Same comments as other people have said, I don't really feel welcome here and it seems like they don't really want people's business? It's not a rude or hostile environment but could improve on being welcoming to all kinds of people. As far as stock goes, they have a lot of board games, warhammer goods, some ttrpg books, and some cards for mtg/yugioh. It's like these guys don't want your business. I rarely feel welcome as they never greet me when I walk in. they just act like I'm not there. goodluck trying to start a conversation, you'll find that it's very one sided. Today I asked if they had any deals and the guy said "yeah 15% off like the sign says". It's Just not the vibe you want if you're looking for a fun game store to shop or play at. SOCIAL DISTANCING REVIEW: we cannot believe the incredible service we just got from Wonko's. The doors may be locked but they are still open. My husband knew they were near us and found them on Facebook- knowing we wanted a few new family games but not knowing which ones, my hubs Facebook messaged the owner for advice. What a quick response! We let the owner know which games we wanted, we paid for the games via PayPal this morning and the owner sanitized all the boxes, put them into a fresh bag and just dropped them off at our doorstep (10ish mile delivery radius with exceptions for beyond) with a text to let us know he did. We now how have hours of quarantainment (see what I did there?) and were able to support a true Austin original. Now go forth and support local businesses! read more

Dropped in for a game night last Wednesday during a business trip, which I found through Meetup. I have to say--very friendly gamers at Wonko's, I really love the idea of the $5 cover charge to drive a more serious/committed behavior (which can be used towards in-store purchases; Wonko's has a great selection of games to buy also) and the space layout was nice and not packed too closely, like some game stores I have visited in the past. I did a run of Terraforming Mars and two of the experienced gamers at the table helped talk me through the expansions we were using (Prelude and Colonies); I'm the same way when I know a game well and want to get more people excited about the game so it was nice to meet like-minded people. If business ever takes me back through town I will be sure to come back for this game night! read more

If you're looking for board games and tabletops, this place is amazing!! They have a massive selection of tabletop models and the largest retail selection of D&D books I've seen, as well as tons of dice, and even plushies. I got some awesome locally made scented dice as well as a couple token sets that weren't available elsewhere. Their prices are below MSRP on average, and listed on the products with clear stickers comparing the two. Easily the best deals in retail hobby shops I've found! Really neat little toy store that manages to pack in a great assortment of stuff. Lots of games and collectibles (e.g., figurines). I understand they actually host game nights here. Been coming here for their Wednesday night meetup event. It's free gaming with lots of board games available. Great group, excellent venue, lots of fun. I only wish they had a better vending machine, a coffee/beverage bar, and more ways for me to support them with $$, even if I'm not buying new games or card sets. read more

I'm not a gamer by the standards of most people going to a store like this, but I do enjoy something different every once in a while. While I thought most places that have a niche usually welcome new people with open arms, this place was not one of them. I played the game Munchkin with my friend a while back and fell in love with it. I just HAD to have it. I did my research on the internet and found a few places that sold the game (i.e. Target online, Amazon, etc.), but there were only two stores in Austin that seemed to sell the game. Since I live within a mile of Wonko's, I figured I would stop by to see how much they were asking for the game. Me and my boyfriend walked into the store, perusing the aisle, looking for the game. Finally, we see the overloaded display full of Munchkin stuff. I find the original game, but there is no price tag on the box so I ask the lady behind the counter. She tells me it's so much which was a bit pricier than what I found elsewhere on the internet. I stepped back to think about it and discuss the investment with my boyfriend when they kept trying to sell the game to me. I finally replied, "Yeah, I'm just thinking about my options. I can buy the game online at Target for about $7 less." This is where the fun really began. The guy behind the counter immediately started getting extremely defensive, telling me about how it doesn't support local businesses and how the creator of the game would be appalled that I didn't IMMEDIATELY go to them. Look, I understand supporting local businesses (I'm the 99%!) but I also prefer to save a few dollars when the good is the EXACT same. The lady behind the counter, which I find out is the wife to the guy, chimed in a few times with a few remarks, but nothing nearly as bad. She turned the sale around, bringing in a more positive light rather than the obnoxiously negative tone set before. Although they are appreciated by the creator of Munchkin, Steve Jackson (who lives in Austin), they did have a holier-than-thou attitude that was not appreciative. It's easier to support local businesses that treat you like a human being rather than a number, or worse, scum. I guess the gaming world is not for me. read more

