the food safety of the salad bar, baked goods, and dried fruit/nut bins. I can't check the dates on those. After wanting a snack after playing with the kids at the Discovery Museum, a young employee mentioned some ice cream shops and this cute little country store to get inexpensive, homemade cookies. Of course the kids picked colored sugar cookies in the shapes of horses and elephants, but we sprung for the Harvest cookie which is to die for! Coconut, craisins, whole wheat = touchy-feely wholesome goodness! Anybody got the recipe? :) read more
