Went for our first visit. My appointment and my husband's appointment was confirmed 3 separate times. Upon initial contact, via email and phone call. We arrive and are told that we can't be seen because it's denture day and they are all booked. Then we are told we can't have X-rays and talk with doctor but no cleaning which was what the appointment was for- I specifically asked for an appointment for a cleaning. We are then told it will cost us $29.00. Beware they DO NOT bill insurance up front- we were told we pay everything up front, they then submit to insurance and if we have overpaid they (Aspen Dental) will refund the difference. I don't know about you but dental work is expensive and I don't have boat loads of cash and rely on my bill to be submitted to insurance first. So beware I didn't feel comfortable with their policy- never encountered it before and I didn't like it. We left and went back to our former dentist which is out of network but still covers 80% and submits bills before asking us to pay up front. read more

Aspen Dental ugh! It's more pleasant buying a used car. The attempt to 'up sell' me on my first appointment was like being at a dishonest car dealership. Confirming appointment times is a nightmare! Several months ago I had an appointment, I confirmed it 3 times via email and a verbal confirmation. A few minutes later I get another call asking me to confirm, I did. A few minutes later the same lady called me back and said since I didn't confirm verbally my appointment was given to someone else (probably a cash customer) and had to reschedule a couple of months later for today. Well, today it was the exact sequence of a couple of months ago, confirmed 3 times on line and I called to confirm verbally, I got a recording saying my appointment was confirmed, a couple of minutes later I got a call asking for verbal confirmations!!!! I don't have the convenience to answer my phone every time someone calls. I canceled and will never return. There was no apology or explanation just a thank you! read more

When a molar broke recently, I scheduled a Saturday visitation with the Aspen Dental facility in Shallotte. I was able to get in fairly quickly although there were considerable telephone calls back and forth to confirm my dental insurance information. I showed up on time and was asked to complete a series of background docs, pretty typical. Each step in the process, I was informed I would meet with the business admin to discuss their 'treatment plan'. I met with three individuals, including the dentist, each talking about the treatment plan. Now, I am experiencing some discomfort from the broken tooth but it appeared that the primary objective was to engage me in the 'treatment plan' rather than extraction of the decayed tooth. I did talk the dentist into at least calling in some antibiotics to my pharmacy but there would be no extraction that day until we agreed to the treatment plan. A little background, I had been on a 'treatment plan' for four years at Fusion Dental in Raleigh, prior to moving here a year ago. In fact, my last visit was September 2020, as part of that plan. The dentist there had targeted the suspect tooth as a future item to resolve with a possible root canal. The main point is I was on a treatment plan and consistent with quarterly cleanings and cavity fills, etc. There were only about 15 months in between dentists (the move and the COVID caused delays) so I expected a suggested extraction of the bad tooth, a recommended root canal for the adjacent one, and a possible cavity fill. I brush my teeth every day, without fail. I floss about once a week but had ceased with the presence of the bad tooth. I don't drink soda and my sweeteners for ice tea are Splenda or Stevia to minimize sugar intake as I am a Type 2 diabetic. Due to dieting, sweets are rare. So, you can imagine my shock when the business admin sat down with a 66-point 'treatment plan' that totaled $10,209 with a discount final total of $9981. It was four pages long with 66 items that included several crown replacements (I guess my previous dentist didn't do a good enough job because they were hers), an electric toothbrush (I already had from my previous dentist), and FOUR extractions, etc...etc. The question I had was how could my mouth go south so fast in fifteen months since I was following a dental treatment plan religiously before. I then started questioning the validity of my previous dentist, Fusion Dental, in Raleigh. I examined their ratings and they were all 95% or 4.5 out 5, which would have been my assessment. So, how could their work be bad enough requiring so much rework--in fact, 10 grand of rework. I did some research on Aspen Dental, a national chain with about 1100 operations nationwide. I found the following from an impartial consumer advocacy group: -3,572,521 reviews on ConsumerAffairs are verified. -We require contact information to ensure our reviewers are real. -We use intelligent software that helps us maintain the integrity of reviews. -Our moderators read all reviews to verify quality and helpfulness. -rated 2.6 out of 5 --a big difference I also found this: The Center for Public Integrity (CPI) and FRONTLINE spent months examining Aspen Dental and found that the same business model that makes Aspen Dental accessible to people short on cash can also lock people into debt and has led to complaints of patients being overcharged or given unnecessary treatments. I saw this as well from SiteJabber, a business reviewer: Aspen Dental has a consumer rating of 1.12 stars from 33 reviews indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Aspen Dental ranks 86th among Dentist sites. Since the facility in Shallotte is new, it was difficult to find multiple reviews outside of the company's website so I researched the closest I could find, Myrtle Beach, which yielded the following rating: 2.5 out of 5 rating from 16 contributions. Pretty consistent rating But if those were not enough, Google search 'Aspen Dental Lawsuits' and you will be stunned at the hundreds of consumer and state attorney general lawsuits. Need I say more? It occurred to me that the 66-point 4-page treatment plan was a natural outgrowth of a visit to this operation. To be fair--not all of those 66 items included a charge like Oral Hygiene Instructions and totals. I am certainly not used to writing such lengthy reviews on local businesses but felt the corporate business practices have an unfortunate influence on this branch, which is a shame. I'm not sure it gets worse than Aspen. They literally cancel your appointment on the day of or you will show up and they don't even have a dentist or a hygienist available to see you without even telling you. Cancel my last appointment on the day of and literally had to reschedule 6 months out. No other options and if you have any form of dental emergency it's a joke. They must not pay very well because they cannot keep a single staff member and every single time I go in my dentist and hygienist are a completely different team. Very disappointing. I booked a routine cleaning back in April 2024 and the next available appointment wasn't until end of February 2025. I confirmed my appointment a few days prior by the email they had sent me. I tried calling the office to confirm the time since they had changed the time since I originally booked. I never got them to answer but confirmed it via their automated message. I go to my appointment and they told me canceled it since they called me the day prior and I never answered. I had changed my phone number and tried to change it online but it didn't let me. I did not think it was huge deal since I already confirmed my appointment via their email they had sent me and planed to change it during my appointment since they never answer or call you back. She told me the next available appointment wasn't until August which would have been over a year since I booked the original appointment. I had even bought their Aspen Savings Plan back in March to save on their services and I was never able to use it because they could never get me an appointment. Waste of time and money. I need to replace an existing lower denture that attaches to 4 implants via a snap system. Denture broke 2 years ago and was repaired but has broken again. Appointment made for 7:30 am on a Monday. Come 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork as instructed. Door locked until 7:30. 4 people arrived after me and were seated. I was invited in to speak to a financial coordinator at 7:45. Back out to the freezing waiting room. I'm told they will take a pano and then I will finally get to see a dentist. Depending on her evaluation and the office pricing I will have them create a replacement. Otherwise I will try another practice. Right now I've given them 1 star. Still sitting freezing in waiting room at 7:50. My daughter works for a dental office near Charlotte and it runs on time. I am very unimpressed with Aspen Dental. This is not a professional way to treat a potential new patient! read more

