I thought I would try the Aspen Dental in Ithaca because the organization is listed in my preferred Provider network for my dental insurance. I have been going to dentists for over 50 years and have always had a teeth cleaning and exam on my first visit, not so at Aspen. I have not received a bill after over a month but my insurance statement indicates Aspen charged for fluoride treatment, which I did not have. I had also had full Xrays within a few months at my previous dentist and had those records sent to Aspen but they insisted on doing a whole new set. The technician did not wear protective gear or radiation monitor when using a hand held Xray device. I have never seen someone so cavalier about shooting Xrays and advised her she was taking a risk. The Dentist looked at my teeth and asked when I had caps placed, which I never have had, this did not instill my confidence in him. After the appointment, I learned he is not in my preferred Provider network so my insurance company may not cover his services. It will be interesting to see what they try to bill me for. I needed a partial for my lower left tooth and made the mistake to go to Aspen Dental in Cicero NY. The first thing they do is to run excessive x-rays both panoramic and single. I tough I was going to get only one or maybe two x-ray for the purpose of what I was there for. But no. I had to stop the tech from taking x-rays that were clearly not needed for my need of a lower partial. I asked to see the dentist and told him that the amount of x-rays were excessive and not needed. He told me that it was needed even though he new very well that he was lying. The reason they take that many unnecessary x-rays is because they want to up-sell you on all their services. They are just in it for the money and care very little for you. This place is a disgrace for the dental profession and should be avoided period. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. I was scheduled for an appointment on 7/3 and was reassured multiple times that the office would be open the day before Independence Day. I was told that the next available appointment other than 7/3 would be two weeks after. When I arrived on 7/3, I realized that the office was closed. I'd made changes in my holiday plans just for this appointment. When I tried to reschedule the appointment, I was told I'd need to wait THREE more weeks. The lady on the phone was extremely rude, refusing to acknowledge that the office had sent me multiple automated text messages confirming my 7/3 appointment. She also threatened to hang up the phone and talked over me. I'd paid $300 (with insurance) for three dental cleanings because I didn't want to wait a total of 6 weeks for an appointment. I told the lady that I wasn't interested in the other two dental cleanings. She was only willing to give me a $150 refund. I asked her to give me a $200 refund because I'd paid $300 for three separate 30min cleanings. These dentists are a bunch of money-hungry charlatans who have no passion for helping patients. The doctor is great, if you can actually get in to see him. Dealing with the staff is a huge challenge. Phones not answered, phone messages not returned. Misinformation, conflicting information, baffling Catch-22, Through-the-Looking-Glass exchanges. Long waits past scheduled appointment times. Address the patient like an errant kindergartener. I would like to keep coming here, because of the doctor, but don't know if there's a way to make it work. read more

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. I am an employee of Cornell and on the First Ameritas Dental Plan B (Low cost; I don't use dental care that much). I found Aspen Dental through the search from the First Ameritas web page and thought I'd try them out***. Long story short, they are not "participating" in the network, they billed $180 for an exam and x-rays, they refused to clean my teeth (they said I needed a "gingival cleaning" which costs more than the regular cleaning) and it ended up costing me $130 out of pocket ($100 deductible and then $30 because they charge more than what the plan calls usual an customary). They also tried to sell me an oral cancer screening ($60, not covered by insurance) and also a gingivitas home care kit ($200, not covered by insurance). It was worse than a car dealership. They actually used the trick, "Don't you care bout your health?" The kicker is that I asked, "Could I just have a normal cleaning today?" and they said "No." Even though that is what I came in for; a cleaning, exam, and x-rays. They are also over-doing the X-rays. They recommended X-rays every 6 months. That's not what the ADA recommends, unless you have terrible tooth conditions. But they are more than happy to bill for it and expose you to more radiation than needed. ***Note that the First Ameritas page shows this... I guess I should have called to check: "Disclaimer: You are strongly encouraged to call our Customer Connections department at 800-487-5553 to verify whether a provider is participating or nonparticipating. Such information may assist in your selection of provider(s) and may affect your deductible, co-insurance, and out of pocket expenses. Even with daily updates to the on-line directory, there is no guarantee that a provider listed in the directory will still be a network provider at the time dental services are performed. When making an appointment, and again at the time of the appointment, please verify network participation with the dentist." In their slight defense, the dentist was courteous and answered my questions, and the X-ray tech was friendly. The whole experience was bizarre. After the exam, I was expecting the hygienist to clean my teeth. Instead, they took me to the salesperson's office who then gave me the sales pitch. My teeth are not that bad, and I had been at a dentist about 10 months before who did not try to hard sell me anything except a mouthguard for my teeth grinding. Avoid Aspen Dental. They recommend unnecessary and expensive options to make as much money off of you as they can. read more

