When I first considered going here, I saw the low reviews and I thought "Well it's not a restaurant. It probably doesn't matter." Boy was I mistaken. I saw Dr. Wing and he is without a doubt the worst orthopedist I've ever seen and one of the worst doctors. The care was adequate, which is why I'm not leaving a lower review. But he did not answer any questions or adequately explain what was happening to my leg. When I came back in for my followup, he didn't remember why I was there and once again failed to answer any questions I had. When I was having extreme pain, after I was supposed to be healed, I contacted him to discuss it. At first, he wouldn't even get on the phone. Then when I continue to ask the nurse my questions, he did get on the phone. He would not explain why I was still in so much pain. He did not want me to come back in or do any kind of further testing. He said well if it still hurts then go non-weight-bearing for six more weeks. I found that unacceptable so I saw a different orthopedist at a different practice. and day and night experience. That doctor explained exactly what was going on, what pain I could ignore/push through, and what I needed to pay attention to. And it turned out that if I had followed, Dr. Wings instructions, I would've made the situation much worse. Do not go here and if you have to, do not see him. read more

I had shoulder replacement surgery on a Thursday and started throwing up the following Saturday night. called 911 early Sunday morning and was admitted to hospital with sepsis, intestinal blockage and pneumonia. we called the clinic for 3 days and never received a call back. when I went in for follow up and told them what happened he got so defensive, like no way was it from surgery! I wasn't planning to sue but you would have thought I had threatened! no excuse for not returning a call!! once I am dismissed I will never go back! will seek out private practice! read more

I had rotator cuff surgery on 1/16/25 for a full thickness tear of two ligaments, debriding, and other issues. The OR staff was wonderful, very attentive and kept me informed of everything that they were doing. HOWEVER: two issues that makes them less than "5" in this rating: 1) It took nearly two hours to be called to PreOp. This is many times longer than I have had to wait on any of my other five or so other surgeries. no explanation was given for the delay, no apology. I'm old, and this was major surgery and I resent being stressed to this degree; and 2) I was given a number to call with post op. questions, ending in -1663. On 1/18, I called that number, and could not connect to a person. After several attempts, I called another number, which said it was the "direct contact number" (3119) for the doctor's nurse. The call was routed to her answering machine, which explained that she would be away from her desk until Tuesday (!), and would call back then, quite uselessly. My understanding of 'direct contact" is different from this. I then called back the 1663, and, after a considerable time, was finally able to get someone to pick up an extension. I explained the issue, and he said he'd have to transfer me to the nurses' station. The next thing I knew, I was hearing the same recording from 3119, telling me I'd get a call back Tuesday. I called the 1663 again, and no one would pick up a line. Had I not had major surgery just two days before, and were not incapacitated from pain and narcotics, I might have kept trying; but I finally just gave up and Googled thus and another question that arose later. The nurse did call today, as promise. I explained my experience, and she said that she was in the OR with the doctor on Mondays, as if this somehow excused the fact that I had no person to answer my questions immediately following surgery. This is not okay, not acceptable, and should be addressed before someone is hurt. PostOp patients need 24/7 support, not lines that are not answered. read more

Recently received surgery from another provider, called the day after the operation to schedule PT. I left follow-ups/voice mails and was only contacted a week later, where I was told they never received a referral, and that's a common issue since their correct fax is not on the website. Why wouldn't you make it easier for other providers to send over referrals by providing them on your website? It took another two weeks before I could actually schedule anything. After the long anticipated wait, I finally got to the office, where I talked to an occupational therapist for maybe 5 minutes and was shown one exercise. Maybe that's standard procedure, but I shouldn't have to wait three weeks post-op and hassle with employees to receive basic information that could be conveyed in a couple of sentences. Some of the employees were nice and helpful though, hence the two stars. read more

