So, I hopped aboard the Austin Duck Adventure expecting a splash of fun -- maybe some wild stories, a few corny jokes, and a guide who could quack me up. After all, it's a bus that turns into a boat. How could that not be a party? Well, turns out, it can. Don't get me wrong -- the concept is genius. Rolling down the streets of Austin in an amphibious vehicle feels like something a superhero would commute in. The city views were great, and Austin's history is as colorful as a Willie Nelson bandana. Then came the big moment -- the dramatic "splashdown" into the river. The crowd gasped, water rippled, and I thought, Here we go, baby -- adventure time! And then... nothing. Just quiet facts. Lots of them. About buildings. And bridges. Delivered in a tone that could lull an espresso-chugging squirrel to sleep. Our guide clearly knew his stuff -- if there were a pop quiz afterward, I'd ace it -- but it felt less like a tour and more like listening to your high school history teacher explain maritime safety. On the plus side, the river was beautiful, the breeze was perfect, and I learned exactly where Austin stores its ducks (spoiler: in the hearts of tourists everywhere). All in all: neat vehicle, scenic ride, but missing that "quack" factor. Would recommend for folks who like calm waters and solid facts -- just maybe bring your own jokes.

Great tour, takes you a bit outside of downtown Austin so it's another way of exploring and finding new hot spots. I love it and the seating was great. Captain Bob was the best to be honest so knowledgeable, funny and kind. I would do it again if needed.

This is a great tour if you want to get familiar with the beautiful city of Austin without hurting your feet walking around. The check-in process was very easy to navigate. Our tour guide was also very friendly, very personable, and very funny. We got to drive past a lot of historical buildings, and we're using these cute little duck whistles to make sounds at bystanders. The vehicle they use is also very interesting because it's both a street vehicle but can also go in the water. I've never been on anything like that before. Once you're done with the tour, then it's a great time to regroup with your family and then figure out what areas of Austin you want to do a deeper dive into. Overall, great experience.

The driver/tour guide was a hoot! It was a hot day, but the fans and misters kept me cool. Also make sure you sit on the left side facing the back as there is less than during the afternoon tour. Overall, great sightseeing and stories to get quick glimpse of Austin and the lake. Zooming around in the lake and enjoying the lovely day was magical ;D

This was one of the greatest discoveries, my wife and I've had in a long time. My wife located in advertising a thing called Duck Adventures. They are located in downtown Austin. They take you on this incredible tour of Austin, which is very historical and you get some of the most wonderful clear and deeply researched information about the history of the area and then they take you to the lake in a bus that drives out onto the lake and it floats. Yes I did say a bus. This thing is the size of a school bus and it goes right into the water. Crazy. It was the most fun we've had in the longest time. The tour guides name was Sean and he is just a powerhouse of information about the history of Austin and the buildings and who built them and how old they are and with the city was planning and as you drive to the lake, your brain is just filled with all these wonderful visions. Yes, you do get the duck lips and you get to blow them and it makes you sound like a duck and everybody does it on queue and waves to people that are wondering why we're on a duck boat. Or should I say duck bus but it's all in fun. Sean was amazing and I guaranteed him I was going to write a review of this business because it's an experience, you shouldn't pass if you're in the city. The driver was Captain Kirk. Well, Captain Kirk was the quiet of the two, but he was focused on safety and driving that bus to make sure everybody got home OK. And I would've asked for less and he gave me more than that. I felt completely safe in his hands. And he made the experience fun too. It isn't like we just rolled up and hit the water without knowing he prepared us and let us experience it so it was great fun. I could probably write quite a bit about the adventure at this place, but I think that you might do better just contacting them if you're in Austin and taking the tour it's worth every penny you spend. The people are worth their waiting gold that work there. Enjoy enjoy enjoy.