This is my backup dental location (I have unfortunately had to go here twice when my regular dentist was booked solid). Its the only place in Ithaca that will give you an appointment with less than a week's notice. However, there is a reason for this. I'd say the cleanings I have gotten here are sub-par and the atmosphere is very sterile and corporate. They do accept Cornell's dental insurance, but they have also made billing mistakes with me and I have had to go through several calls with them to fix it. I would never trust any advice I would get from them about major operations, or extra services, but for a simple cleaning it is acceptable. read more

I can't review the actual dentistry of this place because it still hasn't happened - this is for the scheduling and management. I came in for a cleaning. Like another reviewer, I was not told that it would be a pre-exam only. I found this out only after waiting to be seen for over an hour and a half and being charged a copay... and told there would be a copay for the cleaning, too! Fine. I really wish you'd told me that on the phone (when you told me I was scheduled for a CLEANING), but I'll work with it. I am scheduled for a cleaning two days later in the morning. I get a call half an hour beforehand, telling me that they have to reschedule. So I'm late for work for no reason. We reschedule for the following day. Same thing happens! Half an hour before, I'm called to reschedule. I'm actually still very patient at this point - things happen, and they are clearly having some trouble with their hygienists. We reschedule for another CITY, the following week, because I need the cleaning prior to my oral surgery. I get a call after COB the day before the surgery telling me that the appointment is cancelled... because the hygienist will instead be in MY city, not the one where I'm scheduled to have the appointment. And no, I cannot get an appointment in my own city for the same day with the same hygienist that I was already scheduled for. And all the offices are closed, so I can't even call my original office to figure out what's going on. I'm fed up. I'm sticking with this place long enough to have the surgery covered by my insurance and then I'm going elsewhere. To be fair - the technicians and dentist were very pleasant and professional, as far as I can tell. But the office managers seem to think my time is completely worthless. I've literally wasted the equivalent of a full workday in the past week alone due to Aspen dental being incapable of keeping a schedule. read more

I made an appointment to have a tooth ache looked at. They did complete x-rays and told me that a filling needed repair and another tooth needed bonding. I asked if everything else was okay. I was told that everything else was fine and no other repairs were needed. The work was done and was told that the gums may be a little sore for a short time. After a week I called back because the soreness hadn't gone away. I was seen and told that the soreness may last up to a month. After two weeks I had an absess and saw the dentist again. This time I was told that I needed a root canal. He gave me a referral for the extraction and to come back for the crowd. I pity the poor soul who walks into this place for free x-rays and a free cleaning. read more

I went to Aspen Dental in February 2022 for a consultation, and had to wait 2 hrs longer to be seen , they claimed they over booked, than my appointment itself. Then signed papers to be put completely out during the procedure, for about $2000 and when I actually went back for the surgeon to remove them, was told by the surgeon that they didn't put people out there. So he would give me a sedative intravenously and numbing shots. I asked if I would have any pain, and he said , 'I don't know' and I said well I guess that I am willing go along with what you offer, since you say that what I signed up for is not available, but i don't know how i will react if i do have pain...he then left the room for a couple of minutes and came back in and said, 'Well, I am not comfortable removing your teeth', which I had 2 abscesses, confirmed by x-ray since November 2021, and he walked out of the surgical room and left me dumb-founded...the nurse assisting apologized for the whole episode and I left the office and on the way out told the girl at the policy signing desk , and the man at the greeting desk, that I would never come back to an Aspen provider...I could not believe the unprofessionalism and disregard for my circumstances by the surgeon, and want others to know what to expect, God forbid, but maybe God was saving me from this particular surgeon from harming me in the long run...TRUTH BE KNOWN written by Doreen Ramaglino. read more

