There is nothing quite like showing up early for your 11:15 appointment, waiting in the reception room until 11:30 when you are told "The doctor had a very important lunch meeting and had to leave." He's not saving a life, delivering a baby or having a family emergency. It's a lunch meeting. "Can you come back in 2 hours?" No. It takes multiple bus rides scheduled in advance to get to this appointment. In response to further inquiries, the nurse responded. "Well, I'm sorry things come up." This doctor on duty, clearly has priorities out of whack. It's time to reevaluate that moral compass Doc! You are seeing patients whose most valuable commodity is time and are wasting it quit frivolously. read more

Run....don't walk....run away and run fast. I cannot say enough bad things acout this place. 3 weeks to get a scan, 2 weeks to get abother, 2 more weeks to "get on the schedule. Machine breaks down, 2 days missed, told it is working again, drive 1.5 hours, it is not working AGAIN!!!!!! read more

This is a practice that couldn't care less about it's patients. I have a brain tumor that is supposed to be scanned every 12 months. 14 months later, I haven't heard from them. When I try to schedule an appointment, I'm transferred from one person to the next, literally for days on end. I've had the same conversation over and over with numerous employees, just trying to get scheduled. All any of them has accomplished is to put me on hold. A patient shouldn't have to spend hours on hold to get a follow-up scheduled. Ultimately, I've just decided to switch practices. If you are a cancer patient, don't put yourself through the additional, unnecessary stress of being a patient at this HORRIBLE PRACTICE. read more

As someone else said, Run - don't walk - from this practice! Your life literally depends on it. My husband started his cancer (Multiple Myeloma) journey here and thank Goddess we left or he might be dead by now. This is a private practice, focused on profits, not patients. They're not associated with any research facility and Dr. Shimkus has no research or clinical trial experience. My husband's experience bordered on medical malpractice and at the very least, negligence. The list of aggrievances is long and shocking: - We wasted two crucial (and physically painful) weeks in starting treatment because the office dropped the ball on contacting our insurance for approval. - They missed lesions on the base of his skull on an MRI. - They scheduled duplicate bone marrow biopsies that luckily my husband thought to question. - They scheduled radiation and chemotherapy AT THE SAME TIME which we subsequently learned is unheard of and dangerous. - After wasting an afternoon to get to the office and after just receiving radiation treatment my husband ended up missing his first chemotherapy treatment because they "didn't have him on the schedule" and Dr. Shimkus was out of the office (!!) Dr. Shimkus was the one who made this appointment and wrote it down on a reminder card for him! - When we asked questions via email we were answered with short one line sentences, often with incorrect or lacking information. We were desperate for information, support, etc and felt alone and confused. - Us: "What "Stage" is the cancer?" Shimkus: "That staging system is for "solid tumors". (Lung colon breast etc) its not relevant here". It is and we later found out he's in Stage 1. - Us: "What's the survival rate for this type of cancer?" Shimkus: "many years". No specifics. No data. No explanation. - Us: "How many Multiple Myeloma patients have you treated?" Shimkus: "I really can't give you a number..." - When we asked about a second opinion (which is encouraged by every doctor especially after a cancer diagnosis) Shimkus not only discouraged it but called the other doctor an "asshole". No joke. - Neither Shimkus nor the office bothered to follow-up after we ghosted them and left for Dr. Matsui at UT Health Austin (world class care and partners with MD Anderson). - It was extremely frustrating to get records transferred to new doctor. - Last but not least, we are still fighting for reimbursement of $4,000+ that we were charged for radiation because they didn't run it through insurance. This is what my husband wrote just before I convinced him to go to another doctor: "This lack of communication and coordination between front office, back office and treatment staff coupled with the duplicate biopsy debacle gives me pause. I'm concerned that this lack of attention to detail filters into other aspects of ACC's practice. I'm losing confidence in you and your team and that is not a position I want to be in as I tackle my diagnosis and treatment". Needless to say, the quality of care you receive in your cancer journey has everything to do with your overall outcome. I feel grateful that we got out of there and I hope that everyone else avoids this place too for their sake and for those that love them. read more

If you have cancer I highly recommend going to Texas Oncology - not Austin Cancer Center! Honestly, some of the doctors and nurses are fine but the company is highly disorganized, you will be prone to long waits and some of the front desk staff are extremely rude and lazy - Round Rock location in particular. They tend to have a high rate of turnover so you never know which doctor or nurse you will be getting from visit to visit. I went through chemotherapy with this company and got through it but the added stress they gave wasn't helpful. Watched my wife go through treatment with Texas Oncology a few years prior and she was treated 100 percent better! read more

I left this office about 18 months ago for many reasons, mostly their inability to perform a phlebotomy because they refused to buy the proper equipment. So why am I leaving a negative review now? Because out of the blue, They started sending me bills from over 15 months ago from a doctor I've never seen. When I called to inquire, no one returned my calls. On the third try, someone did return my call and said That due to issues with their billing system they didn't mail out any bills for more than nine months. So now I am 120 days past due because they didn't know how to send me a bill. I am so glad I never have to deal with them again. They are either incompetent or dishonest or both. read more

