I've been coming to the Hudson Greene Market here and there since 2016. Usually around lunch, I would pick up a soup or salad or one of their premade items and everything has always been pretty good and fresh. I have no complaints. So recently, I was having a luncheon at work for 16 people and the place that I usually order from failed me. I found out that Hudson Green does catering and I decided to give their catering department a try. I have to say that the food was really, really good. I placed an order for the creamy mashed potatoes, the skirt steak, the chicken marsala, and the cavatelli with broccoli. Everything was very good and everyone enjoyed the food. For the meat eaters, the skirt steak was a hit. For those that preferred chicken, they raved about the chicken Marsala. The mashed potatoes were a hit as well. None was left. I plan to order from there again and hopefully they do not disappoint. read more

During my recent stay in New Jersey, I was able to visit and frequent some new places. I particularly enjoyed walking the streets of downtown Jersey City and its waterfront; there I discovered Hudson Greene Market. This store located on Hudson Street, near Exchange Place, is a perfect place to pick up a meal to enjoy sitting on any of the benches or tables on the waterfront. Their hot buffet is a gourmet experience! Great choices at affordable prices! The dishes vary on a daily basis. Their sandwiches are amazing! I loved their Reuben and Bahn Mi! Yumm! I did not get to try their soups but they looked and smelled amazing! Along with the fresh food, you can also enjoy from the varieties of drinks, fresh juices to premium organic teas... The store offers healthy, organic and sustainable items that can be found in every department. I got to buy fresh organic fruits, breads, and sausages to take home. Been working in the area for almost two years, and before I leave I wanted to share some love with this market. This is my go-to for the lunch specials. With so much variety, I have to laugh at how often I circle the store. If you get the membership, it's a nice feeling to get some money off for good food. Why 4 stars? Because sometimes it can be a little inconsistent. One of my favorites that they've sadly phased out was their or spicy dried squid. Put that with some instant white rice and some of their chicken - you're set for the day. The hot food is worth it, the plates were FANTASTIC (if the rice wasn't glued to the bottom on a weird instance lol) the new bagel station is great, but I would love it if I could walk in and just get exactly what I know they always have. For instance, their teriyaki salmon is always good and always available. Also, most of the employees are such a joy, I have two favorite cashiers that always welcome me with a warm smile! I had a surprisingly uncomfortable encounter with a cashier today, and will not return here, period. After I paid for my order, and was finishing bagging my items, the cashier very audibly leaned over to her colleague next to her and said about my order: "Jesus Christ! $99 for sixteen items!" While I did not respond to her rudeness, it made me quite uncomfortable and starkly embarrassed me. I try to live a conservative lifestyle, and am far from wealthy, but I do like to splurge a bit on cooking ingredients. However, this cashier made me feel as though my choices were foolish, and that is a terrible feeling on my one afternoon off of the week. I don't need to be price-shamed at my grocery store. So, go in the back and find the magical hot box. In the mornings it is filled with BECs, and I promise you, they are the best around. You see, when kept hot, the cheese, meat and egg transform into something magical and otherworldly. I was devastated when I went the other day and they had run out. . . Note to self arrive before 10:30 AM. My pick? Turkey Egg and Cheese on a roll. Otherwise, it's a kind of bougee grocery store. There's a fresh salad station with an impressive selection - everything from radishes to tuna, sesame sticks, the whole fam is here. Hot bar has some decent options before the finance lunch crowd cherry picks it. Early bird gets the worm here, fa sho. You can easily find all your staple items here, just be aware there is not a huge selection and almost no national brands. Most items are organic versions and priced slightly higher though not too crazy. I love that half of this store is dedicated to fresh items, like deli, produce, service foods. This is my go to for things that run out and don't want to go to ShopRite or TJs..this is your place to go..but don't forget the convenience and location you do pay for. Luckily i did go Super Bowl Sunday and avocados were 5 for $5 and mushrooms were comparable to what I pay at Shop Rite but other items are expensive such as cheeses and deli meats. But for most part produce is reasonable if not organic like all things considered. Haven't tried other items yet like coffee or hot bar. But key is to sign up for membership online and:or download the app or check website and you can check the stock online ahead of time if you are going fro a particular item so you don't waste your time. read more

Good place to grab a bite for lunch. It's close to 30 hudson (if you work in the area) so I swung by to get a sandwich. You tell them what number and type of bread you want. Pay and then wait for you number to be called. They have sushi, made to order salads, etc. Pretty large selection. There is a coffee shop right next door as well. read more

