If I had to pick ONE restaurant for dinner in the whole city of Paris, it might be Au Père Louis. Why? The Food: all your favorite French dishes are here and are done well! They even have the hard to find cassoulet daily! French onion soup, fois gras, roasted chicken and fries, steak frites... the list goes on and on... The vibe: Super friendly folks and English is spoken if you're worried about reading the menu. At 7pm, the place feels empty, but by 8pm, you're lucky to find a seat. We quickly found a seat in the bar area, but those stools with backs were a bit uncomfortable. The servers were incredibly friendly. The restaurant has three levels, which I imagine makes it tough for the servers to keep up with everyone as they ran up and down the stairs. I tried the special: Risotto with shrimp. It was the best risotto I've ever had--so light and delicious. The shrimps were large and cooked perfectly. My wife had the razor clams, which were cold and chewy. She also had Xistorra Tranchee, a type of chistorra, which could have used a bit more to make it more than just sausage on a plate, maybe a bed of lettuce would make it better. I visited on a Sunday night around 9pm and they were packed. As a solo business traveler it can be hard to find a restaurant that will seat a party of 1 when they are busy other than at the bar. They seated me at a table without any issues. My French is...terrible. They were accommodating as much as they were able. The regular menu does have English too. They were out of the wine I wanted (petit chablis) but had a large selection and recommended something else that went well with my meal. The escargot was tender, buttery, and tasted of fresh garlic. The French onion soup is everything you hope it will be. Divine! Deep flavors, lots of bread and cheese throughout. The fresh bread went nicely with my escargot. I may have had a slippery shell and dropped by fork, but they were wonderful to bring me a new one promptly. Food was delicious but service was sub par. We were not offered a seating option, were rushed to place our order, received no guidance or suggestions from the waiter. The menu itself was had to read because the lamination was so crinkled. Thankfully, a lovely couple seated nearby gave us some suggestions and translated the specials board for us. Once our dinner arrived, the waiter disappeared outside for either a cell phone or a smoke break and we didn't see him again until he brought the check. We were staying in the area so we tried this quaint restaurant. It was so good, we ate here 3 times, so far, on this trip. The owner is a good guy. Mixed feelings. This place has been a favorite of mine for a few years, but last night the food had become much more careless. A mushy not-quite-hot onion soup, marrow bones that were not fully cooked, a chevre chaud salad with limp greens, a roast chicken that was dry and accompanied by frites that had been sitting for a while, and a creme caramel that wasn't caramelized but which had sugar on top. The menu is straightforward traditional bistro French. There is a surprisingly good selection of wines by the glass, and they are well stored. Similarly a nice choice of Calvados and Armagnac. Prices are correct, not cheap and not expensive. The staff is pleasant and attentive, and they seem to know well least half the people who come in. We came for lunch after arrival from a long flight. The meal was excellent, and we returned repeatedly for end-of-evening brandies. We were always warmly greeted. I read some negative reviews, and in my opinion they are not warranted. This lovely little wine bar is located on a quiet street near Sorbonne University. It has a good wine selection; amble portions of traditional French favorites; gracious wait staff; and a relaxing, comfortable ambiance. We started with the Bone Marrow, which was served in two huge bones, and accompanied by sea salt in a mini Staub cocotte, and wonderful crusty French bread. I had never eaten bone marrow before, and I found it to be very decadent and rich. For main dishes, boyfriend had the cassoulet with duck and pork, delicious comfort food; and I had a spicy sausage with mashed potatoes. So incredibly good! We shared a bottle of Brouilly red wine while we waited for our mains to arrive. The main dishes took quite a while to be served, maybe because of the cassoulet. No matter - we were enjoying a nice bottle of wine seated next to a window with cool evening breezes, overlooking a lovely, quiet street. I'm sure their desserts are amazing, but we were too full to try one. We could not finish nor take with us the cassoulet, which made me sad. A lovely introduction to Paris! We stopped here for dinner on our first night in town. It was just around the corner from our hotel and perfect for an exhausted couple. The space is a collection of cozy rooms on various levels of several interconnected