What a great way to see the city! Captain Bob was awesome...hands down! He had wonderful energy, was engaged and had everyone on the boat in a great mood and even gave some shoutouts to people on the streets along the way. You could really tell he enjoyed what he was doing; a very passionate individual. We came upon this by complete happenstance; looked out the hotel window and saw the "Duck". "Hey! Let's look that up and book a tour!" Online reservations were easy. Checking in at the Visitors Center was a breeze. Bob did a great job getting everyone into the Duck, seated and handed out the 'quackers'. He did a wonderful job pointing out the highlights and history of the city. We learned quite a bit along the way and had a lot of laughs. It was fun getting out on the water as well. He also let a few people drive the duck (on the lake) which was really cool to see. Bob engaged everyone from young kids, to long married couples and in between. I would definitely recommend this tour if you are in Austin and looking for a fun afternoon with some history, touring the city and cruising the lake.

Highly recommend this to solo travelers, groups, family, out of towners, couples- anyone! This was one of the highlights of the Austin trip for my boyfriend. Originally we scheduled for last Friday but it was cold and rainy so we were notified it was cancelled and had the option to join the Saturday tour, which we of course jumped on. Check in was simple, Bob was an awesome captain, the duck quackers were a fun touch and it was great learning a lot of Austin history that I wouldn't have heard about by just walking around the city. Cruising around the water was a great time too and seeing the beautiful homes and historical buildings around the area was very nice! We bought the Groupon, which was worth it. read more

We knew ahead of time how early to get to the area and approximately where to park. Directions were good. Check in was good and quick. Check in area was clean with a gift shop. Rest rooms were very clean. Captain Darrell was really engaging. Came around the boat and introduced himself and even referenced back to folks on the bus later during commentary. Told jokes, history of the are, really seemed to know what would keep the group going. Played music and kept both kids and adults entertained without being over the top annoying. Gave us tips places to go and have drinks or food later. Even after the tour was willing to answer more questions about the surrounding area, didn't seem annoyed or offended, genuinely willing to help out. Glad we made it part of our trip. read more

Riding around Austin in a large amphibious craft aside, this tour is just okay. Probably the single worst part of this tour is those (EXPLETIVE DELETED) duck noise makers! You get these yellow duckbill-shaped things that make duck noises when you blow into them. They're kinda funny at first, but when every single little kid on the bus is quacking for the entire duration of the trip, it gets a little overwhelming. Unfortunately, you can't put yourself out of your misery by jumping overboard; I know because I tried D: The tour itself is alright. If you're new to Austin and knew absolutely nothing about the city or its history, then it might be informative. If you're lived around here for any length of time, you probably already know most of what the driver's gonna say. However, the really cool part is when you actually get to Town Lake. This big bus turns into a big boat, and you chug along the river for a little bit. That part was sweet, and the sides are high enough that you don't even get wet. You don't need to worry about the sun, either, because the top of the bus is covered with a screen. The whole thing cost something like 25 bucks a pop, which seemed about right. In essence, if you're never been to Austin and/or never been on one of these kinds of tours, it might be fun. In fact, I would say that it would be fun for anyone to try once, but probably only once. read more

We first booked the Austin Duck Adventures online, it was quick and simple. When we got to the place we did encounter problems with traffic/construction , and of course the parking was horrible. We got there at 1:59 to the parking across the Austin visitor center, and I decided to call to tell them what was going on. The person that answered said that the bus had already left and I saw that they were still parked outside. He said that there was not much he could do. We decided to then just walk around downtown since we had paid $15 for parking. We went the next day to see if we could go on the tour and we decided to purchase tickets in person instead of online, and they said they were full. We were placed on the waiting list, and luckily there were 2 spaces available. The tour was fun! Captain Bob made it interesting. There is a lot of history in Austin which was what most of the tour consisted of. The trip was very informative and the best part was being in the water at lake Austin. You get to see the view of the beautiful homes. The trip went by faster than expected. Recommend if you are wanting to know the history of Austin, and are not wanting to walk through Austin. read more

