Our AC unit wasn't working properly so we reached out to a few companies and ended up going with Atlas Butler Heating, Cooling & Plumbing. What a mistake that was. The technician repaired our system without advising us of the cost beforehand. When the technician handed my husband the bill, he told him there was a glitch in their system and it wasn't showing our membership, but that the office would correct the discount. Within 20 minutes, I called the office because when we signed up, the representative told us the membership benefits were effective immediately. I left a message and finally received a call back today (holiday weekend, understood). The manager, William, told me that the parts are cheap, but the prices are marked up to cover their business overhead and to allow them to "make a small profit." He also said that even though the technician noted the system glitch on the invoice, the price we were charged was the correct discount -- and that the "trip fee/service fee" was billed because it was part of the job that the system glitch for the total job cost. William also advised that the job cost is higher because it includes their warranty on the part and labor. When I pointed out that I'm essentially paying for everything they claim they're "providing," he told me, "It is what it is." I asked to speak to someone above him, and he said there was no one, even though he is clearly not the CEO. @Michael Swepston would love to share this experience with you and hear if this aligns with your corporate mission and values. I told him to remove me from the program because I'm not doing business with a company that pretends to offer discounts and benefits but charges me for everything anyway. He hung up on me. This entire experience has been dismissive, misleading, and unprofessional. Called for service and what a terr experience. after an hour of diagnostics I was told I nee a new coil on a 3 year old AC unit. Best guesstimate was $5000. A sales representative could come to discuss the next day. if you have technicians they should fix and repair the units if applicable. Don't send sales redressed technician clothing. the possible $5000 dollar guestimate ended up being a bad thermostat. This company should be ashamed of using such tactics. Atlas butler technicians are very aggressive with sales, most likely because they work on commission. They repeatedly tried to sell me services and replacements for my equiptment that are absolutely not needed. I cancelled my service for tankless water heater service, because one years ago they said it could leak carbon monoxide (it didn't). This year they said it needed replaced and a valve was broken (it wasn't). Both times I had to pay for a plumber to come out and examine the units, and both times they said there is absolutely nothing major wrong with it. read more

The contractor came and quoted stated that I need to a new water heater that I change 2 years ago. During a routine annual furnace service, Atlas Butler technicians informed me that my gas furnace's heat exchangers were heavily rusted and needed replacing. Their salesperson then provided a quote of $8,147 for a new furnace and $18,004 to replace both the furnace and my AC. Given that AB had installed both units only 9 years ago, I was shocked to hear I'd need to invest in replacements so soon. I decided to get quotes from three other companies. Their estimates for the same furnace system ranged from $5,000 to $5,600. They also pointed out that rust is a common issue--often expected--after just a year (and mine is 9 years old). Since there were no leaks or critical problems, other companies assured me there was no immediate need for replacement. They suggested AB might be overstating the issue to charge me more than necessary. read more

Scam artists. I'm a subscriber to the Atlas Butler service club, which offers free/reduced cost maintenance on parts and labor. This week a technician reported my 4 year old air conditioner needed to be completely replaced. I asked how's that's possible on a nearly-new unit. He said "well let me go out and check again". He came back and apologized for misspeaking, and reported I had a faulty evaporator coil which would only be $2,000. I had another HVAC service come give a second opinion: there's absolutely nothing wrong with my AC. It's working and completely on point by every diagnostic standard. Not only that, but the silicone seal on the downstairs unit was unbroken, which means he didn't even check the evaporator coil, but somehow showed me a picture of one with a crack in it. This is not far from attempted theft. I'm angry, cancelling my subscription, and intend to escalate this. How many have fallen for this trick? read more

