This was fun and I learned quite few things. Make sure to get there few minutes before so you can find parking. There's a garage across the street from the tourist center. Be ware of the people trying to get money from you from the parking. They will tell you to use moonshines vallet, but don't waste your time. Moonshine's vallet it's only for costumers. read more

I finally took this tour after living in Austin for over 10 years, and it was great! Captain Bob was a blast and was very informative about the city. We had a Groupon. It was very expired but they took it like it wasn't. That is a stand up business. The tour itself is good. The highlight is going into the water. I did learn a few things on the tour even though I am a life long Austinite. Our tour guide was friendly. He had his dog on the vehicle. So cute. He also let a birthday girl "drive" the vehicle when we were on the boat while he offered to take photos of people. The tour last about a hour and half. Picks up by the convention center and you can park in their parking garage; cost about $8 for the two hours you are parked. The shop where you check in is also very cute and has Ausitn branded things to buy. Good restrooms as well. Know that it can be cool on the vehicle in the spring. I cam glad that we brought a jacket. Also I wouldn't do the tour when protest are going on in Austin. It limits how close the vehicle get to the Capital. I would recommend to others. I do think it is a tad high in price but they do run specials often. read more

My husband and I have been on Duck Tours in other cities before and we were looking forward to exploring Austin with another. We unearthed a Groupon that gave us half-priced tickets - two for $28. The thrill, of course, is being on a vehicle that can not only take you around the land-bound sites but can also slip into the water and take you around a beautiful lake. Had we had a great tour guide at the wheel, this could have been a lot of fun but we ended up with someone who admitted that he'd been only doing this for six days. He had nothing interesting to share about the city, nervously trailed off the ends of all his sentences, and at one point even declared that he was short on the funnies and solicited riders for jokes. A big group at the back of the bus got bored and started their own loud conversation which then made it impossible to hear him at all. That, coupled with the noisy quackers that we were all supplied with upon embarkation, made for a loud, distractive ride. On the water, he clammed up and clearly didn't have anything to say about the sights so he just turned on the radio and had us listening to old 80s tunes. A neighboring Duck Tour bus happened to ride parallel to ours and I was dismayed to find that their tour guide was spinning tales about everything around them. It would seem that we had chosen the wrong bus. Had he just been a dry personality, it would have just been a dull tour but as we left the water, our boat got stuck for quite a few minutes. The boats aren't equipped with reverse thrusters but the drive function wasn't gripping the land enough so our driver cum tour guide toiled fearfully with the slippery wheels for awhile. We managed to make it, but it was just another southward tailspin of an already bad ride. I wouldn't write off Duck Tours completely since others have written about a great time. But our experience was little more than a bumpy nap and we wish we'd spent our limited time in Austin on something better. read more

Took my out-of-towner parents on the Duck Boat Tour. A great time for sight seeing! You touch on 6th St, the Capital, UT, and Lake Travis. My parents really enjoyed it as well. I enjoyed not having to drive them around in Austin traffic because NO. Just NO. I have lived in Austin for 7 months now and learned quite a few tidbits of information from this tour - like where Dennis Quaid lives ;) You get duck bills that quack. They are currently in the garbage because I have a 7 year old, but they were super fun while on the tour. The guide was very funny - never a dull moment. Some of the jokes were "cheesy", but very tourist-y. I really enjoyed the music as well (who doesn't enjoy the YMCA?!). You go into the water for approximately 20 minutes. I wish it was a little longer, but maybe that's just me. The tour is 75 minutes total. The right amount of time - especially on a hot day. Tip: get to the tourist check-in 30 minutes early if you want to sit together. Tip: tip your driver if they do a good job. Most of the money they actually make are tips. So why the 4 stars? We got to the check-in an hour early. I went up to the representative and told her I was there for the 2 pm tour. She started to become VERY rude with me and went on about how I was supposed to be there 1/2 early and the boat is leaving. My heart rate elevated and I told her I said 2 pm. She still didn't get it. I said again 2 pm tour. She finally heard me. She said that it was a long day so far. It was 1 pm. You represent your company and if it was a long day then perhaps you should be more attentive and/or leave for the day. That was my first impression of the Duck Adventures. Luckily the guide made up for it and because my interaction with the ticket representative left me with a sour taste in my mouth. read more