buildings. All I know is, despite being near capacity on a Friday evening, they managed to find us a lovely table next to a window. Burgundy Snails with Garlic Butter - For the love of snails! I love Filipino snails cooked in coconut milk (Ginataang Kuhol/Suso) and those in Vietnamese soup (Bún c) so I really looked forward to trying these escargots. They were big, tender, and had a wonderful texture. Filled with a concoction of garlic, butter, and parsley, this dish lived up to my expectations. Grilled Fresh Scallops and Green Beans - Nicely plated - so simple yet so elegantly looking! The sea scallops were pan-seared to perfection and were served on top of sautéed green beans. Tasted so awesome, but I feel this could have used another scallop or two and more greens. My wife had the Traditional Onion Soup and our daughters picked the Grilled Veal Steak, Blue Cheese, and Gratin Dauphinois and the Pork Sirloin from Aveyron with French Fries. The soup had the right amount of caramelized onions and was generously gratinéed with Gruyère cheese and croutons. The veal was grilled medium as requested and the pork was finely seasoned. The meat portions were smaller than usual though. We were seated on the upstairs area along with a few other customers and had a terrific time. It was cooked to perfect medium and came with gravy. The meat definitely was not a filet but a little on the fatty side but still tasty. Au Père Louis is a bistro and wine bar in the Latin Quarter, near the Luxembourg Gardens. It offers "service continu," which means it is open between lunch and dinner hours, whereas many Parisian restaurants open for lunch, close, and then open again much later for dinner. This worked out in our favor since this was a pretty late lunch for us. There were others dining at the restaurant, but it wasn't crowded so we easily snagged a table for two. My mom ordered the grilled sea bass with vegetables. The fish itself was delicious, perfectly cooked, and well-seasoned, and the melange of veggies beneath is fresh and nicely cooked. I ordered the French onion soup and the escargots bourguignonne (snails with garlic butter, or Burgundy-style snails). I'm just going to put this out there right now. The French onion soup was literally THE BEST French onion soup I've ever had. Hands down, no contest. The broth was so rich and flavorful, and it was filled with thick slices of onions, different from the thinly sliced onions I usually use in my French onion soup. Instead of one or two large croutons on top it had a ton of bite-size crouton cubes. This made for a super crunchy topping which was a lot easier to eat as well. Topped with the traditional crispy, melted Gruyère, it was everything I could have dreamed of in a French onion soup. I loved it so much that I asked our server (who perhaps was also the owner?) how they make it. I took notes, and recreated it once I got home! Scrumptious! Although I was getting pretty full, I had already ordered part two of my meal, the escargots bourguignonne, and was ready to get freaky with some snails. I enjoy escargots very much, and have eaten them both in and outside of France. This is a classic preparation where each cavity is filled with garlic butter. I felt a bit like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman with my escargots tongs. They really are slippery little suckers! We dropped in for an early pre-dinner drink but ended up staying for a few hours cause... this place is just awesome. It was pretty full so we sat at the high top seating area by the bar which was actually really nice since we had a view of the street. Started off with a bottle of red recommended by the super friendly staff and ended up getting some charcuterie & cheese to go along with it. Once that bottle got us going, we started ordering more food (French Onion Soup is a standout) and more wine. After Notre Dame, we decided to walk here and try some escargots! I've put off eating escargot just because I wanted to try it somewhere legit, and where else but France? They start us off with some bread and olive tapenade, and it was absolutely delicious! We had to ask for a second round just because it was that good! We ordered the escargot and steak frites (the two most French things on the menu). The escargot didn't really taste like much, but the buttery pesto sauce it was drenched in was heavenly. So. Much. Yes. From start to finish, this was an absolutely perfect meal. I wasn't that stoked on my meal from the night before, and because this was my only other dinner in Paris there was lots of pressure. Luckily, Au Pere Louis exceeded my expectations and then some. Unsure of the neighborhood's name, but it was littered with tons of crowded restaurants. We wanted something a bit more intimate and off the beaten path, and when Yelp led us down a narrow cobblestone road we knew that we were in for a treat. Once inside, we