Opened in 2008, this is family owned and the young wife of the husband wife duo who has been working at the order counter on our couple of trips in is always so sweet and cheerful with all customers, greeting what seems to be regulars for take out as if old friends. She also speaks Chinese to whomever is doing the cooking in the kitchen behind her that diners can't see into through the high open widow space into it but one can hear the sounds of cooking and Chinese being spoken. In that exchange it is also friendly and maybe even familial. In my book it is the delightful attitude that adds the extra star to rating. And as much as local people are boo-hooing about the closure in this calendar year (2025) of a number of long time Chinese food restaurants in the greater Treasure Valley, from Middleton to Nampa to Garden City and Boise, it seems they want to be super critical of the true little mom-n-pop places like this. Just saying. THE FOOD: This Cantonese - Mandarin menu is structured to appeal to American palates for diners who think Orange Chicken or General Tsao's are real things. That isn't my husband and me given we have been able to enjoy some extraordinary Chinese cuisine via Chinatowns in NYC and SF when we lived there and in Portland (OR) too when there was briefly a restaurant with Xinjiang dishes. But even for us there are things here to appreciate (although, as with all Chinese food places where we do not know the owners personally, we focus on vegetarian options) and if one is looking for Chinese food to take away, one can do a lot worse than this. Dishes (rice included) are generously sized and are in the $12 - 14 range. Noodle dishes maybe around $12. THE SPACE & SEATING: If you are planning to go for the first time, you need to know the space is very small, a handful of booths split between both sides of the room, and a round table in the middle. Also, because it is small, they are going to occasionally have things like bags of rice and other supplies stacked on the floor outside the kitchen. For that reason I am unable to report if the loo is unisex or not because I couldn't get to it on the only eat-in visit because of the supplies that had just been delivered and stacked in the way. And on that note, in the vein of everything being connected to everything else, the owner and delivery driver had a delightful conversation as if they were old friends through this connection of supplier and owner. Our preference here is take-out and we note there seems to be a brisk business for them in that. PARKING: This is a sort of old time Western town themed strip mall in Star (which at one time may have been thought of as that kind of town but which has been gentrified of late by out of state - read California homebuyers) and it has a parking lot. ACCESSIBILITY: ADA parking in the lot. The round table seating might work for a wheelchair user but I didn't look at it closely. Other than that, booth seating. The food is ok but the kitchen can be seen on the way to the bathroom. I will never go back based on seeing both the kitchen and bathroom. It really needs a health code violation based on what my friend and I saw. This is our favorite place right now. Foods hot and delicious however twice when we've been and ordered the woman has to make the statement, that's a lot of food. I have driven by this place a handful of times and today was the day I decided I needed to check it out. Chinese food, good Chinese food is hard to find in the valley. Maybe cause I grew up in the industry and I lived in Chinatown but I have yet to find a Chinese restaurant in this area that completely blows my socks off. So, coming here I was going to be optimistic. Walking in, this venue is tiny. There are a handful of tables. There's back stock of boxes in the windows of the restaurant. It's pretty congested for a tiny dining area. We were instantly greeted by the sweet little girl that was working, she had to be in her teens. She reminded me of being stuck at my family's restaurant working in the summer. She told us to pick out a table so my daughter and I sat at a booth. As usual, I checked out the online menu. My daughter took a minute to breeze over the menu. We figured out what we wanted and got orders squared away. I got pork and seeds with hot and sour soup. My daughter got the Mongolian beef dinner combo. My pork and seeds came out first. I appreciate how thick and big the slices were. The hot mustard was extra hot today, it burned so good, it did a great job cursing clearing out my nasal passages. My hot and sour soup came out shortly. My bowl is pipping hot! I have had piping hot but this bowl was out of the wok hot. I took my first bite and realized my soup was made to order cause I burned my mouth on that first bite. It wasn't sitting in a heated pot ready to be served, it was fresh! The soup was thick and it had nice ribbons of egg. There were also chunks of tofu, bamboo and chicken. It was very flavorful with a little kick. Honestly, if it just had a few more bamboo shoots and a hint more vinegar, it would have been perfect! But for my first time, it was pretty tasty! The only thing I tried off my daughter's plate was the egg roll. It was a thick egg roll with a good amount of filling in the middle. I appreciate how big the egg roll was. It's been embarrassing eating egg rolls in the area and the egg rolls are so skinny. There was substance to this egg roll! I love pairing the egg roll with the sweet and sour sauce. Sweet and savory is my favorite combo. This joint isn't the prettiest or the neatest. It's your basic mom and pop shop. But if you're looking for decent Chinese food in the Star area, Asian Wok is your joint. They are about a 20 minute drive from my place and I'm happy to drive it. Everything closer to me hasn't really made me want to go back but I'll head back to this joint. The little server was sweet and they push out decent food. Staff was very nice, personable and pleasant even with many pickup orders being placed on New Years Eve. We ate at the premises which is small and quaint. The appetizers were delicious, hot and crispy. Meal was delicious as well, nice light batter on chicken, sauce was complimentary not overwhelming. My wife and I recently moved to Star. This evening, we tried Asian Wok for the first time. Located just west of Plummer on the north side of the 44, it is just right next door to Sea Salt Ice Cream. We came on a Saturday night, and, though small inside, with mostly booths, there was only one other party eating. They seem to do a