The Austin Chronicle are real ones! I wrote them an email asking if they had physical copies of a particular issue and they replied yes and offered to personally mail a copy to me! If that isn't community-centered journalism, then I don't know what is! The Austin Chronicle has constantly kept me informed on critical topics that otherwise more mainstream Austin papers wouldn't ever cover. An Austin institution since 1981. They cover local news in ways that the mainstream daily can't, or won't, and their integrity is way higher. They're not perfect (e.g., Mary Tuma petulantly screaming "anti-choice!" at every opportunity, something her award-winning predecessors who covered the same topics never did), but it's hard to imagine Austin without the Chronicle. read more

Austin Chronicle is the Chronic! This local, free weekly newspaper is available in boxes and stands across the city. Go to most local establishments, and you'll find free copies of the Chronicle. The Austin Chronicle is a great resource for the city of Austin. They do in-depth, liberally left leaning reporting on local issues. They do interviews and research on a few lengthy articles per week to expose corruption or someone getting their rights violated. It tends to be a bit biased towards the liberal side, but the whole city of Austin is also biased, so it works out. As conservative as Texas is, Austin is a bleeding liberal city, so this slant on the news is appropriate, I feel. The music and events info is some of the best in the city. They are especially helpful and useful during SXSW to find out what's happening across town. Austin's the Live Music Capital of the World, and this paper is the place to find out who's playing where. The film listings and reviews are especially helpful as well. Their full color layout shows a few stills of some of the movies, and makes it clear what the movies are about. I appreciate the advertisers in here, and do actually read the ads here. I feel discouraged that the Chronicle has been dropping cartoons and regular columns on a regular basis. I wish they'd bring back or rerun Life In Hell. Be sure to pick up a copy today! read more

It's like a ritual: every Thursday, be sure to go by a coffeehouse to pick up a copy of The Chronicle. While they don't have extensive news coverage (that's what the internet is for, anyway), I enjoy the intelligent articles and that each week seems to focus on a different theme. My only complaint is the film reviews. I feel that the writing is more like a stream-of-consciousness diatribe, less about the movie itself and more about the writer's clever experience and perceptions. (Wait, isn't that what we're all doing here?) Perhaps I should read them more for entertainment. I generally trust their ratings, so if anything, I'll heed those. read more

Jessi Cape and her lack of conviction to being an unbiased journalist is part of everything wrong with today's news and her attitude and inability to be unbiased is the reason I am taking my time to write this review. Juiceland doesn't deserve any bad reviews but this narrative that this chronicle allowed to spin and the lack of information to provide a very specific view shows the audience that they are activist writers. 2 stars because I'm hoping there is someone there with more sense. read more

The Chronicle reminds me what Austin used to be like on any given day. Community oriented, local topics, timely events and tons of information about MUSIC n this city. I find it fair and balanced in a world where conservative viewpoints have blinded the masses much like mindless zombies who think Donald Trump represents their viewpoint. I like the Chronicle, but I am using it less and less. This used to be my weekly stop to see what was happening in Austin the next week, but I have found a couple of places on the Internet that are much easier to read and navigate then reading through all the ads of clubs to find out who is playing. www.pollstar.com I'm sure the Chronicle will become a much better resource as I get more integrated into the Austin culture (I've only lived here for 5 months). I am still addicted the Salt Lake City Weekly (which is almost identical to the Chronicle) only because I still understand what they are writing about and referencing. Soon, I will be able to read the Chronicle without needing a Austin interpreter. Of course they get 4 stars, because independent left leaning papers are essential. read more

Sorry, I'm not going to write a love letter to the Chronicle. I appreciate all they do for Austin with their support of SXSW and so many other community projects and the fact that they provide us with an alternative paper. For that alone I give three stars. I just can't get over how opinionated they are. Anyone who doesn't subscribe to their viewpoint tends to get painted as being uneducated, bigoted or homophobic. If they're so into personal liberty, how about giving readers a chance to think for themselves without insulting them for it? If you don't believe me, just take a look at the next time they make a list of political candidates they endorse. I also take off for some music reviews they've given slamming local artists. I'm still waiting for that Raoul Hernandez record to come out.... read more

