I am a long time Hoboken local- I live a 2 minute walk from Aspen. I have been forced to shop there for years due to limited competition. but have finally weaned myself off of it. I regularly find expired and rotted food, and they really couldn't care any less about it. They usually deny it's a problem and have more than once accused me and others of lying about it. I really love coming to this market. Even though they are more expensive than a big supermarket, I find it to be an all around better experience. You see a lot of the same friendly faces, always around to answer questions, it is never too crowded, and they have fresh produce and meats. They have everything you'll need here: a fresh fish market, a butcher, a bakery, a full cheese section, etc. You'll find nearly all of the brands you might be loyal too and a few other more bougie or organic brands as well. I really am always super impressed with the produce section. I feel like the bigger stores in town are never fresh enough and here I am usually pretty confident that I am getting quality greens, veggies, bags of salad mix, avocados, fruits, you name it. They recently added a few self service stations as well as some cashiers, so the line is never really long at all which is another HUGE bonus. I wouldn't really come here for a large hall for the week because it is pretty pricey, but if you live in town and want to shop for a recipe or the next couple days, you should go here. read more

I went to Aspen Market about three weeks ago as I was in Hoboken. The store was super stinky and dirty, and the hot bar did not look fresh. I would not buy anything there, and the prices were really inflated. I'd go to many other nearby grocery stores anyway. The store gave a sense of decay. read more

Recently stopped by this market because I was looking for a place where to do a full shop without having to go to Acme or Shoprite. This place fits that bill. There's produce, a butcher, fish, cheese, a bakery, etc. I even found quail eggs! However, while you COULD do a full shop here... you might not want to (read below). I think the big problem stems from the fact that there isn't a lot of turnover of the food items here. While the produce selection was great... (I picked up bok choy, mangos, coconut, berries, among other things) nothing seemed fresh. The strawberries were mushy by the next morning and noticed that all the avocados were ripe to over ripe. Same problem at the bakery. I had to search around for bread that wasn't stale. I suppose that since at some point the items were fresh... you might just have to go at the right time when the shelves are restocked? But who knows when that happens? Overall, this place has a good variety of items (enough to do a full shop in one trip). But unless you are lucky enough to find the fresh stuff out of all the rotten stuff... it's just not worth the high price. read more

This was a good store when it was Garden of Eden. Since Aspen Marketplace took over it's been downhill all the way. Price gouging Kings...If you like spoiled produce and all groceries in general pretty bad. Staff is lacking in a few brain cells..and absolutely poor management altogether. Only reason I used them is because they were close and they deliver. But everything else is just way below standard for sure. Too expensive and selection none existent. If you don't like higher end goods, then don't come here. Most of the bad reviews are from people who have no business coming into this market because they just want everything to be cheap. If that's you, go to ShopRite or Walmart. For those of us that appreciate the finer things in life, this market has exactly what you need. Best organic produce around, yes it doesn't last as long because it's ORGANIC, it shouldn't last as long, that's a sign you're eating something that isn't packed full of chemicals. Best meat and cheese selections I've found anywhere in the area by far. Seriously, this place carries things you can't find anywhere else on it's shelves because the own understands food. The only reason I'm leaving two stars is for the location, which is pretty convenient. This store must have severe refrigeration issues because anything I buy - cheese, produce, frozen products - goes bad FAR earlier than it should. Several of my friends in the area who have shopped at Aspen have made very similar complaints, so I know this is not an issue with my fridge. Additionally, echoing the comments of others, I've purchased things in-store only to get home and realize that the expiration date was two weeks earlier. Buyer beware - make sure you check the ex. date on everything! And I know everything in Hoboken is expensive, but the prices here are so inflated for low-quality products. read more

Don't go to this market if you don't want to get Covid! The cashiers refuse to disinfect their hands between customers, even when politely asked. I even spoke with the manager, who said he discouraged them from doing so because it was bad for their hands to put hand sanitizer on them between customers. This has happened on more than one occasion at this store. Most recently, I asked the cashier and she said her hands are always clean and that she had just washed them. But she had just checked out a customer in front of me, so I asked her to use hand sanitizer before touching my groceries. She refused and told me: "Welcome to Jersey. Ever since they switched from Garden of Eden they have gone downhill. The quality is not the same and they raised the already high prices to boot. Stay away from the flowers. Spent $25.00 on a bouquet for my dining room and they were dead the next day. This is the 3rd time it happened and I felt something needed to be said. Stick to the guys by the PATH train for flowers that live at a fraction of the price. I hope they get their act together before it's too late. read more

