Collect Magazine is a little bi-monthly magazine produced in Adelaide by a small team of 'do-ers'…read more Y'know, people who never sit around watching DVDs of Roseanne and eating fried food because they have things to do. Like make a beautiful magazine with matte covers and sweet watercolour illustrations and articles about the perfect picturesque small business. Josh Fanning (one half of the team behind the now defunct Merge Magazine) and Adam Johnson (expert classy designer) run Collect based on a fairly simple concept - the magazine is about little communities across the world and the small businesses and individuals that make them special. It is only stocked in stores that the people behind Collect love, which preserves the integrity of their association with other businesses. It's five bucks a pop (pretty damn reasonable) and you can get it in Adelaide at Bar 9, Imprints, The Deli, Coffee Branch and a bunch of other little spots around town. These guys have a habit of picking up on great little spots in Adelaide and profiling them before they 'make it big' - places like Red Door Bakery or Burger Theory. Some sections of this magazine appeal to me more than others. I have to admit I still have a touch of cynicism about the wholesomeness of it all - although I would say my values regarding small businesses are much the same as Collect's. The illustrations in the 'How We'd Do It' section always win me over - little annotated diagrams of how these guys would run their dream post-office or fish and chips shop or corner deli. The essays vary - some of the writers seem to have a stronger voice than others and some topics grab me more. Reading about the behind the scenes mechanics of running your own weaving studio and stuff like that is pretty interesting - although sometimes I'd like it to be a bit more real and a little less glorified. All in all though, this is a pretty damn fine magazine - the design in particular is impeccable - and I'm pretty proud to see it come out of Adelaide.

The new student rag at Flinders University, this magazine was born in 2008. The old Flinders Uni…read moremagazine, Empire Times, disappeared with student unionism, and Libertine is the new publication to take it's place. Libertine is currently published quarterly, and is funded by Flinders One, the Flinders Campus Community Services. An editor is selected each year and given a term of twelve months. Because it's so new Libertine struggled at first to get students involved and to get enough submissions. The magazine also relies heavily on advertising to supplement printing costs so the editor has to devote a lot of time to getting advertising. There are still a lot of things to be ironed out with this mag, it needs more content, more support, more people on the team, more advertising, more gags, more everything, But the students need to step up their game and show a bit more interest. The potential is there for a great mag that will be a huge benefit for the Flinders kids, they just need to get a bit of a hard on for it, so to speak.

Luckily, I have drive, a writing addiction, and important information given to me by customer attendants for previous reviews, to remember. Great store for a writer like me. I've been here before several times pretty much just for essential items like the odd multitrip bus ticket, stationery or magazines. The Rundle Mall Plaza Newsagency does feel a little bit empty each time and somewhere you don't want to hang around for too long. Upon walking in, you are emerged in a very quiet culture, complete with several rows of mindless magazines and greeting cards for less than half an hour of fun. I managed to walk around the crowd a bit, to get to the area known as "the great wall of pens", that holds plenty of different coloured pens, pencils, and other stationery. A perfect place to take a visiting guest or regular who has the "writing itch" to scratch off...it'll bring out the inner writer within.

Now, as a bloke, I've noticed that some news agencies have very little in the way of reading material for the fellas. They almost all, pretty much without exception, have stacks of women's magazines. That never really changes. A lot of places limit their mens range to *those* magazines that are wrapped in plastic (apparently to seal in the badness), and maybe a couple of magazines for the dude who likes V8s and other pushrod-powered dinosaurs. Not that's there's anything wrong with them. I've got some varied tastes as a car nut, but the same old Aussie muscle car mags just don't do it for me. So when I walked in here, I wasn't expecting much. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did they have some of the harder to get stuff (like some of the US based VW mags), they had plenty of copies of each. I walked out with my copy of ACVWs, Zoom and HPI, as well as a PC magazine. This place has some real variety. I'll be going back again next time I'm in Adelaide.

I usually drop in here in a hurry looking for some stationery item for work. It is a good work out as my supplies are usually down the back of the shop. They have a great selection of coloured paper, folders,tags etc. and I can usually find what I am after without having to venture to Officeworks. The owners are friendly and helpful. The only thing to be careful of is that I generally miss the entrance as it has a table full of gift ware, even though it is primarily a paper store, Having said that it also stocks a lot of touristy gift ware but it is not a place I would generally go to find a present. Tip: This is the place to go if you are looking for a hard to find or specialist magazine

I personally like to make my cards by hand, and their variety of coloured cards and markers is great for the artsy type. For those that feel that pre-personalised cards are adequate, they have a huge range of cards for all kinds of occasions. Their magazine range is equally diverse and caters to all interests, including music, cooking, handicrafts and sports. The shop all stocks novels and books, but the range is somewhat limited to bestselling titles. The staff are very friendly and aren't pushy - they're quite comfortable with customers flipping through magazines and having short reads through books. Probably the best aspect of this shop is the relaxed atmosphere, as there are few people in the store at the same time, and you have the freedom to quietly browse without interruption. Also available is a variety of gift goods, ranging from scented candles to decorative ornaments. Whilst these gift ideas are more appropriate for older generations, there are plenty of items that are ideal for younger generations too, such as notebooks and calendars.

First of all, it's always quite empty and I love not having many people around when browsing for something. Second, the shop assistants have always been very friendly. Third, it's clean, open and bright and everything is in impeccable order. And last - and most importantly - they have an amazing selection of newspapers and magazines. Their stock is not massive, yet large enough and it contains exactly what I'm after. I especially love their travel and cooking magazines and always have a very hard time just picking one or two. With book shops becoming as rare as hens teeth, its nice to actually find a place where you can browse a great selection of quality publications. Their books are definitely at the higher end of the scale with coffee table books Kramer from Seinfeld would be proud of. They specialise in graphic design, architecture and fashion books that if you don't feel the need to keep for yourself, also make great gifts. If the pricey books are too much for you there's usually a bargain to be found outside on their discount tables. As well as books they also have a range of quirky gifts and I find them handy on a Sunday or public holiday if I have to go to a birthday party and have forgotten to buy a present. Of course there are cards and wrapping paper along with the usual newsagency fare. I suppose its pretty standard these days but they also do photocopying and offer a fax service. Don't forget your paper and magazines. I've personally found them really helpful when I've gone in to buy Monday's edition of The Australian on a Tuesday - they always go out of their way to get a copy for me when they can.

The store sells the usual in wrapping paper, a massive range of cards including all the Hallmark varieties and the full selection of Australian newspapers. Aside from that however, they had a huge selection of journals and diaries, some at discounted prices now that it is getting into 2012. There is also a selection of kids toys and baby gift items which is unusual for a newsagency but well welcomed I think, and something that sets it apart from the others. The other thing I loved was the big range of those massive cards that are ridiculously too big and you get heaps of people to sign them. Alongside that is heaps of bulk buy invitations and thank you notes with heaps of designs and cartoon characters to choose from.

I got dragged into the West Lakes mall a few weeks ago with a friend who was picking up some frames (yes I'm a mall snob, sue me), and this newsagent made my foray into fluro-lit hell quite bearable. It was a nice surprise. Fash mags! Imports! Cute diaries! Pens! Perusers, stationery fiends and mall-haters alike will find something to tickle their fancy in here.
