Austin Pets Alive! is near and dear to my heart because of the many animal lives they save. This review is a long time coming as I have many draft reviews that I am still working on getting posted. As the mother of a rescue dog who was going to be euthanized, I am 100% behind everything this thrift store stands for. In fact, every 6 months when I overhaul my closet, I donate A LOT of clothing, shoes, and accessories to the store in support of the cause. I also like to swing by as part of my North Loop jaunt (every few months, hit up North Loop stores and pubs---to include APA!) to make purchases. Found quite a few cute things here over the years not only for myself but friends and family. They've got an amazing selection of items and each time I pop in they seem to have loads more. When my aunt was alive every Christmas she would give me pieces of depression glass as a gift. These pieces were special to me because over the years she thrifted and amassed a fairly large collection. My collection has dwindled over the years through breakage. So I was thrifting looking for pink depression glass. The Burnet Road location is large, well organized with two-stories of items. It is filled with just about anything that you can imagine. Clothing...they have it! Shoes...they have it! Vintage items...they have it! Kitchen and house wears...they have it! Unfortunately, no pink depression glass. I will definitely return to thrift here due to their large selection of things. In addition, their prices are very reasonable. First stop Austin Pets Alive! - Burnet. I learned that all net sale proceeds go directly to support Austin Pets Alive!'s lifesaving programs for animals most at risk. Their clear mission is saving animals' lives, which is so heartwarming. According to staff, Austin Pets Alive! is known for pioneering innovative programs that help keep pets out of euthanasia and place them into loving homes. I first stopped in several years ago and remember thinking they had some pretty interesting things, but these days I thrift almost every weekend, and every time I try to visit, the parking lot is completely packed. Turns out I was just going at the wrong times. I finally had some free time on a Friday, found a parking spot right out front, and was able to take my time browsing. Overall, I like the shop. It's laid out nicely, and I was happy to see that some of the areas that were off-limits during my first visit are now open and stocked with merchandise. I wasn't impressed with the clothing selection, though. The regular clothing section is fairly small, while the downstairs is devoted to "Boutique" clothing. I didn't recognize many premium brands or see many pieces that struck me as especially high quality. Fortunately, I did find one department store top upstairs that fit well and cost only $6, so I still came home with a nice find. The housewares and glassware room has a lot to browse, but if you're looking for collectible glassware, there's very little of it. Most of the shelves are filled with everyday drinking glasses, mugs, and other standard kitchen items. My biggest complaints are the fitting rooms and the location of the regular clothing section. I don't mind curtained fitting rooms--they're pretty common in thrift stores--but these use thin curtains that leave noticeable gaps along the sides and don't do much to provide privacy. Since I was trying on tops and happened to be wearing a tank underneath, it wasn't a huge issue for me, but I definitely didn't feel like I had much privacy. Also, the regular clothing section is upstairs, so I had to climb a flight of stairs just to browse the clothes I was actually interested in. My mobility isn't what it used to be, so that wasn't ideal. I'll definitely stop in again if I'm already in the area and the parking lot isn't overflowing. I probably won't shop for clothes there again, though. Their idea of "Boutique" isn't what I'm looking for, and with the regular clothing section only accessible by stairs, it just isn't a practical place for me to shop for clothes. read more

This thrift store sits directly next to a car wash and across the street from an H-E-B on Burnet Road. They have at least three locations in the Austin area. As other yelpers have mentioned, parking is very limited. One nice aspect of this business as of this writing is the fact that they have a shaved ice snowcone trailer parked next to the road in front of the shop. The majority of the floor is given over to clothing, but they do have a lot of knickknacks to peruse. They do have an upstairs area which is primarily dedicated to men's clothing and accessories. I noticed they had very little in the way of electronics and media. The prices here are really quite reasonable, almost to the level of goodwill pricing, yet with a better selection. If you find something you'd like to try on, they do have two dressing rooms. read more

This was my thrift store stop on a recent trip to Austin. I picked this one because of their mission helping animals. I was initially confused by the pricing so asked staff for help. It turns out they have THREE types of pricing. Here's my interpretation....please correct if I got it wrong. 1. Fixed price -- everything in that category is one set price, colored tags have no bearing. 2. Assorted prices -- higher than fixed priced items, but they have two colored tags for discounts, potentially resulting in lower than fixed prices. 3. Vintage -- always priced higher than the rest. I did find inconsistencies in their segregating and pricing but I cut them slack and "tipped" because it all goes to the animals! Oh, parking is tight, so plan accordingly. read more

For the really great places, you gotta come in and re-review and let folks know...yeah, it's still great! I have been going here for 5 years now and love it just as much or more than I did years ago. The best part of APA (outside of their mission) is the fact that they will do tag colors each week that show things will be half off and then things will only be $1. ONE DOLLAR people! I have gotten SO many items there for ONE DOLLARRRRRR! Another thing I love is when I asked an associate about things that either "don't make the cut for them to sell or don't get sold...what happens?" They told me that other local companies get dibs on things. They also said that material/clothing, etc. goes to a place that deals with it for recycling on a pound basis. So, I say all that to say that things don't go in the trash if they can help it. The staff is always friendly and helpful AND they have a store kitty cat that is there to help you make crucial decisions like "should I buy this"...Hint: the cat always says yes. read more