The entire staff is full of friendly people, and it has an amazingly casual atmosphere. Events are pretty professional, and it feels like a second home. They have a lot of cool stuff that's pretty unique, and they're extremely family friendly. I'm a very shy person, but everyone there is friendly enough to help me come out of my shell!~ Highly recommend stopping by at least once, to goof off or to get some nice collectibles. Wonko's is the only reason to go to north Austin. Well, ok, one of *few* reasons to go to north Austin. A stellar collection of vintage and new toys and games. Stikfas, Star Wars, Zombies, Dice, board games, japanese stuff, batman... an eclectic mix of stuff, all reasonably priced. I wanted a 12 inch stikfa figure, and they sold out - so they special ordered me another one! They also buy and take toys as trade. I would say this is a toy store more geared towards adult collectors rather than kids, but they still have tons of stuff kids would enjoy. Great selection, helpful staff, fun toys! read more

I visited this store yesterday after calling them to check if they carry the Hot Toys brand of collectible figures. Pros: Neat store, super friendly and courteous staff. Good selection of some odds and ends. Not into board games myself so not sure what the scene is on that but there were some people last evening and it did look like they were having fun. Cons: January 20th I was in the store and interested in a certain figure they had on display. Upon checking the price it is $150 over MSRP (which is almost 100% profit right there) and almost $219 profit since the actual purchase on these is a lot lower than MSRP as I have friends who are volume dealers for Hot Toys. I was offered a 10% discount on January 20th on their store price (yes their store they can make whatever price they want); I left my number and said I will need to sleep on it and come back tomorrow if I am interested. Thought about the pricing for a bit last night and said to myself what the heck. Its a local business they need to pay for staff, rent etc etc so its ok to pay them what they are asking for after discounts. Well I went to the store this morning at 10AM and waited till 11AM (my fault for not checking they open at 11AM). The staff greeted me and was super courteous (5 stars for that) but did not have the authority to honor the offer that was made to me yesterday. She had to call the store owner who I believe advised the staff to check Amazon third party seller prices and eBay listings (come on is this a retail store or a pawn shop?? also its not an indication of the current average selling price). The owner flat out refused to consider the fact that its way overpriced and did not even honor the discount he offered yesterday. I had to respectfully deny and walk out of the store. Waste of 50 miles driving back and forth twice to be part of the shop local rage. Good luck Wonko's Toys, I am sure you have bunch of patrons but you just lost a potential future customer who could have brought you at least $4000 plus in business every few months. Next time somebody asks me to support local businesses I will ask them to think twice. I was born in the night but not last night (not my quote but its relevant). read more

Wonderful neighborhood gaming store with really active game nights. The boardgame night gets quite a crowd for a store this size, which is wonderful. The Magic: The Gathering nights are even busier. They also have a good selection of action figures and a reasonable selection of role playing books in addition to a decent size boardgame lineup. Great store. read more

Disclaimer: I'm only reviewing the board/card games here although they have Warhammer, figurines, magic cards, and RPGs. Also, the place is dramatically smaller than Dragon's Lair and doesn't have the specialized games and accessories you'll find at Great Hall, but what it misses in size it makes up for in one very specific area: buying games. The wide types and varieties of board games now available makes for a sort of golden age of this type of game, but they also tend to overwhelm you with options. This happened to me with comic books years ago. Once I fell out with them initially, it was almost impossible to get back into them without blowing a bunch of money on stuff I don't like. With board games, you never know what's going to resonate with you or what's going to work with your group. Is it too big, too competitive, too short, too few players, etc.? The owner Eric is amazing at this. The times I've come by, I've been very happy with his advice. He can give you the background, his experiences, and his interest. He can say what's good about a game and customize it for groups of many sizes. I even had a game that I already purchased that was proving too tedious that he encouraged me to stick with through the initial complexity/confusion. It's a big help and the reason I'll keep coming back. One of the other employees, Becka also pointed me toward one of my long time favorites. read more

Wonko's has always been a very nice place to meet with others and play games. It is also a nice place to buy games. The staff is friendly and for being a small store it has a lot of room. They stock all types of boardgames and Magic and War Hammer stuff. They now carry things for kids as well. read more