7 weeks since my initial appointment when Paiman Ghafoori MD stated he wanted to treat me. No follow up. The phone tree disconnects me. Messages are not returned either by phone or email. In the meantime my condition is worsening. If there was anyone else on my insurance who did this treatment I would go elsewhere. read more

Experienced really terrible communication. Scheduling has been a nightmare. It's been three weeks since we were supposed to get scheduled for a scan. Reaching someone to get scheduling moving along requires leaving voicemails and hoping they'll be prompt to respond, which normally takes at least a day or longer. At this point, feeling helpless at the one place I thought was supposed to help during a situation like cancer. Leaving one star so hopefully they can realize what a huge negative impact this has on the patient's experience. read more

Went in for a blood draw to reduce blood thickness. Paid a copay and thought everything was good. Few months later started receiving bills for over 400 because they billed it as a surgery instead of a lab. I have spent two years trying to get them to change it but no response. I have tried to file with Texas board of Insurance and have turned them in to the Texas Medical Board for false billing procedures. Do not waste your time period. I was referred to doctor Houssain from my PCP for iron deficiency for iron infusions. On my 1st visit she found out that I have a lot of cancer running through my family and that's all she wanted to talk about. So at the end of the appointment when I asked her about the iron infusion she said that somebody would call to schedule the appointment for me and I'd get the infusions done, so I assumed that whenever I got the phone call they would go over the process (you know what to expect, any type of reactions, or anything that I need to prepare for, take beforehand anything like that.) So I got a phone call to go over the out of pocket cost, IOK that period they told me that I would get a phone call the next day to schedule the iron infusions. The next 2 days came and went to no phone call so I called up there to schedule the appointment and they couldn't find that I was supposed to get the in infusions so we got all that figured out and got the appointment scheduled, Still nobody went over the procedure with me. Sorry so I thought maybe OK the nurses will do that when I go in for the infusion. Is it no that didn't happen either I found out about the procedure from what I read on the Internet. In the meantime, I was supposed to get referral to a gi specialist for some scopes and by now it's been about a month. At the recheck appointment the doctor had assured me that her nurse would get to it immediately because it doesn't look like it have been sent out 4 weeks prior to that when it was supposed to be, and to this day still has not been sent out. I have finally just called my PCP and she got referral sent out the same day and I've been scheduled and will be seen within the next 2 weeks. And then come to find out I made an overpayment of about $600 that I've been trying to get a contact with their billing office since October 11th it's now October 22nd and between leaving voicemails and messages on the portal I have not heard back from them. And you have to contact them to start a refund process and you have to actually speak with someone so unfortunately nobody is calling back to speak to me so I can start that refrund process. And the last, thing on my initial visit this doctor she put on the portal that there was a normal exam you know heart and lungs sound good all the different palpatied areas were normal... funny thing is that there was no physical exam done on that 1st visit. But my insurance was charged for it. read more

I've had an eh-ok experience with Austin Cancer Centers. Number one chief complaint-communication. It shouldn't take two weeks for an exchange of paperwork that I was needing urgently and now my doctor is moving to Texas Oncology. It's been three weeks and they have not yet sent records. I've been diagnosed with brain cancer, I'm unemployed, without a working vehicle, and three children. This would be greatly assisted with efficiency on their end. I am frustrated because I have exhausted every effort in moving this along. read more

Dr Goorebeck is wonderful. Great dr, awesome personality, knowledgeable , all of it. Scheduling and follow up has been a nightmare and cost my husband and I a lot of unnecessary time and money. Laverne has been especially challenging, lacking compassion , horrible at follow through and gets amnesia when she messes up what feels like your whole life when your in limbo with your health. Please don't let Laverne and the phone system keep you from the best oncologist in Austin! read more

I had an appointment with hematologist dr. Rodriguez concerning possible lung emboli. Clot was discovered in Md Anderson cancer center and I got 2 months worth of blood thinner injections. Dr Rodriguez was supposed to decide on the follow up treatment: pills or injections. (One cannot interrupt blood thinners). Dr. Rodrigues 1. Required new ct scan 2. recommended new doctor from their clinic. I refused both because procedure was not approved by my insurance and I my cancer is treated by Md Anderson. After that dr. Rodriguez just forgot about me. So I lost prescription and now just hope that clot is gone. I never saw such inhuman behaviour in health care institution before! read more

The RN staff and customer service staff at Austin Cancer Center (ACC) are among the worst I have experienced my entire life. A person, who has cancer, is often frightened and emotionally fragile and yet, ACC staff appear oblivious to this. Here is the most recent incident with ACC: I was just called by ACC finance to advise me I will owe $600 for a new "injection." My doctor never mentioned this to me so I asked what the medication was. She gave me the name of the drug and when I looked it up, were terrible, disfiguring side effects. After asking for and being refused the option to speak with my ACC physician, finance transferred me to a RN voice mail (without asking me first), who called me six hours later and was overtly perturbed (she told me she was) at my expression of concern about what was happening and why. She spent most of the five minutes we were on the phone talking over me to the point I was not allowed to ask questions about other treatment options, when I finally broke down in tears and asked her if she could be a little more kind. At this point, she said no, she could not and hung up on me. As I am terribly upset, I called the ACC operator and had to leave a voice message for the Senior Director of Operations to see if he will help answer my questions. GO TO ANY Other Provider than Austin Cancer Center. By the way, some of the doctors are pleasant and seem competent but other are also short tempered, which is not what a cancer patient needs to deal with on top of having cancer. read more