I love this place for healthy goodies. Great good for you snacks, fruits veggies etc etc. 3 stars because: I picked up some of their guacamole. I carefully read the ingredients to make sure there was no oil. Began to eat it and oil started seeping out from certain areas of the container. I read the label again. No oil. I set it down for a while- picked it up after an hour. The entire top of it was now covered in oil. Gross. read more

I've done A&P and ShopRite, and while their prices are decent, there are some things that don't seem to ever go well - mainly fruits and vegetables. I love both of those things very much, and I feel I have wasted far too much money on them only to be vastly disappointed. So, I will walk to Aspen Marketplace for them because, despite the prices, everything is very, very good and very, very fresh. You know, apples aren't mealy, peaches that aren't mealy, nectarines that aren't...mealy. You get the point. For that extra $1 per pound I find myself enjoying the fruit I get, not angrily throwing it away several days later. The watermelon smells goooood (all the time) and the avocado aren't like lime green bricks. Aspen isn't the place to go to get a full week's worth of groceries, but is dynamite for fruit, vegetables, dairy, cold cuts, bread, and the salad and hot food bar. I like to be lazy sometimes and fill up a nice place of dinner food with chicken, veggies, a little pasta, maybe a meatball or two...but be careful, you could spend $20 or more without realizing it. Regardless -- fresh fruits and veggies, fresh cold cuts, fresh bread, etc. make it worth the money. (There are cheap options too -- For a cheap lunch, I suggest the turkey hero #3, with green apples, cheddar, and cranberry sauce. Comes with a free drink, $7 bucks. Boom.) Aspen is a mixed bag with mixed feelings with shopping here. The good: 1. Excellent and polite service 2. Great avocados and produce (lettuce, etc) in general 3. Well priced and tasty fruit tarte and cheesecake 4. Good butter (and varied) 5. Good humanely raised eggs 6. Fresh fairly priced farm raised salmon 7. Solid and varied and well priced bread The bad: 1. Olives are good but way too salty 2. The spreads don't seem fresh (threw one nondairy spread out recently) 3. No well priced ice cream: the Talenti is way overpriced compared with at other small markets in town or shop rite 4. Rice selection sucks and superbly overpriced ....I'll stick to my well priced 10lb bag of delicious Pari basmati rice I get in little India in JC for a fraction of the price and outstanding flavor and quality 5. The cold cuts are not fresh: grow mold in 3 days ESP the fancy organic brands (prob since less turn over) 6. Not much selection of grass fed beef or humanely raised chicken. Great supermarket with fresh produce, wide assortment of products, and even their own hot and cold buffet bar (by the pound). Some highlights are their deli counter, coffee beans dispenser, and a wide assortment of fresh cheeses and meats. Some areas of improvement would be the prices (a bit pricey for an okay supermarket), the employees at the registers are not the most friendly or cheerful (which is a real bummer to the experience), and the selection can be better! Their weekly manager sales and the convenience of being on Washington Street is a big plus so I don't mind returning! read more

I think Aspen is 3 star for some things and 4 stars for others. I recommend them for the fresh fruit and vegetables. They have a nice variety, plenty of organic, and some of the more exotic, seasonal items that you don't find in the supermarkets. The prices are good. I also like the olive bar, fresh, decent price, large variety. I visit the bread department for fresh Italian and French such as Balthazar and Calandra. At checkout, they have a nice selection of candies that are good when visiting friends. Other items, such as meats, cheeses, boxed/canned/jarred goods, fish, I usually buy at larger supermarkets for better pricing. They have prepared foods, but I'd prefer to buy fresh and make myself. read more

This was probably the worst experience I have had at the market in the past 7 years. It used to be a great store, but quite frankly with all the other options in town now, I won't be returning. Today I walked in to EXTREMELY offensive music being played (disgusting content, bad language). The limes were beyond sellable (turning brown and yellow) and only one cash register open. Once at checkout, the girl at the register sprayed cleaning spray all over my herbs. When I told her she did it, I did not get an apology but smart remarks, a bad attitude and her complaining about me to the girl who just showed up. I actually witnessed people walking out empty handed in disgust. Bad form to the employees and whoever was managing that day. They definitely lost some customers. read more

I've been to Aspen a few times in passing when I need to pick up something quick. The store is fairly large and seem to have a large selection of everything. I've picked up avocados and coffee beans from here. The avocados were at that perfect stage of ripeness to make guacamole so I was pretty happy. Most of the reviews I've read have been very negative so I'm kind of wary to make regular visits. I'll have to see for myself the next time I pick up groceries from Aspen. The few times I've been here, the lines are on the long side because they don't have many cashiers working. read more

