Love this bookstore! They have a good selection of books and curated knick knacks. It's a fun place to browse through, the staff are friendly and prices are good.

After a brunch with friends, we wanted to go to a local bookstore we had not been to before, so we headed to Book Woman. As with most places parking is very limited, you can't park on the side as BLUSH refuses to allow you to unless you are a customer of their store, I get the limited space but maybe be a little willing to not be a jerk and set limits or something. Its why we rarely go to places like this even when we want to. Anyway back to Book Woman, we parked and the entrance is loaded with art and signs for books and woman's choice and Pro LGBTQ+ and so much more, I have pictures. They still do require you to be masked even if fully vaxxed which is rare in this day and age so just know that, they do have signs but as there are lots of signs you may possible miss it even with it being the one on the door at eye level. It says they have masks if you don't have one, my wife works in a hospital so we had masks on us. Shana Says: It is very cute, they have a ton of stuff for the size of the store. I got caught up in one or two sections so I didn't see a lot of it. It is a nice shop filled with so much stuff, books, totes, t-shirts, pins, earrings, bumper stickers, etc. They have something for everyone! I have seen many of the reviews on here talk about bad customer service but the lady running the store the day we went was friendly without being overbearing. Shana had some questions about a sticker and the lady explained what it was, the story behind it, and expanded to other related things without prompting. She was very nice. We found several books, being a local independent bookstore it is a tad more expensive then say Half Price books or a used book store but you are helping keep a local business open and a book store at that and it has some unique books you are unlikely to find elsewhere. They had a book we ended up getting called Jokes to offend men which had chapters like Jokes for men who explain Tarantino movies and various chapters like that. It is a fun book. Worth checking out if you are in the area. Support Local Business!

Wow, I am so happy Yelp came through again, introducing me to such a beautiful bookstore with amazing energy. Book Woman has such a diversity in the selection from local, to mainstream, to critical theory. It is very peaceful. The kind of vibe that shields the annoyance of life's interruptions. Come here to get books that will expand your knowledge and leave with your soul enriched. The parking was easy and no fuss which is rare in ATX. Tip...Bring your Mask OR look to the left as soon as you enter the door (by the hand sanitizer) to get a courtesy mask.

Highly recommend for books, gifts, shirts, jewelry, cards, Austiny things, and more. I live super south Austin and never make it north often but came here for a Yelp event and I'm so glad I did! I bought books, shirts and want to go back for more. They have a great selection from women's bodies, politics and stories, lgbtq, gender and identity, children's books, diversity and inclusion, and more. To get a good idea of what they have - check out the 100 pictures features. Definitely worth the visit. You won't be disappointed.

I discovered Book Women through Yelp's event this week. It's a very unique and special bookstore in N Lamar and I was very excited to find so many literature collections on women empowerment and gender identities. It's such a nice environment to support local businesses, artists and D&I and I highly recommend a visit. The Yelp event is ongoing through July 2 2023. It's fun and quite simple, you basically just have to check in on Yelp and then the person at the counter will give you a Pride Tote Bag with some goodies inside. The event seems to be a very good opportunity for people to explore this unique bookstore and connect with those frequent visitors to the shop. In addition to books, they also sell a lot of different stuffs to shop, including puzzles, stickers, cards, painting books, etc. definitely worth a visit!

This place is going to be my new go to for books! The entire selection was phenomenal. I felt so much cozy, inclusive, intentional energy with each section. I will absolutely be back & appreciate women creating spaces like these with deep respect for indigenous, queer, and feminist people.

Bookwoman has been my go to bookstore for years. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, but also so knowledgeable and eager to give suggestions. They stand by their customers and their community and I'm always glad to support a local business who looks out for one another.

    Happy Pride at Book Woman!

This store is one of my happy places. They really know what they're doing here, they care SO MUCH, and they really do everything they can for their customers. As a disabled queer person who is high risk for COVID just as much now as I was in 2020, it means the world to me that BookWoman cares enough about accessibility that not only do they stock a section on disability advocacy and activism, they still require masks in 2023. I feel seen when I am there, I feel like my presence and stories matter. I love chatting with the employees. Audrey has been especially friendly and helpful, and their book recs have been spot on. I come here for gifts and self care treats, and sometimes just to BE. It's a very important place, and I'm proud to support them on Libro.fm too!

This is a great locally and woman owned bookstore that specializes in feminist and lgbtq topics, among others. They also have other small items like stickers, cards, and tarot decks. They will order books for you, but not any book, as I came to find out. As other reviews have mentioned, I had a condescending encounter with the clerk working that day. I asked if they had a section where I could find books on cryptids and the clerk said that they don't carry such books as they deal with conspiracy theories and fringe science, and I should try half price books (such a sick burn haha). I don't think it was such a stretch to ask about that topic, as they have a whole section on witchcraft . So watch out what you ask about and say here, you might get blasted, but I also thought that the encounter was on par to librarian crankiness so I wasn't too mad.

Every time I drive by this place it make me happy knowing that they are still thriving. Book Woman is a legit Austin institution. They have such a wide variety of books by women, for women, about women and a good handful that does not fall into those categories. I enjoy coming to find unique non-literary gifts such as jewelry, cards, coloring books, etc. The staff is incredibly friendly and will happily order any titles not in stock, (they just ordered me a copy of Julissa Arce's My Underground American Dream). Love love love this place!

