I took it in and the service was great and turn around was awesome. Probably helped I went in at end of academic year but would definitely go back again. read more

I went to get my left gear shift repaired because it completely broke, and not only did I not get the same brand like I was shown and told I would, I also am now gripless for whatever reason. And less of a big deal but my seat didn't get tightened even though I was told they could, but whatever. I wouldn't have minded getting a different brand for my gear shift as long as I had just been told "Hey, by the way we ran out of X brand so we have to use Y brand." I was expecting the same brand shifter because two different people had verbatim told me, "Let me double check we have that shift in stock." And had shown it to me, twice. I also for some reason have lost my right grip even though it was NOT broken and had NO reason to be taken off. The girl who gave me back my bike very confidently said, "Obviously, you're missing a grip but we have some if you're interested in buying." I did check out the grips because I would like to have one and assumed that was just gonna have to be one more thing I had to pay for since I know absolutely nothing about bikes at ALL, but I was not able to purchase one because I was 30 minutes late to my shift already, and when I asked what had happened to it they acted like it was broken and "must've slipped off". There was literally NO way on Earth it would have slipped off, because it had slipped less than an inch in the beginning of winter quarter and both me and three of my friends have since been unable to push it back on. I literally showed the person a picture of my bike on the stand inside the bike barn ON the day I brought it in, and her response was "Well you can't clearly tell the state of the grip." You can tell that it was on!! It wasn't pristine by any means, but it wasn't easy to slip on or out, and the person helping me even told me this because she mentioned that she needed a specialized air pressure gun to take my other grip off! I am just so confused. It's not easy for me to pay for stuff, even necessities, because I am living off of my savings and cannot legally work in the United States. Ten dollars isn't a lot, but it is for me. And I don't understand why I need to pay for a grip that was PERFECTLY fine and did the job it needed to do when it was the Bike Barn's fault that it got lost/stolen/broken! I also believe the person helping me changed her demeanor when I mentioned I was gonna use my dad's card since I forgot my pin to my card, after that she completely brushed off the concerns that I didn't have a grip and that it must've been broken in the first place and that it wasn't their fault and to just buy another one. And not that it's anyone's business, but the only reason I needed my dad's card was because I knew he would know his pin number. For some of us, its either a bike gets fixed or a bill gets paid. It was very demeaning and belittling to be treated differently for asking someone for money, especially when it didn't have anything to do with the service being provided!!! I didn't know I had to take a 360 video of my bike, get the names of everyone helping me, and take photos of my receipt before coming here, because otherwise I would have. Didn't realize putting my bike in your guys' hands meant I couldn't trust you guys to be transparent with the bike! I wasn't even able to keep my quote receipt since the girl helping me just took it from me. I didn't even get to have the names of the four people that helped me with my bike on Friday and also on Tuesday. You guys are friendly, but you are not kind and you are not honest, and not even convenient! What even is the point of offering services at that point other than to get broke college students' money?? If you can afford to go ANYWHERE else in Davis, I would recommend you look someplace else where they'll offer a better and more honest service :( read more

Left my bike to fix a spoke. It's my daily bike so I know how it moves and it's every clicks. They fixed the spoke but my bike started making noises when I paddle. Fixed one problem and gave it another one. Never going here again. read more

I had a quite unpleasant experience with this place. I repaired my bike here and was charged 71.19 dollars altogether for labor and a new bike derailleur. I got a call on Dec. 5th from the bike barn, saying that my bike was ready. I paid my money and took my bike away on Dec. 6th, 2019. Then I discovered that the bike made loud noise and was not working properly. I wanted to take it back for check but Bike Barn was closed during the winter break. Urgently needing to use my bike to get around in Davis, I managed to fix it at another bike shop and was told that the new derailleur they sold to me was not compatible with my bike. When I went back to the Bike Barn asking for a refund, I was told that it was not possible because I did not keep my receipt. After I insisted and I managed to find the bank record that showed that I was charged by them for the repair and the new part, and they also found my record in their card deck, I was refunded 58.32 dollars for everything, which was fair enough to me. But overall the experience is less than satisfying, and I found the staff whom I talked to was able to stick to rules very well but seemed to be not very understanding of my specific situation. While I understand the bike barn's policy and acknowledge my own negligence in the whole process, my lesson from this is for everyone to keep their receipt till they are sure that their bike is working. read more