I read this newspaper from beginning to end, then back again. They ARE a highly politicized, left leaning organization, but for a town whose city paper shows suspect support for right wingers, we need it. With so many self-righteous newspapers and networks feeling justified in unapologetic right wing rants, no reason we can't have a sharp rag to counter balance it. Features are great, writing is credible, the scope of connection to big timers in politics and entertainment is sound. SO unlike other weekly papers of a city this size. There is nothing like it. Like the New Yorker, I am constantly finding myself lost in in-depth articles of issues and subjects I thought I cared nothing about. Now THAT's a paper. The Chronicle makes me look forward to Thursdays to stay connected. A true city paper. read more

Austin Chronicle, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... The Chron is everything the Statesman ain't. Great, incisive reporting. Austin-appropriate politics (well, IMO, of course). Everything I need to know about what's hip, happening and fun in town for the week. Click and Clack. And the best horoscope EVER, Rob Brezny's Free Will Astrology. At one point in time, I became convinced that Rob Brezny was following me around and writing his predictions specifically for me. Even the ads, which are admittedly plentiful, are amusing and interesting and often advertise deals or sales that I am actually interested in checking out. I love the Chronicle, and am so very glad that it's here to provide a foil to our lame daily paper. Hooray for the Chron! read more

I tend to go to the music listings first, then I go from cover to cover...always amused by The News of the Weird and the Shots in the Dark. I secretly wish that one of them would be going out to me but, alas, it has never happened to my knowledge. I'm also more apt to believe their movie reviews than anyone elses. The other Yelpers are right, there is an excessive amount of advertising, but I actually look at all of that, too and discover new places to go and boutiques to shop at. I highly recommend that out of towners pick up a Chronicle to plan their weekends accordingly. read more

When my theater company received its first review in the Chronicle, I was up at the crack of dawn to read the article on the on line paper. Then I gallivanted all over town, desperately trying to find a copy at like 6 in the morning. ( What can I say, I'm on a mission!) Although sometimes I have found that the Chronicle likes to sugarcoat some of its reviews, on the whole I think it is a terrific paper. When I want to read the most bizarre and roundabout horoscope ever, or see if anyone left me a note in the personals section, or find out what new hip restaurant I m going to visit and review for yelp- this is where I turn. Pick it up every Thursday at most cool spots, restaurants etc. But don't try to find one until mid afternoon. With the lack of fab papers in this town, The Chronicle is where it is at. read more

Every Thursday, I pick up this publication. It is a weekly and has every listing of everything that is going on from kids activities to gay festivals to arts and crafts shows. The ads are extensive, but they have to be because the publication is free. I love reading anything by Margaret Moser because she is so descriptive and easy to read. The movie reviews are a little harsh, but most of the time dependable. Their articles are long, but if they hit the right subject, very interesting. The music listings are the best because they publicize what is going on for a full week, not just the weekend. It is a fantastic local paper. Pick it up almost anywhere in town if you are coming to visit! read more

For whatever my two cents is worth, I also love the Chronicle. I could write an in-depth description and critique, but it would probably end up being as long as one of their weekly editions. So instead, I'll say that I think we are lucky to have such a grand publication in our little city. I do agree with Jackson. They are very opinionated. But their stance is confident, which I admire. I am overwhelmed by the sheer amount of content in this paper. I sometimes have a fleeting moment of panic when I think about trying to read the whole issue before next week's print! Unlike my ramblings on this page, The Austin Chronicle is a well-written and thorough newspaper. There's a good amount of ad space, but they cover just about everything Austin and their inky pages are a reputable reference point for local happenings and upcoming events. This newspaper is also entertaining. Anyone who claims to never have laughed at "Shot in the Dark" is lying. Pick up the Chronicle on Thursday and head to a coffee shop (as Alexandra wisely suggests in her own review). I doubt you'll be complaining about a wasted afternoon. One of my favorite things to do throughout each week is work my way through the Austin Chronicle. I read it cover to cover, and I always get a solid combination of information, entertainment, interesting news, local politics, and lots of other Austin-isms. In all honesty, I think Austin would be a different place without this fantastic and FREE publication. From local news to music listings to just about everything else going on, the AC delivers it all. Every single week! Yes, there will be stuff that doesn't interest you or that you disagree with. But hey, the paper was written for hundreds of thousands of people, and you're just one of them. No offense. Read it. Love it. read more

