Wait times here are TERRIBLE. I have been going here for over a year, I never get the same person doing my exams and I have only seen Dr. Auker once despite several requests to be scheduled with him. I just went this week and they CHARGED me $8 to write me an eyeglass prescription!!!??? What kind of healthcare business is this? Writing the prescription is the doctor's professional duty after doing a routine exam and eye dilation. They were unable to write the prescription due to printer issue so I left empty-handed after paying them the $8. They promised to email it by the end of the day and I am still waiting for my prescription to get new glasses. I just called them and left a message requesting a refund on my credit card and a callback to schedule me with Dr. Auker. This last appointment was supposed to be with him but that didn't happen. My appointment was at 2 PM. I was called back at 2:10. After getting set up by a very pleasant and helpful assistant, I saw Dr. Kim, who was very friendly, amenable to my plethora of questions, and was not at all rushed. I then had a question about fixing my eyelids, which droop down and rest on my lashes, and she had Dr. Auker come in and speak to me about that. He spent 20 minutes explaing different options, but only recommended the simplest one. I was there a total of 55 minutes. Great comfortable experience. read more

I was referred to Dr. Todd Auker by my optometrist who I have gone to for many years. My doctor told me I should get my cataracts checked and he highly recommended Dr. Auker. I was able to get in for my appointment reasonably quick and was given a very involved examination which took pretty close to two hours from start to finish, which I was told when I made the appointment the visit would be roughly two hours. Of course quite a bit of the time was because my eyes were dilated so the very thorough examination could take place. Several tests and measurements were taken. Dr. Auker came in and examined my eyes and explained what would transpire if I chose to have the surgery. He made sure to answer any and all questions I had in a way that I could understand. Of course I was very nervous as any surgery has risks, but Dr. Auker assured me I would not have any pain and he explained cataract surgery is very common. Once I made the decision to have the surgery, an pre-op appointment was scheduled and during that appointment more measurements of my eyes were taken. I noticed a few people whining about having to wait. First of all, I would rather have a doctor be very careful and thorough when they are examining me. Dr. Auker cares about his patients and it shows in how he answers any and all questions and takes the time to make you feel you are in good hands. Fast forward to surgery day. The surgical center did take longer than expected, but that had nothing to do with Dr. Auker. Dr. Auker came in and talked with me before surgery to make sure there were no issues or concerns. He let me know I was next up and soon thereafter I was wheeled into the operating room. I was prepped for surgery and before I knew it, (10 minutes later) my surgery was done and I was wheeled back to get dressed and on my way home. Dr. Auker saw me the next day and assured me everything was good, which was very comforting and my next appointment was in 2 weeks. I really like how the doctor gives immediate answers to any questions you may have. His office staff is very friendly and helpful and accommodating even though they are super busy. I would have given 10 stars to Dr. However, there is one person in his staff who is very rude. She spoke so harshly with my 9 yr old, my mom and me. He was takes the time to explained and makes sure that his patients understand his process . You may have to wait because of this . But worth the extra care and attention . It's hard for me to rate the Auker Eye Institute. Dr. Auker himself is an excellent eye doctor and has a great reputation as a surgeon. If I needed surgical care in the Bay Area, he'd be the first I'd call on. I have been counting on Todd for my eye care for over 20 years. However, his present office is a train wreck. Appointments are habitually late and drawn out. A typical annual visit takes 4 or more hours for what should be a one-hour visit. Getting your prescriptions in writing from them seems to be especially difficult, and they play all kinds of games when ordering contact lens to force you to come back and get all whole new eye exam (and another four plus hours) to get additional boxes. It's nearly impossible to deal with them over the phone. The staff is sarcastic and unappreciative of the patient's time or comfort. It can take up to five phone calls just to get them to order your lenses. With a significant chance that you'll receive the wrong lens a couple weeks later (I have received the wrong lenses twice and they're a fairly off-the-shelf prescription.) Forget trying to speak to Todd directly outside the exam room. His staff shields him from patients otherwise. When they are confronted, they say it's Todd's policy. If I only had to deal with Dr. Auker, I would give them five stars. Unfortunately, for routine eye care, there are many better choices in all directions. I had stuck it over the last few years, hoping for improvement, but if anything, the office around Dr. Auker has become worse. It makes me sad that I'm changing eye physicians after all this time, but I can't recommend Auker Eye for anything but surgical needs and even then I'd have to think twice about the after-care I would receive. read more