The bike barn is not the place to go if you need repairs for your bike. I went there to get an inner tube replacement and I was told that the repair would take a week and costed $20. For a simple task that takes 5-10 minutes it could've been done a lot faster. The repair did not last long, when I went to pump up by bike tire, I found that there was no air being filled and air was being expelled. So, I took my bike to a different shop to find out what was wrong. Long story, short it was a problem with the inner tube that the bike barn "fixed". Do not go here unless you want to wait forever and get ripped off. read more

Lucas (manager) was amazing! I went in initially just to get more information and ask questions about replacing my bike chain as it was old and rusty. I had the intentions on doing so my self but wanted insight on what materials I would need. Lucas was very knowledgeable and sold me on getting my bike repaired there as they had an opening. I thought the pricing was reasonable ($12 for chain, $15 for labor) it was less than what I would have had to pay for the materials to do the job & didn't have to worry about the hassle. They are located on campus and right next to the Silo. Very convenient for students to get their bike checked out or fixed while they're on their lunch break. The staff here are extremely helpful and do not overcharge you with extraneous fees. The staff here are mainly students hence the name ASUCD (Associated Students of UCD). They are extremely helpful and eager to help fix bikes and do not mind getting their hands dirty. There are many times where they've helped students fix simple things such as brake shift, small installation accessories and grease your bike chain. I have gone here for the past four years and have never encountered a problem. I had to get my wheels trued a couple of times and they always had it done on the promised date. The staff recommends that you take your Ulock with you as it may get lost as they are moving your bike around. They also offer service plans for students to take advantage of their labor plans. I bought the basic service plan which offers unlimited labor parts for three years. I really enjoy the service provided by these hardworking students. Make sure you leave a tip for them as they work extra hard to get all students their bike back as soon as possible. Btw, I knocked off one star because of the overpriced items. You might assume a bike shop on the most bicycle-friendly campus in the country would be, you know, affordable for students, or maybe just reasonably well run. In the case of ASUCD Bike Barn, you'd be wrong, wrong, wrong. Preposterous prices for flat repairs. Laughably fictional repair times quoted to students who have few other easy options. Sketchy talk of "other repairs" needed on a bike that was 100 percent dialed in and tuned by actual repair professionals. When they did the wildly overpriced flat repair, they used a tube from, I don't know what, a tractor? This thing has a valve stem as long as your index finger. Is it too much to ask that a repair at double the going rate might at least by halfway well done? Apparently so. If you can get your bike into town, Aggies, you've got a sporting chance of a decent repair by avoiding this dodgy, amateur-hour production. If you can't, it might be time to learn basic repairs yourself. This clown show is one to skip. read more

WARNING: DO NOT BUY OR REPAIR YOUR BIKE HERE Ordered a bike a week before school started. They said it would be done by Sunday on the first week. Went in to check on it and they said I had to wait another 2 weeks! Eventually when I got the bike, it was the wrong color. Nothing they could really do about that. Two days after riding the bike, the break caliper explodes off the bike and the bike begins to make a rattling noise. They did not pay attention to the bike when they built it and it shows because parts are now falling off of it. Update: A few days after I got the bike, I noticed the fenders were bent and not straight. They obviously did not assemble it correctly. Update 2: Got into my first bike accident and I needed my wheel to be true. I came here and they did the work. A day later, I noticed the wheel was still bent and wobbling. Absolutely horrible place to get your bike fixed. read more