I walked away with a major headache. I knew once I was handed a "quacker" whistle-thing, that this was going to be testing my patience. Then, right before the vehicle left, two really obnoxious girls got on board. The combination of the quackers and the obnoxious chics were horrible. Those two girls NEVER stopped blowing into their whistles, and actually started a major fight with the two girls they were sitting next to. There was all kinds of cussing and yelling. And what did the driver (Rick, I think) do? Not a thing. Just ignored them like it wasn't happening. Finally, an older lady got involved so they would stop their yelling long enough so we could actually hear what the driver was saying. I was so extremely disappointed in this. The one thing I would want completely done away with is those damn whistles. There is too much likelihood of people using them to the point of annoying others. I'm sure it happens with every ride. I would not recommend this for anyone. read more

Captain Darryl gave us a witty tour of downtown, including the area around the Capital and the University of Texas, before heading east for a cruise on Lake Austin. Although we live here, we got to see a number of places we'd not been before. Our guests from Virginia had a great time, and one of them, a retired navy officer, got to drive the boat out on the lake. The tour was well worth the price, and sometimes you can find a discount. Incidentally, the tour starts at the visitors' bureau on the ground floor of the 5th Street public parking garage, so finding a parking place was a snap. read more

If you don't have kids with you, skip this tour. I'd seen Duck Adventure tours in every big city area that has a lake or ocean nearby. This time, I had some time on my hands and was seeking a tour to learn about the area. I decided that I could never convince my husband to pay to get on a contraption that dubs as a boat and a duck, so I might as well do it while I was alone for the day. I took the early tour. It left out of the tourism center, just a short walk from our hotel, the Residence Inn. Darrell came in to to center, made the announcement that he was there and and walked out. Luckily, I was ready and waiting, otherwise if I'd had have been in the bathroom or not paying attention to the one time announcement, I might have missed the boat. We started the tour on land and Darrell seemed to do a fine job cracking jokes and keeping the kids entertained, but when it came to learning about history and the city in general, I thought that the tour was lacking and not at all worth the price of admission. Later, I even learned a couple of the accusations that he made on the tour weren't fact. My favorite part of the tour was when we reached Austin Lake. This was the only part of Austin that I'd not yet made my way to, so even though he dropped yet a few more restaurant promotions, along the lake ride, I liked gliding along the lake. It only seemed to be about a 15 minute ride up the lake and back, but still the highlight of the tour for me. read more

I'll sum it all up for ya: The tour isn't exciting until you get to the part where the vehicle you are in splashes into the water and you float around in it safely. Let me explain. You have a limited view of everything in the city because you are in a covered vehicle and are on one side only (it is not possible to be on both sides at the same time. And it is not socially appropriate to lean over the people sitting on the other side.) I'm not sure why someone else commented on the seats, did you expect plush theater seats on a land/water vehicle? Anyway, the tour information is basic information, and I don't remember any of it, to be honest. Additionally, I wasn't much into the blowing in the duck bill thing. It was loud and obnoxious, but it seemed others enjoyed that part, a lot. However, I'm all about trying things once, and for that reason I recommend this tour because if you have never been in a vehicle that accelerated and landed in water (and you didn't die) then this is a new experience for you. And it's pretty cool. You float around the lake a bit, get a new view of Mozart's and Abel's, and then you're back on land. That's it and it's worth $25 a piece, IMHO. We probably wouldn't go again. But it was worth it once. read more

Ick. The tour guide was so intense and rude to us when we got there! We were 30 minutes early for the tour (as they request), but one of our friends was stuck in traffic and was going to be more like ten minutes EARLY for the tour- the guy kept borderline yelling at us to call him and was demanding to know what exit he was at and saying "you all are the only reason we're not leaving." Or could it be because the tour isn't supposed to leave for another 20 minutes?! He also insisted that our friend wouldn't make it and said we should leave him. He made it, with time to spare. But the whole ordeal left a sour taste in our mouths the entire first half of the tour. Sounds like others have had similar experiences. The tour guide had some interesting facts about Austin, but was obnoxious. He would call out to people on the street, especially women, asking us to wave to them and quack our quacker noise makers."Hey there pretty girl! Quuuuack" It was almost like cat calling. Then, if they didn't wave back, he'd say things like, "Oh, she's obviously not from Texas, not friendly enough to wave. Looks more like New York City to me." Uh... How creepy is it to get quacked at on the street?! Of course they're not waving back! And how do you judge somebody to "look like" they're from NYC with a microphone on the street? Creep-y. He also incorrectly told us the apartments owned by UT on Lake Austin Blvd are "married with children" housing, which isn't true. You're only on the lake for like 5 minutes if the entire tour. The kicker for me was two fold- he asked for tips on the mic before we got off the bus- so tacky! I'm all about tipping, but the loud speaker request?! Come on! And he had a sign painted on the bus asking for tips too- and it had a spelling error!!! read more