Meh, I wanted to love this but I just didn't. It was a combination of the duck, the history (or lack thereof) of Austin, and the tour guide. First, the duck has a ledge around the edge I could barely see over (see pics). I don't know how any children could ever see over it. Second, I really can't remember one notable thing I learned about Austin on the duck tour. Sad, since I'm from Boston, have been on our duck tour there numerous times, and learn something new about my hometown every single time. And lastly, the tour guide. He was descriptive and very nice however he was never talking about what we were looking at while we were in front of it. He would digress and then pass something to note and talk about it later or mention something way before we got to it. I felt confused the whole time, wondering *what* exactly I was supposed to be looking at. Also, the driver BOMBED into Lake Austin, splashing every passenger. I mean, it was shocking to see him accelerating down a ramp into water. Everyone else was noticeable shaken because there was a strange quiet that came over the whole group afterward. Not cool. Also overpriced too, I thought. read more

Not a bad way to get to know Austin a bit better. $28 for two tickets on Groupon. Check in inside (there's parking across the street in the outdoor parking lot for $10 and its good for 10 hours). They will announce 20 minutes till to head around the corner where the boat is parked. Corny comedy, but that's what you get with family friendly tours. read more

I took my son on this tour today and we both had a great time. Our driver was Randy and he was warm, down-to-earth, and friendly. He automatically made everyone on board comfortable with his jokes, music trivia, and seemingly limitless breadth of city information. He did all that while still sounding like he wasn't putting on an act, either. He was genuinely happy to be there, and you can't ask for a whole lot more than that! The bus was clean and in great condition. Sit on the right for a slightly better experience. The ride was smoother than I expected, which I was especially thankful for as I can become motion sick. He drove safely, no lurching or more bouncing than expected, and I noticed on a couple occasions that Randy stopped at the yellow lights instead of gassing it. I learned a few things and had a few laughs along the way. He didn't encourage an excessive amount of quacking (thank god), just a small handful of occasions that fit in. Other than a couple exuberant quackers on board, it was just right for us. The ride is about an hour and 15 minutes long (I think?), and I swear he was talking the entire time. That guy knows his stuff! read more

This was the first time I tried a duck tour. We don't have this bus/boat concept and thought it would be a fun experience. So glad I tried it! Our driver was Bob (a teacher). He was so funny! I laughed throughout the trip. He was so knowledgable too and gave little tips about the best places to eat etc. I loved that the bus also went in the lake. I would definitely do this again and recommend it to everyone I know. read more

This is a cute tour and very kid friendly. If you are looking for a basic overview of the downtown area this is the tour for you. It is a little corny at times and definitely more suited to families. I do wish you got to see more than just the one Main Street and the bus could do with fans/air conditioning. We took this tour in May and felt a little drained by the end because of how hot it was on board. (I think having to wear a mask onboard also contributed to the effects of the heat, but that's not the company's fault). Overall, this is a cute thing to do for an afternoon if you're new to the city and have a day with nice weather! read more

My family always loves a good tour and this tour did not disappointment. The captains/tour guide was amazing as he did the entire tour in Spanish and English. He was informative about the history of Austin and he was entertaining. What we liked most was that we get to see places and things to do that we would have not thought of. And it is worth the cost to see things you would not normally. read more

We purchased our tickets online two days in advance and as we arrived at the bus and wanted to join the journey, we were told that there is no room left for us on the bus. The tour guide wasn't telling this in any way friendly, he was rude and not interested in any customer service. No discussion, no apologies, nothing helpful or words regarding a refund. Eventually, there was some magic going on and we got two final seats. Aha! We really tried to give it a fair chance after this unpleasant start. It wasn't bad, but you have to get ready for some quacking as everybody gets a small quacker, that's going to get used by the majority of the group. The tour guide never stopped talking for the entire time, but lacking in some historical data. We weren't impressed. Probably good for families with kids. read more

We spent the afternoon on a tour today. Due to a repair of the ramp to enter the water, we had a surface street only tour. They made sure we were aware before we started the trip in case anyone wanted to back out. Our driver was incredibly considerate. He even stopped in the shade when we hit a red light! We had two people in our group that require guide dogs. If you have a disability, be aware we had to climb a short ladder to get in but all four humans and both working dogs made it just fine. Our tour was scenic, funny, informative, and a great way to see Austin. We'll be back when the weather is a bit cooler and the boat ramp is fixed. I never leave reviews like this but our experience was so above what I expected I had to create a Yelp account. Thanks for a great afternoon!! read more