I'm extremely disappointed in the service I received from Atlas Butler, especially as a paying Preferred Customer. I called because a PVC water line unexpectedly broke under my kitchen sink. The phone representative was difficult to understand, and I had to ask multiple times for her to repeat herself. When scheduling, I made it very clear--2-3 times--that my husband's number must not be used because he is out of the country. I asked that only my phone and email be used for communication. Despite this, the confirmation was still sent to him. First red flag. The technician, arrived around 1:30. He smelled strongly of smoke and spoke very fast, making him hard to understand. He rushed through the explanation of the issue and provided one single option, no alternatives, and no detailed breakdown. This is not the level of care or professionalism we've received from Atlas Butler in the past. Then came the quote: $525 (after our 10% discount!). When I reviewed it, the pricing felt like blatant gouging. Example: a part labeled PBR 017a was priced at $156, but the same part at Home Depot is $5.15. I was stunned. When I asked for time to discuss things with my husband, the technician went to his van. We ultimately declined because the pricing and service were unacceptable. Atlas Butler -- this experience fell far below your previous standard. I would appreciate an explanation for the poor communication, the unprofessional technician behavior, and how such extreme price discrepancies can be justified. read more

I USED to be happy with Atlas Butler, but wasn't the last time they were here. And these reviews didn't change my mind when my AC wasn't cooling properly. Be advised that Atlas Butler locks down their heat pump system with their own special locks so that it is nearly impossible to have another company service your unit. Why???? I own my heat pump, not them. I should be able to choose who services my unit. Happily, we were able to get around that lock. So add another one star review to the tons they have. You should get repeat business because you offer quality service not because you are preventing another company from servicing the unit. read more

Do not recommend . They make you change your entire HVAC system which cost me $21,000 furnace is already broken after three days. I'm very disappointed with the quality. Really five negative stars. First this Attorney General material, and I intend to make that complaint. Our condo AC went out on a super hot weekend and Atlas Butler came out asap. Tech said the compressor was shot, and needed a "Starter Kit" for 1999.00, which would include cleaning and checking- - Luckily we have another home and were not trapped - my regular contractor came out later that week and said the system was fine, just a capacitor needed to be replaced, total cost w tune up/cleaning: 300.00 Do the math, and remember this was a 98 degree weekend, and the "we will be right there" is a literal trap, they know you are desperate. read more

I signed up for a service contract with Atlas Butler when I moved back to Columbus. The first time I had my A/C maintenance last June, I was told I needed a new system. Then, I called someone else for a second opinion and was told that the system was working well and didn't need to be replaced. Then, for the heating service in the late fall, I was told that I needed a new water heater because a light was blinking. Another company installed the water heater, so I called them, only to be told that blinking light is normal. Every time Atlas Butler was in my house, I was told something needed to be replaced at a significant cost, only to be told by someone else that things were working as expected. The final straw was that based upon the above, I didn't intend to renew my service agreement. I was told that the cancellation would be effective immediately, but would have to pay out the rest of the contract term. Never again. read more

These people are the WORST scammers I've ever run across as a homeowner. We had them in for a routine furnace service on our service contract, and the service person made up a story that our furnace's heat exchanger was failing and we had to buy a new furnace and the A/C is not too good either. The high pressure commissioned salesman quoted an insane price of over $16,000 for a no-name generic furnace/AC combo and recommended we buy RIGHT NOW (Note, this was to replace a furnace AB sold my wife only about 11 years ago). $16,000 is for an 850 square foot house! My wife set up the service contract before we were married. We got a second quote from a West Jefferson firm recommended to us. They quoted a high-quality brand name furnace and A/C fully installed for less than half AB's price. Oh, and that "failing" heat exchanger? I easily would have lasted another 10 years! Total Bullsh!t! Avoid, run away, caveat emptor! I fired AB and will never, ever call these schlocky con artists ever again. read more

