They wanted to charge me almost $1000. The dentist offered to fill some of my cavities right then and there- which now that I think about it was a tricky way to get me to commit to spending money and not have a chance to think about it. I got a second opinion and found out that I did have two cavities. I also had a problem with them overcharging me $150, which luckily my insurance caught. I always loved going to the dentist until I went to Richmond Family Dentist. As one person I talked to said, only go here if you have amazing dental insurance and don't mind the up sale. I arrived at 8:15 with all my new patient paperwork filled out, to find six people sitting in the waiting room. They only open at 8:00! I allowed the acceptable 15 minutes then at 8:45 i told them I need to know what time I will be seen. The receptionist had a hurried discussion with a higher up who advised "another 20 minutes OR SO" then started the lame short staffing excuse. So why do you make appointments then? She had no answer. I walked out. Did a little research and found another dentist I'll be seeing in 2 weeks. I chose Aspen because it was a bigger practice who made a point of the 'time reserved especially for you' BS. Awful, Awful, Awful Dentist Office! these people have NO IDEA what they are doing…read more 1) They shined a light in my mouth screening for oral cancer -- it took 2 minutes. At the end they tried to charge me $50 out of pocket!!! THEY NEVER ASKED MY PERMISSION TO DO THE SCREENING. So, I refused to pay it. 2) I had a crown ordered and I showed up for my appointment to have it put in. THERE WAS NO APPOINTMENT on the books for me EVER. They had to fit me in since I drove there but I had to wait for an hour to be seen. 3) I showed up for another appointment and they had me scheduled for the same day the NEXT week. I put it into my cell phone when the appointment was made...so either they told me the wrong date or they put it in their computer wrong. 4) THIS IS THE BIG ONE. They will DO THINGS that will void YOUR INSURANCE! Insurance has guidelines that has to be followed in order to be accepted. Smiles for Life is so INCOMPETENT that they will schedule things and do things in such a way that your insurance will DENY the procedure and you will be stuck with the WHOLE COSTS OUT OF YOUR POCKET. My insurance changed and I inquired what my out of network cost would be, so I could continue at this location. I was given a number, but the actual out of pocket was 3 times that amount!!! I could have found a new dentist in my network, which is now a certain. I was NEVER told this could be higher, I was told this was my out of pocket expense. Trying to explain my concerns to Dr Shoba was impossible because I couldn't get a word in. I feel I was misled and they dropped the ball. This was on top of a previous experience, a couple of years earlier. I went in for an issue with a tooth, and they suggested, since I was there to go ahead and do my cleaning (I had an appointment for the next month), this would save me a visit. But this took place before the 6 month window so my insurance didn't cover any of it. I had to pay it all out of pocket. I believe that situation was their responsibility to make sure I was within insurance guidelines, It would be a fair expectation to receive accurate information, and they failed both times. I would not recommend this office. I started out at this location with Dr Miller, and when he retired things were never the same. He would have handled it much better. Several different dentists have been through this place like a revolving door. I will not return.
