They knowingly overbook appointments and expect you to arrive on time and wait an hour or more because they are "short staffed." I had an 8:30 am appointment made specially to be able to get back to work at a reasonable time. I arrived at 8:15 with all my new patient paperwork filled out, to find six people sitting in the waiting room. They only open at 8:00! I allowed the acceptable 15 minutes then at 8:45 i told them I need to know what time I will be seen. The receptionist had a hurried discussion with a higher up who advised "another 20 minutes OR SO" then started the lame short staffing excuse. So why do you make appointments then? She had no answer. I walked out. Did a little research and found another dentist I'll be seeing in 2 weeks. I chose Aspen because it was a bigger practice who made a point of the 'time reserved especially for you' BS. I was surprised at how well they worked for me. I had a really bad experience with my second dentist ever. I still believe he drilled 7 good teeth when I was young, as my next experience with a drill and teeth was almost pleasant in comparison. He was much later convicted of medicare and medicaid fraud, which didn't surprise me. He was practically the only one in Richmond with two Porsche 900-series cars in his lot. In any case, I had let my teeth go for quite a while, but was obsessive about brushing. I could not bring myself to have teeth filled. My mum and I made a deal before she died that I would have the teeth repaired and Aspen Dental had a plan to finance everything (GE Capital, currently) and, while I'm sure the company loves to make money, their prices were reasonable and their staff was comforting. The first appointment was for the inspection, including the x-ray exposures. The dentist was thorough, friendly, and made sure that I was okay throughout the procedure. Afterward, Becky explained the financing and set my further appointments based on the examination. When I went for my first two fillings (yes, they double up where possible), I was greeted by a woman who looked and sounded like my Aunt Iona--my ditzy Aunt Iona--whom I wouldn't trust to operate a stove. I mentioned that I was a bit surprised, but kept the rest to myself. We briefly talked and she proceeded to do the rest of the fillings, as that was her primary job at the place. (There were 4 dentists as I recall, but I don't remember seeing the other two ever.) Somewhere in the middle of all the appointments, they had scheduled a cleaning, which seemed odd timing. In any case, they were very thorough with making sure the color and fit of the fillings worked well. Attention to detail was very important to them and I appreciated it. It's a year later, and everything is fine. Surprisingly, I have confidence about going back there. Hopefully, these were the first of my positive dental experiences. Mopps refused to fix my SIX front teeth which SHE SCREWED UP that were perfectly before she tooth them and drilled down to the appropriate percentage prior to previous work prior, she offered to redo my frontal crowns when I came in for a cleaning due to the fact that all my crowns had a space between the gum line exposing the tooth. MOPPS drilled my teeth down to tiny nubs which is almost 80% percent off the tooth gone; that has in turn created a MASSIVE OVER BITE WHICH HAS REALIGNED MY WHOLE JAW. I now suffer from severe gum disease and extreme sensitivity, horrendous smells emanating from my front teeth, constant pain, have had abscesses numerous times on my back teeth.. all which I've called them about speaking to Brittany the receptionist and THEY'VE IGNORED. Their solution instead was to remove the crowns, DRILL MORE OF MY REAL TEETH DOWN RUINING MY BITE AND SMILE, and then place an even larger set of overbite, misaligned, painful, ill fitting teeth which are destroying my health. Teeth are the root to all disease and not I'm looking at terminal because MOOPS CAN'T PUT HER DRILL DOWN. The overbite has worn down my remaining teeth and now I can barely eat, not to mention have not smiled comfortably some she has touched my teeth. A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE. I knew things weren't right so I asked her to rebuild my teeth and she refused. She then told me that someone else can help me. Also refused to glue the huge oversized teeth they made for me but instead send me on my way which temp glue which hadn't successfully worked and kept removing because I have non existent original teeth that she destroyed. I found my new dentist! Had an infected tooth, everyone there was extremely polite and welcoming. Scheduled my appointment to have the tooth pulled and overslept. I called and they told me to go ahead and come in asap and they would take care of me. I was forty five minutes late to my appointment and they still made time to get me in. All the office ladies are nice and the Dr was very professional letting me know exactly what he was doing and constantly making sure I was comfortable. I called to make an appointment, making sure to tell them what insurance I had because I wanted to get the exam and cleaning that are provided by my insurance. When I arrived for my appointment I was told that they do not take my insurance. When I told them that 1) their insurance came up on my insurance carrier website as an office that carries my insurance and 2) when I called to make my appointment I again confirmed that they took my insurance, the office rep informed me that maybe other Aspen Dental offices take my insurance, but the doctor there does not take any state-funded insurances. Amazing. They have a big sign on their front window stating that you can get a free exam and X-rays if you don't have insurance, but they won't see you with insurance. Something is just not right about that, especially when you consider the advertisements that Aspen Dental runs indicating how they are all about helping out the little guy. My time has now been taken away from this afternoon going for this appointment and I will have to take more time going to another dentist who will hopefully not lie to me over the phone and waste another afternoon. read more

I went to Aspen dental as I had severe pain from a cavity. The dentist told me they would have to pull the tooth and scheduled me for the next Monday. I have an extreme fear of dental work and let them know this on my first visit. Aspen Dental does not offer any kind of medication or laughing gas to help with "calming" a patient, but I was in so much pain, I kept the appointment. On the day of the appointment, the dentist could not get me numb. He would try to pull the tooth and I would cry and he would give me another shot. Finally, he just did it. He pulled my tooth (a bottom back tooth, so it took at least 45 seconds for him to get it out--which does not sound long, but when you are in extreme pain, it is forever) and I felt EVERY pull, twist, yank... EVERYTHING! It was horrible! I screamed, cried, even kicked my feet. He just walked out after. Did not say anything, just left the hygienist there and walked out. I kept the tooth. Looking at it, the cavity could have been filled. There was no need to pull it!!! Aspen Dental is like a factory; their patients are just parts on a conveyer belt. It was the worst dental experience of my life and I will never go back. To add insult to injury, our insurance found that they overcharged us for the procedure and we had to deal with getting the money refunded. read more

Do NOT go here unless money is not an issue. I will say this of the staff. Very nice people. Everyone treated me well. I couldn't ask for better in that regards. However, a $13,741 treatment plan is ridiculous. I am so thankful that I called around and found a second opinion. Everyone else charges roughly half of what they do. Upon having a second exam elsewher, my total charges for everything would only be 7241. Crowns at aspen=$1153. Crowns everywhere else = around $753. Do your research. Don't let places like this take advantage of you. read more