On a recent service visit, the company condemned our 10-year-old furnace, citing a failed heat exchanger as the reason. They shut off the gas supply to the unit, labeled it as unusable until repaired or replaced, and disconnected a supply hose within the furnace, rendering it inoperable even if the gas were to be turned back on. This action was taken despite the fact that the heat exchanger in question is covered under a lifetime warranty by the manufacturer. The furnace was installed by this same company just 10 years and 4 months ago, and has received annual maintenance from them since installation. During the visit the technician strongly encouraged a full HVAC system replacement, stating that "they don't make them like they used to." They attributed the alleged corrosion of the heat exchanger to condensation in the basement, claiming it rendered the unit unsafe. Concerned by the recommendation, we sought a second opinion from another licensed HVAC company. Their technician found no issues with the heat exchanger and stated that the observed corrosion was normal and expected from regular system operation. Furthermore, they discovered that the system had been set to operate at lower efficiency and that the air intake was installed improperly, contrary to the manufacturer's installation instructions, which are still attached to the unit. We believe the Atlas Butler acted inappropriately by: - Misrepresenting the condition of the heat exchanger. - Failing to honor the manufacturer's lifetime warranty. - Disabling the furnace in a way that forced us to consider immediate replacement. - Encouraging unnecessary and costly system replacement. read more

Furnace repair: The good: fast response, friendly & courteous technician, fixed the issue. Materials were under warranty. The bad: technician said it was very complex work that would require 4 hours for one part, probably 1 hour for the other part. Per the Atlas Butler price schedule labor cost would be $1,500. I agreed since it was an Atlas Butler installed furnace plus cold weather may be imminent. The technician started work at 4:00 PM; he was done slightly before 5:00 PM, less than one-hour of labor. So $1,500 for one hour of effort. Since the technician has only worked for Atlas Butler approximately 3 months, I assume he misunderstood the price schedule rather than the company engaging in extreme price gouging. I will be contacting Atlas Butler management to address the issue. read more

We called them to change out some broken water valves for us. We knew we needed some lines replaced as well. We had gotten estimates from 2 other companies as well and AB gave the best price. They came in and told us our water heater was very old and should be replaced. We knew this was possible. They gave us a great price, lots of options for the work and warranty. The techs were professional and worked fast and did a great job. We had a gas inspection a few weeks later and they said the work was excellent. We look forward to using them soon for our vent cleaning. read more

Atlas Butler had no problem coming out to my house in Kingston, OH to do complete tear-out and install of a furnace, heat pump, dehumidifier, and allergen black light for over $10,000 about five years ago. But, now I'm out of their service area for a separate issue with a dehumidifier. To top it off, my warranty has now expired, so they won't even come out to service the equipment they installed. read more

Do not use Atlas Butler as we experienced predatory practices against elderly customers, including recommending unnecessary and expensive repairs or new equipment. AB quoted that our 7+ year old AB installed, and name plate furnace need a new heat exchanger. AB stated in writing 4 times the heat exchanger was not covered under any warranty as AB only covered 5 years and the manufacturing warranty was not transferable. AB documents from their tech, AB office and AB head tech all stated the heat exchanger was not covered under warranty and that the bill to replace was $3,251. Remember that it is an AB installed and name plate HVACV. I looked through the original paperwork which stated lifetime heat exchanger from the manufactured ICP. I called ICP, providing the furnace serial number and stated I was the 2nd owner - ICP quickly replied that the heat exchanger had a lifetime part warranty, even if I was the 2nd owner! AB tech also stated and put in writing we should just replace our 7+ year old HVAC and that AB could come out in the morning to provide a quote. Additionally, AB Tech wrote up that I needed to replace the furnace blower at $1,382 without providing any fault data. AB story changed multiple times from motor bad, to motor wearing out and finally maybe you do not need to replace. I fired AB the next day. After I created this saga on a Google review, the AB Tech sent me an email bashing me for writing the review. Now we feel intimidated by the AB team. Do not use Atlas Butler. read more

