I recently attended one of the free spay and neuter clinics hosted by Austin Animal Free Spay and Neuter Clinic and greater good charities for my puppy, and overall, I had a great experience with just a few things to keep in mind if you're planning to attend. The clinic was scheduled from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM. I arrived around 8:30, and as expected for a free event, the lines were long--but honestly, that's understandable when such valuable services are offered at no cost. One of the great things was that there was no limit to the number of animals you could bring. Once I got there, I was greeted by friendly staff who gave me paperwork to complete. A staff member kindly informed me that the process could take a while, which I appreciated. I ended up waiting in line for about four hours. If I had known ahead of time, I definitely would have brought snacks and water to help pass the time--but I was fine overall. Before they took my puppy back, they thoroughly explained the procedure and all the services included: the spay/neuter surgery, vaccines, microchipping, and preventative medications. Talk about saving money! They promised to take great care of him, and I felt reassured as they carried him back. Around 4:30 PM, I received a call to pick him up. He looked good at first, but as I drove down the highway, I noticed some bleeding. I turned around and rushed back to the clinic. The staff explained that male dogs can be a little more sensitive due to the number of blood vessels involved, and it wasn't unusual. They immediately took him back, cleaned him up, and made sure he was okay. One of the amazing volunteers even helped me clean the blood off my car and blankets--who knew peroxide worked so well? Once home, I noticed his microchip had started to migrate out. I texted the number they provided, and they told me to bring him back in for a check-up. I did just that two days later, and he was given a clean bill of health. They were quick, responsive, and made sure everything was taken care of. They also mentioned that they host these events frequently. If you're considering getting your pets spayed or neutered, I absolutely recommend bringing them here. The wait can be long, but the care and services are worth it. They treat your fur babies with love and compassion, and you leave knowing your pet got the attention they needed. They do horrible things to their animals. They throw animals with illnesses on you and REFUSE to help you out or give your new baby medicine in the meantime while waiting for their first vet appointment. My baby had worms that they just "didn't notice" from March... it's MAY and they REFUSE to give him $20 dewormer. They're stingy and horrible people that don't care for the health of their animals. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SHELTER FOR ADOPTING, THEY WILL NOT HELP YOU CURE THINGS THEY GOT IN THE SHELTER. THEIR 311 NUMBER KNOWS NOTHING. IDIOTS. I had an okay experience, but wish it was better. Some of the workers were nice, but some had an attitude problem especially the Hispanic chick with glasses. She looks like she hates her job since they got her working everyday. She deterred us from getting a few dogs that we liked. I don't know what her issue was. I only seen her treat us differently, but everyone else she was encouraging them to get dogs. I've owned dogs most of my life, but she assumes POC never had dogs before. Sounds like a prejudice racist. Then on top of that, most of the dogs were pit bulls. I asked about small dogs and only seen puppies. Small dogs meaning small breeds. We adopted a dog, but she wasn't the right fit. When we tried to return her within 30 days, we weren't treated kindly. The staff was incredibly rude to my boyfriend and had him wait in the frigid cold for 20 minutes. The dog was the worse dog I've ever had, so I don't believe they train their dogs. I was told the dog had a green dot meaning no behavior issues, but that wasn't true. The dog was extremely destructive and did not listen at all. Why is it that returning a dog within 30 days of their policy, but we were treated rude?! Wtf. We didn't have a positive experience. read more

The Austin Animal Center (AAC) is super organized and has so many different options to choose from. When we arrived to the center, we had no idea where to even begin. Luckily, the employee that helped us was super helpful and cheerful. She explained how AAC's pet viewing system works, and even provided a useful (& accurate) map for us. You'll find dogs and cats of all sizes and occasionally, a chicken if you please. The kennels are kept pretty clean here compared to other shelters I have been to. Unfortunately, I can't speak for the adoption process itself, as we never found exactly what we were looking for. If you ever have any donations, such as gently used toys, comforters, dog supplies, etc, you can drop these off in the front. read more