This place had lots of inventory - two stories of clothing. My daughter and I each found a few things - there were lots of options in sizes XS, small and large. So many cute tops and shorts upstairs, and great prices. Only drawbacks were limited parking and fitting rooms. Aside from that, we walked out with some treasures and felt good about supporting APA. I really liked this resale/thrift store! Found a handful of of items at "ok" prices... $15-20ish bucks for great shape lululemon shirts and $$15 for a nice pair of dress shoes/boots. So not the "really cheap/amazing deal" but very good value for what you get. It was pretty well organized but has minimal fitting rooms so had to wait quite a while since most people went in there with a whole handful of things to try! I will definitely go back read more

We found this place on yelp and decided to stop by. First they have some pretty cool things. Everything is very well organized women's section is downstairs and men's is upstairs. What I loved the most is they had used and new pet section. They also had a book section. They donate to an animal foundation. I found some cute things here. Cool store to check out, sad part is all the guy cloths were junk. Faded or not something anyone would really buy. They may need to cycle some things out. This thrift store is amazing! Everything inside there is clean, reasonably priced, and organized. Staff is super helpful and kind. They have all kinds of deals and even a rewards program where you can get a 50% voucher if you earn enough points! Every dollar you earn there is a point so after 200$ spent, you earn the rewards. It's easy to reach that since everything there is so cool and nice. On top of it all, your money spent goes to helping and supporting the dogs! What a wonderful organization. read more

Shopping at APA Thrift is THE BEST. It's a win win. Great deals for you, shopping for secondhand items is great for the environment, and most importantly, all net proceeds go directly to support the wonderful organization that is Austin Pets Alive! You can find some unreal deals at APA Thrift. I found a 1996 model white Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer with all original attachments, in excellent working condition for $59!!! I purchased an entire winter wardrobe for $60. Including boots, sweaters, and soooo many tops. At this Burnet location, you can fill a trash bag full of clothes for $10 at their upstairs bins. You'll have to spend some time searching, which is half the fun! Make a day of it. I make it a point to donate all of my best clothing and housewares to APA Thrift instead of trying to sell on Poshmark, Ebay, etc. The animals are worth it. When you shop here, remember the greater purpose behind this store and consider adding on a little extra $ at checkout for the animals. I really wanted to like Austin Pets Alive because it's close to home and is a great cause. However, I've been in about 4 or 5 times now and am consistently disappointed. The store isn't very clean, especially the back room. I understand that their merchandise is dependent on donations and somewhat out of their control, but much of it is out of style and in poor condition. Parking is extremely limited and the traffic on Burnett makes it nearly impossible to get in and out of the lot, and unfortunately I've found it just isn't worth the trouble. read more

This is probably my favorite thrift store in town right now! Not only is it extremely affordable compared to every thrift store I've been to in Austin but it has some really good quality items. Everything is current in style, at a really good price point and not to mention they also have household items as well as items for your pets! Not to brag but today I made out really well with some franc sarto boots, lululemon tank top, athleta sweater tank top, and a michael kors skirt for $66. I feel like if I went to any other thrift or second hand store I would never get such good quality items for the same price. APA's thrift store is small and generally well-stocked. They have a good selection for their size though. A small section of everything! My family and I roamed around here for quite a while, so they definitely had something for everyone. One thing that I wasn't a huge fan of was the boutique section. Everything on this side was amazing, but overpriced. Its nice to know that the money is going to a good cause, and I will be putting this thrift store in my general rotation! I don't know what's up with the local thrift stores lately--they're charging WAAAY too much. Austin Pets Alive Thrift not only keeps prices low ($3-$8, with a little bit more for designer duds) and proceeds go to the best cause in town--disadvantaged furbabies! I walked out with Betsy Johnson flats ($8), a Lularoe Julia dress ($5) and an Eyeshadow tank ($3 I think?) for a steeeeal and will be dropping off some stuff of my own to clean out soon. So excited this place is so close to where I live, and I can come quell my shopping addiction without breaking the bank. The staff is super nice and helpful, and the Designer Boutique is filled with gems I can't wait to dive into when I have a bit more dough to spend. I'm torn--I want to shout from the rooftops how awesome this place is, but I don't want it to be totally picked over. But, for the sake of the animals, I suppose I'll let y'all know. read more

This place is so fun and eclectic! You will be greeted with friendly smiles and volunteers hat have a heart for serving and helping out our less fortunate dogs and cats in the Austin area. So many cool things around the store. Fun graphic shirts, top designer items that are super cheap! The store is very clean and you may even see a little 4 legged mut or two running around greeting folks or trying to play security team. The place has good vibes and is taking donations. We carried our stuff in thru the front doors and dropped them off in the very back at a counter like area. Plenty of volunteers around to ask for help or guidance. This place has good vibes and if I'm buying thrift I'm definitely coming here. Plenty of parking. Look for the big sign and tropical palms out front. read more

We popped in here after seeing the great reviews. Found some awesome treasures for a really cheap price. Got a free $10 stuff a bag to venture upstairs which isn't for the faint of heart. I am not only a customer but I also volunteer here and felt I should write a review based on my experiences as a customer but also as a volunteer. As a volunteer, I have enjoyed making new friends who have similar passions and interests as I do in animal welfare and the environment. I was most inspired by volunteer coordinator/assistant manager Heather Lavis. Heather went out of her way to make me feel included in volunteer activities and get me to socialize with other volunteers when I would otherwise be too shy to introduce myself. I really appreciate her helping me find my voice and feel a part of the community but most importantly I appreciate that she always serves as the best example of providing excellent customer service and customer experience. As a customer, I like that the store is organized in a way that I can find the things I need and keeps doing regular sales to make the products more affordable. I like that items can find a new home instead of going into a landfill and therefore diverting pollution. Stores like this facilitate the ability to: Reduce Reuse Recycle. read more