I have just completed cataract surgery in both eyes with Dr. Auker and his office and hospital teams. I couldn't be more pleased with the results. My vision is so clear. I can see the definition in leaves on trees and plants, so cool. Let me start from the beginning, my first office visit I walked in and his office was filled to the brim with patients. I started to talk patients in different stages of their procedures. I quickly learned I was in the right place, the wait might be long but this team is the one I want taking care of my vision. His patients that had their procedures and enlightening me on their success made the wait worth it. I was selecting a Doctor to restore my vision. Absolutely disappointed and frustrated by incredible luck of customer service and follow up management. I made an appointment with dr. Auker and without any notification or preparation had a visit with another person. Dr.Auker wasn't there and it wasn't his day at all . No one mention it that the other doctor doesn't work that day .I played along with this and had a good conversation with different doctor. Nothing to complain about the other doctor,but it wasn't Auker . Second of all , since I made an appointment, I didn't receive any email confirmation, information or etc follow up appointment . The office girl is very sweet but absolutely unprofessional and doesn't send any information, it takes a fortune to ask for documents, emails, prescriptions (called twice from pharmacy to get them) . The office management is below any level that potentially can ruin any visit . My mom left without meds for the weekend and I've never had post visit emails that been requested few times . Dr Aucker is very thorough and an excellent doctor. I almost lost my sight due to high eye pressure. He fit me in on the Friday before Christmas. I came in for a sty in my eye and he took my eye pressure! It was so high I could have literally went blind. Dr Auker and his staff checked my pressure first and figured out what the problem was and treated my eye for both things. I have been coming to him for years and he is absolutely the best not only in the tri-valley but in the USA! I was told the appointment would take two hours, but I waited nearly an hour to be seen. I was seen by a tech, who did all the exams. She dilated my pupils, and I was sent back to the waiting room. I was called back, and she finished up the rest of my exam. Then I waited again for almost another hour. I had plenty of time to observe and hear the rather unpleasant office staff. They were unfriendly, and nearly yelled at patients when they didn't have their masks on properly. I finally got called back to see Dr. Auker. I know the man is an excellent surgeon and esteemed, but I got to sit outside the exam room and listen to him talk to a drug rep about GoodRx for about 10 minutes. When he did come in, he looked at the pictures the tech did, came up with a diagnosis from those, and just took a brief, cursory look into my eyes. While I appreciate the personal perspective about a professional's similar situation, I felt like I heard more about his eye health than what I could tell him about mine. I was told I have healthy eyes and cataracts, that I can wear contacts, and because of my nearsightedness, there are risks for retinal tears during eye procedures. I'm still not sure how to interpret that. But I did not feel like my concern about my deteriorating vision was addressed. I did get a prescription for glasses, for another $65, and will see what this is like. When I checked out, I felt like I was treated like an elderly idiot (I'm 59!) by the office staff when she had to explain again the charge, and also in trying to make an appointment for me to see the optometrist for contact lens fitting. This was probably the worst experience i have ever had in a doctor's office. I usually go somewhere else, and see an optometrist yearly, but on the advice of a friend, I sought out what I thought was an excellent opthalmologist. I originally gave him a 5 Star rating. Recently, he and his office has changed for the worse. When I had cataracts and needed new lenses in both eyes, Todd's options were to have Both eyes with long distance and wear glasses for anything near or have one long distance and one near distance and need glasses only for very near reading small print. Todd told me if I chose one long distance and one near distance my brain would have trouble coordinating both eyes because that is what happened to him. He couldn't properly explain in simple easy to understand language how each option worked, got frustrated and left the room in huff telling to make up my mind. After I thought about it, there was a simple easy to understand answer. I wore glasses with a different prescription for each eye and was able to see normally and my brain was able to coordinate the two different prescriptions into a single vision. That is no different than having a long distance lens in one eye and a near vision lens in the other eye. Our brains are very capable. Todd wasn't able to to explain it in these simple terms - because "Todd" had difficulty this was a foreign idea to him. Since the surgery, I see very well with different lenses in each eye. I made the right choice, through no help by Todd. Last year Todd was still running late. He was more abrupt, hurried/harried and stressed than before. This week I called ahead of my appointment and was told he was running 15 minutes late. I came in 15 minutes late. I had to wait another 35 minutes before my name was called for the assistants to do their work up for him. When I finally saw Todd, I told him I came in 15 minutes late to be on his schedule, but still had to wait another 35 minutes until my name was called. He said he knew I was only 2 minutes away. Then he went into a rant and rage and berating me for telling him I had to wait. Rather than start examining me he continued to rant, rage and berate me. He said If I didn't like it I could leave and go to another ophthalmologist. I sat there listening to him. Then he said he had other patients to see. I said I am the patient you are seeing now and I want you to start my examination. He grudgingly started, saying he does the best he can and he is doing the best he can for me. During the examination he continued to rant, rave, and belittle. At one point he told me I should have had him perform a procedure, 5 years ago, rather than going to another Dr. He was still angry I didn't use him. He hurried through the exam, said everything looked okay, then left the room. I asked the front desk if Todd wanted to see me for another appointment. They didn't l know and had to find him. He said yes, in a year. Todd is much older than when he started in Pleasanton. He now is arrogant, thinks he is God's gift to you, yet, he doesn't care if he has you as a patient or not and treats you as if he doesn't want you as a patient if you say anything about his keeping patients waiting for one or more hours - I guess because he hears that all the time and does nothing to correct this and be on time. I think he expected me to leave his office when he went into a rant and rage and berating me for telling I had to wait. No one should have to put up with, while in the office with Todd, having him rant and rage and berate you for telling him how long you had to wait. And tell you could walk out and find another ophthalmologist before examining you. In Todd's frame of mind, I would not recommend anyone going to him and I recommend to Todd that he retire since age and whatever else has affected his brain. read more

