Great local skate shop in an ever growing City of Oceanside. Asylum is 3-4 blocks from the beach and is directly across the street from Asylum Surf. They carry a wide range of skateboard brands from clothing to wheels and bearings. The prices are really good considering the surrounding area and prices in surrounding stores. All the guys who work there are knowledgeable about skateboarding and are more than capable of building a complete skateboard. Great shop!! read more

So, I decided that I would get her a hat from the skate shop. The guys were AWESOME and very helpful!! I told them about my granddaughter and they were genuinely excited for her. Cool skateshop in Oceanside, this one focuses more on skateboaridng and they have a sister store for surfing. Its local to me but I'm located more than an hour away. It's a nice drive up and it's close to the beach so that a plus. I mainly enter the raffles at this shop for their sought after Nike SBs and I haven't won a lot but I do hit a few times. The raffles are fair and they give you a call if you've won so it's pretty quick to find out the results. I can't speak about anything else but so far experience has been good over there. Basically comparing this to the Asylum Surf shop, literally across the street. I wanted to hit up the surf shop and our one kid wanted to check out the skate shop, so we cam in here as well. Overall, the store wasn't bad. They had a good supply of branded skate apparel and things of the sort. Really didn't think they had a lot of actual skate stuff (could have missed it though). Staff was friendly enough and did ask if we needed help. We didn't make a purchase so our interactions with the staff were pretty limited. If you're more into skating than surfing, I'd recommend you check out this shop, as the names would imply. If you're into surfing go across the street and check out that shop. read more

Took my son here for his birthday to get a new skateboard and they two guys that were working that morning were the nicest and most helpful people I have ever met. They talked my son through what they thought he should get for his new board and were very knowledgeable on what brands they thought were best and explained everything very well to him. Today my five and a half year old son came in looking for a skateboard that would be good for him. The two young men were super nice, they listened to what I was looking for and helped us build a board that my son was over the moon to have. They asked him what his favorite color was for the deck, they put a little colored bolt when screwing in the deck so he would know the front from the back, and they even gave him a little heads up on footing. At the end they asked if my boys (my 3.5 year old was with me too) wanted stickers ... big deal for kids their ages. My boyfriend and his brother walked in this shop today, they dropped some limited sb Nike's and when they called yesterday they were told If they were going to receive any they would post it on their Instagram. Sure enough they posted it today and said they were "sold out" and then deleted the post. There's a bunch of kids running this store, there's a curly hair kid that told my boyfriend that the owner doesn't care about them as a customer and they only cater to locals (we reside in Oceanside), I don't know if that was supposed to be a racist comment, or if he's was just being a douche but the point is, if this owner has a contract with Nike and the employees are selling these shoes on the side or holding them for "local only" this could potentially be fraud. This is one of the coolest shops I've been to yet! My 14 year old son and I came looking to buy him a complete skateboard and keep in mind, my son and I barely know anything about skateboarding. The employees helped me through the entire set up of the skateboard and answered everyone of my questions and gave me there opinions on the best boards and wheels and why! Was disrespected when walking in to get my bearings pressed . The manager was super helpful i wish I got his name . His excuse for his co-worker basically telling me to "do it yourself at home " in a demeaning way . Store wasn't packed at all and it takes them 5 min to press my bearing into my wheels. After the manager walked up to me and said sorry he was having a "rough day ". Lmk when I can get my ones . And I'll bring the manager a donut when I come back for the ones . I just want to say a few words about the staff. I am almost (2 more years) 50. but I grew up in skate culture. It would be really easy for this place to become a hang out with indifferent employees. That is not the case. The staff are so attentive and know the product. They are what you want in an employee. I have been a retail manager probably longer then they have been alive. That probably goes back on the owner for trusting them. I have an Amazon Prime account I could easily have these shoes two day dropped. Yet I prefer to give these guys my business for good reason. I'm one of those people that only show up when there's a raffle for an SB dunk. I've taken numerous L's from this shop and now I've caught a couple W's on the Elephant Dunks and the Crater Dunks. Pretty cool little skate shop in the heart of downtown, just a couple blocks from the pier. Stopped in the check out their clothes and see what they had to offer. Not a huge selection but given the size of the shop it wasn't bad. A decent amount of clothing and boards. The staff was really chill and let me browse without bugging me. Only one of them even acknowledged my presence, for being a skate shop they had a decent selection of boards and shoes and the like but they literally had ONE set of pads (elbow, knee, and wrist) in toddler size... This is my favorite skate shop to go to in San Diego county. The people working are always incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Every time I've been in, someone has greeted me and asked me if I needed any assistance. There's also no pressure here, and I never feel awkward or unwelcome when I'm just browsing the inventory. Not sure why anyone would write a bad review on this place, but from my personal experience, I always look forward to coming here; whether it's for a deck, hardware, clothes or what have you. As I've said, my favorite thing about this place is how welcoming and helpful the staff are here. I'll usually tell someone what I'm looking for, they'll help me pick something out and then we might just talk about what ever for a few minutes. I gave it a 4 star just because it's a bit pricey! I went in here yesterday and built a cruiser skateboard. At first, there was a young guy who didn't know anything and wasn't helpful at all. THEN, an older young man comes out who has brown hair and he helped me out SO MUCH! I got the best wheels trucks and bearings for my buck and he was a cool person and eager to help. You can tell he enjoys his job and the owner should thank this guy because I was about to walk out empty handed before the supervisor guy came out and took over.