Every time I've gone to this office, the dentists don't interact with the patients. They walk in and walk out and then the hygienist kind of expect you to walk out after. I consistently have to ask the hygienist if I'm done, if I'm getting prescribed anything, if I have to come back- basically there is no communication about what they did and their future plans for you or a goodbye. Nurses or whoever walk in and out the whole time asking about other patients and telling the dentist they have to do something in another room and then come back. This time, there was a visiting dentist who couldn't prescribe what I needed, and I had to go spend 200 more dollars at convenient care for something that she should have been able to do as a dentist to help her patient, since my follow-up wasn't for three weeks. She said she would send an ibuprofen that day, and never did. I called the office the next day to ask that dentist to send in something, was told he would, and nothing was sent again. They don't follow through or really care about you as a patient. And they don't do molar root canals so skip the appointment here and go to someone who can help read more

Find another dentist - it'll be worth it. First off, they don't do a cleaning on your first visit (just x-rays and an exam). In all fairness, they told me that there would be no cleaning on the first visit, so I was prepared at least. But it's still very inconvenient. The dentist told me that I needed a special gingivitis cleaning instead of a typical cleaning. As the dentist was "explaining" the problem to me, he said "look, when I poke your gums with the probe, they start to bleed," and then he jammed the sharp probe into my gums, and of course they bled. I've been going to a very good dentist for a long time, and I've been told I have some mild gum inflammation for years. My old dentist never made a big deal about it or told me I need a "special cleaning" or even a special dental hygiene regimen - just regular flossing. When I asked the dentist if I could schedule a regular cleaning instead, he was very rude and told me "No, you have gingivitis, so we'll only do the gingivitis cleaning." To which I replied, "Yes, but I'm worried it will cost too much." All he said was "the front desk will talk to you about the cost." Not an ounce of understanding... he wouldn't even look me in the eye. My interpretation is that he's being pressured to sell sell sell these extra services and hears this several times a day. The gingivitis cleaning (a two-part visit) and all of the "pre-washes" and a special gingivitis toothbrush totalled $420, and my insurance would only cover a quarter of it. As I was checking out, they just handed me a bill to pre-pay for all of these things and asked me to sign a form saying that I accepted the charges. I said I wasn't interested, and to their credit, the receptionist was nice about it and just removed the charges so that only the day's services were on it (all covered by my insurance, thankfully). However, she didn't allow me to schedule a regular cleaning, so I'm not going back. I will take my business elsewhere. This is a business, and they are trying to sell you as much as they can. They do that by bullying you. If you want a dentist that's not going to do that, go somewhere else. read more

Absolutely horrendous. I was new to the area and needed a new dentist. Aspen Dental drew me in through their "free x-rays and exam for new patients" special. I hadn't had a cavity in 24 years and had just seen a dentist about 6 months prior. After having more x-rays than ever necessary, the dentist saw me. After quickly looking at my x-rays, he told me I needed at least 3 fillings and put a bunch of my other teeth on a "watch list" because they looked like they were developing cavities. When I voiced my concern about this abrupt change in the health of my mouth the dentist simply said, "It happens. The three cavities you need filled are pretty obvious. I am not one to put fillings where they are not needed." The entire experience seemed odd to me so I asked for a copy of my x-rays and sought out a second opinion from the highly respected dentist in my home town. After much more careful examination of my teeth and x-rays, this dentist told me I absolutely did not have any cavities, nor did I have anything remotely close to a developing cavity. I immediately switched dentists right then and there. I will never step back into an Aspen Dental office. In short, please be careful with this company. They perform unnecessary procedures and only care about profits, not patients. Why drill perfectly good teeth? I personally do not trust them, at all. read more

