Like make a beautiful magazine with matte covers and sweet watercolour illustrations and articles about the perfect picturesque small business. Josh Fanning (one half of the team behind the now defunct Merge Magazine) and Adam Johnson (expert classy designer) run Collect based on a fairly simple concept - the magazine is about little communities across the world and the small businesses and individuals that make them special. It is only stocked in stores that the people behind Collect love, which preserves the integrity of their association with other businesses. It's five bucks a pop (pretty damn reasonable) and you can get it in Adelaide at Bar 9, Imprints, The Deli, Coffee Branch and a bunch of other little spots around town. These guys have a habit of picking up on great little spots in Adelaide and profiling them before they 'make it big' - places like Red Door Bakery or Burger Theory. Some sections of this magazine appeal to me more than others. I have to admit I still have a touch of cynicism about the wholesomeness of it all - although I would say my values regarding small businesses are much the same as Collect's. The illustrations in the 'How We'd Do It' section always win me over - little annotated diagrams of how these guys would run their dream post-office or fish and chips shop or corner deli. The essays vary - some of the writers seem to have a stronger voice than others and some topics grab me more. Reading about the behind the scenes mechanics of running your own weaving studio and stuff like that is pretty interesting - although sometimes I'd like it to be a bit more real and a little less glorified. All in all though, this is a pretty damn fine magazine - the design in particular is impeccable - and I'm pretty proud to see it come out of Adelaide.

The Messenger is the little sister of The Advertiser and is so much better in a lot of different…read moreways. There are 11 Messenger mastheads in total and they cover all the major regions of metropolitan Adelaide, The Hills, and the further northern suburbs. The Messenger is largely about community news, and each paper only prints stories that involves, people or events that are happening in those suburbs. They are on top of everything going on the area and attend local council meetings regularly to get the most up to date information on things that affect those residents. They also have a strong sport focus and have a number of dedicated sports journalists who cover all the amateur sport in Adelaide. They feature a wide range of sports, especially focusing on members of the community who have excelled or have an interesting perspective or story. There are suburb offices for most of the papers and they welcome the public to come in and have a chat. They also follow up story ideas posted by residents on their website and these can end up being on the front page if it is newsworthy. The papers are also free so if you missed your weekly delivery just pop into your local suburb office and they will be happy to give you a free copy.

And I know the job adds posted in there also show up online in searches so they're not desperate to check quickly even if you are job hunting. The best thing and the reason I love the messenger............it's where you can find a local to do anything! All the local tradies are in here including a lot of older, very well skilled and still perfectly capable, plus they usually have old school service which is fantastic. If I just have a small job and I can hire someone local I would prefer to do that. Plus their prices are normally better as well so you also get to save some $$. In addition a lot of them will be really flexible on times they will come out for you, which I always found handy when I was working full time and had to organise things after hours as I could not easily take time off.

The Printing Hub are located on Magill Road down and across from the Maid, and I found they had not only low prices but a very fast turnaround from ordering to pick up. Our contact there was a little wacky and tended to take a while to reply to emails, which was a bummer, but considering I got quotes all over town and this was by far the cheapest, I couldn't complain about email delays. The paper and ink quality was always top notch and the accuracy was pretty spot on. I'd recommend these printers to anyone.

Scattered around boutiques and cafes four times a year, Attitude (not to be confused with the UK…read moregay mag of the same name) is Adelaide's solitary fashion magazine - free or otherwise. And for that I give it all my support and fist bumps! It's got the gloss you come to expect from a fashion-focused title, and for a free magazine it's very impressively put together. As Liz mentioned the photoshoots are always professional and beautiful, the product top notch, the stock great quality. Personally I absolutely love some of the style features and style icon pages... with PJ Harvey, Jerry Hall and The Like all cited as icons it scores some major points with me. I think Attitude is finding its feet in terms of its own identity: it follows the traditional idea of what a fashion magazine should be without many major surprises. I'd love to see it do some really brave, original content and make its own mark. The team obviously know what they're doing and I think would be more than capable of it. It's a great snapshot of the fashion scene in Adelaide, as well as lots of info on bars, creative types, events and the like. Get involved and support Adelaide fashion.

The magazine is free (for now) and quarterly, and is stocked in a range of stores and cafes around the city. Now I must admit we do have a bit of a giggle at some of the articles in here. Of all the Adelaide street press I'd say Attitude is the one most lacking in irony. Then again fashion magazines have always had a thing for taking appearances a little too seriously so I shouldn't be surprised. As far as the look goes I think Attitude is well pretty. The photo spreads and layout are always interesting, beautiful and professional. You look good and you know it, don't you Attitude? According to their Facebook Attitude's main interests are 'sun, sand, beer, tan lines, tunes and love.' They could probably have saved some space there and just written 'summer.'
