Josh is probably the most caring and attentive teacher I've encountered. He's my first guitar teacher but far from my first music teacher, and I had originally chose him out of a recommendation from a friend. Josh provides both in-person and virtual lessons and different lesson packages that tailor to your learning needs. I purchased a flex lesson package (meaning you get a certain number of lessons that you can use any time within a certain time period). Josh has a way of spending time both within and outside of class to ensure that he's exceeding your needs and you're actually learning. He's great with kids too! Josh has been an excellent teacher. Guitar lessons is something I've been wanting to do for years but was intimated by it. I had next to no experience when I began, and Josh was very accommodating and understanding of my level. Josh moves you along at a comfortable pace that really helps you understand what you are learning while also keeping things fresh and exciting. I had been playing guitar for about 15 years but hadn't felt much progress in a long time. I decided to take lessons with Josh, and I feel I've progressed more in the past 2+ years than I ever have! Josh strikes a great balance between holding me accountable and being patient/understanding as other things in life pop up. He's helped me get better technically, musically, and with my theory understanding. He's also helped me explore different styles and genres that I might never have come across otherwise. All around, I've become a much better, more well-rounded guitar player. He's great at working towards things that fit with a player and a style rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Given my length of playing, this is great -- I feel like he's been able to double down on my strengths and focus on what can be improved rather than having to reset everything back to fundamentals. My 9-year-old daughter has been taking online guitar lessons from Josh for 10 months and we've been very pleased with Josh's professionalism, talent, and fast communication. My daughter has been learning from Josh for about 2 years now - the progress is amazing. He keeps the work entertaining and is always open to trying new ideas for keeping the work fresh. After my retirement I wanted to get back into music, not only for my own gratification, but also to keep myself challenged and engaged. I'd been in the high-school band decades ago, and I had studied piano in the past, but this time I wanted to venture into something that was unfamiliar, and frankly, even a little scary for me: guitar. There are a lot - a LOT - of folks calling themselves guitar instructors in the Austin area, but I got lucky and found someone that I believe to be one of the best. Josh is the real deal - he is classically trained, has a university degree in guitar performance, and is an impressive musician in his own right, but that's not what makes him a great instructor. I believe that in addition to his musical talent, he has a talent for teaching. He approaches his students as individuals, and creates lesson plans that are designed to help each student achieve their personal goals. For instance, I not only wanted to learn to play, but I wanted to delve into the finer points of music theory, too. Josh was happy to accommodate, and has been patiently working with me to develop my skills with both the music and the instrument. I started out as a complete beginner on guitar at the age of 57, and after just over six months of weekly lessons, I'm amazed at what I've been able to accomplish. To be sure, I've got a long way to go, but it's not intimidating anymore. I know now that with Josh's skilled, individualized instruction, I've got a path to an enjoyable and rewarding pastime and that I can accomplish what I set out to do. read more

I started taking classes with Josh as a complete beginner, and have taken lessons with him for 8 months. Stopped only because I moved out of town. Could not have asked for a better teacher. On the first lesson, went over my goals for learning guitar: what type of music and what songs I wanted to learn, what style of playing. Also whether or not I wanted to learn music theory. He made a structured learning plan tailored to my interests. During our weekly sessions, we would go over the exercises, songs, riffs, theory chapters...etc that I had from the lesson before. He would comment on my progress, show me what I'm doing right as well as what I'm doing wrong and how I can improve and/or correct. He would correct my playing technique, and elaborate on the theory reading for that week and make sure I correctly understood what I read. Songs that I liked and wanted to learn were custom-fit into my learning plan whenever appropriate in terms of difficulty and technique, which made the learning experience much more enjoyable. He is extremely patient and encouraging. While taking classes with him, I not only significantly improved my playing ability, but also gained a much better understanding of music theory, and how complex it and guitar-playing can be. At the same time, I have gained the confidence that I can learn much and improve greatly with the right guidance and enough practice. If you are looking to take guitar lessons, I cannot recommend Josh enough. read more

I am an adult student and have been learning guitar for a while. I really hadn't progressed much over the past couple years and was debating about quitting. I started lessons with Josh and he made some (not so obvious to me) adjustments and I am improving again and really enjoying it. He is a really rare combination of being really personable and really analytical so he is able to break things down into really doable steps so you are progressing from week to week. It used to be that I would try to tackle a song and have to just skip parts that were "above me." Now, I playing things that I was not capable of a few months ago. I was trying to think of pros and cons for people looking at different teachers but I wouldn't really know what to say for the cons. If you are new to guitar, he is a great choice because you won't get buried in mistakes or bad techniques that you will have to unlearn later. Basically, I wish I found him sooner. If you have been playing for awhile, he is skilled to push you into different genres or on to new levels. read more

Josh is an awesome teacher! I started taking lessons from Josh about 7 months ago as a total beginner on the guitar. In our intro lesson, he asked me what my goals were (basically sing and play at the same time!) and has done a really great job structuring our lessons around what I want to do. Josh packs a ton into our 30 minute lessons--we play out of the lesson book, learn chords, practice techniques, and he usually gives me a fun song to sing and play. He's really good at pushing me out of my comfort zone to try new things (blues improv!) and is always very patient and positive. Learning from Josh is like taking lessons from 3 teachers. First, there is the playing part where Josh balances the lessons between technique, songs and my ability to play them. It comes as a well thought out plan and builds the foundation for incremental improvement. Second, there is the theory where Josh is able to add the 'why' to what we're doing in the playing part. It's a lot of info and impossible to comprehend at once but Josh knows when to mention music theory while playing to make the concept easier to understand. Finally, you get a musical mechanical engineer. Josh is able to look at the mechanics of the playing, whether pick location, wrist vs. elbow, elbow vs. shoulder, tension vs. fatigue and tune things in so that bad habits don't develop. Josh is great. Gives a free intro session to get a feel for what your goals are and what kind of music you want to learn. He is happy to work on whatever you feel that your goals are, and is happy to switch up those goals if you discover there is something new you want to learn. He began by asking for a list of bands I'd be interested in learning songs from and then writes up sheet music (along with tabs) for you to learn from. I personally wanted to work on my technique as well as simply learning songs and he was happy to throw in pointers along the way while going over the music. I also wanted to learn music theory so he gave me a few books to pick up and we worked through them week by week. We discussed the readings and he cleared up any confusing points clearly. He prints out his own worksheets for theory to work on between sessions, and then goes over your work to make sure you understand the concepts.
