Ken sells tire tubes 2 for the price of 1 at the end of the school year to reduce his inventory of faulty tubes. I bought four tubes, paid for two, and had four flat tires on my first ride out. At first, I thought it was my own faulty tire, so I had an employee at Ken's check it out. It was fine. When I gave Ken the opportunity to make things right, he said flatly, "There is nothing I can do, your tire is bad." When I showed him the receipt from his store the previous day, saying the tire was fine, he still stated there was nothing he could do. I will never use this store again. Let the buyer beware. TLDR don't bring your bike to Ken's unless you want to waste your time and be gaslit Brought my 1 year old bike into Ken's (which I bought from them) to get new disc brakes and for a mysterious clicking noise. They said it would take 2 days but on day 3 they called and "suggested they replace my breaks", which we had already discussed. Picked my bike up and the clicking noise was still there, and the brakes felt a little soft for new brakes. Brought the bike back in and a couple days later I picked it up. The click was gone but I didn't make it a block before the shop before noticing the brakes didn't stop the bike at all. Brought it back and took it home again. The click came back and the brakes were squealing. Brought it back before a 10 day trip and when I picked it up, the clicking was gone but they couldn't tell me why because all the notes were erased (very odd). Brakes were very loud but stopped. Brakes were driving me crazy from the sound so I took it to a different shop and they put on nicer pads. The brakes weren't loud when I bought it from Ken's so what happened there?? 3 months later and my brakes are screaming because the discs are contaminated. Turns out both brake mechanisms are leaking onto the discs contaminating them. Different shop asked me if someone bled my brakes. Who knows what Ken's did because they deleted their notes. Absolute nightmare. Hundreds of dollars down the drain and a $420 bike ahead of me. Have to scrap my bike because it's not worth the cost. read more

My bike had a flat tire in less than 2 months and less than 20 miles. Called to ask if there was a warranty, was told no. Not "We're sorry" or anything (reminds me when I bought the intertubes I had very disinterested "customer service"), just a very rude no. Ok, I asked for the Manager, "I am the manager", ok let me talk to your boss. He laughs at me "No." Are you serious? This is unacceptable, this is not how you treat a customer. You don't have warrentys on your products? "Sir it's a $9 ballon, we don't do warrentys on them. Happens all the time." So you knowingly sell a defective item? Cool! Came to check out a clearance gravel bike in my price range after shooting an e-mail to Ken to ask if the online inventory was accurate. It was! Ended up riding the bike I wanted (Specialized Diverge Sport) and one level up for comparison. No pressure to buy the more expensive bike and super knowledgable staff. Really appreciated them chatting about components and helping me decipher what options I really needed. The more expensive bike was a bit softer and smoother feeling, however for another $1k this is mostly a commuting bike for me and I don't need the quickest, nicest and lightest stuff to do the job. They definitely had the gamut of price ranges and tons of bikes to look at on the floor. I would definitely recommend this place, they were busy on a weekday after 5pm so come prepared with questions and they'll be happy to swirl around ideas and colors and options. As a lady I definitely felt welcome and saw that they truly treat all customers equally- I saw kiddos, a younger college roadie and all kinds of folks in the store shopping while I was there. It'd been a few years since I'd been skiing and the number of locations to service ski equipment around here is lacking at best. Also, over those years I'd misplaced my ski boots (probably going to find those eventually) but I did have skis. So I went to Ken's with my waxed planks and they fit me with rental boots. They were also willing to size my bindings to the boots. Depending on brand of bindings, adjustments can range from 1-screw-easy-as-pie (Look) to disassemble, adjust and reassemble (Tyrolia). As I'd had the one screw adjustment bindings, they actually verified that I adjusted the bindings correctly without charging me. That was a pleasant surprise. Bought my own boots because I didn't want to continue renting and felt great about adjusting my own bindings at home. Then I picked up a new set of skis from somewhere else and adjusted them to fit my new boots. Well, there's a crazy adjustment with those Tyrolia bindings and my reassembly wasn't perfect. Someone noticed that and told me as I was leaving! Basically I've had great experiences renting ski equipment as well as servicing the stuff that I have. 100% recommended before heading to the snow! read more

Support this little shop! They have a lot of inventory, surprisingly. I've only experienced snow gears from them, so can't comment on the bike gears. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, sometimes there's a wait to get help but they'll spend as long as you wish to get you fitted and appropriately sized. They encourage you to call ahead so they can fit you in without making you wait. They do day and seasonal rentals, buy back programs etc. don't wait until late December to shop for snow gears though, they do run out, just like everywhere else. Just purchased my turbo levo here, great shop and great customer service especially Will, he fitted my bike for my height and weight, explained everything that I needed to know, the basics, the warranty and maintenance, and setting up the mission control app for specialized, very polite, respectful, and easy to talk to and even helped me load up the bike to my car. This place is great! When I first moved to Davis, I came here since it was the closest bike shop to my place in East Davis. Pretty easy to find, nice huge parking lot (next to the co-op), and friendly staff. I've only had to come here three times, but the service has been excellent every single time. The first two times were to get a bike license, very quick procedure. I was out in basically no time. The third time, I lived in North Davis, but had such a good experience with the personnel at Ken's that I drove all the way there. I got a flat (bike tubes and tires were worn out and old). The guy working there recommended that I get some armadillo tires after I told him that I had some issues with my bike slipping in the rain and given the puncture that sent my bike to them in the first place. Happy to say that it's been two years and my tires are still great. Sure, they're a little expensive (~$90 for both), but I've gotten great usage out of them. It only took an hour, so I just wandered around the food co-op until they called me and told me that my bike was fixed. I would totally recommend Ken's for everything you need. read more

