What began as a straightforward pinhole leak at a copper T-connection in my master bathroom, a repair that should have taken a competent plumber 60 to 90 minutes, devolved into a 7-hour catastrophe that left my home in significantly worse condition than before I placed the call. The technician arrived without basic copper fittings on his truck. For a professional plumbing company, this alone is embarrassing. What followed were three separate trips to Lowe's, three, accumulating somewhere between 30 and 40 copper fittings for a repair requiring perhaps three. The receipts, which I have saved, also include a charitable round-up donation billed to my account. That detail speaks for itself. With zero communication, the technician proceeded to cut into my kitchen ceiling and compound a simple fitting replacement into a multi-room demolition project. It became clear fairly early that I was watching someone learn on the job, in my home, at my expense, while my three young children were kept awake past 11pm by the sounds of sawing and banging. When the water was finally turned back on, the pipes leaked five times worse than the original issue. At that point it was nearly midnight, so I told him to pack up and leave, and called Roto Rooter dispatch to demand someone competent at my door first thing in the morning. The next morning is when I discovered just how brazen this technician truly was. Despite leaving my home with pipes leaking worse than when he arrived, he had told his manager the job was worth $5,000. After originally quoting $494 plus parts at the door. For work that was incomplete, harmful, and left my home without functioning plumbing overnight. Roto Rooter did send a second technician the following day. He was more composed than the first and was visibly taken aback by the mess he inherited. That said, this was not the swift rescue I was hoping for. He spent the better part of a full day sorting through the damage, had to make his own trip to Lowe's for parts, and did not finish until end of day. The job eventually got done, but a pinhole leak repair stretching across two full days with two technicians and multiple hardware store runs is not a standard anyone should accept. At the end of the day, Roto Rooter is responsible for who they send into your home. This technician caused extensive damage over seven hours, left my home in worse shape than he found it, and then had the nerve to tell his manager the job was worth $5,000 against an original quote of $494 plus parts. That is not just a technician failure. That is a company sending an undertrained, unprepared person into a customer's home and bearing responsibility for what follows.
