I went to Aspen for a couple of years, as they were the only area dentist that accepted the dental plan I had purchased. i went for an appointment, and after the work was complete, they informed me that they no longer accepted my plan, so i was stuck with the entire bill. just now NEW DON'T WAISTE YOUR TIME!!! I made my appointment abt a month in advance thinking it was for a cleaning. Little did I know it was a pre evaluation. They took a pano X-ray and lots of other X-rays. Then I went back they checked my gums and the Dr said my teeth looked good. The office manager Meghan came in next and said I had gingival and couldn't do a cleaning without a treatment plan. It was over $900 and my part was $444. And I'm had insurance and was in network... hmmm I think they were smoking crack or something. I go to my old dentist 2 days later he cleaned my teeth and said they looked great no problems at all. I had 2 appointments for a cleaning for my daughter and myself. After taking x-rays of both of us, we were told they only had time for one cleaning. My younger daughter had several teeth filled. Now, less than a year later, she has to have a pulp cap put on by another dentist b/c there is decay in the filling. It clearly wasn't done correctly. She also needs to have another re-filled. Google seems to love removing my reviews, so let's try Yelp, which is almost always more open and honest! I've been going to this Aspen Dental for about 2 years. It was fine at first, and they were generally helpful and had good, effective communication, but as I kept going, I've had more and more doubts and problems arise. Constantly, I've been told that I need root canals, fillings, cleanings, and other prescription and recommendations that feel generally unnecessary. I got all the treatments they've prescribed me, and I've still had pain and discomfort. Every time I've brought up said pain or discomfort, it's been dismissed as "sensitivity" or "discoloration," and I've just been put on what seemed like new trendy, expensive, upscale dental products without actually addressing the root of the problem; that, and I've also been told "It's not a cavity yet." Yet... so they're going to LET IT progress into a cavity? Is that what I'm hearing? I've previously expressed concerns about there potentially being cavities, but they've said there's nothing there. Recently, I came in for a cleaning, and while I was there, the dentist and hygienist were discussing the diagnoses, treatments, and names of other patients, which definitely made me questions the privacy practices between patients and providers. Towards the end of the cleaning, I was told I needed an x-ray. I went in and got the x-ray done, only to be told I need an extraction. So, after all the times I've been complaining and expressing concerns, they didn't think to do any x-rays or checkups, and only waited until the cleaning appointment, which really came off as dismissive. Not only that, but when the dentist came in and checked my teeth, he explicitly said, "Number 2... extraction... surgical." When I asked what tooth needed an extraction, both the hygienist and the dentist said "three teeth on the upper left." Three whole teeth is a concerning amounts, especially after all my complaints not being addressed or taken seriously. They didn't actually check me for cavities at my previous appointments, and now there's suddenly cavities forming under my fillings? I have my doubts, especially since cavities typically take months/years to form; a cavity being so bad to the point of needing an extraction would've taken a long time to form, so that was either missed or dismissed, which is a major problem either way. On top of that, the cavities under the fillings are so tiny, and they don't look nor feel like any of the other root canals I've had. The cavities they showed were not root/pulp deep, and I don't believe there was a need to be concerned to this extent. Also, the number 2 they mentioned is always referred to as the second tooth on the UPPER RIGHT, not the left. They constantly pointed to different teeth and said "these need root canals," or "no, it's actually these teeth," or "these teeth had root canals" (which I'm certain they didn't), and just being generally inaccurate and confusing with their explanations and directions. They keep switching which teeth "need" root canals and/or extractions, and it's all very unclear. Either way, if I absolutely "needed" an extraction, I would be rolling over, screaming and crying in pain, begging for my tooth to be removed. My teeth most likely do not need a full extraction, maybe a filling at the very least, but I'll ultimately need a second opinion. After being told I needed this extraction, I brought up the countless amounts of time I've complained and been told there's nothing wrong. The hygienist explained that she's never seen me before and that she doesn't know what I've previously been told, which may true, but she also told me there are "no root canals in my mouth," which is absolutely not true; I have two root canals, and the hygienist instantly denying my previous treatments makes me question the credibility in what they're all saying and the way they keep documentation. As for the dentist, he also said he's never seen me before, which is 100% false. I went in because of a gum infection towards the beginning of the year, and he was the same one who prescribed me antibiotics and assessed my teeth; this should all be in my previous medical documents. He was quite condescending when he told me I "need to be supervised" when brushing my teeth and jumping to random conclusions without even asking or discussing anything. At my previous appointments, I was told there's nothing wrong and my teeth look fine, and now I'm being treated like I have the dental hygiene and capabilities of a 2 year old. My experience here was generally patronizing, and I feel misled and confused about my own medical needs and information. read more