Dr. Auker removed a cataract in my left eye and replaced it with a toric lens for my stigmatism. For the first time in over 50 years I do not need glasses or contacts for that eye. My vision is 20/15. Unbelievable! I would definitely recommend Dr. Auker. read more

No more glasses after 30 years for both distance and reading. Removed cataracts and installed a multifocal lens with great results. Everything he said in terms of expected results happened. Surgery was pain free and efficient. Hacienda Surgery Center did a great job as well. Downside is longer wait times in a busy office, but part of the reason is that Dr. Auker spends the time to make sure all questions are answered. read more

Dr Aukar is amazing . He did a minor eye procedure on my eye in 2010 (I lived in LA but came to Pleasanton to see him because I was referred to him by multiple people) I have to get another eye procedure done on my eye and I refuse to go to another ophthalmologist. Each time I see him I have to wait two hours because the office is always busy with patients. Today I waited about two hours to see him but I wouldn't trust anyone with my eyes but Dr Aukar. I'll happily wait for an experienced doctor for 2-3 hours. It's my eye sight / vision / eyes. I rather go to a quality doctor with experience that has a long wait because he has a ton of patients waiting. Dr Aukar has 20 years of experience as a board certified ophthalmologist. I was also considering getting Botox since he does Botox however that's a different visit. He deserves 5 plus stars. Amazing person who sincerely cares about all his patients. He safely and successfully did a procedure on my eye again. The whole staff is extremely kind and sweet as well. Only thing I can say is expect a wait because Dr Aukar is extremely busy seeing patients because his a great surgeon / doctor ! Worth the wait ! read more

Stay away if you value your time! I had an 11:30 app't, knew it would take 2 hours, and planned accordingly. We were leaving the Bay area at 2 pm for a wkend away, so I had to be out of there by 1:30. I told the receptionist this when I checked in. The waiting room was full and I asked how long behind he was running. She said I'd get started in 10 minutes. They took me @ 12pm, effectively ruining my plans for the day. How can you plan your daily appt's if they don't respect appointment times? Dr. Auker reviewed my file, which contained several previous surgeries ( RK, lasik), and began telling me totally irrelevant stories about loading guns and the patient he just saw, etc. I was getting furious as I had to be out of there, and he's telling me stories!! When telling me about my eyes, he was arrogant and condescending. He wouldn't answer my questions completely, just enough to show he was right. Since I was unhappy with previous eye surgery, he was worried that I would be unhappy and "bad mouth" him. He was more worried about his reputation than his patient! Then he told me he wouldn't operate on me, and I was in tears. Instead of showing some empathy, he started in on another story! Then he was offended when he told me to wear contacts, and I said I didn't want to do that at my age. He's wearing them, and is almost as old as me, so what's my problem? Great bedside manner! Finally, @2pm he looked at me, said "Well, YOU wanted to be out of here by 1:30, didn't you? Nice meeting you." and walked out. Im Giving Dr. Nguyen a 5 star rating, shes great and explains alot ! my two star is for the my moms tech. as the tech takes us in the room to do some testing, first and formost, I work in this industry but i did not metion anything i wanted to see what she was doing, before i step in and finally told her where i worked. she was friendly at first but it changed... Red Flags that im going to point out that really made me mad. 1. she FAKE sanitized the equpiment 2. she was Really rough with my mom, i get that my mom doesnt understand english but im in the room with her trying to help her out but she was still being very mean with my mom. 3.she was hurting my mom, my mom had suffer a brain aneurysm and she lost 95% vision in her left eye so when she was trying to do test on her left eye and she was trying so hard to open it she kept trying to yell at her to open wider and finally she forced my moms eye open . Love Dr. Auker I had a consistent issue with my eyes getting dry and becoming very red & irritated. I had a exam and they tested my tear producyion..turn out extremely low. He suggested a great eye drop product & tear duct plugs which alow my eyes to water more. I have had them 2 weeks n love them...no more red eyes. Thank you to Dr Auker & his wonderful staff! Parking is easy n plenty, office is very clean and they take ur temp & have plenty hand sanitizer. read more