I decided to take my family to Aspen Dental after my long-time dentist retired. I have been disappointed and frustrated again and again with this place. First, as other reviewers have noted, you make an appt. to go in for an initial cleaning--and instead, you get 25 x-rays taken (because the technician can't place the plates correctly), then the dentist checks your mouth, then you're told you have to COME BACK for the actual cleaning--which, BTW, is a two-month wait because they're down to one hygienist. But before I can leave, I'm escorted to the SALES dude who tries to sell me $26 toothpaste and a $150 rotodental brush (I'm not making this up). If you have decent insurance so you can visit a real dentist, AVOID this place. Until I get better insurance, I'm telling Aspen to add a note to all of my family charts that we will NOT pay any out-of-pocket expenses. And I'm going to make sure my kids brush their teeth vigorously and often. Ugh! read more

My daughter lost her front tooth and wanted to see a dentist right away. Aspen had the most flexible hours and allowed her to basically walk in when her appt time did not work with her class schedule. She got the same day service and left happy with her tooth back in place. They were competitively priced and it worked out well. I was nervous at first because they wouldn't give me any idea of the pricing until she went in and considering we didn't have dental insurance that was scary. I feel that if they did have at least some general price guidelines it would have made for a perfect visit so I'm taking away one star for the stress I endured in not knowing the pricing. I also almost scheduled her elsewhere for the next day due to no pricing but my daughter was super stubborn and refused to wait for another dentist. read more

Aspen is on my cheap-o dental insurance network. So I called them when my crown needed to be recemented. I also asked to get my annual exam and cleaning. I got an appointment right away. The office was ok; staff was courteous at the window and X ray machine. The dentist, Dr. Wilson, was nice enough. Until he said he thought that my $900 porcelain crown looked like a "temp." My shields immediately went up, "I've had the same dentist for years and she always uses metal crowns for temps." He said he could cement this one back on. He then said the hygienist would be right in to take a look. After that, he said, I would talk to the office manager for scheduling. No exam by him other than a cursory glance at my X-rays. While waiting for Miranda, the hygienist, to come in I studied the posters on the wall that explained "Deep Cleaning," how it was diagnosed and how it was treated. "Buckle up," I thought to myself. These people are here to SELL things, not TREAT things. Sure enough, Miranda poked around each tooth while calling out numbers which were input by a dental assistant onto my set of full X rays. Having read the "ad" on the office wall, I knew I had enough numbers to put me in the "needs treatment" range. Miranda then handed me a glossy 8 1/2 x 11 folder stuffed full of pamphlets and papers explaining the deep cleaning and scaling she was recommending. I glanced through it waiting for the office manager. I saw dollar signs-my dollars-all over it. The office manager, to her credit, saw that I wanted to get right down to business. "How much for the crown repair?" I insisted on paying the $32 for that right away even though she said I could pay altogether after I decided on a treatment plan and appointments. My out of pocket for the cleaning would have been $289! Not the free cleaning my policy would cover. "Yeah, I'm not gonna do that. Here's your folder back." Later I read up on Aspen Dental's business model.. Pressure selling and in-house financing is part of it. The dentist who is the owner of record for the ithaca "store" is Vikramjit Anand, Anand Dental Health Services PC. "He was disciplined by the state Education Department in 2001 after admitting he extracted healthy teeth without medical justification and dispensed inordinate amounts of controlled substances without medical justification. He was disciplined again in 2006 after he did not contest a charge of having been convicted of filing a false claim for Medicaid reimbursement. In 2012, according to syracuse.com/news, Aspen Dental was accused of using sham owners to circumvent a NY law that says dentists must own practices, not corporations. The suit says Anand in 2006 set up Anand Dental Health Services P.C. which the lawsuit contends is a cover for Aspen's offices in Elmira and Ithaca." (syracuse.com/news) It does not appear the suit has been settled. I wish I had known all this before I went in. My crown has stuck, but I feel like I could have been stuck by Aspen Dental. read more