My first purchase at Ken's was during shelter-in-place. I wanted a new helmet that was protective and cooler looking (lol, yes) than my bike helmet for roller skating practice. I called up Ken's and the employee kindly directed me through the web search, in-store stock check, and fit process. After picking what I thought was the perfect helmet, she asked if I realized that one was for skiing (oops, nope), and found one that looked similar but was sport-appropriate. I paid over the phone, my Green Machine coupon was honored, and I came by for pick-up outside the store. Employees wore masks and it was an easy handoff, my receipt taped to the helmet. I really wanted to look for a new Specialized brand bicycle. As an older woman I was looking for a quality bike but with lower entry and to sit more upright instead of having to lean over like my old MTN bike which is a Specialized RockHopper. My daughter now rides it. I looked at numerous bicycle shops in the SF Bay Area for a Specialized Roll Sport Low Entry. No luck. All sold out due to COVID-19 and Shelter In Place. Everyone decided to purchase bicycles for exercise while in SIP. I contacted a SF cycle shop via email since they stated on their website to email regarding inventory. They never responded so I found Ken's in Davis. Was able to order the bike online. Ken responded the same day with a very detailed email explaining to me with the Shelter In Place and such that the actual inventory differs from the website. He took the time to explain to me the model and color I ordered is no longer available and the color was discontinued. Ken went on to say they do have that model and new colors on order but what they will receive and when is currently unknown because of COVID-19 world wide. Ken recommended other Specializes models and similar model of what I originally ordered but a better model with hydraulic brakes in my size. Also on sale! Ken also said he would refund me the amount already paid through the online system if I decided I was no longer interested. I looked at Ken's website at other brands and models and decided to go with Ken's recommendation. I emailed him my decision and he responded immediately and this was after business hours. Customer service is A++. I highly recommend Ken's Bike's Bike-Ski in Davis, CA It was worth the drive from San Francisco! If there was a rating below 1 star, I would select it. All I can say is BUYER BEWARE!!! PROBLEM #1 - I dealt with Joe, a hard core, typical sexist ageist salesman who did not listen to anything I said that I was looking for and needed in a bike, and changed his story every time I talked to him. He tried to hard-sell me on all kinds of things I did not want, especially a high priced electric assist bike. After nearly walking out, he finally showed me a bike that he assured me was the "most comfortable bike they sell" and highly rated for customer satisfaction, and was the most up-right bike they have in the store. PROBLEM #2 Not sure who these buyers were, or why they thought this bike was so comfortable, but that was not the case for me. I told him I needed an upright bike that I could ride 15 to 25 miles (Davis bike loop, and to/from Winters, etc.) that would not make my elbows sore, which I had damaged doing years of karate (hence an upright bike). He assured me this one ($800+ price tag) was the one everyone loved, and everyone reported as the most comfortable ride. I asked about returns, and was told 30 days for full money back, and past that time, a rental rate would be subtracted (somewhere around $125 per month). It rained for the next 2 months, and getting out for rides was nearly impossible. But when I did ride it, after 5 miles, I was so sore, every joint ached (elbows, and now wrists as well) and I had to return home. To date, I put fewer than 50 miles on that bike, it still looks, and basically is still new. PROBLEM #3 I took the bike back in to the store, which now claimed I only had 14 days from the original purchase date, for the return option. Oh, and by the way, that bike is really only comfortable for around-town rides, like up to 10 miles. WHAT?????? and oh ya, the monthly rental rate is $235 per month -- $125 is the WEEKLY rental rate. My husband was there with me, and witnessed all of the above. "So, because of the time that has gone by, we can offer you a 50% refund." BAIT AND SWITCH. WHAT KIND OF CROOKS RUN THAT STORE? They talk out of both sides of their mouth!! Just know, if you shop there, they (Joe?) will not listen to what you actually want or need, they will not offer you lower priced options that they might have in the store, and they will HARD SELL YOU what gets them the highest commission (and he will try to wear you down by talking your head off.) Whatever policies or warranties they tell you or promise you, GET THEM IN WRITING or the story will change and you will be stuck. And by the way, I just found a much more comfortable bike that I picked up at the "Bike Garage," a non profit that operates in a couple of locations around town. I bought a brand new bike from them, that was donated by a gentleman who had bought a high end bike from -- guess where - KEN'S BIKE AND SKI. He similarly could not ride the bike, and had to be rid of it. Notice a pattern here? My gain, as he donated it, and it cost a lot less, but similarly, an older gentleman's loss - money completely wasted on a bike he could not use. SO KEN'S BIKE AND SKI GETS OFF ON RIPPING OFF LOCAL SENIORS?!? WOW, NOT GOOD OPTICS!! I WILL NEVER SET FOOT IN THAT STORE AGAIN. read more
