I freaking love Atomic. I go there on Tuesdays and Fridays to social swing dance. I know the DJS, who are friendly and generally willing to take requests. Some Tuesday nights there is DJ's vintage music in the small loft, but you have to check around to see who's playing and who's going. When the conditions are right, it's amazing. I scheduled a private dance lesson for a party of 10 people as a special birthday surprise. Unfortunately there was a mix up and we were not able to take our class as expected. The owner called the next day and was very apologetic offering to do whatever he could to make it right. I started taking swing lesson here and couldn't be happier. The teachers are humorous, caring, professional, and personable. The crowd is always divrse ranging from teens to elderly...but mainly 20-30 year olds. Social dancing is always fun and people are very respectful. This place is good for beginnners to advanced. I first came to atomic in 2005. My friends were super into swing dancing but I thought it was the dumbest thing I had ever heard of. Also, I definitely could not dance at all so I was pretty uncomfortable with the whole idea. It took about 15 minutes of me being inside the building before I fell in love with dancing and 12 years later still go back whenever I can. Yes, Atomic is a dance studio. But for most people it's also a 2nd home, a family, a therapy session, a gym, and a candy machine. You'd be amazed at how people can change for the better after they start dancing at atomic. Lindy Hop is probably the most popular dance but even the other style classes and dances are still full almost everyday. Lindy hop is a super fun dance to start with but if you take the $20 new student special, you can try out every single class and dance they offer for a full week. My favs are lindy hop, west coast swing, and salsa! Atomic really unique in the sense that they are a dance studio with classes but also a super popular "nightclub" every night of the week. You won't find alcohol but you'll find super happy people of literally all ages often dancing until 2am--seriously. All of the teachers are specialists/experts in a few dances styles rather than being mediocre at 30 dances. There's usually a line out the door so I recommend getting there at least 15 minutes before your class/dance starts so you have time to sign in. Also they are super hard to find the first few times you go. Don't listen to google maps directions--they will totally get you lost. Enter on executive circle off of Main Street and make an immediate left and follow the parking lot around until you see atomic on your right. Don't take sky park circle, don't take executive park....etc. tldr: Atomic is the radest place in Orange County and known worldwide by dancers. You should go there right now whether you are a pro or barely able to clap your hands to a beat. read more

My wife and I have been going to the Atomic Ballroom a little over a year, averaging two to three evenings per week. Most of the instructors have won acclaim as dancers and are in demand as instructors. They make classes and private lessons fun and productive. They teach a wide variety of dance styles. The owners are creative and aggressive in promoting dancing in general as well as their business. They offer a wide variety of special events. They keep their patrons informed of and encouraged to attend other events as well. They add fun sides to evening dances such as exotic food trucks, potluck contests, recitals of upcoming wedding dances, cake and special dance each night for people with birthdays, etc. They provide a fairly wide spectrum of payment options spanning from per-class/lesson/dance up to half a year's inclusive, and including an awesome one-time introductory deal for newcomers that let's them sample a group class, private lesson, and evening's dance at an inviting price. The patrons are mostly friendly and are there for a wholesome, evening of dancing and socializing. Most are happy to dance with anyone, including beginners. On the social dance floor, it's not a contest - it's just fun. A good way to meet and make new friends. read more

I have been wanting to come here for years. I never did though, up until a spur of the moment decision to last night. Usually what kept me from coming was my lack of a partner (my boyfriend is too anxious to put himself out there in a group class, but he tried yesterday!!) and my own anxiety as a very tall woman who towers over everyone else. Our instructor was amazing! Very detail oriented, and even gave me some pointers on dancing with partners shorter than me (different positioning as a follower). I really enjoyed the class, and went into the Swing Spooktacular wanting to keep practicing what we learned (beginning Lindy Hop). Unfortunately, my boyfriend didn't catch on so fast and mostly we were stumbling on our feet and spinning out too much (sorry if we crashed into you!) as I tried to keep up with his too big steps as we turned. Probably not going to bring him along next time (unless he wants to? I'm 99% sure he only came because he knew I wanted to to lol). Interesting first time experience. Atomic Studio was recommended to me by a friend who knew I wanted to get into social dancing. This studio offers a great variety of classes for different levels with several options for class times. Rachel was inviting over the phone so I was looking forward to my first session here. I took the 7pm beginning bachata class. The instructors were great and provided a welcoming atmosphere. My only complaint is for Megan, the receptionist up front. I came in and told her it was my first time at their studio, after a quick "congratulations!" she gave me a release form to sign than asked for my $15. She didn't bother offering the new student special Rachel told me about, which is also promoted all over their website. I asked her about it, which she responded "oh yeah you can do that." I gave her my money, then she proceeded to help other guests without giving me direction with where to go. So I asked, and then she tells me to sign in, and left me hanging again. After some wait time and her giving me a look suggesting "Why are you standing here looking at me?" I had to remind her I've never been here and I needed to know where to proceed. After class I went back to her to ask what the procedure is to utilize the unlimited classes for the week and the private session. I simply got "Just come back and tell them" followed by silence. I had to ask how the other staff would know because I wasn't given any form of receipt. She shortly answered "your name is in our system". In summary, the check in and check out procedure was awkward. I didn't feel welcomed or informed. I was expected to know the studio's administrative system and floor plan prior to arriving. The class was great. I'll give this place another try. After all I came for class, not for the front desk. It wouldn't be fair to judge the whole business based on one person's lack of customer service. read more