My wife and I visited Aspen Dental in Shallotte, NC on 7 November for our initial appointments. Was changing from the general dentist that we had been using since 2013 because she no longer is a Delta Dental Plan Provider, so we had become an out of FEDVIP plan patient. At Aspen I waited a very long time, after full X-rays, to finally see Dr. Chang. Was provided a treatment plan at my cost of $246 (which included deep scaling which I do not need) after insurance. Told her that I just needed my 6 month cleaning, but she said she could not do that without the recommended treatment plan. Aspen did have my bite X-Rays from my previous dentist from May 2022. I have periodontal disease which has been treated and is in a controlled state....as long as I get semi-annual cleanings. Bottom line is I first called Delta Dental who told me my treatment was my choice not Aspen's. Secondly, since I would have had to pay the $246 at Aspen, I went back to my previous dentist and had her do the semi-annual cleaning. Logic here is if I was going to have to pay at Aspen and at my previous dentist, it made more sense to go back to someone who has been treating me since 2013. Yes I will still have to pay an out of plan payment, however she charges a lower fee so my overall out of pocket charge will be way less than the $246. She agreed that I do not need a deep scaling treatment at this time! Appears that Aspen has protocals that are not flexiable even after talking to the patient. I pay cash for my wifes dental work. This being a new place I figured I would get a price to see how they would compare. They couldnt give me a price until we went into the business. First red flag. So we get there and the doors were locked and had to wait for them to open them. We came when instructed. So we go in and fill out the normal paperwork. Get in the back they do their normal routine check her out then we go up from to the what i assume is the "billing manager". They gave us a price for xray cleaning and one cavity fill. They beat around the bush on how much it was all they tried to push was finance finance finance. I will leave it as they were the highest price I have ever got anywhere ever. We left and wont be back until they get right with their pricing. Now on a positive note, the staff was friendly. read more