good take-out business. The decor is dated and in need of a facelift, if only paint. There were two women working the front. They were both mostly all business, no smiles, but toward the end, our server became a little warm and smiled. They have a nice dinner special, entree plus chow mein, pork fried rice, and egg roll, for $11.25. The portions are ample; you won't leave hungry. We waited a bit for a server, but then, once we ordered, our food was delivered pretty quickly. My wife had the Mongolian Beef and i got the Cashew Chicken. Hers had too many onions for her taste and mine had a lot of celery and carrots, which I didn't mind. We didn't think the dishes to be that flavorful. I liked the texture and tast of the chow mein, and the egg roll was good. We really wanted to like this restaurant, because it is so conveniently located to our home in Star. Unfortunately, this will not be our go-to restaurant for Chinese food. The search continues. Let me start out by saying we ABSOLUTELY HATE Cantonese Style Chinese Food (bland meat and vegetables with a thick syrupy sauce). We disliked our takeout entrées immensely. Don't bother, I called to ask what time they close, reply 9pm. I said great I'll be right over, I called from the car to place the order. Person said the kitchen closes at 8:30 so we can clean up. So glad I bookmarked this place a while ago, because when I was in the area, it reminded me to stop in and try it. I didn't get much, just a generous order of pork fried rice To Go, under $10. As a teenager I had a local place that served the best pork fried rice and I have never found a place that can match my old favorite. Asian Wok has done it! Of course, there are many places with good fried rice, but there is something about how I like it made. I like small pieces of meat and egg, not overwhelmed with veggies, and the dryness factor is key. It cannot be greasy or overly moist, fresh but to the perfect dryness texture. Found it here! The restaurant is on the smaller side and not luxurious, but clean. The lady owner is super cool and friendly and loves to see her customers happy. I paid with cash to save her the transaction fees and she was appreciative. My wife and I decided to try this place out after viewing this place from the road daily, and seeing some positive reviews. We have many tried other places, and so far, Ramen house in Nampa has been the best far. As far as this place, the food was a bit bland. If you notice the chicken in the picture, we both had ordered the mandarin chicken with fried rice. The chicken tasted like it was cooked after being freezer burnt for sometime with awful hard crusted greasy breading surrounding it. I asked why the breading appeared and tasted the way it did, and the owner (I think it was the owner) stated that they use heavy breading on the mandarin chicken but not on the other chicken like orange chicken and beef, in which they use lighter breading. Kinda odd for just this type of chicken to do it to. They should have just used some form of bread crumbs or panko. I really really wanted to eat this as I was a bit hungry, but it was hard to swallow and digest this after a few measly bites. We both had a few bites of it, and I have to admit that it was just not appetizing/edible to our liking. Unfortunate. I have had this dish MANY of times at many other places, and I have never had this type of greasy thick breading surrounded by what tasted like old freezer burnt chicken before. The fried rice was a bit dry and not really that flavorful. Needless to say, we probably won't be back. But.... At least I donated 45 bucks to this place for giving them a try. I was hoping that would at least take half off for this garbage, but they didn't bat an eye to ask if they could fix it or comp part of the meal. It was almost as bad as Middleton's Chinese spot. I went there for takeout today, November 1, 2024 at approximately 1:30 PM. The interior of this place is a dirty pit with boxes stored behind booths, etc. Dirty floors, etc. But I was there for takeout so I really didn't care. I ordered the Mongolian Beef. Brought it home and grease was leaking through the Styrofoam container and through the plastic bag it was in. Lucky I put it on the rubber mat in my truck rather than the seat. So my friends and I decided to meet for lunch in Star at the Asian Wok. It was an interesting experience. One of my friends is gluten free and the waitress, although trying to be very helpful, could not guarantee which dishes were gluten free. My friend ended up ordering fried rice and hoping for the best. I ordered the Singapore noodles. I'm still searching for a decent substitute to the Singapore Fried Noodles that the Twin Dragon used to serve. My lunch was alright but nothing special, although the portions were very generous. We tried this place because we want to support local. I was really hoping I would like it, but it was barely edible. The only saving grace was the fried rice, as it was pretty good. A little dry but otherwise had some flavor. I had fried shrimp and it had a very thick crust and was overcooked. The worst part was that as I was picking off the crust so I could eat the shrimp, I saw that it had not been deveined. That was the end of it for me. Chinese doesn't need many bells and whistles. We really love this place. It's never too busy which is a bonus. Had the pot stickers this trip. So good. They were a little cooked more than usual but we actually really loved them that way. Not burnt at all but the wonton skin wasn't really gummy which I liked. Nice flavor in the filling. I had the Mandarin Chicken for my entree. The crunchy texture on the fried chicken was amazing. Sauce wasn't overly sweet. Everything was hot and had clearly just came out of the pan. My husband had the spicy beef. Really good with the right amount of heat. Veggies were crisp tender. I love their chow mein. They are very welcoming and always take care of us. Scary sanitation practices. I wanted some soup as had a cold and usually Chinese clears me up. I went to Asian wok and started eating soup. It was great. I noticed it was remodeled and cleaner than last time I was there. I went to restroom to wash hands and was shocked. There in dirty hot room next to the water heater were 2 sheet pans of frozen egg rolls sitting thawing. I took a picture and notified health dept by email. I know they don't do anything--there are too many filthy places in Ada. But here's the picture. Think of the things they do that we can't see. Too bad--star needs good restaurants.
