I received physical therapy from the Athletico on Harlem. It felt like I was a part in a manufacturing process - and they processed me. After 2 weeks my symptoms went from mild to severe and during that time my therapist didn't ask how I was progressing. I am very disappointed as I had used this specific Athletico several years earlier and had had a good experience. To add insult to injury, they added a "virtual" person to the process. I was not consulted on whether I needed the extra help - which, as I was going 2x per week, I really shouldn't have. As a result of this separation of actual therapy with virtual discussion ("sneak" billing), I will never go back to Athletico. read more

I highly recommend James Borre as a physical therapist. When I first came to the clinic, I was having difficulty walking and was later diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I had seen a few other physical therapists before James, and the difference was immediately clear. He is thoughtful, attentive, and truly engaged--never just going through the motions. Every session began with questions like, "What's different this week?" or "What new things have you been experiencing?" From there, he tailored the session to address those issues directly. He consistently encouraged me to stick with my home exercises and to keep going to the gym, even when MS-related discomfort made it difficult. Beyond physical therapy, James also supported me with guidance on diet and nutrition when I was unexpectedly losing weight. He helped me identify that my late-afternoon fatigue was MS-related and triggered by heat. Extremely Disappointed with the Rude Receptionist I've probably written fewer than two negative reviews in my 58 years, but my experience with the Athletico at Division & Harlem absolutely warrants one. My daughter had meniscus surgery Friday and was told by her doctor to begin therapy within a week. She called to schedule, but the receptionist, Gustavo, was incredibly rude, dismissive, and made her feel like she was an inconvenience. He told her to handle her insurance issues herself -- which wasn't true or necessary. She tried again later, hoping for better luck, and got Gustavo again -- who was somehow even more unpleasant. When her UIC nurse tried to step in, she immediately understood because he was rude to her too. Thankfully, that wonderful nurse got my daughter into another Athletico location in River Forest near Lake & Harlem, where she's now being treated with care and respect. I called myself to let Gustavo know how unacceptable his behavior was. There's no reason for anyone in patient care to act this way. I honestly wish I could give this place zero stars. Everyone is nice but totally incompetent. I went in with hopes of getting help with PT and instead was constantly bombarded with insurance "mistakes". Instead of anyone in the facility doing their job and looking what was required, They shoot off the hip and tell you everything is ok, just to get an appointment booked. Only to really do their jobs the day of the appointment and call and cancel with apologies that they were unaware. I was treated in Occupational Therapy by Angela Stevenson, and she worked hard! I experienced vague pains, muscle spasms in my forearm, and shoulder issues. Beware of cost. My son is a high school student at OPRF and they have a connection to this business. He was referred here after experiencing pain during track. When I asked about price at my son's first appointment I was told, "don't worry about it, you will get a bill after it is sent to insurance. Generally just a co-pay". Only after his fourth visit did I get a bill. They charged $431 for a single appointment. Not just the intake visit that is generally more expensive. My insurance covered a reasonable amount of that but I was left with a more than $600 bill for four appointments. The average cost of physical therapy per hour in the Chicagoland region is around $150. How did I pay the top end of that price range AFTER my insurance already paid over the average cost? Rip off. I have been to the Athletico on Division and Harlem in Oak Park three times (2009, 2010, 2023) in the past 14 years. Each time, I have come away feeling much better and with my body in far better condition than it was before. This last time was easily the best of my three experiences at Athletico; because I came away with a new lease on life, with a strong feeling of my mind, body, and soul being in a much better place than they were before. That is due in large part to the therapist I had this last time--Jim Borre. The facility is well-maintained and hygienic; and all the staff (Paul George, Gabriel, etc.) are professional and friendly; but Jim is by far the best part of this Athletico. When I think of Jim, this equation repeatedly comes to my mind: Plato + Gandhi + Carl Jung + Jack LaLanne + Captain America = Jim Borre. While being as professional as possible, Jim gets to know his patients one-on-one--their hopes, their dreams, their doubts, what makes them tick. That allows him to see patients as individuals and to build a rapport with them that allows us to trust him implicitly. Because he is intelligent and well-read, one of the ways that this rapport manifests itself is in Jim's personalized (and appropriately personal) conversations with his patients. I have studied and taught philosophy and social studies for decades. Once Jim found that out, we would often have some of the more engaging conversations I've had in recent memory while he was conducting my therapy. It's clear that Jim cares about his patients as individuals, and he sees them as part of the same community he belongs to. Everything that Jim does to help his patients heal is not only a tried-and-true best practice of PT, it is also one that he has obviously thought through very well. Moreover, as I saw him do many times, he would do more than just tell me what I should do, he would show me, by demonstrating it himself, and always while explaining something about the form, the mechanics, or some other point of PT that would better help me to understand how that exercise or movement would positively impact my recovery. Along the way, it became clear that Jim takes a decidedly holistic approach--mind, body, and soul--to his patients' recovery. He told me things that would help me improve not only my injury, but also my diet, sleep habits, exercise regime, and general perspective on life. Finally, due to his deep knowledge of his profession, his dynamic and engaging personality, his natural wit and charm, as well as his ability to give calm, clear, and persuasive explanations and instructions, Jim is an excellent teacher and leader who inspires those around him to be better. I witnessed this personally in his interactions with me, his other patients, his co-workers, and, most notably, in his interactions with a PT student of Jim's (Nora) who worked with us during the first few weeks of this past stint of mine at Athletico. Jim is simply a smart and wise man, a good dude, a true mensch who really cares about his patients and takes a holistic approach to their well-being. All of that makes him a truly excellent therapist, of the body, yes, but also of so much more. It is for those reasons that I recommend the Athletico on Division and Harlem in Oak Park wholeheartedly and without any reservations whatsoever. I give it a 10 out of 10, 5 stars out of 5. Without a doubt, the biggest reason for that rating is Jim Borre, one of the best therapists and teachers it has ever been my privilege to know. I hope that I'll be so healthy and injury-free that I won't have to go to PT again; but if I do, I know that I'll be in the best of hands if I'm fortunate enough to have Jim Borre as my therapist again. read more