I Decided to take this tour when I first visited Austin. Our tour guide was very entertaining and informative. We drove around Austin streets and even went into the Colorado lake. The whole experience was very fun and engaging. I definitely recommend taking this inexpensive tour. read more

I love Duck Tours! Great way to see a city without breaking the bank and it includes a boat ride This is the best options for families because it is a short tour and the open air water bus is entertainment alone for kids. They also give everyone a duck whistle. Pro tip! Use your AAA discount! Also, they tell you to arrive 30 minutes early. I'm a rule follower so I did- mistake. The tour left late and there was no benefit in arriving early aside from visiting the gift shop. I would say 15 minutes early is plenty of time especially if you already have a ticket- which can be purchased online. read more

I booked a tour here with my summer camp students and I can honestly say it was the highlight of our class. My students were so baffled when they saw the bus turn into a boat and we were actually touring the banks of Lake Austin! Captain Bob was so energetic, had a fantastic sense of humor and was very insightful when it came to the history of Austin. He was attentive to pedestrians and other vehicles while we were touring downtown Austin and went over the safety rules as we approached the water. History

Established in 1999.

The amphibious vehicles at Austin Duck Adventures tour the streets and Lake Austin 14 to 17 times a week, giving tourists and locals alike a land and lake history lesson of the city. It was this opportunity that Paul Mahler envisioned when he founded the tour company in 1999 with a group of friends as investors. After riding the duck vehicles in Boston, Mahler wanted to bring the experience to Austin. “It’s a fun way to learn about Austin and its history,” he said.

It was in a comfortable enclosed van so we didn't have to worry about any of the outdoor elements. We got some history and insights of the city, a nice comfortable ride, and were able to get out and stretch our legs. If you prefer a more traditional tour, this is an excellent option.

We rode the elevator with her after the tour and she continued talking to a teenager all the way out. I suspect if we had had lunch with her she could have talked the whole time about the history, building, and people of Texas. -The building is beautiful and full of interesting history. The tour was about to start, so I ran (yes, ran) through the 90+ degree Texas heat to arrive on time. My guide, David, was incredible, very interesting to listen to, and took us all around Austin. I really felt like I attained a better understanding for the city. He even took our picture at different spots, and the sweet treat was delightful. The only thing I didn't love was that the elder couple on the tour with me rambled about their political leanings, which I didn't agree with at all and I struggled to keep my mouth shut, but David did such a good job of delicately leading them off the topic on multiple occasions. Their tour is super reasonably priced, a value, really. I'd recommend them to anyone visiting Austin for the first time.

So if you get her, you'll be entertained, informed and happy when the tour is finished! On our vacation we also did a similar (but larger) trip in San Antonio, and this one (Austin) was way better. It's consists of a main house and a few smaller buildings on a lovely landscaped property that is fenced off and almost park-like. To be frank (not a pun) there is not much to see here. You can go inside the house and appreciate the 1800s furnishings and way of life, and stroll the shady grounds, but all that might take less than an hour. But if you go during events like Bastille Day when there are activities like playing petanque on the lawn, you'll find the place more lively. Regardless of when you visit there's a small dedicated parking lot attached which is welcome, and inexpensive metered street parking if the lot is full. The museum and grounds are an immaculately preserved oasis of green in East Austin very close to downtown.

We got a wonderful perspective of Austin while getting out pictures taken for unforgettable memories. Leo was charming and entertained us with tidbits of information about life in Austin. Once the tour was done, Leonardo was kind enough to bike us back to this park so we could walk across and get lunch at Terry Black's. I highly recommend this tour!