I don't expect this area to have anything cheap. I don't expect there to be much variety either given that there only exist small, compact stores. With this in mind, I was still disappointed, and for pretty simple reasons too. Everything was more expensive than expected, and I feel like my expectations were fairly reasonable. I couldn't justify buying more than two avocados since they were $3 a pop. If it weren't for my silly millennial frontal lobe, I probably would have steered away immediately. I know what you're thinking - why one star? Well my $3 avocado was rotten. I had come home immediately afterwards, split that bad boy open, and saw that it was indeed a bad boy. Good quality gourmet and prepared foods. Mostly friendly staff. Pricey, but to be expected in this 5 minutes from Manhattan (one stop on PATH) waterfront neighborhood. As the only market in Exchange Place area, I wonder what will happen when Whole Foods opens here in 2022. What will Hudson Greene do to keep customers coming in? Seems like they may need to lower prices a bit, offer more specialized and ethnic foods, and/or increase the awards in their frequent shopper program. I'm surprised the ratings aren't higher for this place, been going over a year now and absolutely love what they're doing. 1. They have the best pre made sushi I've ever had, I suppose that's because it's not really "pre made", I think around 11 they start freshly making it and are pretty much doing so through 1. It's 1 day shelf life meaning this is made fresh every day and it's high restaurant quality (highest reco there). 2. Very good breakfast options, great bagels, my friends visiting have always been amazed 3. They continue to get better, aren't complacent, they've added a coffee spot (not a coffee drinker but my wife is happy w it) and the store is continuously making tweaks 4. Service is excellent, never once had a problem, they're all very polite and helpful, it makes me want to spend there 5. Fresh produce, amazing assortment, they're not a shoprite as far as assortment and they skew healthier--think Whole Foods, love their single serve drink options as they clearly curate selection in great detail for trends Prices are prices you'd expect for a local market w high quality food--probably a bit better. Located pretty close to the "Exchange Place" path station, this place probably enjoys the luxury of being the only market place in Paulus Hook area. There's a Deli and a cafe located within this place, both of which are admirable. However, the grocery is massively massively [and I could say that 3 times in a row] overpriced. They do have a membership account where they refund you 20$ for every 400$ you spend and you'd be amazed at how fast you can reach 400$ while shopping at this place. None the less, I'd still like to call out that it's very clean and well maintained with a ton of organic options and outdoor seating as well if you're looking for a quick meal. read more

I have been going here for 4 years so I agree with many of the positive and negative reviews posted. Shoprite produce goes bad on the ride home. Finding good quality food and produce at Acme is not realistic. The downtown pharmacy is trying to provide competition, but when it comes to food it lags behind. I agree that they are many times out of stock of numerous staples (I.e. oatmeal, spinach, bread - in my experience), but the selection for a small grocery and the level of food is excellent. I have never eaten lunch here, but colleagues of mine say it is excellent. I think they have a good rewards program - for every 400 spent you get 20 back (5% in this neighborhood is not terrible). The staff, aside from a few who can't be bothered, look and answer questions with effort. For a small store you can find almost anything. This isn't a store for toiletries and medicine (Downtown pharmacy is a better choice), but for everyday healthy eating it's a good bet. read more

4 stars because of convenience and tastiness. I do a big grocery shop at a different store, but always pop in here if I need little bits or run out of everything. I also love grabbing lunch from here-the sushi is phenomenal. I do think there's a good assortment of food. More than you would get at a deli-such as scallops and other fish, meat, and a lot of dry food. However, the stock has been really bad lately. Went in the other day for lettuce and was stuck with very limited options. Went in yesterday for sour cream had had NO options. As in they were literally sold out of all the sour cream. So seems like hit or miss. Might have something to do with COVID etc. Taking really good covid measures and limiting how many people in store. read more

I have to update my review on this place. Their made to order salads are great. They have improved the salad dressing selection and their vegetables are fresh and good. Their arugula is very delicious. They only negative is that they consider croutons a topping, most made to order salad places do not count croutons and it seems petty. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I decided to start off 2017 with a trip to this local grocery store. When I arrived, I found it to be well stocked and full of employees caring for the shelves. We had ample time to shop around and gather a few items needed to recover from a NYE celebration unlike any other. Here is a rundown.... You can get anything from beeswax natural wax candles to Eco-friendly washing detergent. The options seem limitless, considering the independent vibe they give. I appreciated seeing a lot of employees working and keeping everything in order. The space was very clean and they had a bakery full of fresh items like peanut butter cheesecake slices and Oreo cakes. At checkout, I will say they have some opportunities. The guy working had a long line but never called for backup. We have more important things to do than wait in a line to get milk and bread. Also, he asked if we had a membership with them, and when we answered NO and asked how we could get one, he called a manager over to setup an account. The manager obviously didn't want to setup our membership account and told us he would only accept memberships via their website. That is NOT the way to run a business. When someone is considering making a commitment to your shopping establishment, you should go out of your way to make sure they are able to easily gain membership and are not merely dismissed to an online platform. I could get Amazon Pantry shipped directly to my front door, why would I patronize a local business when conveniences like that exist? I will tell you why...Great Customer Service, sadly this wasn't the case on this instance. So, we will give them one more chance to wow us with their customer service since we appreciated their attention to detail with their merchandise. They have a decent selection here of fresh, frozen, bakery, and packaged foods. They also have a counter for made-to-order salads, sandwiches, and a buffet setup if you come for lunch. It is a good choice for lunch, the food always looks good and the line usually moves quickly. Their soups are very well done as well. I can usually find something to eat here, or if I need one or two ingredients to cook I can snag them here, so why the 2 stars? The prices. I have never seen a place with higher prices than here - think $8 for cauliflower that you can buy for $3 anywhere else. They have a good amount of specialty and niche items that you perhaps couldn't find elsewhere, but the prices are just too steep for it to make sense to shop here regularly. read more