Every thursday I mat and laminate my Austin Chronicle, I place it on a gold pillow and turn pages only whilst wearing white gloves. Do allow this Holy Grail to be viewed by out of town guests to discover fun Austin things. But be sure to cut out the Easy Street section so to discourage them from welcoming strangers in bondage gear knocking on your door in the middle of the night. Also, expect the A Shot in the Dark section to one day top Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs chart, triumping over Self-Actualization. It serves its purpose: to make money (have you seen how many ads it has?) and give a calendar of local events. Oh yeah, and it's usually available in a pinch when I don't want my hair to get wet. That said, I just don't like to read the articles, and I can't stand the layout. But I'm very picky about layout. The columns are too wide and the text is too small for easy reading. If they went to a smaller column grid, I'd give them another chance. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty bleeding-heart liberal and proud of it, so I understand the function of such a publication. But I'm also a journalist (should that be a disclaimer?), and I just don't think it's that well written or presented as far as opinion and essay-based journalism goes. I'll pick it up if I'm waiting to meet someone and it's the only thing available, or if I want movie listings, but not for serious reading. (And yes, I'd write the same review if I weren't working for my current employer. In fact, I wrote almost the exact same thing ages ago, then decided to wait and see if I was serious about it. I am. I just hate their layout, and I can't get over it.) read more

We Austinites are very fortunate that we have a single point of reference for the arts and events in our town. Having lived in places where multiple street newspapers vie for attention, things can get silly in a hurry. Thankfully, the Austin Chronicle delivers all the substance you need to "get" Austin without being too bloated by stories that no one cares about. From movie reviews to recommended music performances to features with theater groups, you're covered. There are also restaurant reviews and recommended events for families, freaks, and all points in between. The feature pieces are decidedly Texas with an Austin slant and even through the author's tend to lean a bit to the left on many social and political issues, the coverage seems fair even when the author is taking a side. And it's free. Pick up a copy or peruse it online. read more

Sometimes I want a little more human/local interest, and a little less political conspiracy. I understand the role of a local alterna-weekly and its perceived need to be cause-focused, but the Chronicle takes it a bit too far. In a city I am very proud to be a part of I think there is much more to be covered, much more to be celebrated, than the Chronicle bothers to cover. I want to learn more about my city and the amazing people in it and a little bit less about the next thing that is going to destroy it. Content aside, for as many pages as this paper has, it sure is lacking in real content. I can manage to finish all the interesting content in this paper in less than the amount of time it takes to drink a cup of coffee, and that is even flipping all the pages. I would read this much more often if I literally could pick it up and put it in my back pocket and read interesting content for 30 minutes, but alas, the Chronicle does not deliver. read more

This review is about my experience as an advertiser in the Chronicle. The paper has been around a while. I've enjoied it and I've seen many copies being enjoied. You literally can't go anywhere in the city without seeing one. I'm a Licensed Massage Therapist. Been around for about 10 or so years and been advertising successfully in various places in that time. I have to say that the Chronicle, for one reason or another, has been one of my worst return of investment sources of advertisement. In the year that I have been advertising with them I have only made back around %12 of my investment with them. That's terrible. The calls that I got in reference to my ad were one of three things usually: 1. Asking for a %70 discount. 2. Asking for sexual favors. 3. Upon hearing my voice....Asking if I had a female staff member. My advertising was professional mind you. No half clothed pictures, no suggestive wording, etc. As a professional male Massage Therapist I can absolutely not recommend that you advertise with them. I think that It might be different for female massage therapists or other businesses, but I can only speak to my experience advertising with them. I will say that Mendy, my account rep, was fantastic. The company seems to be run well and is quick on the turn around for emails and calls. If ever there was a problem with my ad(and there were print errors on some occasions), they were quick to fix the problem and offer something as a way of making it up. Thank you for the year of great service, but I can't recommend them. It simply does not pay. read more