This review is not for their actual dance instruction but moreso their customer service. I had purchased a Groupon for their school for 10 dance classes. I have always been interested in taking lessons from this place since it was so close to my work. I had gone in one day for a beginner's salsa class, which was a lot of fun. At the end of the class, my friend and I noticed that they had a flyer at the front desk for an all-day hip hop workshop a month from that day. So I asked the person at the front desk whether or not they would accept my Groupon towards this class. The individual at the front desk wasn't 100% sure, so he asked his coworker also at the front desk whether that was ok, and she said yes. So my friend and I both signed up for the workshop right then and there. The front desk assistant told us we were good to go. I was so excited about this class (I'd been looking for something similar to this for a while now) that I told another friend to buy the Groupon as well and take the class with us. She called in later to reserve her spot. They provided her with a confirmation number and told her they'd see her at the workshop. Fast forward a few weeks later, just 3 days before the actual workshop. (Mind you - there are 3 of us already who had been told that our Groupon would be honored as payment - one of which already had a confirmation number provided by the business provided via phone) My friend received an email from Atomic Ballroom because she was on their regular email subscription, and she happened to look at the email and the workshop we were attending in 3 days stated at the bottom that they did not take Groupon as payments for this workshop. I was very confused, as 3 of us were already told that Groupon were acceptable forms of payment. So I called Atomic Ballroom to confirm if we were still ok for the class. When I called, the individual who picked up the phone told me that he did not see my name under the roster. So I explained my situation to him (that I had signed up weeks earlier and one of their employees took my name and told me that everything was good to go). He simply told me that they didn't accept the Groupon, so that's why my name wasn't listed under the class. I was so confused that I didn't ask any other questions. Five minutes later, I called back because I wanted to explain in more detail to prove to them that their employee told us incorrect information. So I talked to another individual who picked up the phone and gave them exact details. I went to their 12:15 Beginner's Salsa class on February 9th. Unfortunately, I didn't remember the instructor's name, but he had a cool-looking hat. After the class had ended is when we signed up. Therefore, at around 1:15, a male and female worker were at the desk, and both individuals had told both my friend and myself that they would accept Groupon as payment. The response I got from their worker upon giving them all this information was the following: "Oh. That was probably Raul who told you that. He only works here once a week, so he told you the wrong information. We never accept Groupon for workshops. If you want a refund, you can just go through Groupon." I was appalled by their lack of customer service. And I feel that if they truly cared about their customers, they would have honored what their employees tell customers, whether it was correct or not. Again - this is not a rating on their actual dance lessons. I had a very good time taking the one beginning salsa class I attended. However, I am deeply disappointed in their management and was extremely offended by their lack of customer service even after acknowledging that it was in fact their employee who made the mistake, not the customer. read more

I came here on a Friday night on a double-date with some friends but had the entire first experience of swing dancing ruined by the receptionist. We decided on the Atomic Ballroom because on their website it said $16 for a class and the evening dance. We spoke to someone named Pat on the phone before coming who was extremely rude and kept insisting we needed to get the "New Student Special" which is $20 so you can take more group classes. When I explained to her (both over the phone and in person) that we are all very busy students and live very far away to be able to come back. The front receptionist, Pat actually charged us $20 after I repeated myself that we only wanted admission to ONE class, I had to ask her AGAIN that we only wanted ONE class. Pat became very frustrated and asked me "so you're sure you're NEVER EVER going to be able to come back?". She did the same thing to the couple we came on the double-date with and explained she charged us the $16 because she made an exception "because they are NEVER EVER EVER EVER coming back". I'm sorry to say that Pat's statement is unfortunately very true. I must say, that even though my evening was already ruined before the dancing even began, the class itself was very enjoyable. Our instructor Chris made it very easy for first time dancers like us, to get down the basics in one night. The open dancing at 8:30 was very fun dancers of every level were there and it was extremely enjoyable. I absolutely love swing dancing and my boyfriend and I cannot wait to try again but we will NEVER EVER EVER EVER be going back again to the Atomic Ballroom. read more