I have been in a billing nightmare with Athens Orthopaedic since Jan of this year. I attended the clinic for aninjury in December, followed by 4 follow up visits. Each time I have been overcharged for the co-pay and some of my credit card payments at the time of service were never credited at their end. In addition, the billing agency (third party I believe) is disorganized and unprofessional. Three times I have been told that someone in billing will review the documents and call me which has never happened. I am actually owed money. I have spent hours between phone calls and sending my documentation, but cannot get a resolution. While the PA who attended my injury was quite competent, we'll be looking elsewhere for further treatments. read more

No, thank you 2 1/2 months ago I was x-rayed and they found a bone spur. I need pain medication but they gave me some light ass pain medication that wouldn't help anybody in pain. As the pain continued, I continued to bike ride because no pain no gain. I had called Dr. Florence left a message telling his nurse that I was going through an enormous amount of pain. They denied me pain medication roughly one and 1/2 to 2 weeks later I called with the same issue this time they did honor me with a 24 pill supply of Hydro CodonE. The very low end of an opioid. That did some good with the pain, but did not kill all the pain. Fast-forward had to go back to the urgent care because I was feeling pain elsewhere around where the bone spur was but this pain was not bones for pain. This was significantly different And too. My foot was very swollen. Could not wear any of my shoes. Urgent care gives me some lightweight pain/reduce swelling medication and antibiotics as I thought originally perhaps something internal within my foot is. Infected. They did an x-ray before giving me the little wannabe pain medication and the antibiotic could not find anything so they set me up an appointment to get an MRI for the following Saturday. Pain continues. I just have to take 45 of those lightweight pain medications to feel somewhat relief. Fast-forward after MRI Monday after the MRI I experience horrific pain Tuesday not so much Wednesday horrific pain, and today, Thursday horrific pain. I think today was by far the worst that I've experienced in terms of pain. I called Dr. Florence's nurse leave messages that I'm out a pain medication. Please prescribe me some until my doctor visit which is tomorrow Friday, August 15. He would prescribe only that lightweight pain medication knowing good and well that's not gonna kill any of this pain unless I take seven or eight needless to say they didn't do anything as if they don't care if I suffer or not and probably don't care if any of you all suffer or not. Went to the emergency room Sat in the waiting area for 3+ hours got fed up with waiting. I was told there was two people in front of me and then I would be in to see the doctor to get pain medication well lower and behold they keep calling names to come see the doctor. My name was never called after seven or eight other names were I walked out highly pissed so tomorrow Friday, I'm going back to see to Florence and don't anticipate him to do anything to help me with my pain. Would not recommend this clinic or maybe it's just Dr. Florence I don't know but when somebody's in pain don't you help somebody out or do you want them to suffer? I guess they want me to Suffer five thumbs down. read more

Dr. Door was one of the rudest doctors I have ever met, not friendly at all. When a doctor ask you what your problem is and you proceed to tell him and then before you get done speaking he just glances over to my aunt beside me and says she likes to talk a lot. He did not even let me finish telling him what my problem was he spoke to her from then on out. I will never go back to see this doctor. Plus I had x-rays done that day. And he failed to mention it to me that if I wanted to keep them, I had to pick them up at the office and request them which he did not do that so I did not get to get my x-rays and they destroy them. I believe his name was Dr. DOORE something like that. The reason I had went there was that I had seen Dr. Schuler before for a minor surgery and he was one of the nicest doctors that you would ever meet. It was close to closing time. They were all ready to get out of there because even the receptionist didn't even take time to ask me would I like to have my x-rays? Don't think I'll be going back there not unless it's absolutely emergency and then it will not be with Dr. door just plain rude did not want to take time to listen. don't ask what's wrong if you don't wanna hear it you're in the wrong business. read more