I am utterly disgusted with the policies here! I was told when I called and found a husky on the street that 1. The city will not come and pick him up, you can put in a request but that could take up to 5 business days to come get a dog on the streets, 2. You cannot drop a dog you found on the streets off it after 4 pm. We do not care that you cannot take the dog in. It is your duty to call friends and family to take in a stray dog. It does not matter that you cannot physically hold onto the dog until 10 am when they open the next day. Your only option that we can offer is you hold onto the dog and wait or it is up to you to abandon the dog back on the streets. 3. It is your fault that you took in the dog, if you couldn't hold onto the dog overnight then it is your fault and we will report your license plate to APD if you put the dog back on the streets and gets hit by a car because it is your fault that you decided to try to take a dog off the streets. 4. If you do decide to let the dog loose back on the streets just don't get caught because they will come after you with a misdemeanor because you didn't accommodate a random dog off the streets. I am disgusted that I was turned away and the people at the location truly did not care. Three of them gave me dirty looks when I tried to drop off a dog. "That's not what I said sir" well you will not accept the dog, I cannot take the dog home, I cannot hold onto the dog at my office, I do not have friends or family that would take in a random dog so it is your fault for giving a crap about an animal. I learned that it is my fault for caring about a dog and worrying that it might get hit. The city will not come out to get the dog and they will refuse to accept a dog off the streets instantly. They do not care! If you cannot take a dog in overnight then DO NOT EVER try to stop a dog from getting hit by cars because if you CANNOT drop everything and care for a complete stray then we will come after you even though we are the ones that refused to even accept the dog in the first place. I really will truly NEVER PICK A DOG UP OFF THE STREETS AGAIN IN AUSTIN! Thank you so much for teaching me that caring about others is wrong and you will get punished and be told well it's your fault for picking up a dog off the streets to prevent it from getting hit. Utterly disgusting policy... it's funny Austin is a no kill shelter but another way to kill dogs is to refuse to accept them and then punish anyone that tries to get them off the streets. My experience with the Austin Animal Center was very bad and hurtful that I was crying but the manager could care less. She showed no compassion whatsoever. I applied to get a small dog at Austin Animal Center so they notified me about a puppy that I could have so I went to look at him and fell in love with him. They told me to pick him up 3 days later. I returned to get him and was told that I could NOT have him. Why? They assumed that I would not follow up with his appointments at the vet just because I forgot my phone that day. Is this such a terrible crime? This is so CRUEL & WRONG. Another animal agency supervisor informed me that Austin Animal Center was wrong for doing what they did and said that the Austin Animal Center has no right to make that kind of "judgment call" about me. I registered a complaint about Austin Animal Center but it did no good since the person I talked to was employed with the Austin Animal Center so they still do not see that what they did was WRONG and they NEVER apologized for their wrong doing against me. She suggested that I should get an older dog but I prefer a puppy so I can teach it good habits that I want a dog to have in the future. I thought they were in the business for finding good homes for pets and I have always been a GOOD owner to all of my pets (dogs & cats alike) so I would NEVER donate to ASPCA because they are not in business for the benefit of these poor homeless pets like they say they are. I am still VERY UPSET over this situation. The pruneface manager that backed up her employee looked like she was into "witchcraft" so I don't understand why they would put her into a management position. She was terrible. They didn't even offer to reimburse me for my Uber fee to get to the Animal Center. It was an expense that I had to pay to go to get nothing. I started to volunteer here last month. The city finally had started to let volunteers come back and to be "hired" since the pandemic. Everyone is required currently to wear masks while in the building. The volunteer program so far has been informative and I think the staff and volunteers care for animals. As a nonvolunteer, anyone over the age of 18 can walk a green dot dog. There are colors assigned to each dog to denote behaviors the dog exhibits. The shelter has dogs and cats. Sometimes they also have bunnies, guinea pigs, and reptiles. I would definitely recommend coming here if you are looking for a pet, need to rehome your pet, or are financially struggling to keep your pet. read more