The walk to the boats was a bit tricky, especially for some of our older family members, as it follows a pedestrian and bike path. There is also poison ivy along the trail to discourage people from entering Lady Bird Lake, but there are no warning signs. Thankfully, one of our cousins who lives locally gave us a heads-up. Just before the tour began, it started pouring rain, and we all rushed up to the Hyatt Hotel to try to dry off. The hotel staff were incredibly accommodating, and the property itself is beautiful. Once the rain passed, we were fortunate that the tour was still able to continue. Our captain and tour guide, Molly, truly made the experience exceptional. She was warm, genuine, and incredibly engaging from start to finish. Molly shared fascinating insights about the Austin skyline and the history of the bats, making the tour both educational and entertaining. She also used a red light so we could clearly see the bats as they flew out from under the bridge, which was a highlight for everyone. The tour offers stunning views of Lady Bird Lake, the Austin skyline, and a beautiful sunset, all while learning about one of the city's most unique attractions. Molly's enthusiasm and knowledge really elevated the entire experience. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Austin.

Work event. Meh. Equivalent to hate-watching garbage like Jersey Shore. A lot of people packed in, tightly sitting in the heat listening to tour guide whose racist, sexist, shitty, old, dad jokes are just never as funny as either he or you would like them to be! I want to get off the bus... this is a terrible disappointment, and isn't remotely appropriate for professionals with respect for their coworker. Be warned! Be better than this tired old hateful shit, Austin! Some of us demand quality in our entertainment. Ex-wife jokes? Gender-based Jokes about pink? Lawyer jokes? Drunk husband jokes? Did he seriously call the Latinx men we passed on the street fucking "Menudo?!" Karaoke was suggested and had majority team support. Not sure at all how we even wound up dealing with this campy situation instead. DON'T GO! It is everything about Texas that makes me and Americans with respect for equality so ashamed. I mean, if you don't mind giving them your money to illustrate the point of how racism, sexism, gender and other stereotypes are still marching onward unchecked in Texas. Wow, our tour guide on April 24th should not be allowed to do any more public speaking. We brought a group of people that were deeply offended by the constant borage of sexist remarks. The driver did not say very much about the city and there is no history. Whenever the driver does comment on Austin instead of street harassing pretty girls by ordering the guests, he manages to take a racist stance and joke about the slaughter of native Americans. I cannot believe we paid money to have such a garbage person tell me about how women flirt with their eyelashes..... why should I care?! Please rethink this entire program and script some factual material to prevent sexist, racist, miseducated guides from ad libbing. Pro tip: do not take a corporate group to this attraction because the content is not suitable for any type of diverse group. read more

The duck driver was great, super funny! He really kept the crowd going as well. The tour was very informative, very fun! I enjoyed the view of downtown as well as seeing the lake... Also, note this tour is not 75 minutes long, as the lady at the front desk told us. She said the the route is pretty accurate, and they almost always come in on time. The reason this is noteworthy is that we had booked another tour for that afternoon, giving us 45 minutes in between tours...we literally had to be let off early, the duck tour was that long. It is more like 105 minutes, not 75 minutes. The bus driver was awesome, just not the front desk that told us about the trip read more

My company reserved a charter of the Austin DuckTour for our National Conference this year. We had a group of about 40 adults and we had a blast! Captain Bob was our driver and he was excellent! We had a great time going into the lake and taking a turn steering the boat. The tour around Austin was awesome too! We could not have asked for a better time. We have taken our grandchildren on the Duck Tour several times and they love it. I have been around the Austin area 11 years and I enjoy the slower ride around the historic downtown area. Our guide today was Darrell and he was interesting, informative and funny. The kids, who are under 8years old, enjoy the feeling of being outside, the duck whistles and especially going into the lake. It is a fun time and a great tour for locals or tourists. read more

This is a great way to start your Austin city visit! The duck tour provides an overview of the different areas in the city, information on the architecture (they have buildings that look like an owl and armadillo--who knew?!) and a tour of the lake. We got there about 45 minutes before 8pm to get a good seat. The chairs are plastic lawn chairs and there is no restroom onboard. You can leave the boat if you need one at a nearby Hyatt hotel. There is also a restroom near Auditorium Shores, but it's kinda gross. It's also a good opportunity to walk and stretch your legs instead of waiting on the boat but leave something in your chairs to save your seat. They let you bring snacks and drinks and they also sell cold beverages. The first part of the tour involves cruising around the lake with the tour guide cracking jokes and giving some history about the structures nearby and bat facts before heading to congress bridge to wait for the bats to fly out. Seeing THOUSANDS of bats was definitely the highlight of the tour. They also used a bat safe red light, which allowed us to see them better in the dark. It wasn't a perfect experience, but the fair price, knowledgeable tour guides, and seeing the bats made it worthwhile. Definitely a good option for something to do if you're looking for something to entertain the kids or friends /family visiting from out of town.