Ask the Community - Book Woman

Has the store closed? I went to the address and could not find the store. Book Woman's name was not on the various shop names listed and did not see a store front sign anywhere. I made a special trip up north and couldn't find it.

Nope! BookWoman's open. They've got a huge sign out front.

Does this bookstore carry tarot cards?

Yes! We have three shelves dedicated to decks + books on Tarot!

Still it sucks to see this going away. We came in, bought some books and browed a bit. They place had a fair amount of people, still quite a few books, music, and movies. I couldn't find much I was intersteied in but Shana did and even found me a book or two. The bathroom is weird, it is around a corner that looks like you are not allowed to go to and there is a key on a hanger that you take in with you, you don't need to unlock the door and I am not sure it even locks. If the key is missing that is how you know the bathroom has someone in it, there is a small hook on the inside to hang the key while you are in the restroom. So you have to hope people notice it is gone and you have to hope everyone puts the key back. But they are clean and they have a sign in the bathroom that the front desk can supply you with pads if needed. The one misstep here was the guy running the front desk, he was not super friendly, I heard his reaction to a lady gushing about how great the place was and how many books she found for such a good price, some were gifts and he could care less. He wasn't rude but he was doing that thing where you just nod and say uh huh. I also heard him later say he was from another branch of the library, I don't know which but I hope we don't run into him again. We got something like 7 or 8 books for 9 bucks which is fantastic. He checked us out fast, as he had better things to do and we headed out.

Let me start with - it's not a big place, and the selection isn't huge so it's not terribly likely you'll find something very specific, much less a popular title. However, it's a nice concept. They sell retired library books for VERY cheap, so if you're list looking for a new book in general, this is actually a pretty decent spot to get some and save money. They have a small lot out front but I had no trouble finding parking. The staff there were really friendly and helpful; they don't have a catalog because of all the turnover but they do have things arranged by genre so they could point me toward where I might find the book I was looking for.

Black Pearl Books, one of Austin's few Black-owned independent bookstores, is closing this chapter of their physical operations. Husband-and-wife owners Eric and Katrina Brooks stated that this move comes as they "rethink life as empty nesters." I got an opportunity to chat with the couple. Eric said their daughter, Alicia, will be going off to college. He said they still continue to do pop ups with community partners like ACC Highland campus and the Austin Public Library. The owners will work toward their future plans and continue to host authors through the fall. The closing celebration on Saturday will include live illustrations, henna, matcha, and a live reading and book signing. Importantly, the City of Austin has designated June 20, 2026, as Black Pearl Books Day. This bookstore has been a beacon of light in the Austin community and will be sorely missed! For me, it is a bigger issue...we see more and more smaller businesses closing especially over the last few years. Big box national book sellers seemingly are expanding. While Black Pearl Books owners are closing their brick-and-mortar shop, I am excited for the new opportunities that await them. We say so long for now...not goodbye!

Though they are closing the brick & mortar, the owners say they aren't going anywhere and this makes me happy. I am hoping this means we will continue to see them involved in all things books, social justice, and more. This is a place I started going to when I first started coming to Austin on twice-yearly visits (prior to relocation here). For several years in fact. It is one the best places to obtain banned books. The collection is impressive and IMPORTANT. Though it is a small shop, they have EVERYTHING. If they don't they get it for you. They go above and beyond! I write this as if they are still in existence and that's because as I write this, they are. While there is still time, get out and support this local, Black-owned, glorious bookstore! When they're gone and doing other things, continue to support them. We need MORE people and MORE places like this. Period. They walk the walk and talk the talk! A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

SHANA SAYS: Super cute atmosphere, fun organizing of the books like pre loved, and lots of cute gift items. Plus a cat with its own hours! Kathy was super friendly and helpful. Made the whole experience better and is a genuine person. They do have a game room and a snack bar with free water as well as a keuring and snacks for sale. The bathroom is for everyone and they are very welcoming. Of course as an independent bookstore they have a wide variety of titles with some new books thrown in. They do mystery sells and bundles where you get a vague description of a book that is covered up and you take a chance. It should go without saying but as you are supporting local businesses the prices are a little higher the HPB or Amazon but it means more here and you should buy local when you can. I highly recommend this place. They even have a section where if you spend $50 you get to choose a free gift from books to sunglasses to other items. Go in, say hi to Kathy and The Cat!

I will start with the "downsides" (as few as they are). This place is pretty small. Like smaller than I thought. Because of this, its not the greatest place for browsing. They had some "witch" stuff which was interesting, but I was looking for a book. Also, most of the books are used which isn't terrible, but not exactly clear. As for the positives, this place is a true small business so you really get the personal touch when it comes to service. I also picked this place because it did a "blind book" service where they will pick out a book or two for you based on your description. A bunch of bookstores do this, but the Book Burrow understood the assignment exactly. They got me THREE books and all of them were PERFECT. I was surprised how they found my vibe and found me unique books! They also wrapped it in a beautiful paper and addressed it to me! It was like a little birthday gift to myself! As you can tell, I was very floored by the selections. This is the small business of small businesses so I am so HAPPY that I was able to stop by! While the place is small and their selection is in flux, I really appreciated the personal touch from the staff at The Book Burrow.