I have been to probably half a dozen PTs for various issues and have never felt that someone had as clear of a grasp on my problems (lower back/hip pain) as Naz. She clearly explained/justified everything we were doing in terms of the underlying anatomy, and was extremely patient when I was not the best patient (reinjuring myself). She is remarkably attentive even when handling multiple patients, and will focus on making a plan specific to your goals. Beyond being great at her job she was always extremely nice and light-hearted. Highly recommend Athletico Oak Park for any PT needs. As an alternative to surgery, I worked with Nick for my rotator cuff injuries and my shoulder is stable and strong now after 6 weeks of hard work. He listened to my goals, challenged me appropriately, made sure my form was safe throughout exercises and taught me practical and do-able home regimens. Easy to schedule appts (recommend scheduling all appts up front so you get the times you want), responsive and friendly front desk staff, clean and updated facility. They care about their patients. The PT's see multiple patients at once, this is pretty standard, and also gives you space to zone out and do your reps. Go to this location if you need PT! Easy parking is a bonus! read more

I am just finishing up physical therapy at the Oak Park North location of Athletico for knee replacement surgery and a foot drop complication, working with Mcoriolle Mahusay (Maki). I had not been looking forward to the prospect of post-surgery therapy, based on experiences reported to me by friends/family members, but Maki carefully guided me through my recovery, addressing all my concerns and working in new activities to help me achieve more mobility. He is professional, considerate, and always encouraging. I actually ended up looking forward to my therapy sessions instead of dreading them! My surgeon is also very pleased at the pace of my recovery. The rest of the staff is friendly and efficient. I certainly plan to return to this branch of Athletico for therapy following my second knee operation. read more

I saw Alvic at this facility twice a week for 14 weeks for cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis. When I started I cld not walk much before I was in pain and had to sit. I was stiff all the time and had all sorts of neuropathies. Alvic designed a stretching and strengthening protocol for me that improved my symptoms. At the end of my therapy I was walking 60 mins every day, I was more agile and in a lot less pain. Highly recommend Alvic and this facility. Rudy. read more

Yes, you share your therapist with other patients during sessions, but when you're working through the exercises, the therapist checks in every few minutes and monitors you closely when you start new ones. I found the conversations with Sara, other staff, and other patients refreshing and enjoyable. It made what might otherwise have been tiresome exercises feel downright enjoyable. The therapy Sara provided was effective and rewarding, leading me through a series of increasing challenges to rebuild my strength and motility, reducing my pain from tendonitis and carpal tunnel. These are techniques I can use to treat myself in the future and prevent recurrence. Every question I asked was answered and I looked forward to my appointments because of her. Well, her and the staff. I found everyone friendly and happy to help (December 2020 - January 2021). The front desk staff at this Athletico is awful. I receive so many phone calls from them requesting that we reschedule appointments due to staffing needs at the clinic, have been turned away for appointments that have been scheduled due to mistakes on their end and for a multitude of other reasons. Staff are unable to answer simple questions regarding the reason for the call and put me on hold time after time to clarify simple information that they should have answers to before having called me. My podiatrist recommended BodyGears over Athletico, but Athletico was more convenient in regards to location and parking. Big mistake... I should have gone with BodyGears! read more

I'd agree with reviewers who complain that the therapists tend to set you up and check in periodically (while chatting to other staff about the game tonight, etc.). This didn't bother me much, since the exercises were helping my knees and I was moving the whole time. But the bills were ridiculous; even with insurance and most of my deductible already met it end up over $600. Referred now for rehab of a shoulder, I called a couple other local PT chains and have discovered that their rates are almost half of Athletico's (and with better reviews!). Definitely ask about rates and shop around. In my experience, there could be better providers out there, and possibly at a much lower cost. read more