Working in Hoboken is awesome for lunch because there are so many restaurants. Butttt sometimes you just want to have a small portion and not a full on meal for a good price. That's why Aspen Marketplace is great. They have a hot and cold food bar that is affordable with healthy food options from grilled chicken to korean bbq, varies day by day. They always have a great choices for their salad bar too. They also have already prepared wraps, sandwiches and sushi. Produce and other things are a bit pricier but you can't expect less because it's on Washington St and it's a speciality grocery store. If you are looking for a healthy, quick and easy food option this is the place to go. read more

I always find that aspen has a great produce selection, deli, and dry goods. It's a little pricey but we get the convenience of walking one block to get everything we need. What really makes the difference for us though is the staff! Ghania is so sweet to our little one, we look forward to visiting for that reason alone! I've shopped here for years - and I never seem to learn my lesson on their "fresh food". Simply put: Don't buy their produce. It's likely expired or about to turn. I just tried to eat some pre-cut cantaloupe and it tasted like vinegar. So disgusting. Their meat is on the border of expiring, and if you don't look closely (like I didn't today), you'll be buying old meat. Today alone I just threw out $20 worth of food because it was inedible. You know those people, those people who prefer their apples unblemished, their avocados at the peak of ripeness, and their baby kale organically grown and pre-rinsed three times, and they will spare no expense for such extravagances? They shop here. THOSE people. Those people like organic uncured duck bacon. And marcona almonds, even though it's like 8 bucks for 17 tiny, buttery, delectable nuts. And aged cheeses made from grass fed sheep's milk to pair with aforementioned almonds. Those people. I'm not like them, I swear, even if I buy all those things at this very location, along with wild caught fresh salmon, organic free trade dark chocolate, and these delightful prepared artichokes with spinach. I used to come here all the time when it was still Garden of Eden... and then it was put under new management and things/quality have gone downhill significantly. When it was GOE I never had an issue with any of the products there. Grabbing a sushi or a salad quickly on the way home was always a treat. Ever since it went under new management there have been issues and the most major one so far is the 6-day-long severe salmonella poisoning I have had. I ended up with it after eating, for dinner, one of Aspen's pre-packaged salads they make in the mornings. 5 hours later I was sick. The next morning I was in the ER... it's been 6 days and I am STILL sick from this. I've called the manager and he seemed very uncaring so I went in a few days after first becoming ill to meet the manager... again very uncaring. This is the last time I purchase anything from Aspen. I miss the old managers who treated this grocery space with the cleanliness it needs. read more

Stopped in to purchase some flowers to take while visiting at someone's house. Never arrive empty handed is always my moto. I selected the flowers outside and went in to pay and was impressed by this market. They had a lot of specialty items and if I lived in this neighborhood I could see myself frequenting this place. It is a bit pricey but, they do carry higher quality items and you are paying for convenience. The line moved swiftly and I was out the door before I knew it. The parking can be a bit of a nightmare on the street but, that seems to be a common issue in this city. read more