If you sit on the inside rows, it is hard to see the building that the tour director/driver is talking about. The amphibious vehicle has a low roof that blocks your view. On the good side, the tour was educational and we learned some history of buildings in downtown Austin. Our particular vehicle didn't drive very well and often threatened to stall on the way to the lake. Going into the water was neat, but we didn't stay in the water too long. The tour wasn't quite worth the $20 we paid per person. If the view out of all the rows of seats had been better, I might've given it 3 stars. I still might take out-of-towners to see this, though. read more

My family was visting in town and wanted to do something. Figuring a tour would be a cute way for them to see more of the town, I scouted to find something interesting, different and fun to do. Working downtown, I have seen and heard of the duck tour before. I called my parents and they thought it sounded neat. I arrived 15 mins before 2PM, and the only thing that frustrated me was the driver was telling me they were going to leave without me, yet on the phone and website they make it VERY clear they leave at 2 on the dot. I ran all the way to the bus and then sat for another 10 mins while other people were allowed on the bus. They gave us all duck quakers (horns) and allowed us to bleet them until our hearts were content. They looked like duck bills and my parents have a great sense of humor so they thought it was awesome. We travelled through downtown, heard stories about buildings that I had never known.... got to see the newly burned governors mansion... and then travelled to Lake Austin. The cutest part came when there was a group of young children standing next to Hula Hut. They watched as our truck transformed into a boat and we pulled into the water. Shock and fear had them jumping up and down and when they realized we were supposed to be in the water they were excited and wanted to ride as well... I thought the tour was cute. The duck bills made it NOT boring and was really cute for small kids. Most of the tours are pretty boring.... I suggest checking this one out. read more

They are no longer allowed in the water due to construction. They will not disclose this to you until you are boarded on the bus. They will have you sign something that states you know where the life vests are BEFORE you receive your tickets. Dishonesty at its finest. read more

Quacking is the best part about duck tours, and this one definitely had its fair share. I was excited to learn that Austin had water! Turns out it's created by a bunch of dams, but whatever, water is water. Tickets are about $27 a person: worth it. They also offer sunset ducks which I bet would be gorgeous! The seats on the duck were cushioned and way more comfortable than usual. Our guide was cheesey and made lame jokes as usual, and knew a lot about the city. We spent most of the time on land, but still a good amount in the water. I suppose that's because there's not too much to see from the water. Super fun and is basically 2 tours in one so you can skip the walking tours and the boat cruises! read more

If you don't have a lot of time in Austin but would like a compressed and entertaining tour of this incredible city, the Duck Tours is for you. Very informative. History, culinary, and a dip in Lake Austin. The drivers are always entertaining and the kids always have fun. Sad to read reviews where people get upset with kids having good clean fun. Guess there are lots of Scrooges in this world. Probably take this tour a couple more times before I get bored. But I'll still go as long as the kids like it. read more

Let me begin by saying that this is an excellent tour for the 4-9 year old age group. That being said, my hubby and I went on the tour. We had a groupon, so it was a BOGO deal; had we paid full price, we would have been pretty peeved. It's only an hour and fifteen minutes long. They take you around Austin and point out some interesting sites, but primarily they give you "quackers" that you blow into to make a duck sound and they have you "quack" at pedestrians as you drive by them. It's cute for the kids, but as an adult it gets to be a little annoying after about 20 minutes of this. The vehicle is amphibious and they take you on Lake Austin. They point out a few homes (Dennis Quaid ' s for example) and you then "quack" at boaters. Its about 35% tour and 65% quacking. It's not bad if you buy the groupon...otherwise I would skip it. read more

The Austin Duck Tour was a fun way to kill some time during my parent's visit. Get ready for quacking...everyone is handed a loud quacker and if you are on a bus full of children, they quack them the entire time. It was informative and fun. Our tour guide is also an announcer for UT games and used to be a Disney Tour guide. He was great. Of course, there are an endless amounts of corny jokes for Dads to add to their repertoire. You see a good amount too. You start off on 6th ST, you see a couple views of the Capitol, UT and then you jump into Lake Austin. He pointed out some celebrity houses and played some fun music. Here was the unfortunate part of our trip. The Duck tour does not have a plan for traffic. Due to a festival, street closures and bringing downtown traffic down to ONE LANE on a weekend day...we truly hit the perfect storm of traffic (all while impatient children are quacking louder and louder). Thank goodness we did not have reservations or tickets for anything when the duck tour was SUPPOSED to end because we were very late. Just sitting in traffic with no A/C in the Texas heat. The first half of our experience was the tour and just as much time was spent stuck in stop-and-go traffic. Other than that, it is a fun thing to do to kill time and learn a bit. read more