I don't care about politics, so I don't read too many of the articles. I always read the Freewill Astrology, most of the time it confuses me. I like the comics and the Shot in the Dark ads. I like the restraunt reviews and some of the movie listings. All of that good stuff. Best Of Austin is great. I could wallpaper my room with the front pages. I think that would be cool. I'm always broke so it's good that the paper is free. and I can just imagine about how good those restraunts are. and all of those ads for boutiques and services just piss me off........... But its cool! Uniquely Austin! and I am glad I can find it in San Marcos. Usually at Hastings, but I'm sure its available at Planet K and elsewhere, I just don't get out much. This newspaper could be so much more. It really is looking backward; each issue has some kind of euphoric recall to the Austin of days gone by; meanwhile all of the awesome music happening in the present moment is pretty much overlooked. Let's get more specific about Gluten Free and Grass Fed Beef offerings in the local restaurants. Your annual restaurant poll should have a category for gluten free dining, not just gluten free bakery treats. Great film section. Great info on local politics; but beware, they are happy with the status quo, perhaps a reflection of their longing for the past. Example: they harp on how the local sheriff is deporting undocumented people unnecessarily, but then go on to endorse him in the 2012 election; his opponent is the clear choice for those wishing to make Austin a more friendly locale for undocumented immigrants. He is worse than the maricopa county sheriff in AZ if you compare the numbers! Good info on soccer. The fashion section is a waste. Obsequious shouts out to the who's who congniscenti. Let's get some short stories in there. need about 5-10 more pages of music reviews, upcoming events, interviews. read more

38 years strong of sticking it to The Man and still the fine plp of The Austin Chronicle get up early every stinking day with a raging woody and all warm, wet, and willing for getting their truth on and getting said truth out to us poor huddled masses thus encouraging us to get up, get it on, and get off our asses to engage with the world and each other. Although it can be a lot of fun thumbing through the pages while waiting for the files to transfer over at channelAustin (www.channelaustin.org). I got no complaints for the Austin Chronicle. They have them everywhere and they're free so I always pick up a copy. It's got listings for all kinds of events going on in the city, music and movie reviews, etc.. The comics are kinda weird, but usually pretty humorous. read more

Saw Buddy Guy at the Moody last night in Austin. An 80 year old man with the voice and the guitar chops still to cut heads. I don't get why he should have to point to individuals in the crowd and tell them to be quiet a dozen times (he went beyond asking them to be quiet-- he told them to shut the ref up). You got the greatest living Chicago blues man extant, be respectful and listen. SRV and Hendrix and Clapton and Page did. It was a master class in the history of the blues and he was telling the story. He shouldn't have to point out a heckler to say I'm not playing SRV I taught SRV and Clapton and came before them and here are the people I learned from. He would start out with a tale about picking cotton in Louisiana and boom boom boom boom some rich entitled vegan hipster with a bun would shout out "of course you did! Hillary 2016!" It's troubling. One other African American couple besides me in the crowd of rich white people who know nothing about the blues or RnB. The ancient baby boomers were the worst. Please stay home and watch Barnaby Jones or hill street blues reruns instead. Or move to Branson and do music a favor. ACL Live venue has jumped the shark if that's the way they behave. Too many Californians, hipsters and Kardashian wannabes yelling over a genius while he is playing or talking or singing and selfying themselves to death during a performance. Being white and able to pay 62 dollars for a ticket does not entitle one to be a music fan or act like a douchebag. I have a new way of wearin my hat This big smile on my face-- You didn't put it there. My woman did get me a pokedot guitar strap for Christmas. signed by Buddy and he did play some old school Marvin Gaye and couldn't stand the weather by SRV and strange brew by cream (those were his before theirs) though. I don't care for material things generally but that's very nice. Blessed in the way I need not care about things. And the Peterson brothers were extraordinary as always. That younger kid at 17 yo has crazy jazz chops like Jaco P or Stanley. See them at Continental Club. read more