My name is Marisa Fidone, I am 18 years old and I was 15 years old when I got cataract eye lens replacement surgery. I visited countless surgeons, and Dr. Auker was my best choice. He knows what he is doing, he makes me feel comfortable and he has been my ophthalmologist for countless years. Usually, it is rare for a 15-year-old to get cataracts, however, he still managed to figure out the appropriate implant and managed the surgery very well. I am so thankful for Dr. Auker and his staff. I mean this so genuinely, he changed my life. I went from legally blind to seeing 20/20 on the day of surgery. I had an injury to my eye from a poorly thrown frisbee. Dumb, I know. But my eye is swollen and blurry. I want to make sure all is well. Sat there waiting for Dr. Theresa after 90 mins.... This place sucks. They said she had to come in late today. Thanks for the heads up... Ugh. *** Updated before posted... Dr. Theresa just said that I am going to have to wear glasses now?!? We waited for over 2 hours at one point for a 10 minute result delivery. It's something that could've been done over the phone. On top of waiting, he scolded his assistant while she tried to explain something. It was not needed and could've been done in private. That was our last visit despite the fact that we're supposed to schedule another appointment. We found another ophthalmologist that spent more time with us, explained to us what was really going on and didn't let us wait. I have been going to opthalmologists since 3rd grade. My teachers thought I was an idiot but it turns out when I got glasses there was an A-student lurking inside me. PARENTS!! Test your child's vision before they end up on the short bus! The VERY best place in the East Bay to have this particular part of your head examined is Todd Auker's shop on Santa Rita. His staff is knowledgeable and super friendly, always willing to work with you to squeeze you in around surgeries. I have been going to see Auker since moving to Pleasanton many years ago, and I have never met a surgeon like Todd Auker. He really has passion for the medicine, and it shows in both the results and his style of patient interaction. Ask yourself this question: when is the last time YOUR doctor called you at home at night to discuss IDEAS that they have for improving your (insert problem here) ?? At his suggestion I came back in for a few more "better/worse" minutes in the chair and his analysis and idea paid off, with my reading and work-related vision distance improved dramatically over the previous set of lenses. This guy is good. And I never write reviews about anything. Don't take chances by going to someone with more open appointment times. Get in line and wait for the best. Pretty darn happy with this place! I was nervous after seeing the reviews online about the extended wait times and two hour appointments, so when I called I asked if they had improved on that situation. The receptionist said they definitely had, and set me up with a 9am appointment the following week. They sent me paperwork to complete in advance so the wait in the lobby would be reduced. Upon checking in, I think I waited about 5 minutes to see the eye technician. She checked me in, was very pleasant and welcoming, took time to connect on a personal level, and was very knowledgable about the upcoming procedure. I then went back to the lobby for a few minutes while they prepared the room. I found Dr. Auker very personal, professional, skilled, and concise. He was able to resolve a situation that two other doctor's failed at. He gave me a detailed treatment plan and provided me with additional information about my condition that helped me have clarity as to what was going on. The only thing I would improve upon is updating and a deep clean of the waiting area. It's definitely worn and could use a little TLC. Overall, I highly recommend this doctor and his office. read more

This place is horrible. Took 2 hours for a routine eye exam. A doctor and nurse came into my exam room as I was waiting logged on to the computer and started discussing another patient's treatment. I had to pay $60 for them to write out my glasses prescription. And now a month later I am getting another bill in the mail. Do not recommend at all! read more

All of the staff at the office are extremely friendly and have come off competent. My review would end up being 5 out of 5 stars for the eye services that have been provided but there's one huge exception that absolutely ruins the experience; there is no urgency to get patients in and out of the office. Expect to wait at least an hour to an hour and a half to see the doctor. You may want to bring a book....or a 1000 piece puzzle. Just a tip! :) read more

This review only gets 3 stars because Dr Auker did not use contacts to see if I was a candidate for mono vision. He did both cataracts and promoted the mono vision because you don't usually need to use glasses. Had he told me of some of the issues that can occur, I would never have chosen it. I have had nothing but problems since having mono vision. The eye for close up does not adjust to allow the other eye to take over for distance and I always have blurry vision in that eye and I ended up having to get glasses to correct the distance on the close up eye. Then I got a 4th nerve palsy that caused double vision and after 6 months, it was healing and the double vision got much better. Then in Jan I got double vision again. After seeing a ophthalmologist and a nuero ophthalmologist they both said mono vision is not for everyone and can cause problems including double vision. In my case, my brother had amblyophia and that was reported on my patient info I filled out, and I even asked Dr Auker if they had ever come up with a cure for it, so the fact I had a sibling with a lazy eye issue should have been a concern for giving a patient mono vision. My point here is, never get mono vision without trying it with contacts first. read more