So I sat here and I did some crazy Yelp math on this review, subtracting a star here, adding a star there, and I came up with 2 and a half, which I rounded to three. 4-5 stars for the selection: They have a great variety of items, but that selection is unfortunately, less than reliable. Or maybe they just move things around too often, but what you get one day, you can't always expect to get the next. A solid 5 stars for quality - this needs no explanation. 3 stars for the hot food/salad bar - again, the selection is less than reliable, and they just don't have a good option for a basic salad. Plain greens(not spinach) maybe some shredded cheese and croutons, where are these things?- they have all kinds of fancy add ons, but no basics. And the kicker is this - ONE star for the cashiers (note - the cashiers, NOT the actual in-store staff, since they've all been helpful and pleasant) I read over my reviews and it occurs to me that most of my 1 star reviews have been based on customer service, and this 3 star review is sort of the exception because it's a decent enough store. When it comes to the cashiers: you ARE interrupting their conversations, they DO NOT want to help you, and they certainly do not want you to have a nice day. I had started to make a habit of stopping in but now, I actually dread going in there in the mornings, because I can already anticipate the attitude from the cashiers and I just don't want to deal with it that early. They are constantly getting in fresh produce and despite their small size, they always have a decent variety. The workers are helpful and friendly. Whenever I am looking for something and can't find it, they will scour the store. They have a great selection of fresh meat & wild caught fish as well. I'd say the prices are comparable to other "high end" or local groceries. I just find it extremely convenient because it's so close to my apartment. They have a nice selection of wild caught seafood, fresh meats and organic produce. The prices of the seafood is pretty comparable to what you see in a regular grocery store. I love their bars. They have a great salad and olive bar. The hot food bar is ok, but I am not generally a fan of them to begin with. They have a whole section of cheeses which I love, and a pre-made food section where they have freshly prepared food to take home. They open at 7 am and don't close till 10 pm, which makes is super convenient to shop there. Also, I always see them turning over the produce. OK, I'm going to be a little hard on Aspen, but they're supposedly a gourmet food shop so they should be held to a higher standard. The problem is the quality of each department varies enormously. For instance, the produce section is one of the best in Hoboken. Not particularly cheap, but very good. Fresh, beautifully displayed, and offering a lot of variety. Then you have the meat department which, in my opinion, is one of the worst in Hoboken. Half of the tiny department is made up of meat (particularly chicken) that is priced very cheaply, but much of it is unmarked. (The outside packaging is loosely wrapped and sticky. Really gross.) In this day and age that's something unacceptable. You have no idea where, who or how they raised these animals. You have organic options, but they are enormously overpriced. The people on hand to help aren't knowledgeable and the displayed meats and fish aren't very good. All in all, very very bad. Then you have the deli and preprepared foods. Variety is limited and it's expensive. The quality is average to poor and the knowledge and friendliness of the people behind the counter is generally lacking. A mess. The cheese section, however, is pretty good. The Italian dry cheeses are, yes, overpriced. The bread section -- not very good. The breads that are offered are boring and average even though the selection is quite large. It seems to me they are simply getting good deals from suppliers and so they stock their shelves with mediocre product. (Better to go around the corner to Choc O Pain Bakery -- extremely good bread.) The cakes and desserts on hand also look fine but are of poor quality and not worth the effort or the expense. The staff, on the other hand, are generally very pleasant and very helpful. Not particularly knowledgeable, but that's OK. The bottom line is this place could be so much better and just isn't very good. read more

I do most of my food shopping here. They have a good balance of affordable products and organic food. They generally have a good supply of organic chicken breast, beef cuts, and ground meats. The deli section is supple. They have an amazing (but pricey) cheese section. The produce section is always well stocked. I appreciate their fresh breads and large nut selection. Things can be a little hard to find in this tightly packed niche store. Don't be scared to ask the produce guys where stuff is. They are all SUPER friendly and helpful. Pro Tip: If there is no one in the meat dept (which often happens), don't be shy about asking some one in deli or produce to find the meat people. This place may not be the best spot for large packages of paper towels or obscure foods, but their staple products always seem fresh and available. read more

I'm giving 2 stars because I'm in a good mood. The cashiers are probably the rudest human beings alive. If you do not like your job, simply quit. Additionally, my partner and I went in to grab a quick snack. So, we browsed through the yogurt section and all the yogurt was warm. I do not mean just not as cold as it could be but genuinely room temperature. We decided to take a chance and purchase them anyway only to take one spoon full and throw it away. We did not even bother to go get a refund, the hassle was not worth dealing with rude cashiers again. If the transaction was more pleasant, I would come back more frequently. On the plus side, they did have the white chocolate bar with the Rice Krispies that I have been searching for in the past few months. read more

Really surprised with the amount of negative reviews here regarding quality and freshness of produce, meats, etc. I've been living in downtown Hoboken for 7 years now and I won't lie, since I have a car I definitely use Trader Joe's as my go-to grocery store for bulk buying - the prices and quality are excellent there. But for a quick stop every now and then when I'm tight on time and am running errands downtown, this place does the trick. I really enjoy Aspen Market's variety, extensive fruit and vegetable section, and I frequently purchase meats and seafood as well - NEVER have had an issue with freshness. What could improve of course, are the prices. Insanely expensive - buying say 10 items from this place I easily spend $80, whereas If I were to buy the same from Trader Joe's, I'd spend $20. Hence why I'll only stop here if I REALLY have to. Likewise considering I only buy items I'd be immediately cooking, I guess in fairness to everyone else's issues with quality, I'm not bulk buying - hence haven't dealt with questionable expiration dates, food going bad quickly, etc. On the customer service side, I agree with everyone who has remarked on the employees' negative attitudes. The cashiers could at least TRY to act upbeat; I recently waited in line for 15 mins (the place was packed) and there were only two cashiers working - fine - but when I finally got to my cashier, she then told me she couldn't accept cash payments as her draw had no change. When I paid with my credit card, her register froze and she acted as though it was my fault. All in all, for variety and quality I enjoy shopping here, but maybe once every other month due to the unreasonably inflated prices. read more