Hudson Greene's produce is always fresh - which is of paramount importance. I'm surprised to see the reviews say otherwise. I guess I've either been lucky, or they've stepped their game up. They also have a killer grocery selection. All the yuppie staples I love, plus obscure shit I haven't seen. I try to be on my A-game...you know, Baby D style... "fat bitch know about all the new snacks before they even hit the streets...all the bootleg snacks....the year 2000 snacks." Keeping me on my toes. I love the staff. I had such high hopes, I run by here all the time and always take a peek into the well lit store, and catch people in mid-bite sitting by the windows. When it came time for me to do some grocery shopping, I was seriously disappointed. They didn't have anything I needed as part of a recipe I was trying, white truffle honey i can understand, but not even plain old walnuts! I did buy some bread and olive oil as I was running low, but that costs a fortune, I understand the convenience of it being in an apartment building, but I felt i was seriously robbed. Scores points for convenience, and they do have a decent selection of organic and natural foods, but that's about it. It's the only sizeable market (sizeable being a relative term) within walking distance to home. It is worth walking past the few corner convenience stores end route to Hudson Greene when I need milk or eggs in a pinch, since the only places I have ever seen who charge more for milk and eggs are the few corner stores between home and Hudson Green Market... In general, I find Hudson Green is overly expensive and totally takes advantage of their location and lack of competition in the area. Given the number of new buildings going up in Downtown JC, I really hope a new supermarket moves in to the ground floor of one of them... We waited quite a while for this new store to open up and feared that it never would. We happened to find out it had opened by accident - I'm not sure why, but there didn't seem to be much (any?) advertising over its opening. It's run by the same folks that run the Downtown Pharmacy store over on Essex, just two blocks away. Compared to ShopRite or Morton Williams, I feel it's pricey - but I guess you have to pay for the convenience factor. If you look at the brands sold here, many are imported or higher end - which would lead to the higher pricing. No fresh seafood (that I've seen) save for a few items in the deli section that have already been prepared as well as lox. Produce is reasonably priced and the selection is OK - probably on the meager side. Winter is about a week and a half away so I shouldn't be surprised that the tomatoes (everywhere) appear anemic. Everything else seemed to be fine though. I was a bit peeved that my other half put in two Amy's veggie items in our cart - when we got home I saw that they were $6/each. A bit spendy for frozen food. There is a hot food bad that is slightly less than $7/lb for a selection of hot and cold items. The market down the street on the corner has a similar bar, but you'll find less Asian influenced foods here. Instead you'll find things like stuffed cabbages or ribs on the hot bar here. They do have more gluten-free foods than you'd find in most smaller grocers, which is something that I appreciate. there are lots of organic / natural offerings in just about every food category. They will also order things that you would like but aren't carried - very willing to accommodate customers. Very polite staff. I do wish that there were more things to "make", like fresh fish, and that there were a few more items in the produce section. One drawback is that there is no convenient street parking, yet. Hopefully they'll work something out with the lot next door or the city so that we don't have to continue to park illegally across the street each time we go to the market. read more

If you want to drastically increase your carbon footprint, shop here! As someone who just moved here from Seattle, this market is quite the (horrible) culture shock. Everyone who shops here seems to be boycotting the canvas bag movement. You practically have to fight the cashiers to not give you a thick, plastic bag that will end up floating around in the ocean. There seems to be no return program for the glass jars that can be purchased here, either. The food items that can be purchased in the deli area are subpar to flat-out gross (I've had better "sushi" rolls in a community college cafe)... Pretty much the quality I'd expect from a large grocery store chain. The bakery stuff is absolutely disgusting. Most of the lunchtime buffet foodstuff (M-Fri) is edible. The items in the store are greenwashed garbage that appeal to rich idiots who slept through a freshman 101 science course. The owner put more effort into aesthetics than stocking their store with quality items. The prices are what I'd expect to pay in a co-op with fresher, local items. TL;DR: environmentally unfriendly and the deli/bakery is overpriced trash. The lunchtime buffet for the office crowd is decent, though. read more