Walking in I was greeted by a not so friendly receptionist. There was also a guy next to her who was a bit of an ass. The group class I took was good but not great. It was loaded with patterns that most people couldn't remember, and because there was so little time focused on technique it was impossibly for most of the leaders to lead anything properly. I don't remember the instructors name but she was very good in explaining the steps out for everyone. I just wish there had been more technique involved. read more

If an above five star rating were possible, I would absolutely give Atomic Ballroom more. I've been coming here since 2016 as a teen and Atomic has given me skills and memories that I shall hold onto for the rest of my life. Starting with absolutely no dance experience or even interest in dancing did not matter for me, I already could not wait to come back and learn more. Chris, Kelly, James, Natalia, and Jofflyn are the best dance instructors for beginners and those looking to learn more advanced skills, and I couldn't recommend them more. The positive atmosphere and wonderful crowd has given me many friends that I've known for years. Pre-pandemic, finishing work on a Friday night meant that I get to go to my favorite place to dance and socialize (and even eat a slice or two of cake!). Missing being at a Friday night Lindy Hop social dance meant that my week was incomplete, so when the pandemic arrived, it was quite difficult to go without being there. Now that Atomic Ballroom has reopened, I can't go a week without being there. The only thing still missing is the cake! I came here for the first time on a Tuesday night, SUPER APPREHENSIVE for the swing dancing classes/social dance. Luckily, I came with a couple girlfriends and we took the Beginning/Intro class at 7pm, where we learned the basic steps (which I ended up forgetting once the social dance began, but that's okay). It was a good intro class, pretty small class (about 10-15 of us), and the instructors were genuinely interested in helping us. The social dance is at 8:30pm, and that's actually really fun, even if you've never done swing dancing before (like me) and have no idea what you're doing. The good thing about being a girl is, even if you come date-less, that's okay! It's totally okay to sit on the side and wait for a guy to approach you to ask you to dance (and it will happen - multiple times!) I've heard that the crowd is a little different on Friday nights when they also have swing dancing, but on Tuesday nights, it's definitely more of an older crowd. A lot of older/middle-aged couples come out, but you also see some younger people. Anyone and everyone will ask you to dance, ranging from younger guys, to older guys, to really old guys, but the good thing is, you can say Yes and dance with them and it's not creepy or weird. It's fun to dance with different people because everyone has a different style, and since the guys have to lead anyways, you just go along with whatever they do. Swing dancing is also a lot of spinning and twirling (on the girl's part), so it's super fun and a great time. The DJ is playing some classic, old-time big band/swing music and they dim the lights in the room, so it's really fun. I think the social dance goes until around midnight, so you can definitely be there for a couple hours. It cost $15 for the Intro class & social dance together, which isn't bad. I'd definitely recommend grabbing a couple friends (guys & girls) and heading to the Atomic Ballroom to try something new - if not swing, they also have blues, salsa, and other dances on other nights. I had a great time and the people are all so nice and friendly. read more

I've been to Atomic for the past 7 months and I'm still going. I have to say.. starting off first time at a dance studio is a bit intimidating, but once you get past that stage and meet some friends you'll feel this is the place to be to just dance the night away. My first class that I started in was Lindy Hop. It's natural to feel like you want to learn more so that you can really start dancing or feel comfortable on the dance floor, but honey, it's your first class and you're not going to know everything in your first class. Over a few classes, you'll eventually get better. I still suggest social dancing even when you're afraid that you may mess up and such. It's okay we're all out there to practice. I believe the beginners don't stay as long, especially the leads, because there isn't much move to do at first. I think just master what you learned for that night practice it out on the dance floor until you're comfortable, leave and be prepared for the next class. I've also ventured out and started learning West Coast Swing, Argentine Tango, Balboa, and Tap dancing. I just love them all! There are nice people in the social scenes, weird ones and there are also some cliques. Come by, dance and meet some cool peeps! They have many drop in classes depending on your interests but I highly recommend the series classes where the classes continue for 4-5 weeks with the same instructor on the same date. I've been couple dancing - as opposed to freestyling - for about 6 or 7 years. I've danced and took classes at several studio's in the area and beyond. There's nothing wrong with them. But the studio that feels like a party, that feels like you're among your extended family, every time I go there (3 or 4 nights a week), is Atomic! I like the modern look of the place, complete with colorful LED lights. And an incidental bohemian quirk. The main ballroom has a floating wood dance floor, which allows you to dance longer without having to nurse painful joints the next day. There's the overall comfort of the place with a/c and plenty of benches to sit. Free water (best to bring your own container) is a big treat. The teachers are kind and patient. They all earned awards for the dance(s) they are teaching. The young owner, Shesha, is hands-on. Delighted to teach a workshop or mc a party or a special event. He's also a marketing genius. Watch for those promotions! They are the most generous and no-strings attached in the business. Atomic attracts dancers of all ages. Most classes are very mixed. Maybe Lindy Hop will attract more young people to start off with and ballroom an older audience. But soon there's the curiosity to go watch or even try out whats happening in the all open side rooms. And before you know it, you're into a second or a third dance style. And you made many friends. read more