Excellent little game and collectible toy store, right down the block from the Lake Creek Alamo Drafthouse theater. I think they've changed owners in the last year or so and the current one is a very out-going energetic individual who generally seems interested in supporting the local gaming community of north Austin. They have a small yet growing collection of board games and card games (Magic, Agricola, Settlers of Catan, and occasionally some old out of print SPI and Avalon Hill games), some Warhammer 40K, and loads and loads of new and rare collectible sci-fi and fantasy figures (Todd McFarlane, Star Wars, etc.). Wonko's also has a deal when you spend over a certain amount in the store ($150?... and not all at once), you get a $25 off bonus on your next purchase, a very nice gimmick that keeps me going back. I'm always very happy with the customer service at Wonko's unlike some of the other gaming stores in Austin (see my reviews). The owner seeks out feedback from visiting customers on how he can improve his store and how he can make the experience better including sponsoring Warhammer painting seminars and new board game demos. I highly recommend the drive up to visit them especially if you are headed to see a film at the Lake Creek Alamo Drafthouse. read more

Not really a toy store, as much as a collector's store. Most figures would run you about $20, at a minimum. They have some cool vintage toys also. They are big on boardgames, Warhammer, and Magic. There's some RPG stuff, but that's not the focus. There were Magic games going on while we were there--it's not a huge space, but people seemed to be having fun. It looks like they might expand soon. The employees were super nice and helpful. My only wish is that these places had more stuff for kids, too, but Wonko's seems to do what it does very well. read more

First visit to this awesome game shop as I was on the hunt for a great Christmas gift (very last minute on Christmas Eve!) They had a great 'gift ideas' section and a ton of selection. This is a great store and such a friendly atmosphere. Eric, the owner, and his family knew me by name after not too long of going there to play games and have always provided a great family atmosphere. I sometimes bring my kids (ages 2 and 7) and they are always welcome (Eric, et al, know their names too). Beyond just the store, you can tell that Eric has a love of what he does and the games in the store are a passion for him. If you need help with anything geek culture related, Eric will take time out to give you a hand without being pushy about it. I'll be honest, I can find better prices on stuff on-line, but always make sure to make purchases here as I definitely want this store to stick around. read more

While not the largest shop in town, Wonko's does have a home-y feel that a lot of the shops I visited in Austin lacked. They also had the largest selection of action figures than any other shop which is probably why the word toys is in the title.. A lot of the usual merchandise like Star Wars and Batman but found some really cool Halo and Gears of War figures too. The one caveat about this place is that when a tournament is going down, it's too crowded to walk through. I couldn't see most of the stuff in the back because it was so packed. Not really Wonko's fault but they are in definite need of an expansion. read more

There is a huge amount of table space to play games in the store. The owner encourages this and participates regularly. There is plenty of parking and food options in the shopping center. This is a wonderful little toy store I have been loyal to, for several years, now. It has a new owner, Eric, who took over a few months ago, and he is super nice! He has a wide variety of new and vintage toys, from fantasy, to sci-fi, as well as various movie characters. It is a fun adventure every time my son, husband, and I visit! It is my favorite place to shop in North Austin, and one of my very favorite toy stores. It is locally owned so show your support and stop in! Eric also runs many types of games, during the week and on weekends, for those who are old school, and like to play games with others in person. This place definitely made me feel welcome since they were in the middle of moving and they still took the time to let me look around and purchase stuff. I came here after seeing this place on the TV show Toy Hunter hoping to score some vintage toys. They don't have the hugest selection of vintage and the good stuff they do have are a bit overpriced. Half of the place is dedicated to role playing gamers, there were a lot of them in the back intensely going at it. Not my cup of tea but they seemed to be enjoying themselves. I have to say I was a bit disappointed overall with Wonko's. Maybe the Toy Hunter guy was right, all the good stuff is locked up in the storage room in the back. Boo. read more

I really love the new store location and the goodies. It is run by a fun family and always has lots of events. I could browse the toys and collectibles for hours. Wonko's has a nice collection if you need to find a good euro-game, "ameritrash", etc, they'll likely have it. The owner is enthusiastic and knowledgeable if you need a recommendation or info. My niece loves comic book superheroes, and loves looking at the collection at Wonko's. read more

Wonko's is a great store for buying board games. The staff is friendly and always willing to provide suggestion and guidance. I have been in there several times and would not say I am a regular (because of distance.) The last time I went in they were so helpful in helping me and my daughters (11/13) choose a game we decided to stay and play in their new community gaming room.