I have gotten a cat and a dog from this location during the summer when they waive adoption fees because they become over loaded with pets. I love both my animals and they made sure we were well informed of any issues they might have. I recommend adopting from here! I frequented this shelter a number of times before I met and brought home my cat last month. She was 3 months old, so we brought her home as a foster with intent to adopt. When we brought her back for a spay (free!) it went extremely well. The incision site was super clean and the surgery was clearly preformed meticulously and prudently! She healed in no time! Reached out to the vet team a few times and they were so helpful. Now that I've gotten to know my kitty, I realize how relaxed and happy she was here when we met her. Honestly, I met with a few cats and every one I met with (even the apparently skittish or misbehaving cats) seemed relaxed and content with the staff and the environment, and all warmed up in a few minutes. It takes skill to create an environment where every cat seems generally happy, even at capacity. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Everything is kept clean and organized. There are always several volunteers floating around ready to answer questions, on week days and weekends alike. Process went very smoothly and everyone was incredibly friendly throughout the entire process. I found the PERFECT pet here! Something to add- I wasn't supposed to meet with my kitten when I did, she was too young to be handled as her immune system is still developing. This was explained nicely to me by a senior volunteer. I felt like I had really caused trouble and I was worried I had upset the staff but she was incredibly reassuring and provided information to make me feel at ease. No one likes feeling scolded, and this volunteer did an incredible job setting a clear boundary out of concern for the animal while acknowledging my remorse and consoling me. This is exactly the kind of person you want taking care of cats, truly. Patiently firm and naturally kind, who clearly cares about the health and safety of the animals there. My family tried to adopt a dog today. we had two meetings with the dog in question. The first meeting we fell in love with the dog and made arrangements for a meet-n-greet with our current dog, since we were told we could not bring him to the intitial meeting. That was a scheduled appointment in their computer system. We came back with our dog and jumped through more of their hoops to make sure everyone would be happy in our home. It went great! We loved the dog the dog loved us and the two dogs got along wonderfully. We decided to complete the adoption, pay the fee, and make the arrangements to all go home together. We were left to sit for another thirty minutes and when our name was called, we were met with suprise when we named the dog we had just walked away from. She was already adopted! She had been adopted the day we first met her. No one said a word until hearts were set up to be broken. I adopted a cat here a couple weeks ago. While I love him, I have some other thoughts on the staff here. Went here first on a Friday evening. Around 5. One sign in the center said until 6 pm another said 7 pm. I figured maybe they don't let anyone in after 6, then shut down at 7. Nope that was not the case. They were rushing us out by 5:45 pm. They care more about not staying one minute past 6 than getting these animals adopted. Had to come back the next day to adopt or even do anything. They make it out as if they're so desperate to get these animals a home, but most of the staff acts annoyed by anyone who is looking to adopt. Every time I asked to meet an animal, they called someone on the walkie talkie to tell them to meet me and take me back. Each time I'd wait about 30 mins and have to complain to get someone to help me. Once we got back there, a staff member who could've helped was laughing about how she had her walkie talkie turned down. And saw many other who could've helped hiding back there. The second time when I wanted to see another cat, waited forever too. There was a girl who works in the dog area with blue or purple hair that helped us, even though it was not her area, when she noticed we had been waiting a long time. If it wasn't for her I wouldn't have got to meet my cat. They mark just about every animal as "aggressive". While some may be most are not. The animals are brought into a new, scary, cold environment where they're getting shots and tons of strangers looking at them daily. I don't know what animal would be happy about that. My cat is super sweet and loves everyone he's met. Even in the shelter, he was rubbing on me and loved to be hugged and held. However his shelter records, I got when I took him home, has him down as aggressive lol. The vaccinator even put he was "super aggressive and would likely not hesitate to bite". So he didn't even bite and is "super aggressive"? Um okay lol. Most of the staff here acts like the customers/potential adopters are stupid and know nothing. They were not happy to answer questions and would be condescending. One girl who was in the back with the cats (the same one who laughed about her walkie talkie being turned down) was playing with a cat and was saying to a coworker she wants to take him home but can't. When I asked to see him she acted rude and was like "oh he's not nice, I would stay away". But she was snarky... so she's going to be jealous over a cat she cannot even adopt, that will be put down if not adopted? Makes no sense. I can't comprehend the selfishness. Once I finally met my cat and wanted to start the process of bringing him home, I joined the long line to speak to a staff member at a desk. Overheard a staff member ask another about someone who is outside needing help. The other staff member replied "Our adoption list is long so they can stay outside!" In a snarky tone. After I finally got to speak to a staff member to finalize my adoption, I got out of there immediately. I had been in there for hours. Got there at 2:45 and it was approaching 6. And this was with me having to complain a few times. If I never said anything, bet I would've never gotten to see an animal. I love my cat and am happy I adopted him. However I think they should have staff that actually cares about the animals and wants them to go to a home. Rather than staff that wants to hide in the back and not help, try to keep animals they aren't even going to adopt to themselves, and always in a rush to kick customers out before close. I only gave two stars for my awesome cat and for the girl with the blue or purple hair who works with the dogs. read more