I called, beforehand asking about my insurance was told they accepted it. Go to my appointment and pay before the visit and do all the x-rays and at the tail end was told. We don't take your insurance. The person that did my x-rays was very polite and respectful. I rarely write reviews, but am compelled to due to my experience today at Aspen in State College . It was not until today that I can understand why some people fear going to the dentist. I have always had positive experiences with dental care throughout my life. until today. the hygienist was beyond rude, unprofessional, sarcastic. she was rough, rushing, and I now have sores on the inside of my cheek and on my tounge. In contrast, the dentist was pleasant and professional. However, the hygienists crass, unprofessional behavior was not something I will subject myself to again. so glad all of my previous experiences with other dental offices were positive. the experience at Aspen with the hygienist was absolutely awful. I would never recommend going there as long as she is on staff. I'm on a waiting list to go elsewhere rather than return there. read more

I was given an exam with extensive xrays and told that I had the start of gum disease and they wouldn't clean my teeth until I went through a cleaning process they recommended. Of course my insurance didn't cover this I quickly exited the bldg, and said I wasn't interested. Went to a dentist in state college who took xrays and said everything was good and cleaned my teeth no problem less than a month later covered by my insurance. I was searching for a dentist a while back so I went on my insurance company's website and searched. Aspen dental was listed as accepting my insurance and taking new patients. I called to make an appointment and having been through insurance crap too many times over the years I asked about my insurance. I was told that they would deal with that when I got there. (Red flag!) I went anyway and the BS started as soon as I pulled out my insurance card. Big surprise, right. I was told that NO, they don't accept my insurance. The dentist that owns the practice does but he doesn't work there. He lives and works in Pittsburgh!?!? They offered me their free introductory package that consists of free x-rays and a free cleaning. WTF!?!? What kind of game is this?!?! I need a permanent, long term dentist. I waited over 50 mins in the waiting room before I was taken back. Once I was taken to the back I felt like they where trying to rush me in and out as fast as they could. Once I got my X-ray done and was in the chair waiting to see the Dental hygienist it took about 30 mins before they even came back. Once they where done it took almost another 30 mins to see the doctor. They told me what I had to get fix and that was really it and did not explain the options I had and recommended a tooth paste for me to use but never told me the name of the toothpaste and just felt like they wanted to be done for the day and get me out of the office. The overall experience was not pleasant and I would not be going back to them. Took over 2 hrs for just a check up. read more

I was lucky because I decided to get a second opinion. I learned that they recommended unnecessary treatment. They missed the hole in my crown moller as well as another issue. I wouldn't trust the expertise. It appears that they are recommending unnecessary treatment while missing serious and legitimate issues. Stay away. The dentist I saw today was terrible and nobody responded well to his failure. First off, he was "filling in" for another dentist? Why wasn't I notified if the dentist I wanted to see wasn't in. Second, he kept making mistakes - accidentally ripping the corner of my mouth by jerking the skin around, fumbling the equipment in my mouth causing a spring loaded grip tool to crunch against my teeth painfully (even with ample anesthetic) not once but four times. He kept just saying "sorry" (10 times) and "we are almost done" (8 times) as if he didn't know what else to say and was so freaked out by doing the procedure that he'd lost all verbal control...and we were NOT "almost done" when this started. Did I mention it was a simple filling? This is not a hard procedure for a dentist, I would hope. He kept asking the dental assistant what to do, how she would do it (again, she is an assistant and not a dentist). Third, he complained, while working in my mouth, that he didn't want to work two fillings back-to-back, and that he doesn't normally do this. If he felt forced into it, or that he didn't have a choice...well he could have said "no", I hope. Otherwise, this place has some bizarre staffing policies. I can't imagine. This is the second disgruntled worker I saw there. Fourth, when he finished the filling, my bite was totally off. My teeth could only make contact against the filling and NOWHERE else. Ever try to tap other teeth together and be completely unable? It's jarring and unsettling. Fifth, he REFUSED to believe me when I told him it was wrong and that the filling was the only place my teeth could now make contact. He REFUSED to fix it. He said, "give it a few days and if it is still a problem, call us and come back in..." very flippant, very condescending, rolling his eyes. It was horrible. Like we can all just take another day off work to go back to a dentist who refuses to believe there's a problem. Afterward, luckily, I stayed and kept asserting to other staff that there was a problem. One tried to claim it must just have been my teeth...even after I explained that it wasn't a problem before coming in today. Finally, the administrative staff took me seriously (the desk staff are some of the only competent and empathetic staff in this office), and made sure to get the owner to come in and look at my teeth. At least he took one look and said, "Yep, there's a problem" and fixed it in less than a minute by properly smoothing out the filling... I was so upset by that experience though. I would NOT recommend using this dentist office. Avoid it at all costs. Also - their website says they have 5 stars...there is no star rating system for reviews on their own website, they don't let you submit a negative review in fact. My daughter, a minor, had an appointment with the office in State College. Upon arrival for an initial appointment I was told that I would not be able to go back with my daughter due to COVID. After requesting to speak with the dentist, she agreed on this one occasion I would be allowed back, not for anytime afterwards. I declined and stated we will find a different dentist. First, this is unethical as my daughter is a minor and cannot advocate nor consent for her treatment. Second, this should've been something that was stated prior to her appointment. I will be reporting this office to the board and do not suggest anyone use this office. Furthermore, after speaking with others about this, I found out the same situation occurred to them prior to COVID and was told they do not allow parents back as it may make seeing minors more difficult. Again, unethical and this company should not be allowed to treat minors nor have such a policy put into place. read more

