After three months of sheltering at home, Austin Beer Works was a first outing. They did an excellent job with social distancing, wiping down each table after guests left, and mask enforcement (when not seated at table) in a firm but polite way. No inside seating right now and the outdoor tables are shaded and a good distance apart. It is reservations only. depending on the time you make the reservation for, you will either get an hour to enjoy your table or two hours. They go over all the rules with you when you arrive. They have some great beers, both on tap and in cans. You can purchase some to take home with you as well! I ordered a sour raspberry-lemon Einhorn. So summery and refreshing! I ended up drinking two. My husband had an Essential IPA and the Small Spoon session IPA. We didn't care for the Heisenberg Heff-lager (a bit too banana-ish). The only thing that would have made the difference from 4 stars to 5 would have been some kind of food! Even a bag of chips or pretzels to go with the beer would have been awesome! Beer is great and reasonably-priced with good variety. The food truck out back is far better than it has any right to be, with delicious mexican food at a reasonable price. I highly recommend the fish and barbacoa tacos, as well as the burrito+quesadilla. The chips/salsa aren't too shabby either. Haven't tried the burgers so can't comment on those. If you want an affordable spot to come eat, drink, and be merry in the Austin area, look no further! Plenty of space to sit inside, or if the weather is nicer, even more space out back! I have not been to ABW since I was living in Saudi Arabia and came to visit my sister. Now that the Austin Ale Trail is going on, I am going back to breweries that I have already visited that might be a little too far away to comfortably visit regularly. I have been very happy so far. I vaguely remembered the layout of ABW before I walked in, but walking in instantly brought me back. When it comes to breweries and taprooms, I have been to a lot, like over 650. I have learned to categorize them in different ways, yet I appreciate different nuances in each type of place. ABW is a large, open warehouse-feel brewery. You get the aromas and the heat from the brewing equipment. You are immersed in the brewing atmosphere. It is fantastic. While there are far too many children there for my comfort, some people enjoy that part. I think there was a children's birthday party going on when I visited, actually. The beer is tasty and refreshing. The beertenders are friendly and well-versed in beer terms. I would recommend this place if you want a family-friendly beer drinking environment. read more

One of my favorite breweries in Austin. The service has always been really good. They have a food truck outside that's got killer tacos and burgers. Terrible service. Every staff member we came across was rude and unwelcoming. They made it seem like it was an Inconvenience to order water and just ordering in general felt uncomfortable because they seemed in a rush and unfriendly when there was not more than one person else in line. We decided to try out a brewery near us since we just moved here. We got here around 6:30 and it was decently busy for a Wednesday night. We waited in line with a mask on and ordered. The man was helpful and recommend the cherry sour to me since they don't have ciders. My boyfriend got two different lagers, one was dark and one was light(I think it was called like the best ever or the most awesome) he liked both a lot but preferred the lighter one, and I really liked my cherry sour. It would be nice to see breweries trying to use class beer cups instead of plastic but with covid most places are doing single use plastic sadly. We took our dog and everyone was friendly. They even give you chips and salsa with your drinks. The ambiance was great, there was a food truck, and a cool courtyard with tables and a kids area. All around a cool place! read more

This brewery was our first stop on our brewery tour, but our second favorite brewery. The brewery was really nice, plenty of seating, indoor and outdoor, but they had the doors and windows open so it was really hot inside. The beers were okay, none that I really cared for. They didn't have any wheats or hefeweizen. The service was okay, the gentlemen that helped us seemed put off by us because we didn't seem to care for any of their beer offerings. We were hoping to try their Heisenberg (wheat), but they were out and he said really rudely that we should have been there when they had it. It was a spring seasonal and they sold out really quickly. My question is, if you sold out really quickly, it would seem really obvious that everyone liked it, why wouldn't you make more? Or keep making it? read more

This is probably our go-to brewery so far. The whole $10 for 3 pints and keep the glass deal is amazeballs. Every time I've been here, they've had different designs on the glasses. The boyfriend has accumulated about 5 different ones, and some aren't even standard pint glasses. Plus, if you're a lightweight like me and can only handle a beer or two at a time, you can keep your tokens and use them next time. They'll also do half pours if you ask. Just don't expect to get pampered here. It gets crowded and hot - most people end up sitting or standing outside. There are a couple of porta potties outside for when nature calls. But hey, they have very cold water to keep you hydrated and cool, and the mainstay beers and many of the rotating/seasonals are good. Although the heat is not fun, the atmosphere here is. There are some quirky decorations (I love the unicorn poster), lots of merch, and you're likely to see at least a couple of dogs chillin' outside. Great spot! Definitely would go again. The ambience and decor is cool looking. Parking was easy. Tons of unique merch and beer to go. My wife and I ate lunch here and the food was honestly incredible for the price and for where it came from, which was a food truck around the side of the main building. I had a steak quesadilla which I'd recommend. I had a flight of a few beers which I honestly thought weren't the most interesting I've ever had, but they still were fine and I just enjoyed the chill atmosphere of the place and that it was far removed from the busier parts of Austin. read more