I came here in a quest for my cat to become a big brother and lose his "only child" status as he was becoming lazy and complacent in our home and it was time to introduce a new challenger for my love and affection. Kidding - but I did want to find a new kitty to expand my furry family and this was one of the first stops I made after viewing a precious angel named "Cassie" on PetFinder. While it wasn't meant to be with Cassie or with this rescue, I loved being able to visit all of the sweet babies currently here and I would bring them all home with me if I could. There are so many good cats and dogs here and every single one of them deserves a loving home. They genuinely care about the well being of their babies here and you have to change gloves after handling every younger animal. In addition, if you handle or pet an animal that is currently not feeling well, you are done for the day. This is to prevent sickness from spreading as they do have a TON of animals here and it would be devastating if something were to spread throughout the kennels. I went through SO MANY GLOVES because I wanted to make sure I didn't miss out on a cat just because it was a little more timid or scared. Even some of the more shy kitties absolutely love being held and loved on, so don't be afraid to pet a cat just because it's not begging for your affection. That being said, don't be stupid and pet a cat that's so scared it's cowering or hissing - use your judgement but still show them all some love and hopefully you can find your next fur baby here! read more

My family was blessed with our pit bull mix Sensei, who we adopted from Austin Animal Center 4 1/2 years ago when he was 2 yrs old. With our family never having a dog before we were nervous about the process & not sure on how we would choose the best dog for our family, especially with us having 3 kids in the house BUT adopting from AAC it made the process so easy for us! We would go to AAC & visit w/ all the dogs that were available for adoption & I love how each kennel has a "report card" for each dog listing helpful info on that specific dog like how long the dog as been there, personality traits , skills (house trained, knows basic commands like sit, stay, etc) & each kennel also has a green dot or sign which means it's ok for you to take that dog on a walk or to one of the areas to play w/ the dog to get a better idea on how the dog interacts w/ you. I really liked how there are lots of volunteers around so if you're needing help w/ getting a dog out of the kennel to walk they will help you or just help w/ any questions you may have. Helpful Tip!!!! -even if you are not wanting to adopt a new furry family member you can still visit the Austin Animal Center to visit the dogs who are patiently waiting for their forever homes & take them treats, take them out for a watch, play fetch.. This is what my daughter & I did on our most recent visit to AAC on 7/8/2017 since sadly we have lost our furry baby Sensei a few weeks ago & to honer his memory we we to Austin Animal Center to donate dog treats & to visit w/ the dogs. I read a few of the previous reviews about people having a bad experience w/ staff from Austin Animal Center but PLEASE DON'T let this stop you from adopting pets at Austin Animal Center..believe me I sometimes think animals are waaaay smarter than us humans sometimes:) & there really are awesome animals waiting & needing forever homes at AAC & speaking from personal experience pets really become our family & will bring so much to your family. We adopted two cats about 1 and 1/2 years ago on a whim, which was the best decision of our lives! We got Hades and Pan who are siblings. When we first saw them they were skinny, young, and shy but still played with us in the cat room. My partner was in love and decided that we were indeed taking them home to be apart of our family! The staff was awesome and very knowledgeable about their animals, and gave us a heads up they weren't sure how they'd do with a younger kiddo and may be nervous. BUT they were the exact opposite ;). They have been loving, outgoing, people friendly, playful and the light of our lives. They do extremely well with our 5 year old all things considered (we all know cats don't have the same patience as a dog lol) and have never bit scratched or even hissed at anyone. We like to go every once in awhile to play with the cats and give the dogs some exercise/attention. Definitely recommend adopting or even fostering as they need it now more than ever with the distemper outbreak! They are up front, honest, and spend time with their animals which tells you they care and they are doing their best to serve our community. Austin Animal Center is run by the city of Austin. It's the city dog pound. If you lose an animal, check here first. Don't call, show up because the volunteers don't always know what's in inventory. Most of the shelters like Austin Pets Alive or Austin Humane Society pull from Austin Animal Center. The cute puppies at Austin Animal Center go quickly, but they seem to have more of a selection than the other shelters. The dogs don't get bathed, but they do receive a flea treatment. Dogs are available for pre - adoption even if they are labeled with a red sticker saying they're not available for adoption yet. If a dog is in the process of being reclaimed, you can still pre - adopt a dog should the owner fail to show up. The volunteers and employees were helpful. The place was well run. The grounds were large and well organized. When we walked in, the volunteer directed us to the Smallville wing for dogs currently weighing 25 lbs or less. We were given a number to text and a piece of paper and pencil to write the ID numbers of the dogs we were interested in. The wait was about an hour, and they let us meet a dog labeled with a red sticker, meaning it wasn't available for adoption yet. The pre - adoption process was seamless as well. Check their website for puppies in foster homes. Puppies in foster homes aren't listed at the center in person. If you make a donation, they will give you a tax deductible receipt in the Lost & Found Center. read more

