This guy is sketchy. Years ago, I viewed an "old Italian" bass he was selling. I asked if he had "papers" for it, and he got extremely upset, said that HE wrote the papers for it, and attempted to berate me for asking. Perhaps he mistook my age for naivete. What he didn't know is that I had been having conversation with very reputable NYC violin dealers about what to look for in validating extremely old instruments (Moes, Salchow, etc). Anyway, the papers from most bass dealers don't hold water in violin shops, or at the major auction houses. If you have to do business with this guy, don't let him bully you around (with the euro accent and the fancy furniture) & GET A SECOND OPINION FROM A MAJOR NYC DEALER, at the very least. read more

Worked with Larry at this location to get a 3/4 Double Bass for the boy (who suddenly decided he wants to try that on top of everything else). Anyway, Larry took about 40 minutes with us to explain all aspects of the instrument, proper care, stance, transport,storage etc. Really one of the better customer service experiences I have had of late. Busy time of year for them as well given that it is 'back-to-school' season which made the service even more commendable. Different experience than previous reviewer. We rent a violin from Popescu for one our children, a beginner. His prices are extremely reasonable, much lower than the other local competition. The unusual-size instrument, which our teacher pronounced "strange looking," was then pronounced A-OK after she heard it -- sounds much better than any other small violin either of us has heard. Only complaint is that it seems they only provide fiberglass bows with rentals, not wooden ones, which sound better (and are provided by the other places we've rented from). I have no experience buying from Popescu, but our experience as renters has been perfectly fine, no sketchiness in this transaction. read more

I'm a music teacher and this is the only place I will send someone to get an instrument. Their rentals are of a much higher quality than any other that I have ever seen. These instrument are actually well set up and sound good even though they are small fractional sizes. The technicians at this shop are excellent and well trained and I have had them work on my own personal instrument. They do an excellent bow re-hair too. They know what they are doing. Their service is of the highest professional quality. I have done business with them for over 10 years. There is no substitute for quality, experience, depth of knowledge and dedication to arts education. I have seen the garbage instruments that all the other places rent out. I don't know what's up with these other reviews - they are flat out wrong. I give Constantine and his entire staff my highest recommendation. read more

Shockingly rude and racist service at this local Music store ... on a pleasant early summer day I tried to return a rented Cello ... the lone attendant took, handled and processed several phone calls while I was waiting ... When he returned to me after about 15-20 minutes, I said "that was rude" and that he should've attended to me rather than take several calls that started after I arrived and he had begun to process my return ... He told me to "Shutup you brown asshole" and asked me if I could "read" pointing to my coffee! (which I'd retrieved from my car while waiting for him to get back to me) ... I luckily decided not to jump over the counter and throttle him ... I told him that since he was ignoring me, I chose to ignore his tiny unobvious sign ... he then proceeded to claim that the rubber ball on the metal rod on the bottom of the Cello was "ruined" (it was scuffed) and that I owed him $6 ... I reminded him that we purchased insurance for the instrument and that the "damage" was expected, incidental/inconsequential and covered ... He said the insurance was for "accidents" not "negligence"... I told him to just try and charge me for the damage and see where that gets him ... I walked out without having committed an entirely justifiable assault ... Never going here again!! read more