As a loyal customer of 20+ years, this week I needed service because my air conditioner, purchased April 2020, was not cooling my house. A technician identified problems with both my condenser and evaporator coils, attributing the latter to my male dog urinating on the outdoor unit, and gave me a repair estimate of $4100 then suggested I talk to someone in sales about replacing the entire unit. That was out of my budget so I called to schedule the repair. Shortly after, I got a call back stating that the estimate was wrong - the issue with the dog voided the warranty on the outdoor coil and the repair would actually cost $6300. I did not get the call back i requested from a supervisor; meanwhile, I requested quotes from two other local providers for replacing the unit. On inspecting my system, they both told me separately that there was no damage to the outdoor coil; all I needed was to replace the indoor coil - one said Atlas Butler "flat out lied" to me. Now I have absolutely no trust in honest service from their team and feel others should be aware of this questionable business practice. read more

we do not recommend Atlas. from day one of install, they tried to rip us off by not installing parts they should have installed. hooked up the condensation lines wrong, and furnace stopped working on day 2, they came back and spent 3 and a half hours redoing the pipes that lead outside. always trying to sell you something for the AC, or furnace. saying mold is growing in AC coils in furnace, and a $1,300.00, UV light will take care of the problem. $2,000.00 hot water tank went bad after only 5 years, (a commercial brand at that), replaced it with a cheaper one. and Other things we have not been happy with over the years. They told us we needed a new unit that would cost over $10,000 when it was only a $250 repair. Thank goodness we got a second and third opinion! I've tried to call to speak to a manager and the phone representative will not transfer me to a manager or call back me back after taking $90 from us and diagnose it in correctly. Our hot water heater went out, and we called Atlas for an estimate. They were prompt and we were able to track the technician as he headed to our home. All good so far ... then they gave us the estimate ... $5000 for a 50-gal and $6000 for a 75-gal!!! Our friend had a 50-gal, commercial grade hot water heater replaced 3 weeks ago for $1800. Needless to say, we went with another, much cheaper option and couldn't be happier. Guess if you live in a nice home and your water heater goes out on a Saturday ... pricing is adjusted accordingly!! Based on other reviews, it seems unfair pricing is a real problem for Atlas. At some point, you'd think they would change their business practices. read more

We called Atlas Butler during a cold night when our furnace went out. They sent a tech late at night and before he even looked at the unit he said "I know what's wrong with it" and shoved a camera in to find what he called a crack in the heat exchange without diagnosing the actual issue. He handed me a piece of paper that basically said if I turned it back I would be risking the lives of me and my family. He then sent a sales rep out within 30min to our house to sell us a new system. The sales rep was really nice at first and gave us 3 options. All 3 were quite expensive, $16-$22k with different warranty lengths. I signed up for the mid range unit to be installed next day and then realized this was nuts so I cancelled and said I needed time to do research. This got Mike (the sales rep) pretty heated and he called me. I asked if he would have his family members do research on buying a new car or if he would just have them buy from the first person he talks to and he said "Good day sir" as if to hang up on me, but he didnt and continued to do the sales pitch angrily basically telling me that my research was going to be invalid and they were the ONLY option in town. As you can see from the multiple reviews of this company they are the WORST option in town. My research turned up this: Atlas units are a sub brand of carrier that come with no warranty and then Atlas applies their own warranty. This brand is made for throwaway units, not high quality. Atlas uses this scare tactic with nearly everyone they visit to sell units. Atlas staff are only friendly if you are buying a system from them, otherwise they are rude and not helpful. NEVER CALL THEM FOR A SERVICE CALL NO MATTER HOW DESPERATE YOU ARE. Atlas trains their staff to look specifically for "hairline cracks" in heat exchanges to take pics to scare the homeowners. The tech even told me about this with some training in Vegas or by people from Vegas who train them to first look for cracks and ignore the issue if a crack is found. The crack was not a crack btw, verified by multiple other techs with over 30 years experience. The next day I had multiple technicians come out and diagnose the issue, it was a pressure sense ($40 part) and it fired right up. They ALL measured the CO due to the report that the heat exchange may be cracked, 1ppm was the reading on all of their $1000 devices and all of them said the unit would keep running just fine without risk to my family. We decided since the unit was 18 years old and did lack at cooling in the summer it was probably the best time to buy anyways and after doing my research and having 5 different companies come out for quotes. We ended up with a beautiful Trane system that was above and beyond what ATLAS offered in their $22k package and we paid less than $16K for all of it, including some pretty sweet air filtration upgrades that weren't even options at ATLAS. If you have read this far you hopefully know by now not to call them. read more

