Cruickshank and Roger Tory Peterson, who frequently walked the park's trails in the early-to-mid twentieth century. In 1998 Van Cortlandt Park was designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) in New York State by National Audubon. Approximately 230 different bird species have been recorded in Van Cortlandt Park alone! Nowhere on their website did they state they were closed today. Even so, why were the doors open? I was so upset because I read such good reviews on this place. She did not even seem apologetic at all for this news. I sucked it up, took the L and went home and got a full refund from Groupon. This place seems unprofessional, do not bother!

Clinton Community Garden is a teaching garden and enables all to hone the importance of growing vegetables, plants and bloom flowers. There are benches for resting and lots of green. Very well maintained. Clinton Community Garden is a great example of a unification of a community and building bridges in working toward a common goal of a healthier environment and healthy living.

Important to visit!…read more Easily overlooked when going down 5th Ave. since its entrance is on 79th St., the blue/gold Ribbons of Resilience hung on the iron fence surrounding this Ukrainian Institute of America's 1890s Gilded Age mansion home caught my eye. Below the U.S. and Ukrainian flags out front, the New York City #StandwithUkraine does not fully prepare you for the moving images that await! Entrance to UIA requires only a donation. Within this beautiful landmark building, adjacent to painted Ukrainian Easter Eggs you'll find moving "Fallen Artists of Ukraine: In Memoriam," telling each story to remember them, who they were. In that same hall, a signed flag by the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade named after the Black Zaporizhians Reconnaissance Platoon on October 25, 2023. In the 3rd Floor outstanding "SAINTS" exhibit, (on until March 30th and hopefully extended,) amazing large format photo portraits by Sasha Maslov present other heroes. The shared description of what makes each special adjoin exceptional images, breathtaking down to the pores in their faces. Please pass on this review to call attention to UIA's honor to those individuals and Ukraine's struggle for freedom, defending themselves against Russia's invasion! If possible, make it to UIA to show support! If you can't make it, will be posting pics of all these heroes in my review to check out. Note - UIA has more than these war-related exhibits. Having purchased the building in 1955, it now also has a floor with painted Ukrainian historical portraits, as well as exhibits highlighting Ukrainian artists and William Dzus, a Founder and Benefactor of UIA, who invented self-locking fasteners used in airplane construction. The Ukrainian Institute of America is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the art, music, and literature and the Ukrainian diaspora. It hosts cultural events and is open to the public for visits to see the building and their exhibits. (It's free to visit but they appreciate and suggest donations!) The Institute is housed within a beautiful UES mansion; it's worth a visit alone to see the building! Gorgeous. They also had several interesting exhibits when we were there: "Alexander Archipenko: The Augustin and Maria Sumyk Collection," "Vasyl Diadyniuk: Historical Portraits," "Teura: An Intimate Portrait of Sofia Yablonska," and "The Pysanka: A Symbol of Hope." I really enjoyed our visit. The exhibits were interesting, and I felt like I learned a bit about Ukraine, its history, its culture, and the Ukrainian diaspora even over a short visit. Posting this review after 2 visits in a week and for very different experiences. Had always wanted…read moreto visit and just couldn't pull myself together. The night of my first visit was for an exhibit by the lovely Imani Shanklin who had her #iamshe exhibit here. The exhibit was in one room off to the left of the lobby and was a beautiful curation of images of modern day black women representing different energies. Music played and folks ate appetizers as they circles in and out of the room engaging with each other and the art. At the end of the exhibit there was a live dj and after party. Brooklyn's own Michael K. Williams of the Wire was seen enjoying the evening with his friends. Exactly a week later I returned to tour the Hunterfly Road Houses. As it was shared to me by the tour guide Ivy, the Weeksville is one of America's first free black communities during the 19th century. Within this community, the residents established schools, churches and benevolent associations and were active in the abolitionist movement. Weeksville is a historic settlement of national significance and one of the few remaining historical sites of pre-Civil War African-American communities. I got a chance to tour 3 of the existing houses and examine artifacts such as newspapers, household items and equipment from the 19th century. We learned about the families and their lifestyles. It was such a dope experience. We must do all that is necessary to maintain the integrity of institutions such as this.

Many landscapers and neighbors, know only of the current plantings available that do not support the eco system . They do not know of or realize the wonderful plants that can be added replacing lawns of grass and plants. Port Washington (NY) does indeed take such things seriously. There are many places there where the cycle thrives. Under leadership of the man Raju Rajan (ReWild Long Island) along with some incredible gardeners and participants, listing here but a few here as: Peggy Maslow (NorthShore Audubon Society) Bea Helft (Master Gardener Nassau County Cooperative Extention ) and Mindy Germain, (Port Washington Water District) these processes and location are not only beautiful, but functional. Yesterday there was a very through self guided Sustainable Garden Tour where members in the community displayed their gardens large and small, full or just beginning. Wonderful people with a multitude of knowledge and spirit. The start point was at "Dodge" using your car as a vehicle to travel to different spots to see the beauty around. While driving (Note: many curves, sidestreets and hills and request not to park in front of driveways) along with passing by the water and seeing various birds as ducks, geese and one lone egrit, the eneregies around were comforting as many people on the day were up and about with the beautiful weather. (see pix) it was a wonderful few hours of interaction with people, pets and flowers. I highly reccomend checking them out and getting involved.

If you knew me, I loved the lore and mystique of an old cemetery, especially one that had some history tied to it. I've walked by this place numerous times on my way to downtown Jersey City but never had the urge enough to venture in. Finally, it took a local fundraising music festival to grab my attention. How would this historic cemetery in Jersey City compare to others I've visited!? PURCHASE (N/A): Nothing to spend money on that directly affected the cemetery - 'nuff said. EXPERIENCE On these dreaded humid sunny days, I made my way to the cemetery gates, went inside and gravely read the stones of all these people and those lives as I wondered where they were now. Apparently, it was a volunteer staff that managed and took care of the place. All was good! PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance) Generally speaking, this was an easy flat-to-downhill 20-minute walk from my friend's place. Otherwise, there appeared to be plenty of spots (no known private lot) along the main drag of Newark Ave. and all surrounding roads - 'nuff said. It wasn't very decorative (e.g. fountains, monuments, murals), but at the end of the day it was a place for loved ones to pay their respects to those who have gone before them. It needed a ton of TLC (hence, the goats, which will be covered in my next review), and more historical marketing. And, I always loved supporting small businesses whenever possible. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience between the two visits was around $0.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). The femetary employs goats in the summer, so we got to see them today, and sheep, ...and a groundhog, and butterflies! Cardinals here too lol. Tombs dates back to early 1700. The other one nearby at old bergen, is 1600s.
