We were taken here by a friend for drinks and a bite to eat on our arrival night in Munich. It was a hot day, so the place was packed, and the benches are so close together that we rubbed butts with the guests sitting behind us (some of whom were less gracious about the experience than others). The beer is good, and the pretzels big, fresh and tasty, but this is expected in a place like this in a town like Munich. The obazder (sic), a cheesy dip that goes well with the pretzels, was very tasty though. I'd give a higher mark were it not for the discomfort of the seating arrangements, so on a less busy night you might find it more pleasant. read more

A large group of us came here for a night out and it was the best biergarten in Munich that we visited! It's huge, accommodates several hundred people and on a nice mild night, it's a real fun place to hang out and put back a few liters. Our waitress was great, having no problem hauling 8 liters of beer, and her English was good enough to understand our drunken mumbling. We are partial to this beer garden because a) the beer is superior, and b) it is less touristy than most. In fact, everyone around us was a regular, many donned in lederhosen. The regulars have reserved tables, and you really get a sense of how much beer garden life is part of Munich's culture. Service was shockingly fast and attentive for such a massive place, but be prepared with your order when your waiter/waitress arrives - they don't have time for dilly-dallying. Then sit back and watch in awe as the wait staff scurries to and fro carrying 5 or 6 liter steins of beer in each hand without spilling a drop. The traditional Bavarian fare - we had a giant pretzel, wurst sampler, sauerkraut, red cabbage, potato salad, schnitzel and apple strudel - was all tasty, if not the very best we've had in Germany. Certainly better than I expected from a 5000-seat beer garden. All and all, a delightful experience. read more

Probably one of my favorite dining experiences in Germany. Food was excellent and great service. We went to the restaurant indoors, which was packed with locals. We started off with the Bavarian-style Obazder, which is basically a cream cheese dip with onions, served with rye bread and pretzels. Yum! I tried the Pfefferschnitzel which was delicious! It is a pork cutlet in pepper sauce with a side of spaetzle. The sauce had the right amount of kick too it and was not overly spicy. Service was good and we just had a good time in general. Definitely going back here if I ever go back to Munich! read more

If you are in search of perfectly prepared Bavarian-style food in a beer garden with top-notch German ambiance, then this is the place for you!! I personally am not into the cured meats, sausages and delicacy "parts" of the pig, however, this is what Augustiner Beer Hause is all about. My husband ordered the suckling pig with beer gravy, and it was the best he had ever had. Our friend ordered the Speck, and it was delicious. The food options are for the carnivore-loving beer drinkers. Our only disappointment, a disappointment for Germany as a whole, is the quality of service. The is no incentive to go above and beyond since the wait staff is paid well--they do not depend in tips for a living. My experience was beyond amazing. I have been to many places while in Munich and hands down the best place I have been too. From the moment you walk in the gate you leave behind the city and enjoy a rather calm outdoor patio or go inside to the beer hall. Don't assume the area has a small inside. Immediately someone sat us, which was very different than most places we have been too. Our server brought English menus and took our orders. The food looks expensive but trust me they are worth every euro! I had the Grilled Salmon Steak, two beers, and dessert. All of this came out to be $26 euros. Food time is quick but they are super busy so be aware and ask ahead of time for everything you want. read more

this was a really cool beer hall. we came here on the opening day of oktoberfest, b/c it was impossible to get into the tents. well, we could have, but i am seriously too old to wait in lines at this point. there is a dining hall upstairs on the ground floor, as well as a gigantic beer garden. it was already dark when we came here, and it was a bit chilly, so we opted for the indoors. my friend had come here before and knew that we could take a secret elevator to get to the bottom tavern area. it was really quiet w/ long communal tables. the menu is more limited than upstairs, but it felt a lot more private. they have soft pretzels on each table, of which we gobbled. beer here is very good, as it is all over germany, and the food was your standard pub fare. read more

This was our second stop after the other popular beer hall that starts with "Hauf...". Here we were guided to our table when we decided to eat inside instead in beer garden. Place was less crowded than we expected. Menu selection included similar dishes as in other German establishments...local beer selection and recommended brews from their own stash. You won't leave the place hungry and thirsty. Finding the place was bit tricky as it's placed inside beer garden but just look for restaurant name signs and walk thru the double gate pass all the tables outside. read more

Up and down the streets near Marianplatz, you can find great beer houses with outdoor seating on the street and have some very fine beer and people watch while eating. But after a few days, on a late Friday afternoon, I wanted to get away to an "off the street" place and enjoy the company of other diners and drink some good beer. This restaurant is located on the north side of the train station and slightly west. I chose the outside seating which was off the road and nestled in a wooded area on the front grounds. Had a mass of Augustiner beer (actually had a few) and a Schnitzel platter and was very content. Talked to some of the folks around me, traded stories and had a great time. As another reviewer noted, the Kellnerin (waitress) let me practice my rusty German and was able to piece the words together. Would definitely go back the next time I'm in Munich. read more

It was a balance of great and could-be-better. The beer was a highlight, while the pretzels were very underwhelming. Service was friendly enough, but also confusing (funny-but-snarky waiter, German and English menus had completely different items). This place has a self serve (think Hofbrau) and a service area. The food here is ridiculously good (their pork knuckle is supremo and their pig belly is delightful). Augustiner has some of the most incredible beer in Munich - mouth watering and you can def get lost on how many you drank bc the place is friendly - you really do not wan to leave. The opening weekend of Oktoberfest is insane- you can hardly move in the crowds, and if you don't have a reservation, it's impossible to find a place in the beer tents, the only place to order a drink in the festival. We decided to ditch the crowds, and found this beer hall instead to have dinner and drinks- very traditional, with huge long tables of mixed social groups, which was fun. We ordered a sampler appetizer platter- the English of the waitress wasn't very good, but we got the idea it was some sort of meat and head cheese platter- it was actually pretty good, and my husband still talks about this mystery plate to this day! Our entrees included duck and roast, with sides of red cabbage and potatoes. The food is almost just a side note to the beer and atmosphere here really! The atmosphere was loud and rowdy- just as a beer hall should be! Note: they only sell liter beers here, not half liters like most places, so be ready to drink! There was a stage at the front of the hall where I think they usually have a polka band, but I believe we left a little early before the festivities got under way. All in all, it was a good time and the Augustiner beer is excellent! We always look for it when we go to a liquor store that has a wide selection of international beers. read more