Tech explained the issue very clearly and gave us some tips on how to take some of the pressure off our unit when the humidity gets stupid high. The annual maintenance fee is well worth it. We have the A/C and furnace serviced annually and they've always been prompt, polite, and professional. read more

I've had been paying for a preventative maintenance program for years for the plumbing and air/heating systems, I had my new hot water tank put in 7/19/2019 and it was leaking just the day. I had just had the PM done on the tank a couple of months ago and the plumber said everything was fine and in working order, but come to find out, the tank had been leaking for a while, enough for the tank to have rusted out the whole bottom. I called to have it looked at and the plumber said they had set pricing and it was going to cost $2614.58 and that was after a $100 rebate. WOW!!! The tanks alone only cost $840. And any plumbing company buys hot water tanks in bulk to get a larger discount for bulk pricing. So general rule is cost of tank, equals the same price for labor, and Atlas didn't even check to see if it was under warranty, which it was, but since Atlas hadn't originally installed the tank, they wouldn't cover the warranty and still wanted to charge me the original quote. Ended up calling the manufacturer to see it was still warranted and it was, called Carr supply, where the tank originally came from and brought them the invoice and the label from the tank and they gave me a free tank and they would deal with the warranty return for me and I had another plumber install the new tank and it only cost me labor. Atlas Butler wouldn't even install it if I got the warranted new tank because it had to be one of there tanks to warranty the work. Totally not a good company to work with. It should be customer first, but not in their case. read more

I don't normally don't do reviews, but here goes. We were on their elite plan for a number of years and just this year that all changed. A furnace tech came in for an included furnace check-up. He then showed me photos he took of the heat exchanger and said it needed to be replaced to the the tune of over $500. I was suspicious. I said no. Then I had a 2nd company take a look and he said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the furnace! So I called Buttless Atler and cancelled my Elite Status. Later I received a call from their CS dept. wanting to know why I cancelled and before we hung up she asked me to refer friends and family. I told her absolutely NOT! These guys are dishonest grifters! And that's the truth. read more

My hubs called them bc our air stopped working. He called them to come out and take a look. The technician stated that the capacitor went out but there was nothing he could do bc our system is a 3rd generation model and needs to be replaced. He called a sales person out who tried to sell us a 20k system stating they could install it the next day. We called our home warranty to see if this would be something that was covered and to get a 2nd opinion. They sent a technician out from a different company and he replaced the capacitor within 15min and our air has been working better than it has all summer. It only cost us $100 bucks vs 20k. read more

We had a furnace issue. Called them to come help. Guys came out and said we needed a new motor. Sent someone to our house to sell a new unit instead of someone to fix it. They came and told us we needed a whole new unit, gave a whole spiel on how our furnace wasn't right for our house and how the motor was working so much harder because it was in the wrong spot. Don't worry, they could replace the whole system or just the motor, but we really needed a new system. We called a rival company, they came out and found two dead birds in our system. Took them out, 200$ total. Atlas charged us 300$ (which the technician claimed was a real deal) just to come tell us we needed a new unit and not do anything. I would 100% never recommend this company and will tell everyone I know. They also still will not give us a refund. The guys also sold us on the monthly plan which he claimed was only 32$ and never told us there were two cheaper options. Good times read more

I called about having someone come out for a sales call. Gertrude or whomever on the other end of the phone, mistook my needs and thought I wanted a service technician to help me "fix" something. She started quoting me "it's $89 for a technician to come out, then we'll..." Nononononono, I want a sales call for a quote on some stuff. And what do you know? Getrtude doubled down on her "we have to charge you to come out" talk track. So Atlas Butler wants to charge me to come out to quote me on whatever I need, including new equipment, to fix a ventilation issue in my old house. Good luck with that.