AAC is a place that does a great job considering the unfortunate high amount of animals they take in. The dogs get great care and luckily most animals aren't in for too long. Waiting to get help from a volunteer/employee is sometimes annoying (they tell you to text a number and wait in a virtual line till called) but for them it probably makes sense to use that system so they can dedicate time to the people that are serious in adopting. Once we were helped the staffer, Monica I believe, was great giving us all the information she had on the dog while answering all the questions we had. They were honest about why he was there and things we may need to be aware of when adopting. They want more dogs adopted but not at the expense of the dog not being a good fit. I appreciated the transparency. Given the amount of animals that go through those doors they gave our dog a good basic medical check, neuter, notes on socialization, and kennel shots. I really appreciate AAC's great work and service to the area. The only $75 (check on social media because sometimes adoptions are free) fee for the work they do almost seems criminal. Do not donate. I donated by way of the donor link on the AAC website. I chose to donate automatically every month using my credit card. The problem became apparent when I tried to stop. It is impossible. There is no way to contact anyone since all calls go to #311 and asking for help is ignored. The call backs never happened and a sent email obtained from the FB page was never acknowledged. Beware that once you use that donor link your credit card donations are out of your control. I was forced to close down my credit card account which is quite a hassle. read more

I went to adopt my puppy with my boyfriend on a Friday after finding one we really liked on Thursday, but they don't release dogs into your care unless they come in neutered or are neutered at the shelter. We set an appointment for him to be neutered the following Monday, and to pick him up later that day. We get to the shelter super excited to adopt our puppy, go through all the paperwork, speak with the desk person about his post-op care, etc. As soon as it's time for our puppy to be brought out, we are told they pulled the wrong one to neuter. We now have to wait a week for the next available neuter appointment. How do you mess that up? How do you not ensure what dog is receiving what treatment? Upon being told so, the front desk lady said "we've gotten new employees it was probably them" What? Terrible excuse. Extremely unprofessional and disappointing. read more

Talked to some four eyed Freak in the front that thinks it's funny to grab papers out of my hand aggressively. Beyond wonderful and helpful. We found a small younger adorable dog running on Highway 812, exhausted and confused who almost got hit by several cars yesterday (Sunday) around 5:30pm on our way back from COTA headed to the airport. Not only they were open on a Sunday but the staff was extremely helpful, even being short staffed. Wish we could've brought the puppy back to Los Angeles with us but being that cute and super sweet no doubt she'll find her forever loving home. LOVE this shelter. They actually care about their pets and have a smooth foster / adoption process. The dogs have both inside and outside kennels to stay in and I see workers and volunteers constantly working hard to make them comfortable. Found my best friend here! read more

Please make sure to ask them if the dog has proven to have been dewormed/without worms before you adopt. They do not care about you or your family and will send you home with a dog with worms. They do not check each animal that goes into their shelter and you will end up paying hundreds of dollars trying to take care of something that should have been done before you adopted. Even hospitals make sure babies are healthy before allowing them to be taken home. Disgusting practices there, but please do not stray from adopting. It's not the animals' faults that humans decide to do the bare minimum for eachother. read more

I had gone to this shelter a few different times before adopting my cat, and every time I went the workers were patient, informative, and very kind! I eventually adopted a 1 year old cat that I have had for a few months now. They microchipped her, and spayed her completely for free. I didn't even have to pay an adoption fee! When the bunny shelter my partner in crime and I work with told us that Town Lake Animal Center was moving to a location on Levander Loop, we just had to check it out. Definitely a lot more spacious than the old location and definitely away from the heaviest parts of traffic in Austin as well (at least for the day we went). It was neat seeing the charging stations for electric vehicles. The charging stations only recently started popping up in S.A. so at the time of our first visit, we were standing in awe looking at them with our mouths open and everything. And yes, we even took pics of them - is that bad or what???!? Anyhoo, when we finally got over our amazement, we managed to make it inside. No one really bothered us except for one employee asking if we needed help with anything. We told him we wanted to see the bunnies and he gave us directions. Of course, we stopped a couple of times on our way to the buns - petting a couple of sweet dogs and making me wish we had a bigger house. We finally made our way and just like at the old Town Lake location, the buns were housed with the cats. I always have my reservations about that fact simply because... well, cats + bunnies don't always equal a mutual friendship; however, I do have to say I appreciate that they are at least separated within their shared location. We saw that the volunteers for the bunny shelter only had about three or four buns here (none of which we were familiar with since I believe the bunnies at the AAC are usually bunnies that they (the bunny shelter) consider brand new intakes). We sat with all of them and spent some time looking around. We were really impressed with the cleanliness with AAC as a whole.