headed to an even more secluded area and were sat in a cute and cozy little alcove area on the top floor. Although the room was a bit small, there were still plenty of windows and we were able to look out onto the cute little street as we ate our meal while the sun went down. We started off with a bottle of fantastic red wine and freshly baked bread, and then went on to split a burrata as our appetizer. The burrata was perfection. A large and fresh piece of mozzarella smothered in pesto and vinaigrette with fresh tomatoes and arugula. Normally a burrata portion is pretty small, but to my surprise we were served a really nice sized piece of cheese. For my main I wanted one thing and one thing only - a classic and delicious order of steak frites. And luckily, that is exactly what I got. My steak was cooked to medium rare perfection and was served with a hearty portion of crispy fries and a tangy peppercorn sauce. My boyfriend loved his duck and mashed potatoes which came drizzled with a tart and tangy berry sauce. For dessert we ordered creme brûlée (when in Paris) and yet again they knocked it out of the park. Creme brûlée is good anywhere, and for some reason enjoying it in Paris makes it taste even better. I'm sure this is a meal that you can find done right at lots of eateries around Paris, but if you couple the incredible food with great service, a cozy and intimate atmosphere and fair prices then Au Pere Louis quickly becomes an obvious choice. Every time I order this in the states it's very small and hard to share as an appetizer. The bone was as large as my fore arm. The duck steak/filet was one of the best things I ever ate. Upon entering the quaint restaurant in the Latin Quarter we thought the restaurant was quite tiny until we realized that the main floor was just the wine bar. Thankfully, the back of the menu was in English so we had no issues ordering. The restaurant is very homey and not at all pretentious. Light music mingled with laughter from the downstairs bar and pots clanking in the kitchen. The third floor was a bit warm in April so we opened the window next to our table to let in a cool breeze. We started our meal off with a reasonably priced bottle of Cabernet. My husband ordered the Cassoulet (slow cooked pork and white bean casserole), my sister ordered the beef tartar and I ordered the duck and frites. The Cassoulet was amazingly good - I couldn't stop stealing bites! This casual, but delicious dish was so flavorful! My sister's beef tar tar was HUGE. I've never seen such a huge portion of raw beef! She enjoyed her dish, but could only finish about two thirds of her overwhelming meal. My duck resembled steak so clearly that I thought our waitress must have brought me the wrong meal, but it really was duck! Not a tourist trap and we were glad we found this on Yelp. However, given the price, I wasn't pleased with our meal. It was a bit pricey and the foods weren't good enough to keep me coming back. The French onion soup was nearly flavorless to me, it tasted almost like water after a few sips. My boyfriend thought it was the best he's ever had, so maybe I am not fond of French onion soups in general. It had a few slices of bread in it and cheese, which ended up clumping together. My boyfriend had the escargot (12 snails) and he enjoyed it but it's definitely not something he would order again given the price. I couldn't get myself to eat them, haha. I ordered the duck confit and I was happy with my meal, it was delicious! The garlic potatoes were one of the best I've had, round potato slices with garlic... mmm. My duck confit had crispy skin and tons of meat. However, you can only eat so much duck without rice, it was incredibly salty. My meal also came with a small salad. My boyfriend loved his Aue Pere Louis, which is pork with beans. It had a bbq flavor to it. Tons of meat, which he couldn't finish. Asked for 3 duck dishes and emphasized it to be well done, it took him 15 minutes to come back and say they only have 2 duck dishes. Already agitated, we said okay replace it with chicken also emphasized well done. They brought 2 ducks medium, and the chicken cooked on some sides raw on the other sides. When we told the waiter he said we needed to tell him before we touched the food but I didn't know it was raw before I opened it up, and looked. The girl who took our order was super nice, and all this food came out within about 15 minutes. French onion soup was delicious. Bone marrow, cooked perfectly, loved the course salt you sprinkle on it. The deviled eggs were so nice to have, needed egg for breakfast! It was a chilly November night that needed a bottle of wine and a bowl of onion soup before heading back to our apartment. I had looked up Au Père Louis and read very nice things about the food. We got seated in the bar area which was nice. There were a couple of smaller groups of friends drinking