Highly recommend Matthew with his Scooby-Doo mystery van vibes and his awesome Halloween playlist. We are so excited that we got a chance to do this for my sister's bachelorette party. And also great suggestions given by Matthew regarding speakeasy bars and pubs around the area that you would never have thought were there.

We followed all of the instructions, including being ready to check in at 10:30 at BBG's. A group of about 10 of us stayed there until 12pm and called it. Absolutely ridiculous. Multiple phone calls to the tour company with no response. I hate to leave bad reviews but this was so disappointing. We really were looking forward to this, and specifically came to Austin for tubing (versus the other idea for a trip we had which was the beach. In hindsight, we should've flown to California instead. No one would be able to forget us that way.) Other companies had their groups successfully picked up and whisked away by their tour vans. (austin detours was one). We flew here and bought a 12 pack for 2 of us and ended up lugging around cans of beer through downtown Austin for no reason. If our trip was a little bit longer this might be less disappointing. However, I couldn't recommend this company. Unless you wanted to wait an hour for zero reason at all. At least if I booked Austin detours I'd be on the river. It just makes me so sad thinking about the multiple groups of us sitting around at that bar waiting for essentially no reason and no communication. Do not. Book. The river raft.

We have learned that taking the VIP bus is more our speed. We can have a drink on the bus and the group is usually pretty cool. They are so organized. We arrive at the pickup spot, check in, have a drink and it's all done seamlessly. Hannah was a great bus host. She's spot on keeping us informed where we are and what to do when we arrive. She goes over rules and policies related to being on the river and trespassing rules. They always do a great job and I'll be doing it again next year.

In previous vacations we took bus tours to get a little bit more familiar with the city and that is what we did with Austin. Only this time we rode a Double Decker bus! I have seen this kind of bus tour here and there and have seen it when I am in Seattle. Officially I think after this particular bus tour it was my first time riding a Double Decker bus. The weather was typical spring weather on our entire visit but the day we chose to take this tour it was nice and warm and a perfect time to go ride this bus followed by rain for a few days (This took place in April). The ride was so much fun and the tour guide was great! Austin is definitely a different cut than the rest of Texas and that was reflected in many of the people we met. Open mindedness being one and we really felt that with the tour guide. He was so knowledgeable of the city and the neighborhoods and all that made this bus tour all the more amazing. But of course they would probably have staff with personalities that would be compatible in this way. Riding on the top of the bus was so much fun. A few times we had to duck from tree branches and I lowered my head a few times from the traffic lights but that was just me getting nervous with being that high to a light. You see all the sights, famous buildings, museums, local culture, restaurant recommendations and so much more while on this tour. So this was a great experience! At first, I sat on the upper level. It was wonderful to be out in the fresh air. However, the sun was a little too much for me so I had to move down to the inside area. I was the only one down there which was fine, but it was really quite filthy. There was thick gray dust on the top rail of all the seats and the fabric on the seats themselves was all thick with black grease. The tour guide was really wonderful. Entertaining and knowledgeable with one exception that was actually kind of disturbing to me personally. When we got to South Congress he talked about the "I love you so much" wall. His story of a husband painting it for his wife could not have been more wrong. It was in fact done by an artist named Amy for her then girlfriend Liz an infamous Austin hotelier and restauranteur. It is an incredibly iconic part of Austin history and if it's told it should be not fiction. I hope for sure this can be corrected for future tours.

Not only that but management was very disrespectful when we complained about our experience. If there are other services, go there! The positive reviews sucked me in but it really must depend on the captain you have. Either way, take the risk if you want. I heard the captain of the other ship that went out talking about the people on his ship negatively so I'm sure our captain did the same. Not worth all of that for the lake we went to. Steer clear.
