Went to Atwood Barbershop for the first time today. Firstly, I've moved to Madison within the last 6 months, so it's been a lot of trial and error with barbers. Today I tried my luck with Terry and it paid off tremendously. The shop itself is dope, lots of natural light and art on the walls. Very welcoming vibe from Terry and the other barbers. Gets to know you in the chair while cutting your head with care. I've found a reliable barber for sure lol. Definitely check them out if your looking for a clean haircut. read more

Was driving through Madison on my way back from Christmas and decided that I should get a haircut while I was in town. My visit was prefaced by a very short but straightforward phone call. I called asking if they have any openings, to which the man responded, "We take all walk-ins," perfect for an impulsive man such as myself. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a very laid-back atmosphere that put my nerves at ease. After a short 10-15 minute wait, I was able to get into Tony's chair. Tony was very courteous, asking my name and making small talk. After a short consultation (how do you style your hair, how do you want it, etc,) Tony got right to work. Once he was finished, I couldn't recognize myself in the mirror. Tony absolutely nailed it. He achieved a look that I didn't even realize I was going for. I 100% recommend Atwood Barbershop, and I will be getting my hair cut here from now on, despite a two hour drive. read more

Not normally one to want to complain, but wow today I received the worst haircut I've ever had today from Tony. I asked for a simple fade and to line my part. After multiple times of saying what I want And this is the "fade" I unapologetically received. For $27 I will definitely be finding myself a new place for a cut. I have followed A.J. from the College Barber shop on State Street to this location! He is a pro, and worth the trip if you don't live in the East side. Straight edge cutting skills too! Check out the sweet mural in the wall while you're getting your haircut. There are two barber chairs right now, plenty of seats for waiting. When I walked in, I saw a kid getting his haircut. First of all, the information on Yelp is not accurate. Atwood Family Barbershop is open Tues-Sat 8.30am-5.30pm. The telephone number is 608.772.0568 Atwood Family Barbershop has changed owners a few times over the last decade. I started patronizing under the previous owners, and continue to under the current owner, Terry. This is one of the few barbershops I have ever been to that is multicultural. Terry is a skilled "black" barber which is a very specific art, but is an expert at all hair types. The clientele is very diverse in age, race, and culture. This is also a barbershop in the historic culture sense-- people drop in just to hang out, talk crap, watch sports, etc. There is a lot of joking among the regulars. In an era of Walmart and SuperCuts this is becoming lost-- the neighborhood barbershop that is also a social center of the community. Prices are reasonable-- under $20 for a shave and a haircut-- but do not expect to get in and out in a hurry. Take a number and wait for your turn. There are no appointments. I usually allow for an hour or two to wait and get cut. You can also take a number and return before your number is called, but if you do not return in time, you lose your place. There are often several people waiting in line for them to open in the morning. There is WiFi, and neighboring Wilson's Bar & Grill is friendly to barbershop patrons. There are also vending machines. There are several TVs, usually set to ESPN. read more

I have been coming to Atwood Barber Shop for over 3 years now and Terry does an amazing job at cutting my hair. He is very detailed when it comes to the fade and lining aspects of the haircut. His prices a more than reasonable for the effort he puts in. The only downside is that there is always a line.. You have to come early or be willing to wait. The nice thing is that he has multiple TVs to watch. Even with the wait, I will continue to come back because Terry is truly a skilled barber! read more

Awesome barbershop, every cut I've got from AJ has been extremely clean and detailed. I usually just get a fade on the sides and back, which has consistently turned out the way I asked for. *Waits can be pretty long after 3pm on weekdays, so just plan around that. *Also it's cash only. read more

The haircut is excellent. The distinguishing feature is the sense of community. When I've been there, the conversation among the patrons and barbers is lively, varied, and intelligent. Many seem to know each other. If a politician were coming to town to get a haircut and shake hands they should probably come here to set up their photo op. There is a snacks and soda machine in the back for when the line is long. I've been there at peak times when the wait is three or four people ahead of me but since part of the point of coming here is to enjoy your community, waiting gives a little more chance to do that. There's a graffiti mural of the Madison skyline on the wall inside the shop. Last time I checked the owner was unhappy with how it turned out and was having it re-done. read more

Cool place, BUT Jason did not listen to beard trim request at all. He cut it way to short on the sides (which I specified not to do) and then could not tapper it into my chin. I asked for a trim and a shave. I never got the shave. WTF--that's why I went to the barber! He cut my sideburns way up into my very long hair. read more

Classic quality barbershop: simple setting, quick turnaround, solid attention to detail, and the right price. I went in on a Thursday morning around 8am. Waited maybe 2 minutes, got my cut from a very friendly woman (yes, a woman, so that's a bit of a departure from most 'barbers' I suppose... but who cares as long as it's done well) who was great with conversation, did a great job with all aspects of the cut, and kept up that attention to detail that the good barber shops have with the straight-razor neck clean-up, the clippings vacuuming up, and the alcohol after shave. I gave it a 4 out of 5 simply because there is another 'level' of barbershop that exists out there... but I will be back to this one again and again. read more

I love this place. After nearly four years of rotating between Madison's overpriced trendy "barber shops" I tried this place, which was in my neighborhood all along, and am kicking myself for not finding it sooner. AJ has cut my hair twice and he is very skilled and efficient with a fade, line up, beard trim. Nice guy and friendly too. Terry, who owns the place, greets everyone who comes in and it's overall just a fun atmosphere, a real community meeting spot. It can get a little crowded but they're good about cutting hair in the order you came in, and also there's a lot of chairs plus a vending machine so just sit back and enjoy your wait. It's one of the most culturally diverse places in the neighborhood and I really recommend it. Unfortunately I am about to move out of town but I will definitely come back and see AJ whenever I come back to visit Madison. read more

I have no reason to find another barber shop in Madison anymore. Seriously though, Terry and AJ are both super cool guys. I ended up getting my haircut by AJ and I am more than pleased. I am usually unsure on how to explain what kind of haircut I want, but somehow through all of my vague requests, AJ nailed it. He is super laid back and gives a great cut.
