I like this surf shop, and the vibe it maintains as the downtown changes rapidly. Feels more like a local spot than this touristy stuff flooding Oceanside. Prices of course as quite inflated since it's so close to the Strand. If you need essentials stay inland for your sunblock and whatever. I love the Oceanside Low Life gear. I was visiting the area an was looking for some replacement board boards for me and my daughter. The only remotely negative comment I have is I could not see the boards when I walked in... Staff pointed me to the section, looked for a bit then asked for some assistance. Immediately a sales person help me pick 2 boards, a set of fins and leashes for both boards and installed. When we go to an oceanside town, I like to try and find at least one surf shop to check out. Even though my surf days are probably long behind me, I still enjoy checking out what the local surf shops have to offer. I was really impressed with this shop! As with most surf shops, they don't have a ton of square footage, but they really packed a ton of stuff into this shop without making it seem overly cluttered. Great selection of surf brand apparel, including some of their own Asylum branded stuff. Not a huge selection of surf boards, but what they had more then was enough to give you a good selection, if you're in the market, to go along with the technical capabilities to make sure you are set up with all the accessories that you need. Staff were super friendly and helpful while we were here. Couldn't leave without getting one of the Asylum branded t-shirts. Really cool place! They hooked me up wtih a really nice Pro body board & rip cord, that fits my style, my destinations, my tall physical size and ability that will last me at least another decade. I walked in with a brand new long board looking to get all setup with the hardware. Just to walk out with two different set of trucks that didn't fit had to go back and exchange them and then they sold me smaller wheels that I didn't know didn't fit the board until taking it to a different skate shop in town. I literally asked for help since this was my very first board and didn't get much of that. Also everything here is completely over priced I wish they gave me a receipt to return this stuff. I am a newly O-side local (about two years) but I lived my whole life in San Clemente before here. So I am not some kook or out of towner or even a live east of the 5 freeway person. This shop is All Right, staff was most informative and helpful. The prices are legit. I saw at least 3 hats there that were 10 bucks cheaper than Tillys. The place is in the perfect tourist trap spot, and I like the vibe they have by not trying to nickel and dime everyone. I will shop at this place for years to come. read more

Came here to rent a surfboard for a few hours. $35 for a three hour rental, it included a wetsuit which I highly recommend. That water is cold!!! The staff is very friendly and eager to help. They love to talk surfing and give a few tips! Next time I'm back in Oceanside to ride waves this is the first place I'm coming back to! read more

I called the shop prior to going in and spoke with Lennen. I was looking for skim board and wetsuit for my son. I was so impressed with his customer service I decided to write this review. Lennen was very pleasant, informational and educational on the products. They did not have the wetsuit I needed , but I am looking for a suit for cold water. He did give me alternative places to go for this suit. I ended up with a skim board and he helped me determine the best size for my beginners. I would recommend this spot for sure! read more

*update* I am leaving my original review up because I think the issue should be made clear and it's something, from a customer's point of view, that can be paid attention to and avoided. But let me say this: there is something to be said about customer service. I mentioned that "the customer is king", and while the expression still exists and I believe it's more true in the US than in many other countries, it's not always handled that way. Just days after my initial experience I received a phone call from the owner of Asylum Surf who apologized personally and we had a good talk about what happened and he corrected the situation. What should I say? THAT is customer service. So there goes my drastic change in stars, because other than my experience, the store is great, the rental equipment is very good/in good condition and the selection of clothes and other items was also satisfactory. I would go there again, and if you're renting equipment: Just make sure you check what time the store closes yourself :) ** While Asylum seems like a great store with knowledgeable staff (as far as the equipment goes), be aware of their rental tactics. Great rental gear, helpful staff (when they don't seem uninterested/stoned), good prices on rental gear. However, when I rented some gear on a Saturday to be returned on Sunday, I asked what time I had to return it by. I was told "6pm". Then I asked "do you close at 6pm or do I get charged for another day after 6pm? What happens if I show up at 6:10pm by accident?" The answer was: "No, we close at 7pm but if we told people to be back at 7 they'd all be too late, so we tell people to be back at 6pm. 6:10 is no big deal." So I was satisfied and ensured the employee that I'd try my best to be back by 6. The next day I was at the store at 6:05pm only to find that the store clerk forgot to tell me that Sunday is the only day they don't close at 7, but instead at 6. ALL of the employees were still there, but they wouldn't accept my gear back. I was greeted with "You're too late dude". When someone returned the gear for me the next day (as I had to leave town) they explained the situation and the answer given was "bummer". - I realize we're in a surf town, but please hire teenagers that can at least treat their customers with respect and are not stoned. - I complained about being told the wrong store hours and was told that the clerk who told me that "knows what he's talking about" - I guess THAT makes it all right, no? It's quite apparent to me that he didn't know what he was talking about. Generally I would give Asylum a much higher rating, but please people, the customer is king. Get your act together. read more

This place sucks! Do not shop here! I bought 3 shirts for 80$ over priced but I really liked them they were marked wrong so I bought the wrong sizes I went home popped the tags off put one on and it was way to small went back the same days they wouldn't let me change them for the right size because the tags were off and I had my receipt! This place is a rip off way to over priced the kids that work there are not helpful at all and the manger told me off. Do not shop here! What a great place...searched all over town last Fall for the right size Custom X body board for a birthday gift for my middle school son, this is the ONLY place with a huge selection. The staff was so helpful and awesome to him, found the perfect board and accessories. He now competes on the school team and when we needed some help and instruction we called Asylum and got hooked up for an awesome beach session with one of their own surf team riders.