They are wonderful surgeons and are very attentive to patients' care. Brandon was especially attentive to my physical problems and diseases. If you want to know why you have certain symptoms and want accurate diagnosis and need diagnostic testing, don't expect David Wright and Brandon V. Dr Price PA should NOT be practicing medicine. I had major back surgery performed by Dr. Price. The nature of the surgery results in immense pain; however, Dr. Price was attentive and helped me get the pain under control as quickly as he could. Run away from this place if you can. They have a monopoly on orthopedic care in Athens so they don't care at all about their patients. People are treated like cattle. Professional tip...don't keep people who have appointments waiting an hour and a half. If patients were late, you'd cancel the appointment and charge a missed appointment fee. This is absurd! I'm about to take my stitches out myself and send them a bill. Go to Greenville or Atlanta if you need hand surgery. Go to Piedmont Orthopedics for legs and knees in Athens. Great surgical care...the recovery/PT to follow is as subpar as it can be. The "physical therapy" is them telling you to ride the bike for any foot/ankle/knee pain. They'll have a trainer work with you for the last 5-10 minutes of your appointment...but it honestly seems like it's just for show. The PTs put you on a machine for 75-90% of your time, then go and hang out with other PTs. They'll give you a solid 10 minutes of instruction though...just enough to make it *appear* to be a full therapy hour to new clients...but it's mostly "do this for 20 min, then do this...then "ice." I'm not sure what the disconnect between surgeons and the PT department but it's a MAJOR fall off.... Would have rather found any other PT that isn't the McDonald's type of PT where everyone is treated the same (80 yr old knee replacement is same as 20 yr old tibia/fibia break which is all the same as a hip replacement...) which are all very different recovery plans. Oh and it's amazing that despite your insurance or copay or anything....if you "bill" the cost, even with a $10USD COPAY, yes $10 total that insurance didn't pay, they will send you a cute note that literally says "first and last alert, you have a balance of $10 due by XX/XX and if you don't pay EVEN IF YOUVE GONE THERE FOR YEARS, even if you have paid THOUSANDS to them....they'll send that $10 to collections within 30 days no questions asked. I would rather have my mechanic friend provide me PT than them, but the surgeons are decent. I guess that's how they really hook you. TL;DR Avoid this practice for any post-operation needs, was current on my thousands $ of bills but missed a $10 copay and within 30 days, it was immediately sent to collections despite having paid 10s of thousands of dollars for surgery, etc. Trying to call the office they offered no help; pretty much "it is what it is" read more