Wanna try this particular style here you go, sampling wasn't a problem. Drank with a delivery driver who told us how much he loved working for this company. It sounds like this might be one of the most commercial craft brews in Austin Texas. I was not disappointed at all. We met a friend here after he got off work and this place was dope. Cool large indoor location out of the way from the downtown area. Reminds me of a lot of the places popping up around here, industrial warehouse turned brewery. We tried 4 beers over 3 hours and everything i had was really good. i think I grabbed the blood orange pale and than one of the ipas. My wife had a porter or a stout and a berlinweiser or something. Everything was really good. The orange pale was super refreshing and the ipa had a nice crisp hop to it!! I really enjoyed everything we tried and we had a couple cans as well when we came home. Cool brewery that has broken out of the small microbrew into the large craft brew market. Its a bit outside of downtown, but great beer and worth the trip for sure!! read more

First things first, the location is AWESOME! One of the few breweries that I don't have to worry if I'm going to find parking or not. The bartenders are also extremely helpful. Some breweries have bartenders that get annoyed when you ask them questions. ABW does the exact opposite, and its even better when you go back for a refill and they ask for your thoughts on the beer. Food truck is also really good! I could type two pages as to why ABW is amazing...but you just need to experience it. read more

After a Sunday morning hike with a friend, we stopped by to try this place. The Second Fiddle and Amber Vision beers were great - especially the later. It's a brewery which now has a bar with taps since the laws changed to allow breweries to sell beer on premise. While I don't love their standard beers, their small batch and special brews are very good. If you like sours at all, get the Einhorn which is a delicious, lightly sour beer which is perfect on a hot day. I also had their Gold Fist (Belgian strong golden ale) and their Belgian IPA and I liked both. I think I've come to realize that they specialize in making delicate beers incredibly well and I can appreciate them a lot more now. The place is still more brewery than bar, which is kind of cool. You literally walk up a ramp alongside the loading dock and then by the employee's lockers before you get to the bar and there are no signs anywhere visible from the road to let you know where it is. I finally found it by looking for where all the cars were parked and then wandering back until I saw kegs. After that, they have a patio out back where there are picnic tables set up and they had a food truck parked. I don't know if they rotate the food truck regularly, but I hope so since the food truck that was parked there was a Maine lobster and clam chowder truck which was only so-so. The space is still very nice and takes full advantage of the fact that you can sit outside in Austin for most of the year. The day I was there they were selling awesome can-shaped (they only distribute their beer in cans and kegs) pint glasses and three tickets for $10. I'm not sure how often they do that, but it's a great deal. The only downside was that they didn't have better food, but I'll just have to hope the food truck is better next time. In North Austin, there lies a system of pipes, mashers, kettles, and tanks that forms and manages one of the main craft beer supplies of the city. That is the definition of a beerworks and it's happening. I came here on an afternoon whim and got myself a flight. My 2 favorites were the peacemaker and white rainbow. What cool names for pleasant-tasting beers. The base of all their beers I've tried were clean-tasting and light. And for more complex beers like the white rainbow, I thought the dancing trail of subtle herbs and spices (lemon peel, orange peel, coriander) coming out in the middle, after the initial clean taste, were awesome. In a place like Texas, you need go-to light beers to deal with the warm, oven-baked, and sometimes muggy weather. Austin Beerworks stays true to itself and its local and state heritage by keeping their beers light and easy-to-drink as the base then building flavors for their other beers on top of that. When they build the flavors, they don't even come close to overdoing it. It's a pinch and dash of the extra flavors so the base of the beer isn't muddled. I appreciated how they weren't trying to produce super hoppy IPAs like we do in Southern California or trying to do super experimental beers to be cool or whatever. They're doing what Austin does. I think the beers they produce here symbolize the community of people you'd meet in Austin and how you interact with them, usually at a long wooden table outside until a sunshower of rain appears out of nowhere. That actually happened and people hurried inside from the patio as I looked on from the bar top working on my flight of beers. These are the beers that I'd be drinking at an Austin get-together of friends at a bench table under a string of patio lights. -------------------------------------------------- QUICK TIPS: -------------------------------------------------- # I liked the White Rainbow a lot, so much so that I got another full pour in a glass after trying it in a flight taster. Whoa! I like the beer for being light and having interesting flavors without being complex. So while it has spices, it's not heavy on those flavors and complements the light IPA body. # Like any brewery, ordering a flight is a good way to try a bunch. I think you can ask for samples if you don't want a flight # This is a great place to build a community aka hanging out with groups of friends who meet other groups of friends as they have bench tables everywhere. I personally prefer stouts and darker beers in general, so I had the Black Thunder. Very smooth, definitely a little lighter than a stout. At $5 a glass, not a bad deal. I did think it a little strange that at 5 PM on Wednesday with a decent crowd, the food truck didn't have some of their food options available... but ended up getting their pimento cheese spread with toasted baguettes, which was very tasty and went well with the beers as a light snack. I would definitely want to return! Will definitely be looking for an opportunity in the future to try more of their beers and hang out in the space. read more