and dining together. We decided on a bottle of red as we looked over the menu for food. I knew that I wanted onion soup but I was also intrigued by the sausage with mustard seed mashed potatoes. We decided on grabbing our own soups but splitting the sausage between the two of us. It ended up being the perfect amount of food. The soup came out first. It was hot, covered in a thick layer of cheese on top of crusty bread. The soup was nicely caramelized. It definitely warmed us up from the november chill that settled in us during our afternoon walk. The sausage came out next. A large serving of potatoes topped with a hefty sausage on top. The mustard seeds contributed just the right amount of flavor to the potatoes. I enjoyed every bite that night. The bartender/server treated us nicely, even with our poor attempts at speaking French. The meal was a nice size for price point (about 50-60 euro with a full bottle of wine, 2 soups and an entree). This place gets a solid 4.5 stars out of 5! We had an amazing dinner here and a fantastic dining experience overall-- if you're near the Latin Quarter or Luxembourg Gardens, you should definitely stop here. Our waitress was AMAZING! Being from out of the country, we don't speak much french and she was so kind, helpful and hilarious! She helped recommend great wine for us, and even some cheese for the end of the meal. Between the four of us, we shared onion soup and escargot to start. Both were absolutely delicious, especially since we had never had escargot before- it was a great place to try it! For the main course, the veal steak with au gratin potatoes was delicious, sauce was to die for! Only thing that I would add, which made our review 4.5 and not 5, was that the meat was over cooked. We prefer medium rare in the states, and our waitress let us know that they often undercook in France compared to the US. So, I changed my steak to medium instead of medium rare, but it was in fact a perfect medium to almost well done at home. My advice would be order what you normally would and then ask them to cook it more if it comes underdone. For dessert-- don't pass on the sweets here! We had a crème brûlée and a chocolate cake. This being our third trip to Paris relieved us of the neophyte pressure to experience iconic locations in and around the city. On this night we simply wanted to relax and while away the evening with the locals. Au Pere Louis provided us with just such an experience. Situated on the corner of a quiet intersection within the Latin Quarter, we observed the quotidian foot traffic which occurs at the end of a typical work day. We were seated at a high table with stools where we enjoyed a glass of white wine alongside traditionally prepared escargot, French onion soup, and bone marrow on toast. All of which were served in timely succession so as to punctuate our leisurely conversation. And while our server's appearance was a bit shopworn, what he lacked in attire, he made up for in friendliness and efficiency. The environment was warm and welcoming, and the background music added life to the room without being dominating. Most distinguishing was the replication of Michael Angelo's Creation of Adam adorning the ceiling, no doubt, to distract patrons from the rooms diminutive dimensions. Our evening ended with a cappuccino and a warmed slice of tarte tatin. I feel you can't go wrong eating at most restaurants in Paris. On this recent trip, I had not been to most top-rated restaurants due to schedule conflicts, but I will say Au Pere Louis was the most memorable. A three-story restaurant with staple offerings and a great music selection. A bit understaffed, so be prepared to wait, but servers speak some English and are very friendly. We ordered four starters and an entree to share here: bone marrow, french onion soup, beef tartare, escargot, and veal steak with potatoes au gratin. Everything was spectacular, especially the beef tartare -- the best I have ever had to be honest. And, that's saying a lot as I've eaten quite my fair share. The beef tartare consists of substantial cubes of quality beef, herbs, and a nice cream horseradish. It comes with crispy french fries and and spring mix salad. I recommend coupling the beef with the complimentary baguette slices -- heaven. The bone marrow could use some sort of relish, but still solid with the crostini. French onion soup was solid -- not watery in the least bit, plenty of melted (but not hard) cheese, and lots of flavor. The veal steak was extremely tender. Always order rare+ or medium rare when eating a quality steak -- we ordered medium rare and it was a true medium rare. I would've preferred roasted potatoes over the potatoes au gratin, but YMMV. Prices are standard for Paris, so expect to pay upwards of $100 for a big meal. All worth it in my opinion. I recommend this spot to everyone who is visiting this grand city. read more