My husband had knee surgery by Dr. Mahoney on 7/13/20. All went well for him but not for me. I accompanied him on his 1st followup visit which was with his PA, Joe Hale. While there, we asked him what is done with the knee cap during surgery to which he explained that since it's not attached to the knee it is moved to the outside of the knee and held in place until moved back. Then he looked at my knee replacement incisions, asked how long ago the surgery was and when satisfied with my answer, rolled over on his stool, grabbed my knee cap and without asking my permission, moved my knee cap all the way to the right side of the knee. Ouch. Ever since, my knee clicks with each step I take. I've written to Dr. Mahoney twice to explain the parlor trick his sidekick performed on me and asked that he make an appointment with me to look into my problem. I have heard nothing back so now I have an appointment with my own orthopedic surgeon in Atlanta to have him look into the problem. Additionally, either the 3rd party billing company or AOC's internal patient billing department has messed up my husband's account, misapplying payments and failing to provide answers to what some of the expenses are that are not covered by Medicare. In fact, they won't even submit them, they just bill the patient and expect us to pay without questions. I have been promised multiple times that someone in authority would get back to me to answer my questions but I have never heard from anybody. Thank goodness I document every phone call with times, dates, names and action promised. Neither one of us will ever enter into AOC's doors again and at this point, I wouldn't let Dr. Mahoney touch my knee to diagnose it or correct it. Don't go here for treatment. PLEASE keep every single receipt and payment record you get from these bloodsuckers!! I paid them off in the amount of 72.00 in February 2022. It is now MAY of 2022 and they are still billing me and threating to send me to collections for a bill they claim is over 90 days past due. I have gone to their own web site and sent 3... THREE emails asking them to explain this and verify my payment ( I have a copy of the check from the bank where it has been paid!) and they just ignore me... this is a money making factory it is not a CARE facility at all ... they are out to get as much as they can any way they can... Run away. Half the surgeons are good at what they do, the other 1/2, well, you're taking your chances. I now have mismatched implants because my surgeon lied - LIED - and told me I'd have the same implants. Then his PA obfuscates that fact when he tried to give me a set of misleading x-rays. I'm in pain, and I'm told the surgeon's tagline: "I wouldn't want you to end up with another problem worse than the first" (i.e. referring to opioid addiction). Are you kidding me?? You just sawed, hammered, and screwed my bones and you're telling me to worry about opioid addiction, which I know for myself, isn't an issue? I'm off pain killers. However, I'm more worried about why more than a year later, I'm still in pain from the surgery. I'm told not to "loosen" the implant, to which I reply how not to do that and told "let pain be your guide". It's this sort of circular BS and taglines being vomited up by the extremely incompetent staff. The surgeon's nurse, the medical records cow, the medical records cow's boss, they're all completely incompetent. They do not respond to requests for information, whether it's email or phone. The pre-op is lacking severely in useful information, like you'll have to take antibiotics before dental procedures for the rest of your life. The post-op is pathetic. After the surgery, you are on your own. Whatever your result is at that point, you're going to have to manage on your own. It consists of an appt where they x-ray the area, literally do not even look at the surgical site, say 'uh-huh', see you later. If you do have questions about your condition, you're made to feel like you're a burden and barely worth answering, only because the lazy slag nurse HAS to respond do you get a response. I've had a previous surgery at a different place - St. Joseph's in Atlanta, and it was a stellar experience in comparison. read more

Wow watch out for these people! It's important to read these reviews before you consider AOC for your surgery. First and foremost was my total right knee replacement on 5-10-19. About a year after I had it done the right side swelled up and became numb. I didn't think to much of it until four months later I was bending over when I heard a crack from my knee something like a gunshot from a 22 rifle. No lie! I saw the PA just before Christmas of 2020. He took a bunch of X rays and said it was nothing on their part. Five months later(these are approximations) something started sticking out of the left side of my right knee. not through the skin yet. so time went on and i just lived with it having covid in 2021 it was difficult to see a doctor. Just recently I decided I would see someone else. So a week ago I went to Emory in flowery branch and had X rays. They showed that the implant plate had split in half. They will operate on 7-13-22 and hopefully I will be over the pain. I have to say the surgeon Dr. Manfredi was probably pretty thorough with the surgery, but the parts they put in were definitely sub-standard. As far as the billing department goes I do believe that I was overbilled, because a year later after my two insurances had paid AOC I get a bill for 565.75. I paid the bill but it really pis/// me off. They also said I hadn't cancelled one appointment that wasn't in time which was bu// sh//. They tried to hose me for 10.00. I fought that one and because i had over paid them about 11dollars and change they said i was even by their math. Very petty. Sometimes, you really understand the way an organization works when something goes wrong. For example, something happened with my neck surgery that resulted in a screw tip penetrating my bone and moving against my spinal cord. I never really received a clear explanation of how that happened and the surgeon remarked that it never had happened to him before. At any rate, it required the surgery to be performed again in somewhat of an urgent manner. I was quickly added to a surgical calendar and the surgery was redone. At this point, I became like a lost patient. No one set a follow-up visit - I nearly had to demand to see my doctor. Then when I arrived at my first post surgical visit, following a surgery that had notable complications, I discovered that the physician had left because he hadn't been given notice that I would be 10-15 minutes late? It seems that a patient with my complications might warrant closer followup with their physician, but my physician saw no importance in that - and rather than considering a phone call regarding my well being - he needed to finish his day and depart the practice. Keep in mind, there was previously no hesitation to call me when the CAT scan detected a screw tip in my spinal cord? I have interacted with the CEO over this matter and he did respond to my inquiry. I advised him that I didnt think I should have to pay copays for the 2nd surgery since it was a "redo" of the first surgery. He failed to address that matter in his response and now I am seeing billings in the $1000s when my insurance plan clearly states "surgical" and "facility" copays for services rendered. If a surgery has to be done twice, should I pay twice? You be the judge? FYI - my insurance has been billed for both procedures. Proceed with peril. read more