I went here because my step mom said it was the best option out of those that take our dental insurance. I sure do not want to see those other offices! The x-ray tech had no idea what she was doing and kept having a re-position the plastic poking my mouth every time. About halfway through the protective plastic cover broke but she shoved it back in my mouth before I could say anything. (GROSS). When I was finally through with that torture, I learned I would only be getting an exam not a cleaning that day. I was furious as I had specifically requested an appointment for a cleaning and exam. Since when did you have to make two appointments for a cleaning and an exam? When I expressed my displeasure, I was lectured on how other offices are negligent for cleaning without an exam first. "The exam is necessary to determine the appropriate cleaning." Really? I always thought you needed clean teeth so the dentist could see to properly complete the exam. I was greeted by a very friendly receptionist. After a relatively short wait the technician took me to the X-ray room and did a large series of X-rays. I was, then, escorted to the exam room where I waited no more than five minutes for Dr. Wilson. I was given a thorough exam, told I had no cavities. I then made an appointment for a cleaning within the week, given the (low) written price for my next visit and I was in and out of Aspen Dental in less than one hour. read more

If I could give no stars, I would. I went here with no pain whatsoever and just wanted to get a basic cleaning. Due to possible pregnancy, I declined x-rays. The hygienist was visibly irritated with my decision, literally rolled her eyes, and told me to go back to the waiting room. Finally, they called me back again, and sat me down for a "visual exam". This translates to them putting a bib on me, the dentist poking each of my teeth with an instrument, telling the hygienist I have one crown, then less than a minute later he stood up and told me to come back when I was given the ok for x-rays from my ob-gyn and walked out without another word. They pretty much refused to clean my teeth without x-rays. I have been to many dentists as I move a good deal and declining x-rays was never a problem elsewhere. I'm guessing my insurance got billed for this so-called "exam" that lasted 60 seconds. When I asked the hygienist if I would be billed for whatever it was they just claimed they did, she said she wasn't sure. They tried to get me to schedule my next visit. No way! I will find somewhere else that takes my insurance or I will pay out of pocket before I return to this unfriendly, and money hungry "dentistry" read more

I was then told that a former employee told me wrong and I would have to pay 1000's more for permanent . Sorry tough shit for me. I thought these people were the only ones who accepted my dental insurance so I made an appointment. They schedule their exams and cleanings as separate appointments...ass backwards. Anything to collect more money for another visit. Upon checking out I made sure my insurance would cover the cleaning. I made the appointment for two weeks. She then proceeded to tell me that a fluoride treatment would be 39 dollars out of pocket due at the time of service. I explained to her that I didn't want it or need it and wasn't going to pay for anything unnecessary. She continued to tell me that it's the hygienist's call to make at the end of the cleaning whether I need it or not. The most important thing to know about Aspen is that the FREE x-rays and exam for new patients is ONLY free under particular circumstances! I went there with a dental urgency of one teeth and was told that as a new patient I would HAVE to do the x-rays of all my mouth (about 15). I only agreed because the girl at the counter promised me to use a coupon for new patients. After having done more x-rays than I had ever done before in my life, I was received by the doctor who basically told me that most of my fillings and inlays would have to be redone. He recommended around 4 crowns also. This is especially surprising for me since I just went to my regular dentist 1,5 months ago and she did not say anything! I ended up paying 280 Euros for exam, a temporary filling and the x-rays (finally only free if you don't accept to do all the procedures and the cleaning that they recommend). I am still not sure if they are just over-cautious or trying to make money out of you. What I especially not appreciated was the fact that they buy you with an offered free exam that is finally very expensive. I will definetely contact another specialist. read more

Ithaca office is not helpful or friendly regarding insurance and billing. They want payment up front whether you have full insurance coverage or not. Kelly in office and Bill - office manager are unhelpful. Stated they called insurance company, left messages and never did - they just wanted money up front paid in full prior to any appointment being made. They would reimburse me once my insurance paid them. That isn't the way insurance works - it's a benefit to me - not them. Go to Horseheads office - helpful, knowledgeable and will schedule you an appointment without cash up front. read more

Was on vacation when my tooth began to ache. Called Aspen and they were able to see me that same day. Receptionist was very cheerful and easy to talk to. Had x-rays taken and saw Dr. Wilson after a very short wait. Diagnosed as periodontal infection, so antibiotic and Chlorhexedine rinse prescribed. Recommended seeing a periodontist back home. Insurance covered everything. Quick and easy. Thank you! read more