When i first came back to Austin, i remember my co workers would go out on thursdays and not come back until they found this paper. i love this. i have yet found any other paper that compares. this review is more for new Austin people. what i loved the most at first was the news of the weird. every thursday i was rollin' around laughin' at idiots and their crimes. then i realized this paper has every bar and their events. drink specials, concerts, shows, etc. i cant say anything more than whats been said. but for shT and giggles read the personals, or check out a shot in the dark. one day some lady will say they saw me and at what time plus location. i will read it. and i will smile. to finally be noticed.....awww the love. read more

Overrated. Dry. Not much use for businesses. They don't respond to my letters; I guess they are too busy quoting important people like Greg Abbott. At least it's free so if you need something to read on a bus ride, this might entertain you a little. read more

Its unfortunate that AC is so biased, I guess it balances out media such as FOX. Each week Im surprised at the extreme set of narrow lenses worn. If anything, the AC has helped push me into an unlabeled category politically, economically, and such. I guess hoping to find an unbiased media source is still just a dream. From political endorsements, to the economy, to public transportation, to social insensitivities...the perspective is very predictable and boring- very contrarianist and stereotypical. On a good note, its a great hands on resource for movies, music and other happenings around town. read more

This paper is about as biased as they come, but it's almost always an interesting read and it's my preferred source of in depth reporting on Austin issues. They have great syndicated columns, though I'm still mad about them giving up Life In Hell and Red Meat (which I can now get in The Onion). Free Will Astrology, as Michelle mentioned, is what I most look forward to reading every week. That and the Lynda Barry comic. I don't like some of their writers and sometimes the topics are slow, but I really enjoy reading some of their music and politics writers and they can always be counted on to have a couple of very interesting stories every week. Their website is also fun to peruse when work is slow. There are a few outspoken local characters that liven things up in their comments section. Great fun all around. People like to say Media is biased... and they're right. But with the Chron' you their bias is out in the open. Wether you agree with their position or not your going to get a well written story. Movie reviews are to be taken with a grain of salt though, they some times get a bit Film Elitist. Show listings/music and food sections are great though. Always a good read for what's going on aroud the town. Probably the best free rag I've ever read (short of the Villiage Voice) read more

Let me start by saying I love the Chronicle. My two Stars are for the Food Reviews-Restaurant Roulette Only....When I was new to Austin, and naive in the Yelp ways, I would pickup the Chronicle each week and eat at places based on what they had to say. (Really!) Roulette is appropriate for more than one reason. First being it may not even be open any more! Do they not have someone who checks these things before putting it in the paper? There are several that still show up that are closed, closed , closed. Second, they don't have a bad thing to say about anything. You don't have to tear a place down, but let's be honest, when reviewing, review the good, the bad and ugly. It's like the food section has multiple personality disorder. With the fingers on the pulse of what Austin is eating, with Best Of Austin and Food-O-File , and then onto the totally whack and out of touch roulette. Take your meds. read more

Great free publication you can find out and about, it's full of every bit of information you'll need to arm yourself with before your next adventure in Austin. They have excellent classifieds and this paper is a must if you're trying to get the inside scoop on pop culture in Austin. Why spend money on a newspaper if you're only looking for the fun local stuff anyways. Great value and free. read more

One of the more interesting media sources in town. Controversy is always abound within the pages of the Chronicle.

It's a free publication, they have some wonderful people writing for them. One of my favorites would be Stephen Moser who does "After a Fashion". (the user below spelled his name wrong btw) He speaks his mind and is honest on what he does, and doesn't like. He has been truly supportive to local stores and designers who deserve it. Some may not agree with what he says at times, but I Iike that he speaks from the heart. He knows his fashion history and it shows in his columns. Above all I think he is fair, I've seen him review a fashion show that he wasn't a fan of, and it made those people try harder and the next show he gave rave reviews. It's not personal, I love that! read more
