Best Potatoes Au Gratin ever! After a PSG match we aimed for a restaurant in the St Germain area that was busy. With no more planning we dove in here and are thankful we did. We have two 11 year olds and one is a picky eater. Even he ate the escargot multiple times this week. Loved this place. We stayed right across the street and came here every night. We came for drinks 2 nights, and pre dinner snacks, a very reasonably priced charcuterie board with lots of meat and cheeses which were accompanied with bread and other accoutrements. This place is the average or below average French bistro or brasserie. The clients are mostly there to drink, smoke and people watch. Most people were not ordering food. We ordered two beers, a steak and a pasta dish (rigatoni with truffle) The beers were cold and nice (I think they were 1464 Blanche). The steak was flank steak and nicely prepared, but it was quite small and only came with a small side salad (no other side dish) The Rigatoni was also nicely prepared but again a small dish for the price. I think the prices were reasonable though, and our service was ok as well. read more

The food was so-so, but the service was the worst. We asked for a little bread with our meal and ice for our water, and asked. And asked. Meanwhile, our waiter spent all of his time chatting with a table of guests 6 feet away. Every time we made eye contact, he pretended to be reminded of our request. Six years after my first visit and I'm still coming back. And...it's just the same, which is kind of great. Same professional waiters, same great food, nice wines by the glass. I had a stuffed cabbage to die for and followed that with a decadent apple crepe. A place that can maintain consistent, high quality for more than half a decade for me (and for longer than that for others I'm sure) deserves another star. Not many places pull that off. That's one reason why Yelp and other reviewers exists, right, to tell you when a place has slipped? It is not easy to maintain excellence for years; that's remarkable! read more

Quite a spread, and everything was absolutely delicious. Add to that a ton of wine and you've got a long three hour lunch. Fantastic brasserie! I tried the cheese plate, goat cheese tartine with salad and Niçoise salad. The food was excellent but what really sold me was the atmosphere - it's bustling, cheery and noisy. We happened upon this place by accident just walking around the neighborhood looking for a place to eat. Our waiter was very friendly and fluent in English as well as pretty proficient in Russian (we are fluent in both). The food is a French take in tapas with some Italian influences. They also have some standard full size fair. If you are lucky enough to get the waiter we had, his name is Max, you will have a fantastic experience. read more

The salad with chicken that I ordered was okay, but the chicken and potato dish my boyfriend ordered was great! For dessert, the strawberry tart was delicious! I rented an apartment next door to Au Chai de l'Abbaye so with it's convenience decided to stop in and have dinner. The service was average (2 1/2 stars), but the food more than made up for it. I ordered stuffed cabbage and a glass of Bordeaux. Both were delicious! The cabbage was stuffed with a generous portion of meat and flavored perfectly with the right seasonings. And the wine, I don't remember what type of Bordeaux, but it was very good. But then again, (luckily) I never found a wine in Paris that I didn't like. If my in Paris was longer than 2 weeks, I would most definitely have gone back to Au Chai de l'Abbaye to try additional dishes, but with limited time, I wanted to try many other places. read more

We went here following a day at the French Open at Roland Garros. We wanted a quick bite as it was late and this place was close to where we were staying. We got a beer and a glass of wine with salmon and anchovy plate. Both don't sound like much but the waiter was friendly and food was fresh. There were also a lot of French people just hanging out sipping their wine all evening. Since this place is kind of a wine bar, I wouldn't go here expecting a fine dining experience. I've been frequenting Le Chai since the mid-1990s. I particularly like their Poilâne tartines and salads, especially their mixed greens and vinaigrette with Roquefort and walnuts. If the weather is nice, dine on the patio, which I prefer to the interior, where the smoke was intolerable until the 2008 smoking ban. read more

Delicious food and a nice selection of wine. The waiters are professional and provide excellent service. You see a lot of locals here, which is a good sign considering that the neighborhood is fairly touristy. We had a "pot" of wine to share (among two people) which provided us each with two glasses. Hard stale bread, dry charcuterie and dull flavorless salads were tantamount to the patronizing waiter who, when we requested new (not stale) bread, moved around a few of the pieces behind the counter and then and returned with the exact same basket (which was rye, by the way, not baguette). If you want to eat in this area, there are plenty of lovely cafes (The Smiths has excellent quiches although the cafe is small and it is tough to get a seat during a busy lunch hour; the fruit market across the street gives out fresh fruit smoothies; Paul has excellent lunch although not authentic Parisienne). Whatever you do, do not eat at this restaurant. Just about anywhere else in this neighborhood will offer you more delicious food and more friendly service. This choice is not worth your time or your money. read more