After reading these reviews, I was worried about my first appointment today. I was actually quite impressed. Every person I had contact with, was very friendly and welcoming. This place was CLEAN, vs. other dentists in Ithaca. To be fair, all heath care is overpriced and super costly but Aspen, I think. was actually less than others.Yes, they try to oversell you at the end- similar to a lot of businesses. I don't like this but be smart people, you are the ones in control. I am returning for another appointment. No, I don't have insurance so I am paying cash out of pocket. I went to this office with a severe tooth ache. They subjected me to a ridiculous number of xrays, clearly to sell me something, not to deal with my tooth ache. I was told I needed a root canal, after the infection was taken care of. Then they wrote up this list of things that needed to be done (after they checked with my insurance to see what it paid and tailored the work to what insurance I had). I went to have a root canal and was told the tooth should be pulled. So $110 later, that office didn't do anything. I had to go back to my regular dentist, who no longer pulls teeth, to get xray for the oral surgeon. I had to pay for that visit (and xray) before I could make appointment with oral surgeon. In the meantime Apen was paid by my insurance for the visit. I paid $200 while I was there, toward this future work which they scheduled. I called and canceled this work because I got such poor service the first time I was there. I was told I would get a credit on my credit card for the "downpayment". Of course they never refunded my money, and when i protested the charge, they again denied to give me my money back. THIS IS THE MOST HORRIBLE DENTIST I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. THEY ARE THIEVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This office offers the service of pulling teeth, so had they been interested in helping me with my problem, that is what they would have done instead of trying to sell future work. The patient was not called into the procedure room until 9:25 am. There the patient again confirmed that the procedure would not be more than 15-20 minutes. At 9:35 the doctor came in; said hello and stated he would be right back. At 9:40 the patient asked the dental assistant where the doctor was. Moments later another doctor came in and the patient again inquired about the length of time the procedure will take. Patient was informed once started it would take about 15-20 minutes. I (patient) made it known at least 3 times that I had a limited time so that I could make it to work ...across town by 10:00 am. I (patient) needed to leave the dental office and reschedule another appointment due to Provider failing to complete procedure as scheduled. This cost is charged to Aspen Dental for the time and inconvenience cause by the neglect on the part of the provider perform the procedure as agreed on the date /time. Love this place. I have been treated with the utmost kindness and respect. There has been no bait and switch, no pressure and even able to negotiate pricing. All of the people that work there are kind and thoughtful. This was one of the worst dentist's office I have ever been to. I went for a toothache a few weeks ago. The person who took my x-rays kept making me gag really badly, which isn't normal for me. Then the dentist breezed through the exam and said I had three cavities after I had a cleaning a few weeks before and everything was fine. He said my teeth did not look good and I needed another cleaning and the cavities filled. I then went to the Aspen Dental in Cortland the dentist there viewed the SAME x-rays and said I DID NOT have cavities. He was also a little upset with how the Ithaca office didn't have any information about my exam. If I could give this place zero stars I would. Make the drive to Cortland if you need to get in fast to a dentist who isn't trying to drive up the cost at every corner. read more

This place is a joke! Went in for tooth pain in August.....Still (Mid October) tooth is not fixed! I had the root canal about a week after being seen by the dentist. Went twice more for cleanings before they tried to fit the crown. The crown fitting was a NIGHTMARE!!!! After 45 min of trying to fit the crown around the tooth, the Dr. finally gave up. My jaw was killing me! I knew it wasn't going to fit as soon as they put it in place but the technician told me that the Dr. just had to adjust it. WRONG!!! So on goes the temporary cap. Later while brushing my teeth...it falls out (fixident holds it in place for a while). They would not take a new impression that day...made an appt for 2 days later...they cancelled it a hour before. Could not get me in for another week and a half. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! I was told I could go in that day as a walk in and wait....I told "Tabitha" the receptionist that I wasn't going to waste a nice day sitting around the dentist office....Her reply was.... I just got a call from my daughter. She has been sitting in an exam chair for almost two hours and hasn't seen anyone. I told her to leave. When I called the place, it said it was closed and to call back during normal business hours. It was 1:15pm! If you are looking to be totally ripped off, go to Aspen Dental. They prey on people not knowing their insurance details, do unnecessary work and then charge you. When you complain they state, well you signed the agreement....I've NEVER had to pay this much for an in-network Doc and will never return or recommend them! read more