Was very pleased with my experience. I haven't been to the dentist in several years due to some life complications and a new, more demanding job, so I knew going in that the first cleaning would be a doozy. They did a magnitude of xrays and told me my problems, which I suspected, scheduled me for a cleaning and did a fantastic, thorough job. I'm very pleased. The staff seemed very nice. Overall, a good experience, and only a 5 minute drive from my work as opposed to my former dentist who moved and was now 40 minutes away. read more

This was the worst dentist visit of my life; seriously, fuck corporate dentistry. I visited State College, PA's, Aspen Dental location for a check-up and cleaning. The X-Ray Tech I encountered was particularly rude and demeaning, treating me, a 23 year old woman like a child during the x-ray and "mouth scanning" process. The woman made rude comments about the size of my mouth and the "large amount of spit I was producing" -- comments that were both (a) in poor taste and (b) having nothing to do with my oral care and treatment. Furthermore, outside of my own poor experience, I witnessed the poor treatment of an elderly man patient who was complaining of mouth pain. Because I was in the room adjacent to this patient, I did not directly see what was happening, but the rude and demeaning way and words they used to speak to this elderly patient was both unprofessional and uncaring. Many times he would stop in the middle of the visit to explain something or tell his examiners that he was in pain, only to be met with shouts of "KEEP YOUR MOUTH OPEN, KEEP YOUR MOUTH OPEN; WE CANNOT COMPLETE THE PROCEDURE IF YOU KEEP TALKING." When he was gagging on his own spit, they shouted that he could not swallow until they completed his examination. Overall, my experience was absolutely terrible and I will not be going back. read more

This place was awful. I didn't want Xrays of my teeth because I am against unnecessary radiation and only came in for a cleaning, not for Xrays. They made me get Xrays and told me that the Xrays have about as "much radiation as the tanning beds you look like you use." I don't use tanning beds, I just have dark skin. I was offended and then even more angered by the long wait and the fact that my scheduled cleaning was not a cleaning at all - just a "new patient appointment" which meant some silly evaluation of tooth hardness with no actual cleaning done. The appointment was total garbage and a scam to get insurance $. When I had the Xrays they took sent to a different dentist it turned out the images were of parts of my neck!! Not even of my teeth at all. Total bull shit. Whoever was doing the Xrays had no clue what they were doing. read more

Stay away from this dental office. This is the first time i went to a dentist office and feel so uncomfortable. The waiting wasn't long ( about 15-20mins) but the service was horrible. I came here for root canal treatment because it been bothering me so much. I can't eat or sleep well. Before making appointment, i already told them the reason i wanted to visit a dentist. On the appointment day, a dentist hygienist came in and talk to me like we don't know what you want . I was like i came here for a root canal treatment. She was like you have to wait for doctor to exam. Then she forcing me into a teeth cleaning. I was like "sure" and I was so regretted after accepted her offer. She is so harsh on checking my gum. She was using some sharp object to poke in every single area of my gum on each teeth. I had experience with dentist before, it's not like idk. But they never hurt me like that. Then when it comes to teeth cleaning, omg, it's the most painful process ever. And guess what, she tried to forcing me to get Florine after teeth cleaning even though i told her I don't want to. And then she tried to charge me extra money and idk what's that for. Luckily, o asked the other nurse why they charging me like this? Guess what they said? "Oh because some area of your teeth require a deep cleaning. That's why we charge you extra" . I was thinking like "wth" i never been charge like this before. This is a fk joke. I did not wish to embarrass myself and resort to begging so I now sit here unnecessarily uncomfortable and worrying about infection. Who does this??? Easy to schedule. Quickly seen once initial paperwork was done. Only been there once so far. Too soon to decide if they provide quality dental care that is affordable. read more

This is a truly terrible dentist practice and way too expensive. They try to force you to take X-rays every 6 months, instead of every year like every other dentist. They were also very unhelpful when setting up my first appointment, because they just scheduled an exam and not a cleaning. They made me come back a second time for a cleaning! Then, even though I had never had a cavity before, I get a filling there when they say I have a cavity, but 6 months later, they say I have yet another cavity. I knew then they were a scam. I cannot afford to go and get both X-rays and cavities twice a year. I went to a new dentist who informed me I didn't actually have a cavity and haven't had one for years since. Also you don't get private cleaning rooms like every other dentist so it's all very uncomfortable. read more