I have always had a good experience with the bike barn. It is close to the school, very convenient, and the price is reasonable. But recently I've been completely disappointed with them. I changed the rear tire three times in half a quarter. The first time was because both the front and rear inner tubes were leaking, so I had to replace both inner tubes for a total of $40. I also asked them if there was a crack in my outer tire that caused the tire leak, and they said there was nothing wrong with my outer tire. Less than two weeks later, my rear inner tube leaked again. They said it might be due to their installation problem, and they also helped me clean the inside of my tire to prevent small stones from puncturing my inner tube. They also told me there was no problem with my tires. This time they only charged me $10 for the tube fee and no labor fee because they said it might be their installation problem. The service has been very attentive and consistent with my impression of bike barns. But less than two months later, my rear inner tube leaked again. I felt that there must be something wrong with my rear tire, but this time the cashier gave me a very bad attitude. When she gave me the bill for $20, I asked her should I pay the full price? I just changed the inner tube here two weeks ago, and this is the third time I have changed the inner tube here this quarter this is not normal. She slammed the table and said she was going to ask the mechanic and then came back and told me they had no problem, so I had to pay the full price, I said ok, and then I asked them what caused my inner tube to leak again and again. They said there was no problem with the outer tire, and they didn't find any cracks on the inner tube, but they replaced the inner tube for me for safety concern. I didn't even know if my inner tube was good or bad, and they just replaced it for me. It was even possible that the inner tube was fine, but they still replaced it for me and charged me the full price. So in the end I still didn't know why my tire went flat and I had changed the inner tube 3 times in half a quarter. This overturned my previous understanding of them. I felt that they were unreliable and I no longer want to trust them. I will probably find a place outside the school for repairs in the future. read more

Went in and told one of the guys what I needed done and it was completed after the weekend. He even gave me a free screen that came off my bike. The cost of labor seems to be high for jobs that seem easy (re-taping, new brakes), but I suppose convenience charges are high. It can take awhile to be talked to as it seems they usually have just one person in the front, and tend not to call for assistance from the back. I'm beyond frustrated with the bike barn. When I did a huge repair, they ended up taking on additional costs to the repair WITHOUT letting me know in advance about the updates to the repair charges/costs. I gave them the benefit of the doubt to fix the issue and letting them know as I was dropping off my bike for another repair to call me and let me know if any changes to charges/costs are made (made it super clear to them). Well, they messed up again and ended up doing the exact same thing. Now I'm going to be exploring places elsewhere and having bike barn be my absolute last resort. Only good things for the barn is that it's on campus and staff was able to help me take off the extra charges but this really needs to be fixed asap as this will make other students frustrated/upset. read more

I don't personally recommend to repair or purchase your bike here because the cost is way too high for college students. However, some of their services are free, such as pumping or lowering your seat. On top of that, most of the mechanic students there are just so helpful and friendly. Yesterday evening, I was biking around campus with my friend, and my chain fell off when I changed the gear. As we were trying to figuring out how to put it back on, a female student, who was biking pass by us, stopped and offered to help me out. Literally not even 5 seconds later, my chain was fixed. When we had to drop off our bikes before their store opened the next day, an employee arrived early to take our bikes. They're super nice! They repaired my bike a few times, and they often throw in free repairs. Like today, they fixed my kickstand for free! And they fixed one of my brakes (very minor problem with it) for free too a while ago! It is a little pricey, and I feel like repairs could be a little cheaper, but it's cheaper than downtown. Overall I'd recommend going somewhere else since it's so expensive here. My experiences are mixed since a few employees were sweet and friendly, but one of the workers stood behind the computer clicking on Facebook while a line piled up and told me off for "trying to cut the line" when I tried to ask her a quick question. She then kept browsing Facebook. I asked a different employee who was actually busy and she took the 3 seconds to help me, so that bih of a cashier can choke. Service, after getting through the wait times and long line, depends on the worker. Had someone tell me the reason my bike was so slow was because the pedal needed to be tightened, which made as much sense as saying the seat should be replaced. Seemed like he just saw the first nonrelated minor aesthetic issue and decided to try and charge me for that when it didn't address my problem at all. Turned out I just needed to wash dried dirt off my tires. read more