This place is incredible......so if you have a question about your bill, don't go to the doctor you got it from, they're gonna send you to some outerspace billing dept that doesn't even know why or how the bill accumulated and don't expect them to answer any questions regarding the services, amounts, statement so you'd be better off finding an office who knows what they are doing????? read more

If I could give zero stars I would. We had Dr. Nanda and he was the best. After he left, my mom was transferred to Dr. Shimkus and he was so horrible to my mother. He wasn't empathetic, didn't listen to my moms concerns, and never provided a caring environment. He failed to notify us about scan results. The infusion center failed to give us blood results. My mother ended up passing away and when we notified the office, they were very matter of fact. They could have cared less. Please spare yourself the hurt and search for another place for care. read more

I have been going to Dr. Gorrebeeck at Austin Cancer Center (North) for the last 17 months. She is great. Three/four weeks ago, I was told by a physical assistant at the monthly appointment that Dr. G was leaving. The next week I got an email stating she would be there until April 27. I called to request a phone call this past Monday, April 23. I was called back to be told she was already gone. State law requires 30 day notice to patients. ACC told her just to leave (I think when she gave her required 30 day notice.) There was NO 30 day notice. I am really upset with ACC's callus approach to this. From where I am, it seems the management didn't want her to have final appointments with patients. We are not going to her with a hurt toe or broken finger. This is life and death crisis in all patient's lives. To deny patients closure and advise I believe is very close to cruel. In my opinion, ACC has acted unethically by acting as if all doctors are just interchangeable and all patients should just take whomever they decide to assign us to. I am looking outside of ACC to find a good doctor. I don't trust their ethics or at least, their apparent concern for the emotional and physical well being of Dr. G's patients is completely unacceptable. read more

I'd give 5 stars for medical services, but I only gave 2 because of the terrible customer service. They don't get back to you with test results, and when you call they don't answer your question until the next day. When you call, it takes 20 minutes to be told that there is no one available to talk to you. They are also confused about billing. Be sure you don't get charged twice for a visit or service. read more

They are horrible at providing empathetic, professional care. They take forever to get test results and do not communicate those results to you. When you call it takes days for them to return calls, and when they do it is to tell you they know nothing. No one takes responsibility and they could care less for you the patient. Do not go here if you want professional, empathetic, care that you should be receiving. You are just a number and money to them. They could not care less for you as a human being. read more

I was diagnosed with DCIS in February and began 6 weeks of Radiation Therapy on 4/22. From day 1 everyone has been friendly, caring and helpful, I've been under the care of Dr. Warhoe and Dr. Gorbeek and recommend them to anyone who might need a Radiation and/or Medical Oncologist. Dr. Warhoe's nurse Jennifer is also kind, and compassionate and is there to answer any and every question you might have, and willing to do whatever it takes to make sure your care and comfort come first. I can't say enough about my Radiation Therapists: Dana (both of them), Darby & Brad they are caring, professional, and have great senses of humor (to put up with my lame radiation jokes). =) Even the front desk staff, Yasmin & Olivia are friendly and helpful. I hope and pray you won't have a need for them, but if you do, I highly recommend Austin Cancer Center. read more

If you or a loved one are sick, you probably want to avoid seeking treatment at this facility. We were told, and I quote, "we apologize. There are just too many sick people. We don't have time to answer questions." We were told this by the Physician Assistant at the Lakeway center. In a nutshell, we had an appointment to meet with out oncologist to get a diagnosis and treatment plan. We had been waiting a long time to get the diagnosis. On the morning of our appointment, we were called and told that they had double booked our appointment time and needed to cancel. Without explanation, they told us to go to another doctor at another center in one week to do radiation again. No explanation why. No diagnosis. Just go back to the radiation doctor. We've been down this road for awhile so we assumed the diagnosis was not good. How painful it was to be told what to do, but not why. And, no one would communicate with us about what was going on. We had experienced similar indifference with this staff a couple times before, but never on this level. From the reception staff, to billing, to the PA's, our experience with this center has been exasperating. They have cancelled other appointments at the last minute, without explanation. The billing staff have been rude and have inappropriately discussed finances with us quite loudly in the reception area for all to hear. Though we had an 11:30 appointment to get the diagnosis, they put us off until, finally, the PA came out into the lobby to give us the diagnosis!! We have been down this road before and have lost other family members to cancer. The other treatment teams have all been very professional, compassionate, thorough, and were willing to provide direct diagnosis and answer whatever questions we had. The doctors in this center may be of this caliber. But, the reception, billing, and lower level medical professionals are insensitive and unprofessional. Definitely not what you want or need when you're dealing with something as scary as cancer. read more