It's well worth the $10 to get into the Friday night big band swing. WELL WORTH IT! I've never been there for anything but swing, but their swing dance and intructors are supurb. The instructors were fabulous and could sense my tinge of anxiety, in response, they were so wonderful at making me feel that I was not left behind, comfortable, and encouraged. My husband and I have been taking classes here and at the Placentia location for the last 7 months. We have focused on Lindy Hop and Charleston Swing dancing, but they offer all sorts of latin and ballroom dance lessons as well. For those who haven't taken dance classes before, Atomic Ballroom offers a comfortable, social atmosphere to learn in. For those who have taken classes elsewhere, I believe you will find that Atomic's staff is more knowledgable and creative than other studios. The instructors all know their stuff- and each have an individual style. I'm confident that any person could find an instructor that they like working with- and if you work with different instructors, I find you learn different techniques and moves. My husband and I have taken the same classes over with different instructors and have learned entirely different moves. For me, it offers a the possibility to constantly learn and also to build on what we know. I actually feel like if I went there for the rest of my life I still wouldn't know all there is to know about dance. However, in just one quick month my husband and I were confident enough to get on the floor and try out what we know, and since then we've just been trying to work in new moves. They offer private, group and series classes, and weekend workshops. The group or 'drop in' classes require no commitment, and one can just drop in, pay for the class for that one night, and if there is a dance afterwards, free admission is included. Series courses are weekly and build on the prior weeks knowledge. They usually run for 4 to 6 weeks. Partners are not required and they work on a rotation system where periodically throughout the class they rotate partners. All in all, I think they offer classes that are good for the casual or the serious student. I'm impressed with the instructors, many of whom are world famous dancers. I recommend Atomic Ballroom to everyone I meet who has an interest in learning to dance. read more

I have so much fun every time I go here for swing nights on Tuesdays and Fridays. This is an ideal place for the beginning to intermediate swing dancer to enjoy a sweaty night of good music and good company. I've introduced several friends to Atomic and they have all loved it too. My experience as a beginner is that I have never been made to feel inadequate by more experienced dancers. Atomic has always provided a supportive environment for learning and fun. I came to Atomic in June of 2009 to learn to dance swing. I was matched with a teacher who I now consider a friend, and am still dancing. I am learning a skill I've always wanted, having fun in the process and making new friends. I love to dance and now I am getting better with every lesson. Those people who are writing the negative would have found that any school/dance facility would hope that you would sign up for lessons. Were they really so blind that they didn't realize that a $20 intro lesson, is only worth $20 dollars? These teachers work hard and their fee is worth more than that. I find these cheap skates complete idiots... To survive most dance schools have to pay teachers and cover the facility to offer anything to a large group. That doesn't grow on trees... If you are really serious about learning...then the fee is no more or less than any other school. read more

I especially like that after your lesson, you can stay to practice as they have a open dance time afterwards. If they didn't have that, I would forget everything by the next week. Monday and Thursday for West Coast Swing. Tuesday and Friday for Lindy Hop--this place is packed. Wednesday and Sunday for Argentine Tango. Ive been going to atomic for salsa lessons since May 2010 because I was going to Puerto Rico, the staff was very friendly and very willing to make you feel comfortable. I took private lessons with Carla, I recommend her for any male who wants to learn to properly lead a woman, and was instantly hooked. Private lessons aren't cheap but its well worth the money if you are dedicated to learning the dance. There are plenty of posts that breakdown their prices and what not so I'll leave that part out. The dance floor is very large, including an upstairs studio, and there is bottomless york peppermint patties :). They are very flexible and understanding of your life's situations and will adjust classes/lessons appropriately. The only thing about this ballroom that I could do without are 2 certain dance instructors who are loud, narcissistic, and rude to other people having lessons. read more