tl;dr: Bad communication, didn't follow through on repair promise, didn't take ownership of their mistakes. I came in to have my hydraulic brake repaired. I was told their "brake guy" wouldn't be in the shop until a week later to fix it. Okay, sure, I can wait a week; I still had some brake pressure so it wasn't dangerous to ride or anything. I scheduled an appointment and rearranged my schedule to make it work. A day or two later, I got a voicemail asking me to call back with the name of the brake manufacturer so they could order the necessary parts for it. I called back a few hours later to give the information, and was asked, "So is this to replace the brake pedal?" No, I said, the hydraulic pressure is just weak, like I said when I dropped it off. "Oh, okay, we'll have everything ready for you when you bring in your bike as scheduled." Great. I had to rearrange my schedule that day to make it work so I could drive into campus and drop my bike off that morning. When I came to drop my bike off, they could not find my paperwork. The same guy who took my appointment asked, "What is this repair for?" I explained -- again -- that it was to fix the hydraulic brake pressure. "Oh yeah! I remember you now. Okay, I kept your paperwork in this separate pile. Okay, you're good to go!" Great. I got a call about 30 minutes later. He asked, "What is wrong with the bike? Why are you dropping it off?" I explained -- AGAIN -- that I needed the hydraulic brake pressure restored. "Okay, thank you." I got another call 2 hours later. They bled the brake and -- oops -- they don't have the part they needed to fix it. So they have to order it, and they won't have it in stock until next week. In the meantime, they bled my brake fluid completely so it's now unusable and unsafe to ride on. When I asked why they bled the brake when they didn't have the part, he said, "We couldn't have known if we'd be able to fix it until we bled the brake." Are you serious?!? If that's true, you probably should have ordered the part you need BEFORE you bled out all the brake fluid. Anyway, I couldn't wait 6-7 more days for this, so I took the bike back and drove it across town to another bike shop where they said they could fix it in 24 hours. Great! I'll never go back to Bike Barn and I recommend you do the same. I get that this place employs mostly under-experienced student employees working part-time, but this is just unacceptable. read more

Regarding their selection of bike locks and bike accessories, this place is pretty good! Not the best, but you'll probably find what you need. As for bike repairs, I've had good experiences! They can do minor fixes like adjusting the seat height quickly and for free. I needed my front tire to be put on correctly after my friend had attempted to do so (but failed in setting up the brakes correctly). They also did that quickly and for free! read more

Half a star for the compliments I get on my bike and half a star for the cool "local skate shop" vibe it gives when you go visit. One star for location. That's about all Bike Barn is good for. Go to Bike Barn if: 1. You want to be treated like you're waiting in line for the deli shop (long wait + they rush you) 2. You want to wait hours for a simple task 3. You don't care about the quality of the parts they throw on to your bike Frankly, I'm sick and tired of this place. I've been here 3 times and it gets worse every time I go. With Bike Barn, i am the exact definition of insane. I always go in expecting great service but I always leave disappointed. My last visit was the worst and here is the email I sent them: "To whom it may concern: I am writing this evening to explain my distaste for Bike Barn. Not even a week ago, I came into Bike Barn right when it opened because I had ran over a rusty nail causing a flat in my rear tire. He said it wouldn't take long so I waited around school... I ended up getting the call 30 mins before the shop closed. This is not the reason of my message - after the $40 repair, I take the bike home fine. I take it once more to school the next day fine. I leave for the weekend and I keep my bike inside my apartment so nothing funny can happen to it. I come back from the holiday and I ride it to school and half way home, for a total of 4.5 trips which is roughly just 45 minutes of total ride time before the same wheel that was replaced was flat once again. I walk to Freewheelers bike shop from the UMall and they told me that the protectant the Bike Barn put on the tube was not great quality and it just burst open a new hole. This has happened to me once before from Bike Barn but a second time is unacceptable. $40 tire repair with subpar service will not go unnoticed to a college student who has enough expenses to handle. I would like to get a form of refund due to the burden this facility has caused me. Please contact me with any questions and I look forward to hearing from Bike Barn soon. Thank you." Went to my favorite bike shop Freewheelers on F and 2nd (shameless plug) where they got me up and running in 30 minutes as compared to the 6 hours Bike Barn took. I've been to the Bike Barn a few times, but today is the first time I've had to pay for service. The staff is nice and they help troubleshoot many things for free, and they respect our decisions and don't try to push for extra services that we may not need. The location is conveniently located on campus. I can't vouch for how well they fix things because I still have yet to see the results (maybe I will modify this review when I do), but this place does save a lot of time and trouble, and I'm very glad that it is around. read more

Very friendly, knowledgable, and efficient. Usually same day turn around and will do a thorough spot inspection to recommend any additional repairs without implying you should simply spend more.