I have had no help in relieving pain in my knee and surrounding areas on the right leg. I have had an injury where I pulled ligaments and tendons in my right ankle. They put me in a boot. I got up off the toilet and tire my meniscus in my knee. This all started in May 2015. I had physical therapy and aquatic therapy and then I had surgery for my knee in 2017. Pain is still there. I have had numerous visits. I can barely walk. I went to physical therapy again and a cortisone shot. No help. I went to the Oconnee Regenterative and Joint Institute instead. I was not told that they had injections nor medical message. In fact I was given heal pads to put in my shoes. What a joke. When I told them during physical therapy that the stiffness and pain was worse their excuse was it is going to be bad before it gets better. Well, that is a phony excuse. Pleased? NOT. I have worked in the medical field for fifteen years and this office is set up for optimum billing. You are herded like cattle with them booking as many appointments as possible per day which means as little face time as possible on your visit. And... There is a doctor for every body area, so if you have hip and back issues, guess what, two doctor visits and two co-pays. What about MRI follow ups... In my case, The PA walked in , read it, no follow up visit made, no prescription, nothing, was in there less than three minutes and billed a higher level billing code- which is reserved for 15 minutes of patient contact. Fraudulent billing in my opinion. Charged my 50.00 copay though. When I called to get an appointment with the back doctor they said the doctor wouldn't see me until I saw the Physician Assistant first. What is that? Really? I see I'm not the only one who had problems with the billing department. I had a total knee replacement done. a year later I started having pain in the knee. I was told that I couldn't make an appointment with the doctor who did the surgery because I owed a no-show fee of $125. I was Not a no-show but I absolutely could not get an appointment until that fee was paid I live on disability it took me 3 months to pay that fee by then 2 days before my appointment I had to go to the hospital with a staph infection in my knee! A total of 4 surgeries and nearly losing my life! I loved my doctors but I do not care for the surrounding staff support. They were sometimes downright rude. I may be living on disability but my insurance paid tens of thousands of dollars for me to be treated that way. Like I said I loved my doctor's but I will never go back there again. read more

January 2021: Athens Orthopedic repaired my Achilles-tendon. May 2021: Athens Orthopedic repaired my rotator cuff. My insurance company paid approximately $12,000. I paid out of pocket approximately $4,500. Total payments est. $16,500. In November Athens Orthopedic Billing indicated I still owed $200. I challenged the balance and finally in November they adjusted the balance and stated my account was paid in full. In May of 2021 (5mths later) I received notice I was turned over to collections for $189 and Athens Orthopedic refuses to remedy this situation. Highly frustrated and now my credit has been negatively impacted. Hopefully, my experience will shed light on your future decision in selecting Athens Orthopedic as your care provider. read more

I fell on Sept. 24, broke the top off my humerus bone and was seen at AOC two days later. I was told that considering my age (72) that the outcome of treatment was the same with or with surgery. The tip of the humerus was almost sticking out of the skin and I was in constant pain. I finally gave up and went to Ortho Georgia in Macon on Nov.1 and had it repaired on Nov. 2. Run far away, they think the Doctors are something special as to why it's all about money, not about seeng to the quality care of a patient in need , what they took an oath of when they became Doctors, apparently they think these Doctors hands are made of gold, but only thing made of gold is ther pockets, it's all about money to them, they could give 2 sh**,s if a patient is n need, they don't care if the patient is in pain, if you don't have money they just let you suffer, with no effort what so ever in trying to help... read more