Physical therapy! You don't want to be in the position that you need. But if the day comes that you must have it, this is the place to go. I had re-constructive shoulder surgery. It was the second time in thirty years that I destroyed one of my shoulders. Guess you only have two and now I've destroyed both. The big difference is where I had my therapy. Thirty years ago I finished my therapy and lost range of motion(ROM), could have qualified for partial disability. This time, with the help a very knowledgable staff, I have 100% ROM in every measurable area. The therapist are tough on you, but the mission is accomplished. I watched them treat a myriad of injuries. Got to know many of the patients and there ailments. I watched as they graduated and all were thankful they had chosen Athletico. I guess I should have known I was in the right place when I saw the logos of the Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, golf association etal. They send their players here for rehab. Signed jerseys from players. I went this location and was treated extremely course. I was asked to sign a paper to allow them to put a lien on my medical bill from a car accident. I told the young lady I wanted to consult my attorney before signing anything. She went on to attempt to force me to sign the paper when I refused she became combative. When I returned yesterday for my scheduled appointment. I was asked to check in as usual, but was abruptly told in such a demeaning manner' the office coordinator told me to tell you we can't service you if you don't sign this paper". I told him I'm waiting for my attorney to get back to me in regards to that form. He flippantly told me were not going to service you if you don't sign this form. With everyone watching, I felt so disrespected, demeaned and mistreated. I calmly said are you asking me to leave, he rolled his eyes and said YES. I turned and walked out. I need therapy, but I would rather sit in the gutter with rats walking all over me rather than go there again. read more

This company gives bonuses based of number of patients seen i went for OT for my hand. The therapist scheduled patients every 15 minutes! She wasn't a good multi tasker so often I. Would just sit and wait for her to get back to me. After several sessions I realized that except for one other person, all of her patients had been coming for MONTHS and hadn't improved. The straw that broke the camel's back was during my hand massage, the OT was engrossed in conversation with someone else and her fingers stopped moving. I changed to another provider where They schdule one patient every 45 minutes and the OT works with me the entire time. Much much better. read more

I've read the other reviews, and see why they describe this facility negatively. However, my physical therapist is quite good, familiar with my condition, and seems to adjust my exercises to meet my limitations and to build up strength. I am uncomfortable with the multi-tasking that goes on. My therapist works with me, then sends someone who may well be a volunteer, to monitor my work, then returns to see how I'm doing and get me started on my next set of exercises. I think I could tolerate the fact that you don't really get fill-on individual attention if all of the therapists weren't talking with each other about their weekends, their plans for the rest of the day, etc. It just feels extremely informal and unprofessional, so I end up wondering how much attention is really being paid to each client who is there. They could really clean up their presentation and make a much better impression. read more

This place is completely unprofessional. I spoke to the therapist , Angela, directly and indicated I needed the first appointment of the day as I work downtown. I showed up at 7:45 at her suggestion so we could get me in and out on a timely basis. Well at 8:13, she still was no where to be seen so I left...never to return. The first thing I noticed walking into this building was how filthy it was. The glass door was clouded with fingerprints, the carpeting was stained and worn down almost to the ground, and the walls were grimy, nicked and in need of fresh paint. The therapist I met with was super friendly and seemed very knowledgeable, but once again I couldn't help but notice the dirty pillow (gross) on the table on which she examined me. Because I was desperate to begin the road to recovery from back and sciatic nerve pain, I decided to give this place a try after my initial "assessment." BIG MISTAKE. Again, my therapist was friendly, but she lightly and barely massaged my back with ice cold fingers for about 5 minutes and then left me with a young boy who had a post-it note with a list of stretches for me to do - stretches that I had already been doing at home and could continue to do at home without a boy just standing there next to me with a timer. I was SO disappointed. P.S. On the second day, pillow had a large hair on it. read more

My son had a few month of therapy here, and it was a waste of time. The therapists seemed all very young and minimally trained, and the space was not equipped with much in the way of machines, etc. Finally ended up with knee surgery, and his current therapist who is the trainer at his college is working closely and he is progressing really quickly. The people are all very nice here, but really, for the cost of the "treatments", they could be doing a LOT more. read more

I've now been a client of three physical therapy providers in Oak Park, and Athletico is my favorite. Due to scheduling issues, I saw five different therapists here -- and every single one of them was excellent. Although Rae'lyn, Hunter, Kyle, Maureen, and Mara all brought different approaches and expertise to the process, each one was skilled, knowledgeable, and fun to work with despite the inherently not-fun therapy process. I loved the fact that, while the therapists here work with techs, they stay attuned to what you're doing the whole time and direct it (unlike the process at Body Gears, my least favorite of the three I've used). Even though I was bouncing around between therapists, they kept good track of my therapy regimen, so the process never felt inconsistent. They were also good at discerning when it was time for me to be done with therapy, and did not attempt to milk the process (and my wallet) to the last possible visit. The facility is very well equipped with all the various devices I needed to get better. All in all, you really can't go wrong with this place. read more

After years of going from masseuse to masseuse, I was happy to find someone who understands sports massage & knows how to work tired muscles.
