From the moment I stepped inside, I felt like it was the Twilight Zone. Dark and musty, no lobby or…read morepeople to greet, I had to wander the halls searching for voices in the "activity room," which was down steps in the front of the building---a circle of wheelchairs, with half-asleep residents sitting in them. The staff was talking loudly amongst themselves all about how tired they were and how their weekends were...no direct communication with the residents that I could see. I finally was greeted by someone who brought me up some stairs (what is it with all these stairs?) to the office (food wrappers lying on the counter), but there was no brochure or rate sheet (she had to yell at another staff member to prepare one for me). She proudly told me that Florence NH was the "very first licensed nursing home in Illinois;" no kidding. It looked like the original wallpaper and linoleum floors. The rickety little gate they had to keep residents from falling down the stairs would not have been suitable as a dog gate, and was not even closed. Staff was glum, no greetings from anyone, the halls were dark and narrow, the bedrooms dank and musty---no bathrooms; shared bathrooms in the halls. The dining room was brighter, but the kitchen noise is right there, like a very cheap diner in the middle of nowhere. I was ready to leave as soon as the tour started, but I made my self see the whole place. I can tell you, I had a lump in my throat all the way back to the city, on the verge of crying, it was so depressing to think that people's "loved ones" were kept there. I admired the one old guy who sat outdoors on a chair all day, smoking his cigarettes and thinking to himself, not coming inside until he had to. Not sure what he does in the winter, but I will never be able to refer a client to this place.

We had two once-a-week Homemaker Aides from Serenity. The first one was a nice young woman who did…read moreabsolutely nothing unless she was asked, and spent a lot of her time in another room on her cellphone. We created a list of things that should be done each visit. The first time she kind of did some of it, then never asked for the list or ever took any initiative in doing any work after. Maybe she'd wipe the stove, take out the trash. Half-assed bathroom cleanup. There were obvious things that needed doing; take out the trash, do a quick floor wet-mop, clean up the kitchen and the bathroom. Refill fridge with waters, beverages, sodas from the pantry. Easy stuff. 1 hour of actual work and then she could have timed out the clock. The next gal only came a few weeks. Another one who did virtually nothing. She even told us she is not "allowed" to clean the toilet! Her first visit to the home for a "meet-and-greet", the topic of photography came up, and her elderly client gave her a camera! A nice camera, older (Sony cybershot w/ a Zeiss lens), but still worth a couple hundred dollars or more! I wonder if the employees are given any instruction on the ethics of accepting gifts of value greater than $20. Did absolutely NOTHING unless asked to. She came a few more times and got another job. The staff here seems to have ZERO training in what they are expected to be doing as Home Helpers. They don't even ask the client, "Hi, what would you like me to do today around the house or for you? Would you like something to eat/drink?" I was there to provide a tour of the place, showing where things were, but they seemed to absorb zero info. They don't even bother to engage with the client if they don't have to. I think the only qualification for working for Serenity is to pass a criminal background check. Sad. Old people who need help are being taken advantage of. Family, who can't be there 24/7 are watching what's done, when they can. And what I've seen hasn't been good. We are working with a different company now. A bit better, but all these employees do "slow walking" and "how do I do that?" and hiding out in another room. SAD

This company is very shady. I would not recommend to any nurse looking for a job. Clients are nice…read morebut the company is a joke. I agree that this company is very diverse, however it seems like they hire off the street. The admin manager lacks any professionalism and there are constant lies. Schedulers are very disorganized and there is almost frequent miscommunication. Timesheets are a mess. They have electronic charting yet they still require paper timesheets. Doesn't make sense.
